Ahead of the game.

The best thing I did was purchasing a Burly stove, wow do they give out heat quickly. They are ahead of the game regarding wood burners. A little at a time gives a lot. You will know what that means if you own one. Well I am sure you know the saying " If you can't stand the heat stay out of the kitchen". Well if you can't
stand the cold, buy a Burly, you will never regret it..

Flueless Gas Fire

We were told originally that our flueless fire could not be repaired and it was unsafe and and disconnected. After contacting Burley they were extremely helpful with supplying me with all the information needed to sort the problem which I passed on to the engineers.
Without their direct involvement we would have had to purchase a new fire.

Excellent customer service

I have a Burley log effect gas fire which has been installed for many years and has given very good service. Recently it keeps turning itself off and is hard to relight - I phoned Burley and got exceptional help and support. Too often now when you call a company it is almost impossible to speak to a person but I got through straight away and was given advice on how could possibly fix the problem myself and , should this not work , the phone number of an engineer who should be able to resolve the issue . I tried without success but the engineer is due to come next week .
So a very helpful response from Burley , much appreciated.

Feedback after 5 years use

I wanted to give some feedback after
having used a "Debdale" for just over 5 years, which may be of use to future purchasers. Some of the suggestions below may be in the booklet already
but sometimes folk take more notice of personal advice, why I do not know!
i)first and foremost, DO follow the instructions in your Stove Booklet to the letter- this is quite a sophisticated piece of equipment and I have found out, to my cost, that ignoring them is not a good idea!
ii) DO get your wood as dry as possible, ignoring to some extent the "acceptable" moisture levels.
iii) DO ensure you keep up a good solid bed of hot embers. Letting them burn too low will mean starting all over again.
iv) DO NOT bank up your stove to burn slowly overnight- you will finish up with a heavily blackened
stove window very difficult to clean
v) DO keep your stove window in good condition-I rub mine almost daily depending on burning conditions. If your glass is blackening badly then you
have poor burning conditions
vi) DO note that the location of a house and weather conditions can dictate how well the stove behaves. If you are in a low and sheltered location then the still and damp evenings will impact performance but on the other hand windy conditions are ideal.
vii) finally, and of paramount importance, DO ensure the top firebrick has not slipped forward-if it has then this will have a significant negative impact on performance.
As for Burley I have never had anything but prompt and courteous service from them on the very few occasions I have had to raise a query.
No hesitation in recommending.

Excellent purchase & service ...thank you!

We had our chimney capped in Nov part of a house renovation & needed something to bring out hearth back to life. Friends near Shoreham suggested Shoreham Fireplace Centre. They were incredibly helpful... suggested a Burley 292, my husband wasnt entirely sure it would fit our fireplace which seems an unusual size. After email contact with Burley customer service who were extremely helpful & promptly sent us a template to use to check measurements- just the assurance my husband needed. We've not been disappointed it looks good quality gives us a warm cheerful look & the room feels cosy again. My husband so pleased with price & very grateful to Shoreham Fireplace Centre & Burley too. Thanks to both!

Burley has been great

I’ve had my Balance Flue installed for many years and had no issues. I did require some spares and spoke to the Technical department who provided part codes and a retailer of where they could be purchased. Overall my experience with Burley has been great and I will purchase another of their fires again when the time comes.

Brilliantly conceived and efficient wood stove

I have owned a Burley Hollywell stove for 9 years now and so I thought I was well placed to give an objective if rather enthusiastic review of the stove. It is rated as 5kw and is more than adequate for the 25 sqm room it is used in. With the room door open it also adds worthwhile heat to the rest of the house. I burn every evening for 6 months of the year, getting though well over a ton of properly seasoned hardwood in a season. I have only needed to replace a single back brick in all the time I have owned it. The stainless baffle is still in perfect condition. It lights easily, is smoke free in operation makes efficient use of the wood and the brilliant fireball combustion system produces a wonderful flame pattern. Despite its simple appearance it is a sophisticated and effective wood stove. I would recommend it to anyone!

I left a poor review in 2021 and…

I left a poor review in 2021 and strangely just had a reply from Burley.
Having now owned the Holywell for 8 years I now feel I know it's little quirks and think a much better review is called for.
Nothing has broken, it gives out good heat and in general it lights very well. Just take ash out once a month, use kiln dried logs and all is good. It's not perfect but what is nowadays.

High quality product with great support- but use correctly

Firstly these stoves aren't cheap to purchase there are may cheaper imported stoves, I've been through a chunk of them and this is the only one I would recommend firstly the stove and then the company

The stove I have two 9412 crownley, huge glass window, as close visually as having a fire from the visual point of view. The stoves are clearly a quality item, they feel well made.

Lighting them and ruining them is slightly different from normal stoves, they work best with a think layer of ash, move the leaver to the right to start, use a proper pile of kindling to get them going, then. one onto the logs move the leaver to around the middle and leave it there. Feed the fire regularly. If you do this the ash contains almost no left over unburnt charcoal.

Don't throw huge amounts of wood in there every few hours, it won't burn efficiently. Also don;t just crank it to max, yes it will get hotter but it'll burn though wood and damage it.

Its a real case of using them properly if you use them incorrectly you won't get the value of of them.

Log burners are not like central heating make sure you have plenty of space around them for them to give off their heat especially if you put them in a fireplace opening.

My Crownley in one room heats a room with solid walls of over 9000 cubic feet easily

The products are good products, well designed, well made in the uk, but you need to use them properly. They are not like central heating, they are not set and forget. It will hate being cranked open fully and being allowed to die right down and then being filled with wood.

I can also recommend the external air kit

Finally the company, contacting them is easy, when you have a problem, they come back to you and are there to help, it feels very m much like they are run by enthusiasts rather then people just wanting to extract as much money as possible out of customers

We have owned a Burley for over two years

We have owned a Burley Ashdown 9408-C for over 2 years and are very happy with it. Recently we have had to replace some of the 'bricks' and I have liaised with Chris Astley-Stone Burley's Customer Services Manager for advice.
Chris has been very helpful and thorough with his explanations and advice. His comments on how to actually light (especially when the flu is cold) and manage the stove really have been spot on.

I don’t understand the negativity…

I don’t understand the negativity around these stoves, I to have had a few and decided to try this due to the efficiency and boy it’s efficient. You need to leave the ash in the bottom and over winter I have not emptied it for a month, it gets really nice and warm and yes the glass goes dark when it starts to die down but when you get up the next day and get it going again it soon goes back to clear when up and running and I find it very easy to light and 100% buy another, very very happy.

Have used and owned numerous wood…

Have used and owned numerous wood stoves over last 40 years. French, Scandinavian and English. All pretty much the same. Moved house again and purchased a Burley Crownley and has been the worst by a country mile. Very hard to light. Smokes a lot making the glass impossible to keep clean. Does not draw air very well. Big in size but interior small so only takes a small amount of wood so needs constant attention. You have to leave the door ajar in reality for half an hour to start it up and during this smoke often fills the room which is unhealthy and worse than cigarette smoking. Problem is their air system which is useless. Most fires draw air from bottom front vents which creates a fierce draw. This one does not and suffers as a result. Worst decision ever made buying this but stuck with it now. It is far from the best and no point talking to staff as they are a bit arrogant to say the least and rather unhelpful. They think their products are great and refuse any criticism so once you pay your money that is it. The older firms are the better one's to buy from in my view.

You mention difficulty lighting, a smoky glass, poor draw, and a small firebox. These problems are often related to the installation, fuel, and operation, not the stove itself.

A black glass is almost always due to incomplete combustion, caused by:

Fuel Quality: Using wet (over 20% moisture) or unsuitable wood.

Air Supply: Insufficient air due to poor flue draw, obstructions, or incorrect air control use.

Flue Draw: This is crucial and depends on flue height, diameter, insulation, and bends.

The Crownley produces 18kW with roughly 4kg of wood per hour. Is it correctly sized for your room? An oversized stove burns inefficiently and creates creosote (a fire hazard). Have you discussed this with your retailer or installer?

Regarding the air system, while different from older models, modern eco-design stoves such as ours are designed for efficient combustion with the correct fuel and good flue draw.

We urge you to contact your retailer and installer to check the installation, flue, and operation. They can also confirm the stove's suitability for your room.

Costly maintenance

Poor design means having to replace the fragile baffle regularly, at cost, in spite of having carefully read and followed the operating instructions. Our chimney sweep says that their online forum is full of complaints about this and it’s a problem unique to Burley customers. We currently have a stove out of commission while we wait for the spare part.

Hi Sarah, we understand your frustration with the baffle issue. The vermiculite boards inside our stoves are chosen for their excellent insulation and heat resistance, but they can be susceptible to impact damage, potentially during chimney sweeping or if the stove is overfired. Replacement boards are available from your local stove retailer where you purchased your stove. To minimise future damage, we recommend removing the side vermiculite boards before removing the top baffle during cleaning or maintenance. Avoid throwing logs and ensure you're not overfiring the stove.

This company never have spare parts

This company never have spare parts. You spend a fortune buying the fire and the they are not interested when you want repairs. Save your money and buy elsewhere
They were contacted by two gas companies locally and they were told parts unavailable and have now got a new fire from another company at half the cost
