I am leaving this review based on a very serious experience involving A Choice / Premium Choice Limited and a 17-year-old learner driver.

A 17-year-old took out car insurance through A Choice and selected monthly payments. What later became clear is that the monthly-payment route was not simply a normal insurance instalment plan. It led to Premium Credit Limited generating a regulated credit agreement in the young person’s name.

The Premium Credit agreement was headed as a Consumer Credit Act 1974 credit agreement and described itself as a running-account credit facility. It named the 17-year-old as the customer and showed the intermediary as Premium Choice Limited (U18). However, the same agreement also stated that to enter into the agreement the customer must be over 18 years old.

The agreement was not signed. Premium Credit then sent an email saying their records showed the credit agreement had not been signed, but that Direct Debit payments would still be collected. A £25 fee for not returning the signed agreement was also charged and collected.

I have also seen A Choice monthly-payment quotes displayed to a fake 17-year-old profile on Go.Compare, which raises concern that this may not be an isolated issue.

This matter has now been reported to the FCA, Citizens Advice / Trading Standards route, Go Compare.

My concern is simple: parents and young drivers may see “monthly payments” and assume it is just a monthly insurance option. In reality, this appears to involve regulated premium finance, with credit-agreement wording, Direct Debits, fees, cancellation risk and possible credit-reference consequences.

Until this is fully explained, I would strongly urge any parent or young driver to be extremely careful before taking monthly payments with A Choice, especially where the driver is under 18. Ask exactly whether a credit agreement is involved, who the finance provider is, whether the customer is legally eligible, and what happens if the agreement is unsigned.

This is currently unresolved, but the documents I have seen raise very serious questions.
