Last minute upgrade to balloon flight
After several cancelled flights due to the weather we booked a last minute flight after receiving a text message from virgin to say that an upgrade was available for a flight in a couple of days. The customer service when I phoned to upgrade was excellent. The process of phoning the flight line the night before was also very simple. All information was included in the message so we knew exactly where to go and when. The set up and registration of flyers was nice and straightforward on the day and the flight took off as expected. Our pilot, Nobby, was extremely knowledgable and was pointing out local landmarks and showing us how the balloon operated. Landing was smooth and we helped pack the balloon away with ease. The ground crew drove us back to the departure point after we shared a quick glass of bubbly with them. The whole team were friendly and helpful and I can’t wait to do it again one day

The 3 year wait was well worth it!!
Well, after 3 and a half years of booking and cancellations due to the weather, we finally got our flight on the morning of July 19th. The weather was perfect and the whole experience was amazing. We loved everything from helping to inflate the balloon and pack away at the end of the flight and obviously the flight itself. Our pilot Gavin was so lovely as were the whole ground crew, so friendly and helpful and we had the perfect flight. We would definitely fly with Virgin again, the only down side, only 1 glass of fizz...I could have drank the whole bottle, even if it was only 8am 😀

8 attempts over 2 years to get…
8 attempts over 2 years to get airborne. The flight then went ahead at a back up site in Yorkshire when we booked for a Lake District trip expecting views of Windermere. I understand weather conditions impact the flights but it appears the graythwaite site has problems of the wind direction likely taking you out to sea from our pilot’s explanation, so in my opinion it is false advertising. This is unlikely to be your departure point, so shouldn't be the named location, it is more honest to mention it as a back up location. When driving 3 hours to the destination it was a real disappointment for me. While I understand the late info available for whether your flight is going ahead (10.30-11pm) it is also a real problem for those traveling far for a 5-5.30am meet up. I would not recommend it to any one despite the actual flight being pleasant

Hot air ballooning is entirely weather dependent, and while cancellations are always made with safety as the priority, we appreciate how disappointing repeated disruptions can be and we do sincerely apologise for this.
We're pleased to hear that you did eventually enjoy the flight itself, although we're sorry you were disappointed that it departed from one of our designated back-up launch sites rather than the primary Lake District location.
As explained within our booking confirmations, balloon flights may depart from one of several designated launch sites, depending on the weather conditions and forecast wind direction on the day. This is essential to ensure a safe flight and suitable landing area. The back-up sites are not used because there are ongoing issues with a primary location, but because wind conditions can vary significantly from one day to the next, and our pilots must choose the safest and most appropriate launch site.
We also appreciate that travelling a long distance can make the late confirmation time challenging. Unfortunately, weather forecasts are only reliable close to the time of flight, which is why final meeting arrangements are confirmed the evening before for a morning flight. While we understand this can be inconvenient, it allows our pilots to make the safest and most accurate decision possible.
Thank you again for your feedback. We're sorry that the overall experience didn't meet your expectations, although we're pleased you were at least able to enjoy the flight once airborne.

Worth the wait

This was my second balloon flight with virgin - both as birthday presents. Was lovely to be able to get involved with inflation of balloon. Being up in the sky is so calm and peaceful with breathtaking views. Whole experience was amazing, would thoroughly recommend.

Incorrect information given about meet point, so we never got to go.
Originally advertised in Oxford, then changed to Henley, even though planned launch field has been a building site for months. All very disappointing and not a good surprise birthday present.

We did respond to your email yesterday to explain what happened, as the information provided for your flight was correct.
For an evening flight the final meeting arrangements are confirmed by 2pm on the day of your flight. For your particular booking, the Flight Line was updated by the pilot at 9.57am on the day confirming a 6:00pm meeting time at one of our designated back up sites at Henley-on-Thames. Unfortunately the pilot must operate to strict timings based on the weather conditions and to ensure the flight can depart safely with all passengers.
The back up site information on our website which is accessed through your booking confirmation advises that all passengers will be transported to Henstridge Airfield from the designated meeting point at Henley.
Had the meeting information been incorrect, we would have expected to receive similar complaints from the other passengers booked onto the flight. However, the flight departed as planned with the remaining passengers who arrived at the confirmed meeting point and time.
If you were running late, your booking confirmation also included an Emergency Contact Number, which is available for up to one hour before the confirmed meeting time. After this point, the pilot and ground crew are fully occupied transporting passengers, preparing the balloon and carrying out the safety-critical tasks required for departure.
With regards to your comment about the Oxford location being a building site, this has only come to both ours and the pilot's attention very recently and is exactly why (aside from weather conditions) we have back up sites in place.
We understand it was disappointing to miss the flight, particularly as this was a birthday gift. However, we are satisfied that the meeting time and location information provided was accurate, clear and enabled the flight to operate as planned.

A memorable experience
We thoroughly enjoyed the experience, although the last minute change of location meant that the views were not as interesting as we had hoped for at the original venue ( we flew over Keynsham instead of Ashton Court, Bristol). The pilot was friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.
The flight was also cancelled on two occasions before we finally took off, leading to a bit of stress ( due to having to rearrange other commitments), although we understand this was due to the weather conditions, rather than the company. Value for money overall? Not sure.

I missed the balloon ride because I…
I missed the balloon ride because I went to bed at 10:30pm expecting an early start. Alarm was set for 4:30am only to receive a message saying the flight was at 5:15am the meeting point is an hours drive away so there was no way of getting there on time. Both of us were so disappointed after you had cancelled the flight 4 times previously. Very disappointed customer service was received by your customer service team who could only repeat its in the instructions that the time Varies.

We understand how frustrating it is to miss a flight, particularly after experiencing previous weather-related cancellations.
All passengers are asked to check their designated Flight Line Number from 11:00pm the evening before when they are booked in for a morning flight. This is explained on the Booking Confirmation which is emailed to you at the time of booking and this information would have been made available to you with every flight booking that you have had with us previously.
The meeting times shown are an approximate guide and can change by up to an hour either way depending on the latest weather conditions. On occasion, flights may also be moved to one of our designated back-up launch sites and all of this information is explained and highlighted in your Booking Confirmation.
One of our team spoke with you directly on 21st July (the day of your flight) and you confirmed that you chose to check Flight Line at 4:30am rather than from 11:00pm. The Flight Line for your flight was actually updated even earlier, at 10:28pm the previous evening, confirming the final meeting arrangements. Unfortunately, by waiting until 4:30am to check, there was not enough time for you to travel to the meeting point.
We appreciate this was disappointing, but the final meeting details were available in accordance with our published instructions. As advised, we always encourage customers to check their Flight Line from 11:00pm the night before so they have the latest information and can make any necessary travel arrangements.
Once again we are sorry to read how disappointed you're feeling, however we hope our response has given some further context to anyone reading this review.
