Had an easy conversation with Polly about a payment in relation to my dogs insurance policy. Polly was friendly, polite and very helpful.

Dealt with query quickly and efficiently and explained the procedure.

Had a problem in that the policy I set up by phone hadn’t activated. A quick 5 minute call, answered by Will, and all was sorted.

Five years of premiums – completely let down when we finally needed them

We have insured our dog Yogi with Perfect Pet Insurance for the past five years. Yogi is now 12 years old and during all that time we have never made a single claim.

We pay around £70 a month for their highest level of cover, believing that if Yogi ever became unwell, we had done the responsible thing and would have good insurance in place.

Unfortunately, when we finally needed to claim, our experience was incredibly disappointing.

Yogi developed a lump on one of his testicles and our vet advised that he needed to be castrated as part of his treatment. We contacted Perfect Pet expecting that, after five years of paying substantial premiums without making a claim, his medically necessary treatment would be covered.

We were told that they would not pay for the operation because Yogi had not been castrated when he was younger. We were told that this exclusion was contained within the policy wording/small print and that because he had remained entire, treatment involving his testicles/castration would not be covered.

We were absolutely shocked.

Perfect Pet knew Yogi was not castrated when they insured him and continued accepting our premiums year after year. At no point during those five years did we appreciate that remaining uncastrated could mean that a future medically necessary operation involving his testicles would be excluded.

Had this limitation been made prominent and clear to us, we could have made a properly informed decision about whether this was the right insurance for Yogi.

After paying approximately £4,200 in premiums over five years, with no previous claims, the first time we genuinely needed the insurance we believed we had paid for, the claim was refused.

I appreciate that insurance policies contain exclusions and that customers need to read their policy documents. However, in my opinion, an exclusion as significant as this should be made extremely clear when taking out and renewing a policy — particularly when the insurer knows the dog is entire.

We didn’t expect special treatment because we had never claimed before. We simply expected the comprehensive insurance we had paid a significant amount for to be there when our dog genuinely needed medical treatment.

Our experience has left us extremely disappointed and questioning the value of the cover we have paid for over the last five years.

I would strongly advise anyone considering Perfect Pet Insurance, particularly anyone with an uncastrated dog, to read every exclusion very carefully and specifically ask what conditions and operations will not be covered before taking out a policy.

Sadly, based on our experience with Yogi, we could not recommend Perfect Pet Insurance.
