I recently purchased a Garda Garden Room from Johnson Garden Buildings and wanted to share an honest account of my experience — the highs, the lows, and everything in between.

Sales Process – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The sales experience started off really well. The team in Eastbourne were friendly, helpful, and happy to answer all my questions. Kurt, who carried out the site visits, was efficient and professional. We quickly aligned on what groundwork was needed before the build could begin, and the team at HQ handled pricing and payment smoothly. A second visit confirmed that everything was ready to go, and I was especially pleased that they were able to accommodate my request to have the office completed by the first week of March.

Build Experience – ⭐⭐☆☆☆

On build day, everything arrived on time as promised, and the team were friendly and happy for us to take photos along the way. They worked at incredible speed — almost too fast. Unfortunately, this emphasis on speed came at the cost of quality.

Several issues emerged: mud and grass stains were left on interior wood panels, cracked or damaged panels were visible inside and out, and the inward-facing window frame was damaged during delivery. One of the glass panels was scratched, the signature diamond at the front was cracked by an over-tightened screw, and two windows weren’t secured properly and rattled in the wind. The interior was left dusty and messy, and the external wood cuts were frayed and uneven — likely due to blunt blades. A noticeable half-centimetre gap between the roof and the wall in one corner was letting in air (and potentially water).

When I raised these concerns, the team onsite said they didn’t have basic items like sandpaper, cloths, new blades, filler, or tools to correct the issues — and simply said they’d take a photo and report it back to their boss.

Painting – ⭐⭐☆☆☆

Ah, the painting. Be warned — this is not a light DIY task. While Johnson do explain that you’re responsible for painting, the actual workload is substantial. Treating thousands of knots, sealing, sanding, undercoating with a thick paint, and carefully removing/replacing window seals and roof facias to avoid voiding the warranty is a huge undertaking. I’m nearly done now, and while the final look is fantastic, the process has been anything but enjoyable.

Aftercare – ⭐⭐☆☆☆

Initially, aftercare seemed promising. A snagging technician arrived within days and resolved a few of the issues — replacing the cracked diamond, sealing the air gap (via a tube of sealer I was expected to apply), securing the loose windows, and providing a drill bit to help with facia removal. He was also honest about the build team lacking basic supplies and mentioned that the builders receive a finish-early bonus, which, in my opinion, may be driving speed over quality. Had I known this, I might have offered to offset the bonus to incentivise a higher-quality finish.

Unfortunately, after that initial visit, all follow-up has gone silent. Weeks have passed with no update about the damaged window and other outstanding issues. I contacted the sales team, who said aftercare is a separate department and they don’t often communicate with one another — which is disappointing and frustrating.

Overall – ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

Despite all of the above, I do love my finished garden room. It's a great space to work from — warm, comfortable, and connected with full electrics and gigabit broadband installed. It’s just a shame that the rushed build and lack of proactive aftercare let down what could have been a 5-star experience.

I’d recommend Johnson Garden Buildings with a strong caveat: be prepared to chase for aftercare, and don’t underestimate the work involved in painting. If you can manage those, the end result is a lovely space — but getting there may take more effort than you expect.

Karl & Ryan worked so hard in the 4 days on site building our cabin. They explained everything, were knowledgeable & very pleasant. Highly recommend them. The cabin is excellent!

Dominic S and Tom F fitted our garden room to a very high standard. We’re delighted with the finished result and thought Dominic and Tom were very thorough, courteous and professional - they did a really great job, including removing all the rubbish at the end of the installation.

Cabin delivered on time. Ryan and Karl our two fitters were exceptional with their work and were very friendly, and left everything clean and tidy.

John was very helpful and did his utmost to ensure we selcted rhe building that was right for us, at the best price.

The team have been excellent! Natalie has been really helpful in answering all our questions thoroughly. Henry was great on the site visit and practical knowledge too!

A fantastic garden building erected by 3 superb fitters.

The product itself is top quality but the finish from James, Dom and Jay is sensational.

They where the most Polite and friendly guys, the three days they were here and they clearly love what they do and built us the most amazing summer house it was a pleasure having them here :)

Tom & Matt were excellent. They were polite, professional & skilled and kept us informed all the way. They were also very friendly which is always a plus. They were particularly patient when doing the handover which we appreciated. We are very happy customers!

My installation team of Aaron Weller and Jack Webb have just finished installing my garden cabin. My husband and I are delighted, everything went very smoothly and they were very hard working and efficient. They made very little mess (obviously a little sawdust gets blown around which is unavoidable ) and left everything tidy. They took care not to damage plants and lawn as they brought everything in. Very happy.

We visited the Crews Hill site 21 February and we were very impressed how it was all laid out. Afterwards we went into the office and spoke to a lovely lady Jackie and she was so helpful. The site visit was conducted very quickly the next day. Paul Kirby was so helpful and was early for his appointment. I placed the order on the 23 February. I was amazed how quickly I came to my decision and I think it was because I received all the information I needed and Jackie and her other colleague (from the Colchester branch) were super helpful. I was very impressed by the speed and efficiency. Thank you.

We visited the Johnsons Garden Buildings site at Alver valley in Gosport. We were allowed to walk around the display units without interference and the salesman came out and gave us a bag with details of all the garden rooms, levels of finish and prices. There was absolutely no hard sale. After looking at the catalog and price list we went back to ask more questions and arrange a site visit. Zak was very helpful and came out the same day to confirm that the garden house could be erected where requested and what up front work was required. At no time were we put under pressure to purchase there and then and we went back the next day to place an order. The whole experience from first viewing the show cabins, arranging the site visit and making the purchase including advice on the most suitable package for us and build options available, ie types of door panels, window location, insulation, roof covering and preferred colour was extremely professional from start to finish. We are now eagerly awaiting a date for delivery and build.

My wife and I are very impressed by our experience when buying our garden room.
The manager, Mr Langford, is a most pleasant and personable young man. Throughout the process, he was very professional, patient and exceptionally helpful. We would be very happy to recommend him and your company to our family, friends and acquaintances

Joe and Graeme, we're great in all respects of the installation of our garden house. They arrived as planned, worked tirelessly throughout the day and cleared away as they went.

This is a true and accurate reflection based on my experience with Johnsons Garden Buildings. I have left reviews on other sites however Johnsons have blocked me from making my honest reviews.

All I wanted was for the issues to be resolved/ managed so that I could leave a positive review about the 'customer aftercare' but unfortunately this did not happen.

Would NOT recommend. I have had problems with my beautiful cabin leaking for 4 years ( since it was built). In order to try and rectify the issues, I've had many visits from their engineers sometimes turning up on the wrong day/ not at all when arranged appointments. As Johnsons refused to take responsibility/ rectify issues ( at least 4 different managers to liaise with) I raised a case with the financial ombudsman. Johnsons were directed to put things right. They had to put 'double walls' all round. Johnsons wanted me to pay an extra £4500 for 2 side walls however FOS directed them to resolve the issue without extra cost to me. They then refused to paint it so I had to pay to have the new walls painted. Definitely would NOT recommend.
Hopefully my review will not be deleted.

In response to Johnsons response, I would like to clarify that covid had nothing to do with how long it took for the issues to be resolved. The cabin issues were not rectified until 2023 and if I had agreed to the second side walls being erected before going through the financial ombudsman, Johnsons expected me to pay over £4500 for these. They also refused to paint the 4 new walls so I had to pay for this. I would appreciate Johnsons having their facts right before responding to my review.

Johnsons made the whole experience of getting a garden building so easy.
From the first chat in the showroom, to Henry’s site visit, all my questions were answered and they gave great advice.
Matt, Dominic and Tom the fitters were so friendly and professional, their attention to detail was superb. I am so happy with the result. Thank you!

Max at Chelsham has been superb from start to finish.
The lads who installed the building - brothers from Whitstable - were very professional and polite.
ACY Electrical team were also v helpful and professional.
Also a big shout out to Joe and Jordan who installed our hot tub. They were super cool, v professional and went out of their way to accommodate our requests. V happy customers
