Cancelled & Still Charged + AI Customer Service
To the absolute best of my knowledge I cancelled before my trial expired. I completed my reminder and ticked it off in my to-do list... when I eventually went back to cancel it again I recognised every step of the journey. I never used the service since the "cancellation" and I never had another email from them, it's like they were hiding.
I noticed a charge in my bank 4 months later. and Immediately emailed to explain the situation, and I got a pretty generic response asking for more details on what I didn't like about the service with dates and screenshots.
I replied noting that they didn't really read my email and their comments and requests didn't make sense. But I answered as best I could. They replied again declining the refund, talking adjacently to the issue again.
"Cancellation would have been required before the end of the free trial" ... "As we have not received any cancellation request" ... "no refund is due on the account."
I totally get it that the ball is in their court 100% I can't PROVE that I wen't through the cancellation process, but what I have learned is to make sure you get a cancellation confirmation email and take a screenshot/photo with some provable date and time in it.

Needed it for a mortgage
Needed it for a mortgage and ended up keeping it active for a while so I could see the changes with my credit score after a few things were paid off and closed. Overall great experience using the site and very easy to navigate. Would recommend to anyone if your looking for an in depth look into your credit history.

No renewal reminders, no payment notifications, and months of charges for a service I wasn’t using
Really disappointed with how Checkmyfile handles subscriptions following its free trial.
I signed up for the trial and subsequently discovered that I had been charged £14.99 every month for several months. During that entire period, I received no reminder that the free trial was about to convert to a paid subscription, no monthly billing notifications and no payment receipts alerting me that another £14.99 had been taken.
I also essentially haven’t used the service since signing up, which Checkmyfile should be able to verify from my account activity. Had I received even one clear billing notification, I would have realised immediately and cancelled.
When I raised this, their response was that the subscription was explained in the original welcome email and, remarkably, that they “don’t send notifications for individual payments because we’re confident that our subscribers are aware of the services that they have signed up to.”
I find that response particularly concerning. Opening a welcome email when registering for a free trial is not the same thing as consciously deciding, month after month, to continue paying for a service you aren’t using.
The Government is introducing new UK subscription rules specifically designed to provide greater protection around these practices, including reminder requirements relating to free or discounted trials. While those particular rules are not yet in force, the fact that legislation has been introduced to address this issue says a great deal about why transparent subscription reminders matter.
For a service that moves from a short free trial into an automatically recurring £14.99 monthly payment, I think sending customers a simple reminder before charging to or at the very least notifying them when payments are subsequently taken, is a basic standard of transparency.
I’ve asked Checkmyfile to refund the months in which I was charged despite not using the service and have asked for the matter to be escalated.
I’ll update this review to reflect how they ultimately choose to resolve it.

We do try to make it as clear as possible throughout the registration process that Checkmyfile is a paid subscription with a free trial for new customers. In addition to including this in our Welcome email, we mention it on the registration page, when card details are provided and in our Terms of Use.
We also include our full company name and contact information on all payments debited to us, to make it easy to keep track of our subscription. You can cancel a Checkmyfile subscription online, over the phone or via email at any time, including during our free trial.
That said, we appreciate that, in this instance, your subscription was active longer than you wanted, and you've provided feedback on what actions you feel could have made this easier to spot. This is really helpful, as we're constantly learning and improving how we do things to provide a better service for our customers.

no transparency in subscription reminders
My issue isn't that Checkmyfile hides the £14.99 monthly price - it doesn't. My issue is what happens at the end of the very short seven-day trial.
I wasn't sent a reminder shortly before the trial expired to say that £14.99 was about to be taken. I only dealt with the subscription once I noticed the payment.
What makes this particularly frustrating is that the Government is now introducing new subscription rules specifically designed to address this sort of situation. These will require businesses to send reminders before free or discounted trials end, helping to prevent people unintentionally rolling into paid subscriptions. The rules aren't in force yet, but to me it says quite a lot that this exact practice has been identified as something requiring greater consumer protection.
For something that automatically moves from free to paid after just seven days, I think a simple reminder beforehand would have been the fair and transparent thing to do.
I also find it disappointing from an FCA-regulated company, where I would have expected a particularly high standard of transparency and customer communication.
I've asked for the £14.99 to be refunded and for the matter to be treated as a formal complaint if they refuse. I'll update this review to reflect how they ultimately deal with it.

Easy, accessible & would recommend!
I was recommended Checkmyfile through a mortgage advisor. It was easy to sign up and took a couple of minutes to enter the information needed, I was then presented with my credit score, tips and advice to improve, and lots of other things related to my credit file.
The website was easy to navigate, it was bright and colourful which I personally found appealing, and the option to download your credit report was great. My report took around 5 minutes to generate and there were a lot of pages to go through! But everything was organised and explained clearly and it was very accessible.
I would recommend Checkmyfile, and if you aren’t 100% sure, there’s a free 7 day trial so you can try it out before committing to regular monthly payments.

Great Accessibility Tool for Credit, UI could be improved
Customer service is absolutely incredible. Having one point of contact to reach out to CRAs on your behalf is not only easier, but also as a point of accessibility for those of us who may otherwise struggle otherwise to track many separate email chains.
I’m currently preparing to apply for a mortgage and ensuring all my credit reporting is accurate.
Something I would feed back to the check my file team is that the UI is annoying. The ‘combination view’ and switching between CRA’s under each lender is not user friendly. It’s not impossible, it’s just not user friendly. You fixed something that wasn’t broken from when I had check my file last year. I had some screenshots of older version of UI and it’s makes so much more sense from a user perspective.
All in all great - just annoying UI at some points but absolutely shouldn’t put anyone off.
Worth the ££ if you’re cleaning up your credit file and/or prepping for mortgage.
