Very Disappointed with the Experience at Cake House Bakery, Leicester (Melton Road)

I had a highly disappointing experience with Cake House Bakery on Melton Road, Leicester. From customer service to the quality of the cake, everything left much to be desired.

On August 27, 2024, I visited the bakery in person to order an 8-inch fruit cake for collection at 6 pm on August 28, 2024. The cake I chose from their display had various fruits on it, including oranges, pineapples, strawberries, and blueberries. However, when I placed the order, the manager informed me that they do not include blueberries on the cake. When I asked why, the owner responded in a very arrogant and sarcastic manner, saying, "After all, for an 8-inch cake, we can't get a box of blueberries."

I was quite taken aback by this response. I replied that the size or quantity doesn't matter—if the picture shows blueberries, the cake should have them, especially since it's blueberry season! It was frustrating to see them justifying the lack of blueberries when they are charging £30 for an 8-inch cake. The conversation ended on that unsatisfactory note, and I left feeling concerned about the service.

On August 28, 2024, I went back to collect the cake. When I got home and opened the box, I was shocked to see that the fruits on top, particularly the pineapples and strawberries, were not fresh—they looked like they were in a poor state. To add to the disappointment, the cake was supposed to be a Victoria sponge, but it was far from sponge-like. The taste was extremely poor, and the quality was definitely not up to standard.

Overall, I had a terrible experience from start to finish—poor staff attitude, subpar quality, and disappointing taste. Such a combination of negative factors is something no customer should have to go through. Based on this experience, I will never recommend Cake House Bakery to anyone I know. This will be my last purchase from them.

As loyal customers for over two years, we've always enjoyed the cakes from this shop every other week. UNFORTUNATELY, our recent experiences have been disappointing. The branch owner has started behaving stubbornly and rudely, which is a stark contrast to the friendly service we used to receive. We've also noticed a frequent change in staff, which has affected the quality and taste of the cakes.
The cakes no longer taste fresh, and on more than one occasion, we've been sold cakes that seemed to be from the previous day. This is concerning, especially when we expect freshly baked cakes each time we visit.
Our latest visit was particularly frustrating. A very young girl was left to manage the shop on her own, clearly without proper training. She struggled to understand the products and how to serve customers, which is unfair to her and to us as customers. The fault here lies with the management, not the young employee, who was clearly trying her best.
We hope the management takes these concerns seriously and works to restore the quality and service that made us loyal customers in the first place.
