Initial cost estimate way cheaper than final total

Firstly I must say that every associate there were very polite, friendly and helpful.

I felt, however, there was a large element of “bait and switch” going on. I had a 10x20 foot storage unit to move. I hadn’t seen the inside for 5 years. The first guy said I would need 12 linear feet of trailer. I liked the price and the time.
A second associate calls a few days later to confirm and suggests I need 4 more linear feet and better to prepay before pick up at a cheaper price.
Ok I said. Then on day of loading I still need more space that I had to pay a premium for.
If I had known in the beginning the total amount, I would have done the U-Haul myself. It would definitely have been cheaper by far, but at the outset, on the initial sale, it was only marginally less expensive.
Buyer beware.

Short notice cancellation by Moving Place

After requiring repeated phone calls to complete the truck reservation when I’m busy trying to pack, I was informed one week before the scheduled drop off that the truck driver would not park on gravel, only pavement. The truck driver needed only to drop off the trailer onto gravel right next to the paved road. The cab’s tires would not have left the pavement. Gravel is there exactly to prevent vehicles getting stuck. It’s Appalachia y’all. Most people have gravel roads and driveways. The movers I used when I moved in had no problem parking there. Too bad they don’t cover my area any more. The only options provided by MovingPlace were to shell out a bunch more money to pay them to shuttle my stuff to their warehouse 50 miles away, or do that myself, then pay them thousands to move my stuff as scheduled. That’s absurd. They ought to have mentioned they are afraid of gravel on their website. MovingPlace is lousy. If you live in Appalachia or anywhere else rural, you know, the majority of the country, don’t waste your time with them.

Movingplace uses 28 and 53ft tractor trailers for cross-country transport. Unfortunately, we cannot take those large trucks onto gravel roads as they will get stuck and the move will turn into a disaster. We can still help with the move, but will have to charge to shuttle the goods with a smaller truck capable of going down gravel roads. There is a cost associated with that and we will price that up front. Unfortunately for this customer, we found out about the gravel road after the move had been booked and had to either have them pay for us to shuttle the goods (at cost, not marked up) or have them arrange to shuttle the goods to our terminal. This was not acceptable to them so they cancelled their order. If you are a customer reading this, please let us know up front if you live down a gravel road so that you do not have this type of issue after your move is booked.

Bait & Switch

Bait & Switch. Stay away. Don’t waste your time. I was quoted a price of $2800 for a move. Good thing I stayed focused as I called when I had a problem completing my commitment to the order. The day after I agreed to the estimate they told me the “local mover hasn’t confirmed the job.” I’m puzzled as I was told that always happens right after the “estimate” is submitted.
Well, the next day, they said there were other teams that would gladly do the move from $3800 or $4100. So, I quickly noted the bait & switch tactic they were trying to use. I guess they’d figured I was hard up to get it done and would roll over on the price. Wrong. I found an alternative company that actually gave me a lower price than the $2800
Do yourself a favor and avoid this slick company who takes people for granted as they try to rip them off.

Please note, the notice of my planned move was NOT at all “short.” I called 2 weeks out and was given no indication the notice was anything like short. By the way, I was flexible and could have changed the date. This response holds NO water. Once again…this is a rip-off company. Please avoid for your own sake…

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience. The country is currently in a transportation crisis with no availability in some markets and limited availability in others. As a broker, we connect you with the best possible transportation provider at the lowest cost. This move had been quoted based on anticipated availability and had not been confirmed nor bound with an order. Once an order is confirmed, the charges stand exactly as committed. In this case, the order was unable to be confirmed with a carrier as it was extremely short-notice with no flexibility and all availability was booked. Our only option to complete the order in the time frame demanded would have been to book an out-of-state provider to come in, hence the extra charges. Had there been more notice and/or flexibility to wait for our lowest-priced option, we certainly could have performed the move at the discounted pricing. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience and are taking this situation as an opportunity to better train our staff in communicating accurately the challenges with ordering moves on short notice.

DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY. Our stuff is over a week late arriving, they sent 10 boxes to move our nearly 4,000 square feet home, they have lied to us over and over about when our stuff will arrive. We hired them to make the move easier and it has been an unmitigated nightmare. DO NOT HIRE THEM, they are the absolute worst.

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. 2 helpers arrived at 530 PM to load, hours late. No boxes. Ramp broken so took HOURS EXTRA. My hubby helped. Told take pic of trailer. I did. Emailed, we used all, they saw video of our things, badly underestimated size. We had to go back to FL for u haul. Told next day when I was at airport, they were cutting lock off! Why?? They moved and destroyed our things. Mattress was in front when we locked. When we opened, they had greasy bar across our cloth headboard. Mattresses ripped , covers torn, greasy, thrown on top, lamps broken, wrought iron table thrown in and broken. Over 8k damaged. Told by Ken Mercado in sales we were FULLY INSURED. I asked a LOT OF QUESTIONS. When trailer opened here, ramp they replaced was broken also. 🤬. Had to come back next day to finish. Finished at midnight on day they unloaded due to bad ramp. Hubby unloaded again. There were prob 50 calls between Hire a helper, another subcontractor, and moving place during load and unload. We filed claim. Told we needed insurance from ANOTHER WEBSITE! Not in contract or told that. Told we would get $600 something. Not even half of our 1 yr old mattress, not to mention 4k temperpedic they damaged. Told hold on to them. Why? Now pd to get damaged stuff picked up.

100% misleading communication

100% misleading communication throughout the process -- go with another company if you want to feel confident in your move.

Here's a list of things that I was told, often by multiple people both on the sales side and support side, that ended up contradicting each other or were straight fabrications. When I informed the supervisor, Omar, about these his explanation was that his staff "was new". I find it unlikely that everybody from sales and 4 separate people in support were all new. So, the most charitable explanation for these problems was a bunch of new staff; the other explanation of course is that they were deliberately misleading customers throughout, and once they had paid they don't care what happens.

1) Sales: they tell you that if you put the deposit down you will lock in the dates they give you. This is not true; they are not locked in until *after* you put the deposit down and they check with the dispatcher. I had already booked local movers for packing/unpacking so this was problematic.

2) In sales and support: you will be able to secure your belongings on the truck behind some sort of locked mechanism. I was told this by both a sales person, which got me to agree to their business, and by **2** different support people. This is not how it works. There is no lock. You can't lock any of your things. You just put them on the truck and hope everything is ok.

By the way, when I asked Omar about how I could feel confident that nobody would try to take anything from my completely unsecured belongings, he said "we use professional movers" and if it were him "he would 100% want a lock on it" -- Again, you CANNOT lock it.

3) If you use the whole truck (they charge you per linear foot) the truck will be fully secured. Also not true. I used the whole truck, told MovingPlace / Hire a Helper, and my lock was still cut off the trailer.

4) Pick up of both the loaded and unloaded trailer by the dispatch folks is automatic and you do not need to be present for this. I'm still not sure what the actual answer is here. I was told multiple times, assured even, that I would not need to be present for the full truck to be picked up. I even booked a flight based on that assurance. 24 hours before it was picked up I was told I was "supposed to be" present and if anything happened that it was my fault.

5) That I would receive notification via email or phone call during the move when the truck was checked for how much space was used, and then I would be notified for how much I would be charged for the extra space.

This just did not happen. I had no idea what was going on during the move, never received any communication. 5 days after the truck showed up I was charged $2k more than my quoted estimate for the move. Never received a receipt, invoice, confirmation of payment. They just charged my credit card.

There were many other minor communication discrepancies and contradictions but you get the point.

We have actually stopped booking orders until August because of the extreme volume of shipments in the system and communication challenges as a result. Second move with MovingPlace!

Just did my second move with MovingPlace and had another great experience. We saved thousands in comparison to a full-service move. Everyone I talked with was extremely pleasant, knowledgeable and helpful. Many thanks to Stuart, Jeff and Chris!

Horrible Experience

I used this service based on positive reviews I read on both the bbb.org website and Trustpilot. Unfortunately, my experience was horrible. When the driver dropped the trailer off to load my stuff, I told him that I may not finish loading the day he dropped it off. He told me not to worry about it and just to call when I was ready to have the trailer picked up. The next morning another driver came to pick up the trailer and I informed him that the previous driver had told me just to call when I was ready for pickup. When I called Moveex to discuss this, they told me there would be an additional charge. I told them I felt this was unfair based on what the original driver told me. When the trailer was delivered to my destination, the loading ramp was very unsafe to use, it had a foot long hole in it.

We appreciate the feedback and are glad that the vast majority of our reviews reflect the positive experience that we try to give every customer. For every move, Movingplace sends detailed instructions and a move schedule that is agreed to by the customer. The move schedule is coordinated in advance with dispatch and we specifically instruct customers that any changes to the schedule cannot be made with the driver and to contact us to make changes if needed. The truck was dropped off and picked up according to the written schedule to which Mr Faulkner agreed. He was not ready for the pickup when it was scheduled, so we had to make a return trip to retrieve the truck. This charge was correctly applied and was part of the relocation agreement that Mr. Faulkner signed when booking his order.

The Moving Place is the BEST

The Moving Place made our move so much easier! Everything went so smoothly, the truck was dropped off and picked up perfectly on schedule and was waiting for us at our new home out of state. The drivers and the staff were extremely helpful when we had any questions. I am so glad we went with this company all of our belongings and furniture were very well taken care of. We moved from California to Idaho And I am so glad we chose this company to trust with such a big move. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a moving company!

10/10 from start to finish

From the initial phone call, everyone had great communication. They created a move that worked with my budget and honored the dates requested. Service was punctual and drivers were more than capable of handling the arrangements; very professional and accommodating team. There was a minor miscommunication, however, they resolved it promptly and to my convenience. From start to finish, a great experience.

Incredible Customer service from start…

Incredible Customer service from start to finish ! Moving is hard and very expensive. But Jeff with the moving place, made it all very simple and stress free. From the beginning ,Jeff explained the long distant move from Overland Park Ks to Fountain hills Az approximately 1200 miles would not go by weight but by the lineal feet of trailer space . I purchase 16 lineal feet and went over 1 lineal foot and was charge the 1 foot over! Pretty simple. The delivery of trailer to Overland Park was on time and the delivery of home goods to Fountain Hills Az actually came, one day early, Pick up of trailer was also on time! The drivers were very professional! My final bill was exactly as agreed from start to finish! Happy, Happy , Happy!

Damage and Dishonest Service

We had a really bad experience with moving place.
• We negotiated for a 4 foot deep space for $1500 that was 9 feet tall and more than 9 feet across. Plenty of room for a studio apartment, when the driver arrived he told my daughter (dishonestly) that she actually purchased as much space as she wanted. So mistakenly thinking he was being honest she went over the 4 feed deep and then dishonsetly moving place charged her more than $4500. The only furniture items she had were 4 bookshelves, a double bed and a small love seat which could easily have been stacked on end but the moving company we felt intentionally tried to take advantage of my 27 year old daughter who was doing a cross country move to the first time. We felt that she was intentionally led make this mistake so that they could "overcharge her" unnecessarily over $3000 !!!!!!
• 2) Multiple items arrived damaged and broken. There was an oily grease all over the loveseat, a small stool all of the bookshelves and all drawers from the storage bed. This rendered the items unusable and broken in her new space. So now, they took $4500 from her but left her with NOTHING no usuable furniture and they will not pay a reasonable amount in a damage claim to replace the items.
• 3) They missed their scheduled delivery date 3 times. We blocked out a whole day of missed work each time only to have the driver never show up. When he finally did arrive he said that he would not come to the drop off location and wanted us to meet him at an area gas station. There was no way to do this as it was a live unload and we were unloading into a storage unit. / In summary.... buyer beware... this company really treated us poorly and it felt like a bait and switch to us.

We hate to see a bad review like this and really try to prevent the frustration that can cause a review like this. Please let us clarify that this customer was NOT charged $4500. The entire move, including all of the extra space used, was $2720.00 for a shipment from Providence, RI all the way to Flagstaff, AZ. We do everything that we can to keep our customers informed and not have situations like this. When you get a price quote from Movingplace, we quote based on the space used on the truck. We put this pricing in writing, for example, 10 feet of space for $1500. We also let you know how much each extra foot of space used on the truck will cost ($129 for each extra foot, etc). This is on the cover page of our contract highlighted in yellow and bolded. This is also in bold print on the front page of the contract. This is also re-iterated in our operational email to the customer that goes out the day before the move and is in red letter, italicized, and bold. There is absolutely no reason for a customer to think that they can pay a price for a set amount of space and then use as much space on the truck as they want without paying for it. Yes, the driver will inform you that you can use as much space as you would like, but that does not mean that the space is free! This is why we put it in writing with tremendous emphasis in 3 different places at 3 different times in the moving order process.

As for the damages, the first time that we were informed that there was anything wrong with this shipment was a month and a half after the shipment delivered (this complaint was filed on August 9th. The shipment delivered on June 14th). We have sent the customer claim forms today and will be processing a damage claim for them.

When we arrived at the destination, there was no way for us to get the big truck to where they wanted it. We worked with them to find an alternative delivery location. While this may have been inconvenient, this did not cost them any additional money and we spent several extra hours with a truck and trailer on site to figure out how to accommodate this delivery.

It is very important to us that our customer's feel that they have been treated not only fairly, but with the highest amount of integrity. We are working on resolution with this customer.

Fantastic Experience

Everyone at the Moving Place was super friendly, accommodating, and very helpful. My stuff got moved across country with no snags. Would definitely use them again!

We have very good experience with Moving Place. Chris is very nice professional man there. There is no hidden fee. Very straight forward people. We got our move very cool from Memphis to Edinberg TX. I highly recommend for this company.

The company right now is very busy and…

The company right now is very busy and has my business then I have drivers to deliver my heart this is not me they’re good or bad it’s just a fact

He offered very little flexibility but they did try to work with me And example of this is that my container was empty on Thursday and I had to wait until Monday to have the empty container picked up

We dealt with three drivers two were inexperienced and slightly in adequate the third was very professional very good
