Locked out, auto-renew failed, long-held business domain lost and auctioned — no accountability
I am writing this as a long-standing business customer of 123 Reg / GoDaddy.
This has been a disastrous experience. I was locked out / unable to access the account properly at the critical time, which meant I could not update payment details, manage renewals, or put the correct card back on the account. Auto-renew did not protect the domains as it should have, and I could not get in to fix the issue.
The result was that important business domains connected to my company, brand, and industry reputation were lost. One of these domains had been associated with us for around 25 years. It was not abandoned. It was not unwanted. It was part of our business identity.
In my view, the domain was then pushed into the auction/resale system when it should never have ended up there. I entered the dispute process and provided evidence of our long-standing connection to the domain, but still did not get it back. To appeal or take the matter further would have cost thousands more, with no realistic guarantee of success, so the original business owner is left facing impossible costs just to try to recover a domain that was already connected to their own business.
I also asked 123 Reg for proper proof of expiry notifications and supporting records. Instead, I was sent a generic invoices link and told automated notifications could not be resent. That is not good enough when business-critical domains have been lost.
The corporate responsibility is also confusing. 123 Reg and GoDaddy appear linked within the same wider domain ecosystem, yet when I contacted GoDaddy I received a denial that they had anything to do with the matter. From a customer’s point of view, this leaves you passed around with no clear accountability while your domain is gone.
Another of our domains is now parked by a third party showing spam-style adverts while still displaying our business email address, causing obvious confusion and reputational damage.
From my experience, this system is dangerous for businesses. If you are locked out, unable to renew, unable to update payment details, or cannot get support in time, your domain can disappear and then end up in the auction/resale environment. You are then left fighting, paying, or disputing to recover something that was clearly connected to your own business.
I no longer have confidence in 123 Reg, GoDaddy, or the related auction/resale process for business-critical domains.
My advice to every business owner: do not assume your domains are safe. Keep your own independent domain register, check renewals manually, keep screenshots, keep proof of payments, and move important domains away before you end up locked out and fighting to recover your own name.
This felt like a system where a long-standing business domain can be lost, auctioned, monetised, disputed, and still not returned - while the original owner is left paying, fighting, and trying to prove what should have been obvious from the start.
Completely unreliable host for email
Completely unreliable host for email. Our staff have been unable to access emails through outlook most of the week. If it was my company, I wouldn't touch 123-reg with a bargepole. They are incompetent.
TERRIBLE SERVICE
TERRIBLE SERVICE. Every time I call they are extremely rude and useless. The third operator I was just on the phone to hung up the phone on my face because he didn't know how to resolve my issue.
service is getting worse …
regular issues with email -authntication, but then the stored password is ok and later on works fine - 123reg used to be good, with high levels of service - what’s happened?
Their service is idiotic
Their service is idiotic. They keep sending reset advice to the account I can’t access instead of sending it to a different one of my email addresses which I can acces
Not even worth it for free - avoid!
As others have said - awful & not what they used to be. Their website builder is now rubbish with the 'personal' package effectively completely useless
I renewed the paid email service and they deleted my emails
I renewed the paid email service , they deleted all of my emails and despite contacting them with in recovery time they now say it’s too late .
Not professional at all , avoid if you can
Appalling service
I received an email telling me about the retirement of ports on email where I have a domain and a couple of mailboxes. I found it unclear but changed the ports to see if my service would continue to work. It didn't so I swapped them back and had a word with support who opened a ticket to query it. As I was about to close the chat guy said he noted my mailboxes were due for renewal and offered about a £30 reduction in renewal fees if I wanted to do it then. I thought that sounded okay so I'd renew for 12 months. I limited it to that because we've not been too happy with them for a while. Everything has become over complicated and what we got for our money has significantly reduced.
The guy said I'll start the process then. I was expecting to be asked for a debit card but instead a screen came up saying that my wife's account had been deleted. I wasn't happy but was assured that it would all be resolved and with some complicated messing around it appeared to be re-instated. He then went on to do the same with mine which didn't take as long.
On the face of it, things seemed to be okay. I was concerned about my wife's account because it had taken literally months to port her POP3 mail from her old PC to a new one that had Win11 and MS 365 as standard when supplied. That involved a swap to IMAP The 123 perception was that it was Outlook and not 123 causing the problems. My son who knows nothing about Outlook or 123 had a look at the problem and suggested that as 123 were washing their hands of it, she should contact Microsoft. Unbelievably from my standpoint they had an engineer based in the USA working on her PC in two sessions for about six hours. He said it was not Outlook that was the problem. Eventually it was accepted that there was some internal 123 issue causing valid user credentials to be rejected. And it was fixed in her case. After the antics which I'd expected to be a simple financial transaction, her email seemed unaffected.
My email however would not work. There had been no complexity involved but I had acquired the rejection of good credentials problem seen months before. When looking at my account control settings etc, I found that my forwarders had all been deleted in the transfer.
First line support has been good and helpful, but second line has been useless. A reply ticket told me I had been blocked because of multiple failed log ins and then gave me a cut and paste telling me how to get my credentials right. No email for a few days now and still nothing more than the original response.
If I'd not accepted what was offered as a financial transaction I wouldn't be in this mess.
NOTE:
Tried to log in to my account the next day to forward my mail elsewhere to maintain some external essential links but was told that credentials didn't match and to alter password. When I tried I was told the account doesn't exist.
Cannot access webmail
Cannot access webmail, message to try again in 10 minutes. All day no access. Check my account, told I have no products. Try the help they get me to change password, and then they tell me they cannot help any further! Eventually email works late at night. This morning not working. Same problem all over again. Do not use this company. I am now going to change company, these are useless, you certainly cannot use them for business far too unreliable
Sarcastic and rude helper
Sarcastic and rude helper, since they moved to 123reg, its doubled in price and the help is awful, waiting times for help are unacceptable. Withghb the help being what I already know, in a deliberate attempt to extract more money from me. Used car salesmen of the web-hosting world. Do not join them.
Awful company to deal with never use…
Awful company to deal with never use them, the support is sooooooooooooooo BAD
A customer for 20+ years? No more.
I've been a 123-Reg customer since 2003.
No issues for years, domains ticked along, no problem.
However, 123-Reg is now an internet relic that should remain firmly in the past.
Recently I wasn't able to login with my existing password.
1) Tried to reset my password, account no longer exists.
2) Tried to register an account, it says "email is already in use".
Great system.
Contacted support who sent my down a rabbit hole of dealing with the account recovery team.
Passport, utility bill sent - still no luck. I had to keep hounding the team as my domain was set to expire in weeks. Replies took days.
Absolutely shocking service.
I even requested an invoice in the interim to at least be able to renew my domain.
Completely ignored. Luckily I had auto-renew on.
The team eventually replied, saying I should have access? No luck.
They said I should contact customer service! I called customer service, who said they can't do anything and to reply again to the accounts team.
Incredibly incompetent, poor service from a previously highly regarded company.
Finally got access - took weeks to be resolved.
Will be moving domains away from this dinosaur of a provider asap.
Unethical company
Unethical company. Dreadful online sales tactics & trying every trick in the sales book to upsell their products. Avoid.
Saved my life!
This was going to be a one star review, after by billing lapsed and I didn't realize my server was deleted!
Huge issue, 123 Reg claimed there was nothing to be done but they carried on trying and lo and behold they got my server back up and running!
Despite the long wait times the staff are always as helpful as possible and pleasant to speak to.
I was of course emotional and angry and they were very very calm and helped in what ever way possible.
I want to thank everyone involved with my case!
great experience
easy set up, easy to navigate the website the only thing i dislike is i had to try to reach out to the customer support more than 2 times for them to answer
Terrible Customer Service
Locked out of my account - resetting back up email now not recognized - three days sending details of something i all ready own and pay for only to say they have no record of me - waste of time ringing -
DO I TRUST 123-reg?
Less than 1 star. 123-reg asked me to confirm a payment with my bank, my bank, Starling, flagged up that they never ask for confirmation.
I’m stuck in the middle….. I’ve been trying to renew a domain for over a week, I can’t do it online, tried many, many, many times and I get a warning from 123-reg that they cannot process my payment, yet the card is correct, I have money in the bank.
It all started because I wanted to extend my ownership of a domain I own a domain
2 can b 1 on a .com because I’m selling it on GoDaddy who own 123-reg. Then all the trouble started!
Between the two of them I wonder if they’ll be waiting to snap it up for peanuts after 3 years
DISGUSTING
DISGUSTING. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
I have been locked out of my account and I am unable to provide the documents they are asking for as my business is no longer trading. I dealt with customer service which was extremely poor, when I asked the name of the person I was dealing with, they just hung up on me.
If you require any assistance from…
If you require any assistance from 123reg, forget it. Not only are the wait times far to long, once you do get through there is very little help regarding problems. I'm currently in the middle of migrating my site and im experiencing problems that they have no interest in sorting.
