Subscription Problems

No way to cancel auto renew. Took £249 renewal which I had to get refunded.
Mobile app flicked up advert for further digital services and I could not remove it. So could not read articles.
No effective complaints procedure.
My Account ays I have no active subscriptions when I clear do?
Requested close down of the subscription and removal of all my personal data and they said they could not do that for nearly 1 year - until subscription over.
Overall, horrible experience and I regret ever subscribing.

Is no longer a newspaper

Is no longer a newspaper. More a one sided right wing propaganda gossip sheet that just spreads speculation. Totally unbalanced.
Draws people in with short term free subscription then massively overcharges. You have to telephone to cancel. Presumably to take advantage of the unwary or thin skinned.

I’ve finally given up

Every year my subscription rate triples and every year I phone and get it back to where it was. Not this year - it took forever to get through to their call centre (obviously you can’t cancel digitally or I suspect they’d have no subscribers left) and I finally thought it was time to quit and go to the Times. You’re a great paper but you’re not that great to put up with b*ll*hit marketing tactics more prevalent in the double glazing trade - Nigel pay attention !!!

Subscription increase 549%

1 year’s subscription last year £69 this year £379!!
That’s an increase of 549%!!

Readers' comments problem

Contrary to most reviews here, I find The Telegraph to be a good online newspaper, with one major exception.
Whenever I read an article, I also look at readers' comments. The unfortunate feature with this, especially with popular articles, is that when I attempt to read a comment, the list invariably moves downwards as other comments are added. I can find no means to avoid this interruption.
In the case of GB News, this is not a problem. Why can't (or won't) The Telegraph address this problem?

Not user friendly

The UI seems a bit heavy making the UX heavy as well. As I used my mum's card, it gave me my mum's name despite me setting my account to my name. Things aren't easy to navigate and it takes long to apply changes.
The first person in the customer service was mildly unfriendly and a bit defensive. The second one was nice though.

Poor Value for money

I buy the Telegraph Paper every saturday as my weekly treat and even though it is a massive £4.50 i still buy it. Today having paid the £4.50, upon getting it home i noticed that not only was it less pages than normal, but ‘The Money’ insert was missing. But still the price was £4.50!!!

Perhaps the Editor and owners think us, their loyal readers and buyers, have lots of money? I do not.

Saddened and disappointed.

Edit - Update. Today a gentleman called Richard from the Telegraph rang me and discussed my concerns and disappointment. I am very impressed with both his gesture of ringing and also his explanation and advice regarding the Money Insert available in the Today Edition of The Telegraph. Indeed, I am particularly impressed with his generous offer to send me (via Royal Mail) todays Monday Telegraph in order that I can pursue the Money Insert. Thank you Richard.

What kind of company doesn’t let you…

What kind of company doesn’t let you manage your subscription online in 2025? The Telegraph, that’s who. Such a scummy move to make you phone in.
My sub all of a sudden was £24.99 a MONTH!!!
I couldn’t believe it. You call in and they try and get you to stay.
But it’s not the cost alone. It’s the quality of the paper. Overly pro conservative, full of reform hate.
In the end I realised I was supporting a paper that’s supports a party that ruined our country over 14 years.
So bye Telegraph. Never again.

Poor support

Reasonable online news coverage, but sports (football) is dreadful. Also, subscriptions to newsletters just don’t turn up. And trying to contact DT is impossible hence this review.

Mind blowing inefficiency.

I cannot begin to describe the awful toe curling experience of having to deal with the operatives on the customer service desk at the Telegraph. The call began with the agent running through the required introductory script (including confirming my preferred greeting) with an almost comedic lack of enthusiasm or engagement. I explained my issue, and the agent placed me on hold to seek advice on the matter. The agent returned and began to explain the resolution, but the line disconnected. The agent attempted a call back, but the line disconnected again.
I immediately called back and was, coincidentally, connected to the same agent with whom I had just been speaking (less than 90 seconds prior). Despite acknowledging that we had just been disconnected, the agent insisted on taking me through the entire welcome procedure again, including asking for my preferred greeting, and this was again delivered with a teenager's lack of enthusiasm.
Following this cringeworthy & unnecessary repetition of the introduction, the agent placed me on hold for a second time to seek advice on the exact same matter he had just sought advice on two minutes earlier.
Why was the introduction repeated when the agent had just spoken to me and acknowledged the immediate disconnection? This is simply a lack of common sense.
Why was advice sought a second time for the identical issue? Did the agent forget the advice he was given just moments before or had he failed to properly seek or record the necessary advice during the first hold.
Overall, a frustrating service experience made worse by the agent’s palpable lack of enthusiasm.

UPDAE: Check the T&Cs (but issue now resolved)

UPDATE: I’m leaving my original review below for transparency, but I wanted to give credit for how swiftly this was resolved once it reached the Customer Complaints team.

Richard, a Customer Complaints Manager at The Telegraph, got in touch directly, apologised for the service I received via Live Chat, and fully acknowledged the lack of empathy and goodwill shown during that interaction. While the initial issue was ultimately caused by my own oversight, it was reassuring to see that The Telegraph recognised that a more understanding approach should have been taken.

My subscription was cancelled, the £14.99 was refunded, and I was offered a goodwill gesture, which I’ve gratefully accepted. The response was clear, prompt, and genuinely helpful - a stark contrast to the experience that led me to write the original review.

I appreciate the effort made to put things right.

ORIGINAL REVIEW (kept for transparency): Signed up for a free trial, and when charged £14.99 asked them to explain it further they said when you signed up 6 months ago we'd charge you one day.

Despite their site saying "We email subscribers to confirm the renewal and ongoing price at least 14 days prior to the renewal date." apparently free trials don't count, so they rely on you forgetting you signed up months ago.

Online chat feature is pathetic at best, no email to complain so you either have to wait hours on the phone or pray the live chat works.

Just shameful.

Apparently I took out a 2-month free…

Apparently I took out a 2-month free subscription. Last month charged £14.99, which I cancelled, or thought I had. Found I'm charged again this month, Dec. Have cancelled, but I won't be refunded £14.99 as I have used the sub for 1 day, so refund is £14.51. I did not receive an email saying my free subscription had run out. I'm furious, but they just don't care.
