Cheating, Lying and Incompetent. AVOID AVOID AVOID!
My partner and I bought a property that was commercial and we intended to get planning permission for change of use to domestic. SSE were the commercial supplier to the property. I called SSE and they said it could not be changed to domestic until the planning permission had been obtained and it was on the Council Tax register. On the call the operative informed me of the commercial unit rates and daily standard charge. These were nothing short of extortionate compared to normal domestic rates.
A few weeks before we were about to move in, my partner beame ill and was diagnosed with a terminal brian tumour and given months to live. She died 8 months later and so my moving into the property was delayed by one year. SSE had started sending me bills, the daily standing charges and the unit prices were way above what I had been told on the telephone by their operative. When I questioned this they said that I was mistaken. I asked for a copy of the call recording as this would prove I had not made a mistake. I had written down the prices quoted on the day of the call for my records. SSE refused to give me a copy of the recording and would only send me a written transcript instead - this proves nothing as SSE could have written what they wanted to in it. I believe it is very telling that they refused to give me the actual recording because they knew the truth was on it.
I was unable to move as I needed to stay near my local large hospital to ensure my partner could have the chemo and radio therapy she needed. SSE still refused to give me the recording which meant they were able to keep charging me, at an even more extortionate rate than they had originally quoted, for another year even though the property was empty.
Even though they knew my partner was dying and then had died SSE continued to lie and extort money from me. I don't usually take this sort of behavior lying down. I am usually prepared to fight against this kind of cheating, lying and general all round incompetence. However on this occasion I initially had to prioritise the safety of my partner and then I was greiving and so I didn't have the energy to fight back as I normally would have done.
In short throughout this whole situation SSE have been dishonest, insensitive and obstuctive. AVOID this company at all costs - they are the worst energy supplier I have ever had the misfortune to deal with. Do NOT use this company as your energy supplier - you WILL regret it.

I phoned the SSE helpline as at 79 years old I was having difficulty registering to the online services. I cannot speak highly enough of the helpful support he gave.He was so kind and understanding and went above and beyond to assist me. His name was Declan and I think SSE should recognise what an asset he is to the company.His Mum must be very proud of him

Stupidly put my details into a energy comparison website to see what deals were on to then be inundated with calls from them, i have REPEATEDLY told them to take my number off their system.
Had some idiotic sales call man purposely speak over me and was also rude when i had to say “can you remove me from your system” 3 times to which i then just put the phone down.
I have blocked 2 of their numbers for them today to have called me on a 3rd number!
DO NOT GIVE THIS SHOCKINGLY IGNORANT COMPANY YOUR DETAILS!!!!!!

Billing issue resolution
Billing issue resolution. We have had many issues with SSE over the period we took service from them, but I can honestly say that Angus Turner, Complaints Management Advisor, went above and beyond to investigate the issues, clarify the SSE billing position and bring swift resolution.
After 3 years of overcharge / contact…
After 3 years of overcharge / contact etc. SSE have now 'blocked' us moving to a new supplier, as we are end of contract 31st May - Nobody ever call s you back or actually sorts anything out for you. Now with the Ombudsman - we shall see!
They use agressive 'bullying' tactics and threats by turning up to cut off your electric and now court writ for entry. I done al the correct paper work several days ago and called them today to ensure they had received my e mail and forms etc. The person you speak to is never actually able to help you - they always have to pass it to a colleague or another department - still no call back.
I will be turning up in court if it gets that far?
DO NOT EVER USE THIS COMPANY.

No follow up from Sales to resolve a fairly serious issue with my account being switched from one provider to SSE without any authority from me.
We are a business and I’m responsible…
We are a business and I’m responsible for operational matters and for around 4 days this year and around 2 days last year have been spent on the phone to SSE, last year on one of three accounts (we were up to date on the other 2) they threatened us with action, after numerous calls they admitted they had not generated any invoices to us and then we had to pay 10 months bills in one go.
6 months ago we left and joined another supplier, they said we were clear on all accounts and allowed the account to be taken over, today 6 months later they tell us we owe 5 months on an account they have already passed over and another 3 months on another, with two final invoices to come!!!
Absolutely terrible, time wasters, inaccurate bills etc…we always keep our meters readings up to date.
We just want to pay for the energy we use in time and be left to get on with running our business.
Timeline below started in September 2024 and is still ongoing today May 2025

Having spent 12-18 months and two Ombudsman reviews, we can finally say we are sorted with SSE. It has been an uphill struggle with useless customer operatives who cannot understand a kwh, an online system that cannot accept meter readings etc etc. But...today Sab picked up the phone and she was just great. If SSE had this calibre of operatives then they would not be rated so poorly, in my opinion. So well done Sab from the Coventry office.
Awful awful awful. Management couldn't care less and leave the donkey work up to a foreign call centre. They should be ashamed of themselves.
Awful awful awful. The management obviously don't care how the day to day operations are run. We unfortunately manage a few blocks of offices and flats with SSE as the electricity provider and I can't see strongly enough how bad they are. Over 2 years dealing with problems with invoices and readings since they changed the meter to a smart meter. 3 property manager have tried to make sense of the bills and now we are not getting bills because they don't like the stucture of the LOA we uploaded. Its the same one we upload every year for the last 4 years. This company is an absolute joke and the more people who switch their providers maybe we can get rid of SSE completely.

I have spent countless hours trying to contact this company and their billing system is terrible.
One invoice received was for £4000 plus for 1 month.
They have since credited this.
Finally and not easily I am out of their clutches.

Terrible customer service
Called to discuss a business bill and payment options on this. I was put on hold, then to be told the department that deals with this will not talk to me as the bill is based on an estimated read. They have installed a smart metre, yet I have to call and give them a read?! Then I was advised not to make any payment even though I have had messages and calls requesting this. I was told 'are you understanding me? we cannot discuss a payment plan unless you give a reading' so I said put me though and I will get a reading whilst I wait, but she would not do this. I asked for her name in case they decided to add charges to my account if I did not make any payment. She stated 'Abby' I asked what the second name to which she said 'I am under no obligation to disclose my second name to you'. I asked to be put through to her manager to which she said 'no I cannot put you through you need to call in again and the calls are recorded so they can listen to the call'. Absolute appalling customer service from Abby, she had an attitude from the moment she came on the call. To clarify I was advised not to make a payment for an estimated bill until a new bill is generated, therefore I am following this advice, given 15/5/25 at 1.25pm.

1 is too high but I don’t have the option for a 0 This company is just awful I have fought and battled for 2 years to resolve issues that weren’t mine to begin with! Debts left by previous tenants amounting to thousands now my problem. You can call and they don’t want to know they don’t listen, they talk over you while you try to explain, they aren’t interested in helping they just fob you off to another department. you can email and no one replies you can send recorded letters and no one acknowledges or replies. Debt collectors call regardless, officers come to check what I’m saying is true and no information is reported back. The stress and anxiety this company has caused me is Immeasurable. Avoid at all costs and please do not take on a lease where SSE have been the previous supplier as you will be chained to them forever
Untrained, incompetent call centre
Had a call wanting to ask me various questions about my energy supplier and I quickly told the caller that there had been family bereavement and that now wasn’t a good time. He then insisted and said that it wouldn’t take up too much of my time to which I hung up. If your staff can’t read the room and listen to what the customer is saying, there is not much hope for your company.
small business customer ripped off
small business customer, was contacted 9 months after switching suppliers and being forced into paying £££ more in supposed adjusted final bills, despite all their invoices showing estimated energy use which simply didn't add up, in my best estimation this is due to accounting errors on their part when they switched to a different type of invoice structure in 2023, complete and absolute con artists and to be avoided at all costs. eventually a lack of willing to continue fighting them led to us having to pay up so we can move on.

Would give negative stars if I could. Disruputable and dishonest company. Left SSE 6 months ago, went to EDF with a 3 year contract and now SSE have somehow taken the contract back. No signed contract. EDF says they have to pass back to SSE and SSE are refusing to allow us to leave. Dishonest and this sort of behaviour should be illegal. They also vastly overcharge. AVOID at all costs
