At the RSPCA, we’re proud to be there for every kind— from pets in need to wild animals who need urgent care. Every day, our dedicated teams work tirelessly to protect animals, prevent cruelty, and offer hope in situations that are often distressing and complex. As a charity, we face difficult decisions about how to use our limited resources, and we must prioritise the most urgent and serious cases of abuse or neglect. This sometimes means we can’t attend every call, no matter how much we wish we could. When we’re unable to be there in person, we’ll help in other ways—offering you support, directing you to organisations that can help fast, and, when it’s safe, empowering you to take an animal to a vet. These shared efforts truly make a difference. We’re incredibly grateful for the kindness, patience, and support shown by the public. Together, we can continue to speak up for animals, protect those in need, and build a better world for every kind.

ABSOLUTELY disgusting service.

A case was reported about a cat living in communal bins and after weeks of investigating (not sure what took them weeks), the answer was simply that they had “looked into this and the case is closed now”.

All the neighbours have now come together to do something about this because clearly, you don’t need to be part of a company, have a stamp on your jacket and benefit from donations to actually do something about an abandoned animal.

We eventually found out that the cat was not microchipped and was clearly abandoned, and we had to find someone to adopt him and actually deal with the situation ourselves.

I understand GDPR. I really do. But the fact that they couldn’t even tell us something as basic as whether the cat was microchipped is absolutely disgusting. We were the people on the ground, trying to help this animal, while apparently the case had been “looked into” and closed. Closed = do nothing.

This whole experience has been beyond frustrating. The neighbours have had to come together and do what we can because clearly we cannot rely on the RSPCA to deal with situations like this.

I know that England is in a much better position than many other countries when it comes to animal welfare, but we cannot really rely on a poor service like this to deal with the scale of animal neglect and abandonment.

And honestly, the argument should be bigger than simply criticising charities. We need more charities and more resources to deal with animal neglect and abandonment, but we also need to be pushing the government to put more money into animal welfare and the services dealing with these cases.

The RSPCA really needs to look into the way they work because, from our experience, it was extremely poor. An animal was left in a situation where a group of ordinary neighbours ultimately had to step in and sort things out ourselves.

Absolutely disgusting.

Hi Rocio,

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns, and for your dedication in seeking help for the cat. I’m truly sorry to hear that you feel let down. We understand how upsetting and frustrating it can be when you report something you’re worried about and feel that nothing has changed.

Please know that every report we receive matters to us. As a charity with limited resources, we have to prioritise the most urgent and severe cases of cruelty and neglect. The RSPCA takes all reports seriously, but every case is assessed carefully on its own merits. Our inspectors are trained to investigate concerns objectively, gather evidence, and prioritise animal welfare at every stage and there are times when we’re not able to take the action people hope for, even though our officers have carefully assessed the situation.

If you reported the cat to us and would like us to look into how your case was handled, please use our formal complaints process so we can review the specific details:

https://www.rspca.org.uk/utilities/contactus/complaints/form

Thank you again for your valuable feedback.

Best wishes,

I have contacted them several times over the past week and no visits have been made to 5 cats abandoned at home as the owners went on holiday 8 days ago. I feel the rspca are as bad as the owners for not attending to rescue these cats as they are standing against all the principals of the charity by not responding to this concern

Tried donating items, appaling attitude!

While I understand the RSPCA probably get an overwhelming number of people calling to donate items, the attitude of staff who handle those calls need to be checked in on. We called to donate a number of items following the recent passing of our family dog. It was only a few days since his passing of which was explained on the call and upon calling our local branch, the attitude was awful. You'd think that someone working (being paid at that!), for a organisation such as the RSPCA would show some compassion to someone who has just lost their dog, despite the inability to take any items at that time. Appaling for such a huge charitable brand and has tarnished the RSPCA for us going forward sadly.

Hi Carmen,

Thank you for your review. I’m incredibly sorry to hear about the passing of your beloved dog, we truly understand how difficult losing a pet can be and if you would like to seek further support, advice and helplines, you can find these resources on our website here:

https://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/pets/bereavement/coping

We really appreciate you thinking of the RSPCA when deciding where to take your donations and we’re deeply sorry your experience didn’t reflect the care and compassion you expected to receive.

Because RSPCA branches are independent charities from the National RSPCA which runs this page, we’re not able to look into their enquiries or complaints from the national office. Each branch manages its own complaints and enquiries, so we would encourage you to contact your local branch directly.

If you choose to email, adding “For the attention of the Branch Trustees” in the subject line can help your message reach the right people. You can find the best email address to contact them on by visiting this page of our website:

Abandoned CAT

RSPCA, absolutely disgraceful. I recently reported a cat that has been abandoned by my neighbours, wondering around on the street, looking very weak and unwell. A man from RSPCA turned up the following day who refused to take the cat as it was not in a critical condition.
Currently the cat is living on the street, fed by my self and other neighbours. No one dare to re home the cat as we all were told by RSPCA man that it would be a criminal offence.
I am disgusted by how RSPCA has left the cat on the street, helpless and abandoned but they have a cheek to advertise on TV every 10 minutes asking for donations.
I have have always been suspicious of these so called charities but now I know they are just another money scam cons.

Unlawful seizure of an innocent creature

On 23rd September 2026 a healthy baby squirrel was seized from its temporary carer,ILLEGALLY and without a warrant, by an officer from Leicestershire police. It was surrendered to RSPCA who euthanised the baby without any just reason. This is a barbaric and cruel act by not only the police but by an organisation who is supposed to protect all animals but does exactly the opposite. I have long believed that this organisation is at best not fit for purpose and stopped donating several years ago when this became apparent. As with many large organisations the money is creamed off at the top rendering it virtually useless.
FURTHER TO YOUR REPLY:Unfortunately you are completely missing the issue here and do not seem to know the law.The carer is legally allowed to keep the squirrel for a period of six weeks and was indeed well within that six week period when it was forcefully removed and unecessarily and cruelly euthanised by you. In addition to this, the policeman had no right of entry into the house without a warrant and bullied his way in by threatening the carer.
The Rspca portray themselves as a caring organisation who supposedly protect all animals. Quite clearly this is not the case as the above atrocity clearly proves.I will continue to make as many people aware as I can of the disingenuous way in which you operate.

Hi Lynne

The RSPCA was asked by the police to attend an address to assist with a grey squirrel being held in captivity.

As a charity, we're unable to discuss complaints about specific individuals or any action that may have been taken due to data protection regulations. However, we can say the following.

Specifically, in England, grey squirrels are listed as an Invasive Alien Species under the Invasive Species (Enforcement and Permitting) Order 2019.

So under current law, grey squirrels are classified as an invasive species which means they cannot be released back into the wild. Although the RSPCA actively lobbied against this legislation, we and other wildlife rehabilitators must strictly abide by it.

Because of these legal restrictions, we can no longer rehabilitate and release grey squirrels, even if they have been treated for injuries. The challenges of this legislation is something we will continue to discuss as part of our advocacy work, and the RSPCA cares passionately about the welfare of all wild animals - including grey and red squirrels.

DISGUSTING ATTITUDE

A totally disgusting attitude by one of your members when it was reported that a person who breeds dogs from home does nothing when one of the dogs starts to savage and eat one of the puppies, This has been reported by other people and yet you do absolutely NOTHING, yet you have the audacity to advertise on TV that you are a caring Company and want Money off us.

RSPCA refused to help.

I saw a sheep with a broken leg in Cumbria. I emailed Westmoreland RSPCA who advised they would send an inspector over.
Several days later I received an email from the RSPCA National Control Centre to advise that they would not help and that I must contact APHA.
Really disappointing; someone says they will help, someone else says they won't.
Meanwhile, a poor animal is in pain and distress.
Not impressed.

Hi Freddie,

Thank you for your review. We truly appreciate how frustrating it must be to receive contradictory information when you are worried about an animal in distress.

It may be helpful for us to explain that RSPCA Westmorland Branch is an independent, separately registered charity from the national RSPCA which runs this page. RSPCA branches are unable to assign an Inspectorate officer to attend an incident, this is because it is the ‘national society’ which employs officers to cases of cruelty, neglect and abandonment. . When people are concerned for an animal, reports can be made directly to us on this page of our website: https://www.rspca.org.uk/reportaconcern

The RSPCA is limited by law and in this case sadly unable to intervene. The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is responsible for safeguarding the welfare of animals on commercial farms. Please visit this page of our website for more information about how to report your concerns for the sheep to them:

https://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/farm/worriedaboutafarmanimal

Thank you again for raising your concerns, and for caring about the welfare of the sheep.

Hi Maureen,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your frustration after reporting the cats and kittens you are concerned about.

Caring for animals across England and Wales is a huge undertaking, and advertising plays an important role in making that care possible. The vast majority of every pound donated — 81p — goes directly to rescuing, treating, and rehoming vulnerable animals. Last year alone, thanks to our generous supporters, we helped tens of thousands of animals in need.

Around 18p in every pound is invested in fundraising, including advertising. This funding is essential: without it, we simply couldn’t reach the animals who rely on us or sustain the frontline work our teams carry out every day.

If you'd like to see exactly how donations are used, our annual report is available here: https://www.rspca.org.uk/whatwedo/latest/publications/reports

Compassionate and dedicated

I've been consistently impressed by the work the RSPCA does across the UK. From rescuing animals in distress to running long-term rehoming programmes and campaigning for stronger animal welfare laws, they clearly put compassion into action every day. Their staff and volunteers are dedicated, knowledgeable, and clearly care deeply about the animals they help. It's reassuring to know an organisation like this exists to speak up for creatures who can't speak for themselves. Highly recommend supporting their work if you care about animal welfare.

Great for microvolunteering

I can't speak for their phone lines or response to animal cruelty, which seems like most of the negative reviews. There is unfortunately a lot of animal cruelty in this country and they can only do so much. With microvolunteering, it's great for tasking and has a range of things to get involved in, really good initiative.

Honestly, such a pity....

Called them to report animal neglect and they would not investigate, as they said they had a limited number of volunteers available.

Twice, I called them about injured wildlife on the road and they told me to catch the injured animal myself and bring it to a vet. So, without the substantial funding or workforce of a whole organisation, ALONE and with only a cardboard box, I did chase the injured wildlife for hours, catch it and bring it to a vet...

Honestly, I don't see the point in calling them if excuses and pity-me stories are all they provide.

Please don't reply to my review with some fake, hypocritical response. I believe in actions, not words... and, based on my own experiences and the other reviews on here, I can see what appears to be a pattern of justifying inadequate responses while vulnerable animals are left in despicable conditions.

Such a pity...

Useless.

Just shocking. Reported a neighbour who has had nine or ten dogs in about three or four years. Is seen kicking the dogs regularly, then they mostly just dissappear. Recently he's had three British Bulldogs, the first disappeared after a few weeks. One died two weeks ago of 'liver disease'. The last one died yesterday because it 'caught liver disease from the first'??? The dogs are not chipped. He has acquired a brindle XL Bully puppy now, around two weeks ago. The last XL Bully escaped after killing his two Frenchies, armed police responded and he was rounded up and disappeared by the owner.
So at best; he is physically abusive. Neglects to get them chipped, medical care and registered. (You can't get XL dogs anymore, it's illegal.) At worst he is a prolific animal hoarder and abuser, who kills them when there is a problem or he's bored.
RSPCA:
Didn't listen.
Said there wasn't enough evidence to investigate.
When I said don't you investigate to uncover evidence? She said no? Apparently that's not how it works? When I pointed out a visit to ask him where the dogs are and which vets they were taken to would uncover lies. Much like the 'catching of liver disease' nonsense. I was again told that's not how they work.
I would say they would only come out in extreme circumstances where there's an open and shut case. Where they would undoubtedly be too late. Perhaps one they could highlight and fundraiser off?

No help at all, uncaring, annoying, a day late and a dollar short. I will never donate to them again.

We truly appreciate you monitoring the situation and reporting this to us and we’re deeply sorry your experience didn’t reflect the care and compassion you expected. Every animal matters to us, and we’re working hard to improve how we communicate our limitations as a charity with limited resources.

We take all service complaints seriously. If you would like us to listen to your calls to look into how they were handled, please use our formal complaints process so we can review the specific details:

Thank you again for your valuable feedback.
Best wishes,

Amazing for microvolunteering

A really nice organisation - volunteering with them is an amazing experience. The only critical feedback I have is that I wish their call line was a bit more informative. Me and my friend found an injured pigeon and weren't able to get any essential advice from the RSPCA help centre.

Hi Elisha,

Thank you so much for your lovely review and for volunteering with us. The RSPCA is incredibly grateful for all of our dedicated volunteers who offer their time and support to help us create a kinder world for all animals.

Thank you also for trying to help the injured pigeon you found and for leaving your feedback about your experience contacting us. We’re so sorry you did not find your call helpful.

We truly understand how distressing it is to see an animal in need. In order to help as many animals as possible we will always ask people to take action to help small sick or injured wild animals themselves if they can by safely transporting them to a vet, rather than waiting for the RSPCA. That’s because it’s the quickest way for thousands of wild animals to get the urgent help they need. Every time a kind member of the public helps a wild animal, it frees up our specialist rescuers to reach animals suffering from cruelty and neglect.

You can find further information on our website advising how to help a sick or injured bird, including how to contain them. We hope that you find this useful:

Thank you again for your valuable feedback.

Best wishes,
Emma
