Lovely grounds and lake:
WARNING.
Very poorly signposted paths. Easy to get lost.
Make sure that you collect a map on entry and take a compass with you.
Only half a mile walk to the Bluebell Railway.

Membership is key to fulfilling our charitable purpose. A large proportion of our income is from membership, and without our members we wouldn’t be able to fund our critical conservation work or keep special places open for everyone to enjoy.
We review our pricing regularly to make sure that we can balance being able to look after the nation’s historic places, green spaces and collections to the high standards they deserve, with providing high quality days out for visitors.
While we’re conscious of the various pressures on people’s finances, we believe that the new prices still represent fantastic value for money.
Membership gives free entry to more than 500 places in our care, free parking at most of our car parks, our handbook, full of information about the places we look after, our magazine three times a year, packed with inspiration, interviews and news – also available digitally and access to our online Members' area, full of first look previews and behind-the-scenes features.

Sutton Hoo and Melford Hall
I'm a frequent visitor to Sutton Hoo and enjoy the exhibition and the grounds and the special events. My partner and I visited Melford Hall yesterday, which prompted this review. Friendly greetings from the staff and great service in the Cafe. I particularly appreciate the vegan scones and food options which has been denounced by the right wing. How very pathetic they made such a fuss over your lovely scones. The signage is so discreet, millions must have been enjoyed by omnivores who had no idea they had a vegan item on their tea tray. Also, the toilet arrangements are very sensible but seem to have upset some. The people, men and women, waiting to use the toilets all considered the upset to be very foolish. Thanks for a sensible approach, NT.
One small caveat. It would be nice to be able to take my grandchildren into the grounds as non paying guests. English heritage allow members to take in children for free and I think this would be a good thing for the NT to copy

Children under 5 can visit for free but we can’t allow free entry for over 5’s with our memberships. We have to keep to HMRC rules surrounding Gift Aid when considering the level of benefit afforded to memberships – a guest function would be considered as a donation to the recipient and make the membership exempt from claims. Gift Aid provides considerable additional funds to support our cause and we couldn’t do what we do without it. I hope this is a useful explanation.

You clearly state in your membership prices, that 18 to 25 year olds are classed as juniors, but you contradict yourself in your reply to me in saying that all adults are charged an entry fee of £25.
So please clarify, is an 18 to 25 year old a junior or an adult. As I said previously, NT, thus is the way we do it if you don't like it don't come.
Your robbing the public, the way I see it the public own the NT, we fund the NT.

We don't have an equivalent rate for single entry. Therefore, anyone aged 18+ is charged the adult rate.

The decay of Clandon House
It is now 10 years since the tragic fire at Clandon Park House. The property remains encased in scaffolding and apart from removing all the debris nothing has been done in that time. The National Trust seems incapable of making a decision as to what to do with the property. As custodians of so much of our history they have a duty to restore the house to its former glory or is that too much for an organisation that questions so much of our proud history and global influence. It is a disgrace. It took the French only five years to restore the Notre Dame to its former glory!

Initially we’d hoped partial internal restoration of Clandon would be possible after the fire and investigated this over several years. However, we realised that, given the scale of the damage, we'd essentially be creating replica spaces, rather than achieving genuine restoration. Simultaneously, the more we cared for Clandon post-fire, the more we realised how unique the building is in its fire-damaged state. It reveals the story of how such great country houses are made and gives people an opportunity to have a completely new experience, which complements their experience of other historic houses.
As we’ve been creating our plans for Clandon, we’ve consulted with over 75,000 people along with a huge number of multi-disciplinary experts from backgrounds like heritage, conservation, engineering, access, sustainability, and design. We’ve arranged a series of open days and focus groups for our local members, non-members and supporters, and held a series of public exhibitions in Guildford and West Clandon where we shared our plans. We’ve also consulted extensively with the key statutory bodies responsible for historic buildings and heritage management. These include Historic England, Guildford Borough Council and statutory and amenity groups. We value their constructive and thoughtful input and will continue active dialogues with all these organisations as the project progresses.
The feedback and responses from all these visitors, including over 1000 members of the local community, have informed our approach. Making Clandon a useful and special place for our local community and a resource for heritage skills is central to our approach. Public feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, the detail of which is outlined in the Statement of Community Involvement document submitted as part of the planning application process, available on Guildford Borough Council’s website. Through these consultations, research and feedback, we believe our plans for Clandon are the best way forward for the house and provide the best experience for our members and supporters. Our vision is for a house that showcases the importance and beauty of what survived the fire – and celebrates the stories of the many people who made and crafted it over centuries. Our approach combines careful conservation, scholarly restoration and sensitive contemporary design. Public feedback has been incredibly positive, recognising that our plans respect Clandon’s past and will create an exciting new chapter in its history. We’re confident we’ve produced the best plans for Clandon’s future.

WARNING...EXTRA COST FOR TAKEAWAY CUPS
went for a visit with the dog to killerton near Exeter..the dog enjoyed it, but the cafe in the main house did not allow dogs in cafe or patio areas,so I ordered some food and coffee for takeaway and was told the takeaway cups were extra cost on top, this is disgusting...I did ask for a cup and saucer, but was refused as these could be broken, so I had no choice but to purchase cups to get a hot drink.i feel as though you are penalised for having a dog, however the national trust has now started allowing dogs which is good, but I don't expect to be ripped off by paying extra cost for takeaway cups...I won't be spending my money in this cafe again...I am also a regular national trust member, this will make me reconsider renewing my membership...

I’m sorry your visit to Killerton was impacted because they don’t let dogs in the café. We give all of our places a ‘pawprint’ rating on our website, indicating how dog friendly they are. We rate Killerton as 2 pawprints – dogs are allowed everywhere outside as long as they’re on a lead, but as you’ve found we restrict access to the main café and the house. We do allow dogs in the Stables Coffee Shop which is a short walk from the main café. Your feedback about the use of coffee cups is helpful as we move towards phasing out single use cups by the end of 2026. Some of our places do have returnable mugs that you can borrow and return when you’re done, but not all of our places can offer this so we recommend that you bring your own.

Joined as a member…but rather outraged at the discrimination now shown towards indigenous British people regarding pricing……. £2 for asylum/ refugee v £25 for the rest of us. NT appears to have surrendered to the Woke brigade. I have not renewed my membership as I feel this is blatant discrimination…typical left wing anti British organisation….whoever is running the show must be related to the current government who appear to be destroying everything British…especially our history and countryside. 😡

This review is solely for killerton woods part of killerton house Devon.
First walk in Killerton woods for a long time, we went to see the bluebells. These woods I have played in, gone on training runs and now at 75 have been walking for over 63 years. What a disaster. the National Trust has decimated. Where there were carpets of bluebells there is only a few trying to push through the stinging nettles and brambles. The sides of the walks, where there were rhododendrons is now 3/6 ft high in brambles. Shame on the National Trust and whoever ordered the culling of the rhododendrons saying they were not a native species. Native or not they aided the growth of all the wild flowers, keeping brambles and stinging nettles down and also added to the colour and beauty themselves. What we have left now is a mess of what was beautiful walks overtaken by brambles and nettles not allowing anything else to grow.

Columjohn and Park woods at Killerton were actively managed for the first time in 40 years during 2021/2022. This involved thinning out the mixture of trees to allow light into woods and to encourage the remaining trees to put on more growth. The additional light will favour nettles and bramble for a few years before the shade levels increase again. We have seen a reduction in extent of bluebells as a result but an increase in other flowering plants and understorey - wild garlic and red campion are more prolific. We have also seen pied fly catchers return to the woods after a long absence.
During this period, we also removed 5 hectares of rhododendron that was having a detrimental impact on the ancient woodland, ground flora and natural regeneration of young trees. This was with support from both Forestry Commission and Woodland Trust.
I’m sorry you’re disappointed with how the woods appear at the moment, but hope we can assure you this is a stage in the long life of the woodlands and the full mix of ground flora will return in time. We’ll continue maintaining all tracks and keeping paths clear of vegetation during this period of extra plant growth.

Attended Kingston Lacy today with my family, the lady letting people into the house was downright rude and the gentleman at the house exit was little better. £22 pp to be treated poorly is unacceptable, put a real dampener on the day.

NT lost membership card
I need to provide feedback on behalf of my daughter & her family's experience attending Greys Court NT location today, Easter Sunday.
They have a lot of stress in their lives & this was supposed to be a day out to alleviate some of this pressures of life.
They couldn't locate the NT membership card. They hunted high & low with toddler in tow who is going through regression, so nerves were frayed due to lack of sleep.
My question is, surely their membership could have be found on NT records just by going a search on their names to confirm they were paid up members?
The NT card is made of paper so looks just like any unassuming business card, nothing stand out, so easily lost amongst a chaotic young household.
On arrival at the venue, they found they didn't even need their card if only visiting the grounds & not the house...
Th NT website was not clear on this information & the day was almost a completely ruined experience.
They had no facility to PRINT anything to replace the missing card.
NT improve your website & get with the 2025 programme...use QR codes or the such so people can still enjoy the locations minus their physical membership cards. They can just show membership evidence on their phones?
It's disappointing..we always spend a small fortune when in the cafes & gift shops, so surely you could accommodate this simple ask that can help others?

I'm really sorry to hear about the difficulties your family had.
Our properties can look up members when membership cards are forgotten. It just makes it a faster, smoother process to have the cards ready when entering, particularly during busy periods like Easter. I'm sorry if this wasn't clear.
Our Supporter Service Centre can provide temporary cards by email if cards are lost. These can be presented at properties on a smartphone if necessary. Fully digital membership cards are something we're working hard on and hope to have them in place by the end of this year.
I'll also pass on your feedback about Greys Court and will investigate whether we can improve our messaging.

Exist purely to rip people off
Tried to visit Shugborough today, after years and years of going there. Merely wanted to park and walk along the PUBLIC footpath, only to be told by a couple of patronising and rude volunteers that we'd have to pay twenty five pounds, to park in a field?! I've parked in London for less.
Their short sighted greed has ensured I won't be visiting or giving them another penny.
Their sole purpose seems to be to extract money from people under the guise of "preserving our heritage"

Visit to Gawthorpe Hall
We packed a picnic (as there is
No cafe) and drove for over an hour to get here . We planned a walk around the estate with our dog and a visit to the walled Garden and partarre.
Although advertised as open the hall was closed (April 11th) as were the toilets. Also the walled garden is not accessible any more. There are signs which state
residents only.’
The partarre garden is densely overgrown and litter is strewn around. In general the woodland area is poorly managed with one main path totally blocked. A very disappointing visit on a beautiful sunny day. If you are interested in horticulture and a country walk then this is a place to be avoided. Come on National Trust you can do better than this. The place is letting you down. The Shuttleworth family must be turning in their graves at the state of their once beautiful property.

Paying for parking at Compton Bay
Paying for parking at Compton Bay, Isle of Wight. A total nightmare. If you don’t have phone signal you’re stuffed. And when I managed to get enough signal to call the number on the notice board I was told I couldn’t pay via phone because my mobile number wasn’t registered but I couldn’t register it because I didn’t have any signal! Whatever happened to machine that accept coins and cards?
Two other people left complaining because they couldn’t pay for parking either.
Not good for the National Trust or the Isle of Wight ☹️

Hidden Charges.
First of all, I really like Hardwick Hall estate. I walk through there all the time and the staff are awesome.
The refreshment area is great too. Nice clean, secure and well serviced spot that you can sit and waste an afternoon in.
Now the bad. It is totally ok to charge £6 for parking, so long as I know there is a charge. It is utterly ridiculous to park up and walk into the refreshment area to be stopped by a couple of nice gentlemen and asked to pay per occupant of the car. There is no signage anywhere in the car park to tell you this is expected and also no signs I could see that the whole place shuts at 16.30. I winced at the £12 for three ice creams but that is expected, the car parking charge was not.
I think I will enjoy my expensive ice creams from somewhere else.

Tell me where is this signage? I have walked through the car park and refreshment area over 150 times, not once have I seen a sign for £6 parking. To repeat myself, the car parking charge is fine. What is not fine is hiding the fact it is to be paid.

I think that the National trust do a exceptional job under such stressful circumstances.
They can't get everything right, but on the whole they are getting most things that matter right.
Just a shame that 2 volunteers at Arlington court in North Devon were not as friendly as the majority we have come across over the years.
