Polite service, but not proactive enough
I have dealt with Heath Crawford for several years. Communication has always been polite, and they have provided quotations from alternative insurers.
However, as I prefer to remain with Bupa, I have repeatedly had to initiate the process of obtaining Bupa’s available renewal discount. On one occasion, I was told to contact Bupa myself and secured a free month. At another renewal, Heath Crawford obtained the free month only after I asked them to approach Bupa and then chased for an answer.
This year, I again contacted Bupa myself and secured the maximum available discount—8.33%, reducing my premium from £284.40 to £260.71 per month without changing the policy or cover. Heath Crawford subsequently confirmed that this was the maximum discount and said they had intended to contact Bupa the following week.
Heath Crawford has confirmed that it receives 7% commission from Bupa, excluding Insurance Premium Tax. While I recognise that it also offers market reviews and assistance during the policy year, I would expect a broker receiving commission to negotiate proactively with the existing insurer and present the best available renewal terms from the outset.

Thank you for your detailed feedback and for acknowledging the support and market reviews we have provided over the years.
We completely understand your expectation that, as your broker, we should seek the best terms available from your existing insurer as part of the renewal process. That is something we routinely do where appropriate.
We would, however, like to clarify the timing of this year's renewal. Your Bupa policy does not renew until 2 October, and you contacted Bupa directly and secured the 8.33% discount before we had reached the point in our renewal process when we planned to approach Bupa on your behalf. When we subsequently spoke, we confirmed that you had successfully obtained the maximum discount currently available.
We appreciate that, from your perspective, you would prefer us to approach Bupa earlier so that the best available Bupa terms are presented to you without you having to initiate that conversation yourself. That's useful feedback and something we will take on board.
Our role as your broker extends beyond negotiating a renewal discount with your existing insurer. We also review the wider market, compare alternative options and provide ongoing assistance with your policy throughout the year. However, we recognise that proactively negotiating with your existing insurer is an important part of the renewal service too.
