All good except the bill.
Four of us ate at The Dore. Food was lovely and staff were great. Only reason we give two stars is that we were overcharged by at least £25. I suppose we have to take some blame as we didn’t think about it at the time but maybe it just shouldn’t have happened. Also, chicken must have been the world’s smallest chicken.
…Never again!
Only given this 2 stars because the waiting staff were so nice, otherwise it would be 0!
We were taken to Ego at the Punchbowl near Liverpool for a family meal. The chicken & chorizo paellas were really greasy so we sent them back and reordered Spaghetti Carbonara. They came with NO cream sauce but covered in oil. Those were sent back too. The waiting staff were very apologetic and suggested that there was a trainee chef on tonight- but which sensible establishment has a trainee chef making the meals on a Saturday night!!!
The ladies of the group were offered free desserts but we declined thinking that we couldn't bear the thought of a "greasy" pudding!
unpleasant experience of Staff
I am writing to formally express my profound disappointment and dissatisfaction with the service my sister and I received at your Ego restaurant, Stanney Oaks, on May 27, 2025, at approximately 19:30.
Upon arrival, we inquired about a table for dinner. The gentleman acting as front of house, whom I presume to be the manager, informed us that there was a "limited menu" available, which we confirmed was acceptable to us. However, when we subsequently approached a lady at the bar to order, she asked the manager and he contradicted himself, stating that the kitchen was, in fact, closed.
Despite this confusion, we proceeded to order drinks and found a seat. While enjoying our beverages, a group of two ladies arrived and were given the same initial information about a "limited menu." Crucially, unlike us, they were then offered a menu to peruse.
Perplexed by this discrepancy, I approached the bar for a second round of drinks and directly asked the manager if the kitchen was now open. He confirmed it was not. I then politely inquired how it was possible for the three ladies to be served if the kitchen was closed, regardless of a limited menu.
At this point, the manager's demeanour became highly unprofessional. He responded in a raised voice, stating that "they are regulars and had booked a table." Even though when the ladies arrived, they asked if there was a table available? I then asked, "Do you treat new customers differently to your regulars?" He proceeded to shout across the room, from the Front of house where he was standing, over to the bar where I was standing, "IS THAT OK WITH YOU," despite my immediate verbal confirmation that it was "fine." He continued to shout "IS THAT OK" a total of three times, even after I had already acknowledged his explanation.
Following this deeply uncomfortable exchange, as I returned to my table with our drinks, I clearly overheard the manager instructing his staff, "do not serve them again."
This entire incident is utterly unacceptable. The contradictory information, the preferential treatment shown to other customers, the manager's aggressive and confrontational tone, and the subsequent instruction to refuse us further service demonstrate a severe lack of professionalism and customer care. Such behaviour is not only rude but also discriminatory and has left us feeling extremely unwelcome and disrespected.
Great meal tonight.
Visited Ego Ackworth for my birthday tonight and it was fabulous. Great service and attention from all the staff. Excellent food (as always).
EXCELLENT DINING EXPERIENCE
As a family of 4 we visited the ego again and again we were really happy with the experience food was really nice and good quality.
It was a fairly quiet wednesday but the staff were all friendly and made our evening enjoyable we always like the atmosphere relaxed friendly and comfortable.
We always take advantage of midweek offers as we still feel the normal prices are a little over the top.
we will be back and hope they appreciate regular customers like us and keep the offers flowing £30 for 2 courses for 2 people is tremendous value.
manager Megan knows how to welcome and put diners at ease with her pleasant and genuine friendly personality.
i am boring and always order the mixed paella which is the best ever mussels chicken prawns and chorizo try it and see.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Wonderful Evening at The Punchbowl – Sefton
We had such a lovely meal at The Punchbowl tonight — absolutely worth a shout-out! Between us, we had two fish dishes and one chicken, and every single plate was delightful. Beautifully cooked, full of flavour, and presented with real care.
The staff were just as impressive — so helpful, friendly, and genuinely accommodating. Nothing was too much trouble, and it made the whole experience even more enjoyable.
A relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, fantastic food, and service with a smile — we’ll definitely be back! Highly recommended. 👏🍽️
I have been to Ego in Kenilwoth today
I have been to Ego in Kenilwoth today. We did wait to over hour for a carbonara and chicken & tomato sauce pasta. After waiting that long the food arrived. It was terrible, the pasta was over cooked. The tomate sauce pasta was dried not sauce on it, it seemed to be left in the oven for hours before they brought it out. I did point it out, they took the pasta back into the kitchen and washed the sauce out of the pasta and mixed it with cold tomato sauce from the jar. Terrible experience. The restaurant was not busy for any excuse of this poor quality of food.
Deteriorated in the last 2 years
We have been to the Ego Bromsgrove many times since they first opened, and they used to be outstanding- excellent food and the staff were second to none. A waitress once got Chef to make me a sample of something to try for free, before I ordered the full meal, to see if I liked it. Sadly since they were bought by Mitchell & Butlers they have really gone downhill - especially regarding the staff. On Boxing Day the food was ok but the service very, very slow - a party of about 12 threatened to walk out, as after nearly 90 minutes they still hadn't had their main courses. We (two of us) also had very slow service that day, and after waiting 25 minutes after our desserts for two teas, we decided to forget the drinks and paid for what we had already had and left. I thought perhaps it was because they were very busy as it was Christmas, but this week was even worse. The woman who took us to our table asked if we wanted water ("Yes please") and as she walked away mumbled over her shoulder "We're out of rib eye and mumble mumble %*&$***&$?" The young lady who actually served us was very helpful, and asked again if we wanted water "We already asked the previous lady".
10 minutes later we gave our food orders, and asked the young woman again for water, as it had never arrived. She apologised and got us some.
The food was ok, but the portions much smaller than previously, and my "Chicken Supreme" was mostly beans and tomatoes, with two tiny bits of chicken, and none of the Toulouse Sausages shown in the menu as part of the dish. We then ordered two desserts, together with one latte and one tea. The desserts came and were fine, but still no sign of the hot drinks. After waiting another fifteen minutes we decided to leave. As no staff were in sight, we went to a till, where a different young woman rang-up our table, and tried to charge us for (non-existent) hot drinks. My husband pointed out we never got them, and asked her to take them off the bill. She replied "I can't do that - it has to be manager" PLEASE NOTE - No apology! Then she just stood and stared at us without moving. Perhaps she expected us just to pay?? After a few seconds of no activity, my husband said "Well, could you go and do that now?" whereupon she got very aggressive and defensive and said "Don't you be rude to me!!"
I said "We're not being rude, we're just asking that you get a manager" "Don't you be rude to me!!"
We have both worked with the public for decades, in shops, bars, customer services, betting offices and weddings, and we don't shout, raise our voices, and never swear - we just asked her politely to get a manager to sort our bill out.
She eventually left (presumably to complain about us) and came back with..... the mumbling woman who never got our water! She was the Manager! She never apologised, either for the missing drinks, or her terrible staff, but deliberately turned her back on us while she altered the bill, ignored us, and then gave us the bill. We left, and won't be back.
The young woman at the till is either very badly trained, or in the wrong job. To turn on a customer and be rude to them when they have politely raised a genuine complaint, is entirely wrong, and if we had been different people could have resulted in a
stand-up row. The customer is not always right, but there are specific ways of dealing with complaints, and she clearly hasn't a clue, but then with a manager as rude and uninterested as this one, it's not surprising.
Well done- you have ruined an exceptional business.

Couldn’t get on internet to show 3 course birthday meal offer. Waitress said she’d send someone to help. After 30 mins went to find her. Found a lovely young man who helped…but couldn’t get on internet…sorted it another way.
Ordered free birthday meal and a main course for companion. Told offer was only if companion had 3 courses as well…no sharing! We were going to share starter and pudding.
On hour gone already…
Reordered. Took about 40 more mins for starters to arrive.
Lovely food!
Mains arrived..also lovely.
Had coffee and companion had to rush off..after 2 hours…to make hospital appt.
Paid..not given itemised bill..just total. With tip ..£50 for friends’ starter and main, 2 teas whilst waiting, 2 coffees at end.
Manager never came near us despite seeing our struggles with internet , bill etc. lovely friendly staff and happy atmosphere missing totally, that we had enjoyed under Daniel and previous staff.
Very disappointing. 3rd dispiriting visit in a row, slow service, unfriendly staff, offers far more complicated than emails suggest.
Will go elsewhere in future.

Dreadful experience finishing with inedible steak
Have visited Ego many times and really enjoyed great service and food.
However, Sunday night was a disaster at the Penhow restaurant.
My husband and I brought my son and his partner. We arrived at 6.30 looking forward to one of the “all day Sunday roasts”
When we arrived we were told lamb roast and pork roast weren’t available
We sat, ordered drinks then when we came to order, were told beef was not available either, on checking with restaurant, server said no Sunday roast available and that they often sell out by then
Why not stock accordingly?
Irritating as that was we decided to order from the normal menu, only to be told that our first three choices from there weren’t available either, nor were the two sides we wanted
By this time it was getting late, so we ordered a rump steak that was available (no sirloin or ribeye).
Steaks were inedible- quite literally. Not possible to cut mine with a steak knife, and the server said she couldn’t promise another would be any better
My husband and son didn’t have as much gristle but found them impossible to chew and had to spit them out. All v unpleasant
They refunded the cost of the steaks (but no concessions for the inconvenience) and we went home hungry having still paid £90ish for the drinks and starters
Staff were disinterested- maybe having spent their shifts dealing with disappointment
What's gone so wrong?
We have been visiting Ego Kenilworth for 9 years. We were always pleased with our dining experience.
I'm not sure what's gone wrong.
Three times in a row we have had to complain. First complaint, my breaded chicken was burnt black underneath. Second complaint, my husband steak was dreadful, They took it away, by the time, his meal returned, I had eaten my meal, so a pointless couples dine out together. Then my husband went with his daughter and he had to return his risotto as it was one mass of gluey glup. So very sad, as the waiting staff remain ever friendly .Such a shame as we always use to enjoy our meals there.
Restaurant unable to cope with numbers
A group of friends went to Ego Bromsgrove last night. Staff were completely overwhelmed by the numbers and we had to wait a ridiculously long time for our main courses. Ego cleary isn't managing effectively the extra demand generated by their current discount offer. Food wasn't bad at all and staff were doing everything they could. And the manager reduced the bill which we appreciated. But I couldn't recommend this place unless people are ok with main course arriving nearly 2 hours after time of original table booking!
Nuneaton Ego do you proud
Nuneaton Ego do you proud! 14 of us booked in for a meal on saturday 04 January 2025, friendly service, everything came quickly, piping hot delicious food, could not fault it , excellent service , will be back
Slow Service
Hello,
To be perfectly honest i was really disappointed, this is the second time i have visited Ego at Shrewsbury and on the first occasion it was the same problem. The problem is that the overall service is very poor.Last evening (11/01/25) i booked a table at 6.0pm for 8 people to celebrate my son's birthday. The initial greeting was fine being shown to the table and with the appropiate menu and wine list etc, with the drinks order being take immediately and within 5 minutes the drinks were delivered. No problem. Not long after the waitress came backand took our meal order, this would be about 10 minutes past 6.0pm again no problem. What happened next is that we had to wait until 7.25pm before the meals arrived which i find is totally unacceptable and just bad organisation. If it wasn't for me speaking to the manager about the situation i feel we would have waited longer. She did apologise but in my view it just spoils the evening having to complain in the first place. What was really annoying is that people who came in after us got their meals first. Not what you want to see happening on the table next to yours.Having said that, the food when it did arrive was overall quite good and well presented and what we ordered.
Finally just to say that i have visited a number of Ego Restuarants mainly in West Yorkshire over the last couple of years and that there does seem to be a problem with poor service in general and i can only surmise that this is down to poor training for the front of house staff.
When i go out for a meal with family and friends i just want to enjoy the atmosphere and the conversation and if i have to complain it spoils the evening completely. If i decide to go out again which we often do i will be reluctant to book a table at Ego's in the future.
Superb Evening - Huge shout out to this restaurant and its' staff
We were part of a group celebrating a 40th Birthday on 11th January, a very busy Saturday night at this Cannock restaurant. My daughter had made the booking for her husband as a surprise having been let down by another restaurant. The staff were so accommodating even from the initial booking. We were warmly greeted as soon as we entered the restaurant. The food was served without any delays meaning we were all eating together, no waiting around. The food was absolutely delicious and everyone commented on how lovely their meals were. The service was impeccable, nothing was too much trouble and a special mention to Stephanie who was so kept smiling throughout. I could not fault one single aspect of the evening. The whole experience was absolutely superb, you all definitely deserve a big shout out for making our night so special.
Slow service even with preorders. Poor portion size.
Things did not start well for our visit to the Wellington in Leeds. On booking for a party of 10 we were told because it was so busy we had to pre-order and we were sent a link. The website is possibly one of the most difficult to follow I've ever known and we ended up having to phone the restaurant. We then told they were too busy and that we place our order by email.
Having done that we arrived on time and despite them knowing what we were eating, it was almost 45 minutes before we were served the food. There was then a ridiculous wait for the main courses and very limited attention for drinks, et cetera.
This was for Sunday dinner and the portions were particularly small with a large Yorkshire pudding obscuring everything. Three of us had the trio of roasts and wished we'd not bothered as there was hardly any meat at all.
Having sat down just before 1 pm it was almost 345 before we were able to leave and my biggest annoyance, they added the service charge of 10%. When will restaurants learn? This should be optional? We are not America and it's bloody annoying.

We pre booked for 16 people weeks in advance for boxing day dinner for 5pm turned up and staff at first attentive for drinks , we had some of our party order starters about half hour then after that nothing for another hour everyone complaining of long wait then when it came most veg all under cooked as we have a retired cook on our table not given option on veg as my wife can't have skins everything had skins our mash wad full of half mashed spuds so in a nutshell slow service under average food and overpriced we did have complimentary drin

I booked online earlier tonight for 5 people for a birthday meal. The original time was not available so I changed the time. Turns out the website defaulted to book for 2 people instead of 5, so they could not fit us in, but I didn't notice the change (who would?) . Nowhere else available locally at short notice. Thanks for ruining my birthday event Ego. Hope you go bust very very very soon. You absolute a-holes
