I booked the DAW School course and am…
I booked the DAW School course and am truly impressed by the wealth of valuable information and very helpful tips. The learning content is presented in a very lively way using examples, and you're not just there, but right in the middle of the action. The learning approach is brilliantly thought-out and very well structured. I fully recommend it!
I’m working on the cubase course
I’m working on the cubase course. This is a great overview course. This is good to get an idea of what i can do. I found it too much information too fast.
I think if they broke this course into two courses 1 midi and 2 audio and went slower and verbally explaining every command and click starting from an empty page. How to customize then how to save a project and how to save a copy file. File Management is crucial
The course was thorough and well…
The course was thorough and well designed to learn all the material presented.
Great courses
Great courses, lots of good material and the interactive nature of the courses is an additional bonus.
I'm a total beginner
I'm a total beginner. Seriously. The course gave me a really good introduction. Now I can experiment with my own library, make some stuff and make progress!
All I have to do is watch a video, search for more info, make some stuff and repeat.
Not an easy task, but the course is a real gem.
Not just great courses; they are delightful, too.
ThinkSpace courses truly enable a person to learn what the courses promise to teach.
If there's a definition for "engaging" and "effective", you could easily use any section of a THinkSpace course as an example, in no small part because of HOW these courses are designed with real people in mind - people who are interested in learning, who may have a range of levels of expertise, but who want to build the new skill that the course models.
And of course if you've watched the youtube channel, you know the real driver of the approach is Guy Michelmore. In the Learning to Mix course promo - this expert award winning composer confesses he himself is challenged by mixing, so he's doing this course. That spirit of I'm a Human like YOU, and that kind of confidence that "if i can do it then you can do it. Why? because there are solutions and strategies for THAT thing" - a kind of recognition that no one is more knowing how to operate a daw, a sample orchestra etc. You never feel stupid with Guy and the team. You feel on the contrary THIS making music WELL even, is within reach. I now have the tools to unlock all this digital paraphernalia of DAWS and sound libraries - practice the skills presented here - yes i can do that. And if i don't practice that's on me.
the teaching approach cuts through the "supposed to know this if you're serious" to "here's how you can get your hands into what you really want to do: make music" - and build the other deeper bits onto that.
For example, Theory is great - it's not presented as some esoteric thing but as a way to make what you're doing - writing music - more accessible, sensible.
This ThinkSpace approach - It's really extraordinary. And wonderful too. The courses create space to "try it at home" as it were.
Concepts are presented; their effect and utility demonstrated; you are then invited to give it a go by adding your own bit to a track - for example, or to jam with a session again modelling what you've learned - that lets you apply the skills practiced in the lesson.
ThinkSpace is also regularly creating opportunities to see how what you've learned can be translated into various professional contexts by bringing together professionals to chat about how what they do happens.
ThinkSpace courses are not just effective at teaching and helping you really learn and practice the concepts they promise to teach, these courses are delightful.
Superior Online Education
Superior Online Education
Courses are taught by experienced industry professionals and are regularly updated; the back-channel Discord community is thoroughly portioned and moderated; the actual content is extremely well produced, well paced, and practical. They also continually seek feedback and improvement, and offer resources for students in a variety of ways.
Excellent place to learn the professional craft
Well-run, thoughtful program whose administrators are always working toward improving the student experience. I am learning so many important professional skills, expanding my musical imagination and my understanding of film & media generally, and connecting with many talented students and tutors. This program will give me the scoring experience and the confidence I need to seek high-quality collaborators and clients.
Helping you become the best you can be
Recently completed a Masters degree programme in Professional Media Composition with TSE. Staff, tutors and fellow students are very friendly. Quality course material and assignments very relevant to the industry and having tutors who are all practising professionals providing feedback sets their courses above others offered. Even though these are online courses, you are made to feel part of a community with the goal to help you become the best you can be. I learned and enjoyed things so much, I signed up again.
Solid Courses and Great Teaching
I’ve done several courses with ThinkSpace Education and am just about to start my ninth. The content is practical, well-structured, and easy to follow. Guy Michelmore is an engaging and down-to-earth teacher who explains things clearly and with just the right amount of humour.
Support has always been helpful and quick to respond. Overall, a great experience and well worth it if you’re looking to build your skills in music composition or production.
I cannot recommend TSE enough :)
If you enjoy Guy's content on YouTube, you will absolutely love his teaching style in the courses.
While you won’t see Guy in person for the vast majority of the Zoom classes, his fellow tutors are incredibly kind, highly professional, closely connected to the industry, and really know how to consistently encourage people while clearly sharing their opinions on your current assignments.
The peer-review-based approach to learning, where students, guided by tutors, provide feedback on each other’s assignments, is brilliant. The level of musicianship among the master’s participants is very high, and at the same time, the people are very much down to earth (unlike in other arts universities ;)).
Academically, I can say the marks on my assignments, together with the feedback, were fair. I also want to highlight how quickly TSE responds to support tickets and suggestions for course improvements.
I’m deeply grateful for all the knowledge I’ve gained over the past two years, and I’m now looking forward to my final major project (basically the master’s thesis) for the MA Composing for Videogames course.
I deeply want to thank TSE for the journey I’ve had so far :))

I finished Bootcamp last Friday
I finished Bootcamp last Friday, and I already miss it. Watching the prerecorded lessons, with exercises, and then having live Zoom classes and music reviews is a good way to learn, and the goal-based plan keeps things moving. I do know that the materials will stay available to me for referral later on, and I still have to submit my final piece for written review. So, Bootcamp will continue, and hearing the tutor's advice will stay in my mind as I go forward. If a person is interested in improving their composition and orchestration, they should seriously consider this course.
Don’t hesitate to give Bootcamp a go!
Just finished the Bootcamp course and would highly recommend it to anyone thinking of doing it.
Emily, Rob and Chuck are incredibly knowledgeable and constructive in their feedback. The sessions were very useful and informative and suitable for all levels of musical background and ability.
The live sessions are great but (if you work full time like me) you can always watch them on catch up.
My only suggestion for improvement would be to reduce the live feedback sessions to an hour and have more dates to accommodate everyone or alternatively, if keeping to 2.5 hours, then allocate a half hour slot to each person in case their time is limited to join online. Also please send the zoom link reminders out a few hours (rather a few minutes) before each meeting starts.
Thank you to all at Thinkspace though…just a brilliant experience!
'Orchestral Bootcamp'is really terrific.
Just finished 'Orchestral Bootcamp'.
This is a brilliant course, full on and boy do you get value for money. I learned a LOT not just about orchestration but the process of creating music. Especially useful are the live webinars and the live and written feedback sessions for work that you've submitted. The three tutors are properly critical and very accurate in their critique. They listen to your work very carefully and make suggestions which invariably improve both the work and the student. Even when being critical, they are always kind. I've done loads of TSE courses and they are all excellent, but the 'live' element of this one blew me away. It's improved my thinking immeasurably. If you're thinking of doing this course, don't hesitate but be prepared to work hard. There's a lot to get through but it's worth it. As a bonus, all the materials from the previous times this course has been run are available.
More than I anticipated!
I began with their 5 Day Taster Course and loved what I saw, both the depth and breadth of the training. I've watched Guy's videos on YouTube for years and love his approach. He's fun, funny, and you feel like you're in the room with him. As entertaining as I find his YT videos, I worried that his training courses would also be filled with some of the fun antics he adds to his YT videos. But they are not. His courses are all business and to the point, providing maximum learning opportunity, delivered in Guy's cheerful and easy-going style.
I bought the How to Score Films and couldn't stop watching and learning, so I finished it in no time. It covered all the points you need to get started, or advance your existing skills. This course is good for beginners and those who may have already started but are struggling. I also purchased the Orchestral Mixing with Jake Jackson at the same time, but have not begun that course yet.
As a result of my satisfaction with How to Score Films and after watching a few of the samples of the course, I also just purchased the How to Write Trailer Music today while still on sale. I can't wait to get started with both to them.
If you are an interested beginner or a working pro needing more expertise, Guy's courses are an excellent resource at very reasonable rates. Lifetime access, downloadable course materials, and Discord access to the community, are all valuable components of any training regimen.
I highly recommend Guy and his team at Thinkspace Education.
I don’t know what to complain about
I don’t know what to complain about, amazing tutors , easy to understand , I don’t even need to tell you how great it is , the 30 day refund policy explains it all. Even if you don’t understand something you can tell them , in the feedback box ,so that they make a « further explanation » video . It’s just … amazing to learn from the experts.
Signing up to TSE was the best impulse…
Signing up to TSE was the best impulse decision I ever made. I began studying my MA in Composing for Video Games 18 months ago and just handed in my final project. It's been such a ride and gone so fast, and I've learned so much in the process.
The highlight for me were definitely the 121s, the quality of the teaching staff is top notch, a super knowledgeable, friendly and supportive crew who are always enthusiastic and eager to share what they know.
The admin staff have also been very accommodating and have facilitated any queries or issues (like SLC failing to release my loan according to the proper payment schedule) quickly and helpfully.
The course material is very much focused on casual games, which will be great for people who want to head in that direction. Personally, I would have liked to have some more narrative driven options, but there is quite a lot of variety and a couple of modules do give you a lot more freedom. Mike Worth's Contemporary Game Scoring was my favourite module due to the freedom it allowed, but the most restrictive assignments were probably the ones I benefited from most (Mike is also a walking encyclopedia of JRPGs and theory!)
A year ago I was messaging Thomas Hansen in a panic because I was so freaked out by using Wwise. Now I absolutely love working in Wwise and am getting into more advanced Unity scripting and integration.
Joel Grant's mixing advice took my production to a much higher level and finally to a place where I actually feel pretty happy with it.
Sergio Ronchetti's career advice really helped with my portfolio and networking skills so I now feel much more comfortable with it.
And James Elsey, who mentored me through my Final Major Project, has an excellent eye for detail and managed to strike just the right balance of offering both support and critique in a project I was struggling to negotiate.
I would be really sad that it's over, but they offer post-post-grad courses for alumni for professional development, so I'm looking forward to getting started on that when it next comes around.
Thanks TSE for the amazing (at times humbling) but always stimulating and inspiring, year.
Hands-on course to get you writing cinematic music!
This is a comprehensive and hands-on course that encourages you to have a go with cinematic orchestral arrangements through novel and challenging exercises. The course is led more by example than theory - on several videos, you watch Guy go through the process, making mistakes and fixing them, experimenting with different rhythmic and melodic styles, and then asking you to have a go. This style might not suit all, but the topic is far too large to cover on a course of this size and price, so I think it is the best way to get you started.
Excellent 'Minus One' exercises
Guy and his team at ThinkSpace have a very engaging style with their online courses.
The presenters are professionals in their fields of expertise and present the material in accessible chunks.
The 'Minus One' exercises are excellent: they reinforce the theory with practical application.
Incredible course
Incredible course! The great Guy guides us in this journey with passion and professionality. Thank You ThinkSpace Education
