I'd resign if I were in charge of this outfit.
Seriously? Someone at the top of this organisation might choose to step down and recognise they're not up to the job. Please have a plan B when travelling on this line. Even the on board announcements trying to explain the constant delays are often unintelligible.
Absolutely dire
I used Thameslink regularly between Surrey and London for several weeks, and nearly every single journey was delayed — sometimes by a very significant margin.
Entire evenings (5 hours) of trains were cancelled entirely last minute, leaving me stranded and vulnerable waiting until midnight (when train should have been 7.30pm) in unmanned stations - very scary as a lone woman navigating late-night travel.
The lack of communication and reliability was disappointing, especially given the disproportionally high fares.
For a service that many rely on daily, it really needs to do better in terms of consistency and safety.
I am so happy I don't need to use the service any longer, now that I have returned to a location with functional rail services.
Needs new management
This is the shittiest train line ever. Not enough that trains dont run very iften and my station has been relegated to the unimportant category and hence made inaccessible (need several changes to many locations) but now trains are cancelled all the time and they are late on top of that. I should have just taken the overground. Ugh
Staff shortages excuse for excessive cancellations
Thameslink is using the August period as excuse for excessive cancellations due to ‘staff shortages’.
Other companies manage appropriate holiday staff plans so why can’t they?
Avoid like the plague useless customer service reps
Trains were cancelled for over 2.5 hours and delayed. Had to get a taxi to make my flight. Their customer service reps were useless. I left over 3.5 hours before my flight should have gotten to the airport 2.5 hours before because it's an hour journey but trains were delayed by 1.5 hours and had 5 cancellations they refused to pay for my taxi which I was forced to take utterly useless and rude.
Avoid if other train operators available
I have the misfortune of having to rely on Thameslink trains twice per week. While I understand delays caused by network outages, Thameslink are often either delayed or cancelled due to staff shortages. I almost never catch a train that is on time and gets to where it's going on time. Delay Repay is a joke when you're inconvenienced literally every time you travel. Lots of nuances (such as the difficulty in claiming against split ticket fares) make it almost impossible to get adequate compensation for things like missed
meetings.
Beyond disgusting trains.
It’s not every day that I get to feel such visceral disgust within moments of boarding a train. The layered dirt in the seat cracks, the crusted gunk near the window ledge, ingrained chewing gum blacked with human filth and the overall ambiance of "festering bio-hazard" really added a rustic touch that no sterile commuter service could replicate. I must say, it takes a special kind of operational excellence to operate a service for £9.10 (Gatwick to Burgess Hill) that resembles the inside of a wheelie bin.
All trains were cancelled from Brighton…
All trains were cancelled from Brighton station on 05/07 so I had to go to another station, adding an hour to my journey - I had to fight for a £2 refund via delay repay as they believed I was only delayed for 15mins - jokers
Constant cancellations due to ‘train…
Constant cancellations due to ‘train crew shortages’, totally unreliable for any journey that is important.
Alternative Crossrail 2
We travelled from Letchworth Garden City to Wimbledon via Farringdon with Thameslink. So much better than using South Western Railway and the Underground through Central London. Why can’t Network Rail build flyovers west of Wimbledon to extend the service further westwards with better signalling? It will be a cheaper and time efficient solution using the same infrastructure.
Filthy trains zero maintenance
The uks various train companies generally have zero maintenance between the lot of them but thameslink takes some beating, absolutely disgusting filthy trains despite being some of the newest on the network, clearly the mantra is buy a new train and then do zero maintenance for its entire lifetime 2 cleaners at Bedford station were sat doing nothing and then got off, the trains in a right state, flithy floors, seats, windows its plain disgraceful. The problem is you pay peanuts you get moneys, it might help if you trained them or gave them some actual cleaning equipment!
Avoid thameslink at all costs
Train in was late by 5 minutes and then delayed at King’s Cross. Missed my connection so had to take a cab. On the way home they cancelled both my trains due to lack of crew. I take the train about once every three months and not a single time have I had a prompt service from this shambles of an operator. Also most of the time the toilets are not in use. If you have any alternative method of transport into London take it. The staff are rude and demotivated and the complaints procedure takes about 30 minutes and you get a response such as “if you need the toilet leave the train and use the facilities in the train stations” of which there are none on my route. The whole service is not fit for purpose. Avoid at all costs

Generally unreliable from St Pancras or Finsbury Park to New Barnet 19.17 from Finsbury Park cancelled yet again - alternative train slower and extends journey time. Luckily I can still drive and most times do so, except when I occasionally make the insane choice to trust this service. So much for getting us out of our cars...
Brilliant service at Bedford station
Jason at Bedford Station took us to the most appropriate carriage for our journey to London St Pancras. He was friendly and helpful. A credit to Thameslink.
Good luck getting to Gatwick airport!
I arrived at Gatwick airport after midnight twice in the last month. I also booked an early flight so had to get there ideally before 4am. In all three occasions the next available train got cancelled, and there is only one train every hour. You can imagine how much inconvenience this has caused.
Terrible
Terrible. Constantly late or cancelled. You pay ridiculous money for first class tickets only to have first class declassified regularly and no seats! Incredibly rude staff that are definitely not there for the benefit of the customer. DO BETTER!
Try to avoid using this service
Thames link are one of the worst train services Iv ever used. Always cancelling trains with very poor excuses that seem to me as lies. I think it’s down to poor quality staff issues that they are constantly covering up
Underrated Quality despite on huge fares
It’s too expensive, and for that price, you would expect decent service quality and at least clean seats — but that’s not the case. There are always cancellations and delays. The explanation is almost always the same: ‘shortage of train crew.’ Has your driver ever told you in the last 15 minutes before departure that they’re not coming? That’s just not logical.
As a northern who moved recently to the…
As a northern who moved recently to the south, I would like to give only one star, and that’s solely for the Costa Coffee shop at St Albans city Station. As for the train service, it is extremely poor compared to other UK railway networks. Trains are cancelled/ delayed on a daily basis, carriages are consistently overcrowded—with barely any space to stand, let alone find a seat—and ticket prices are outrageously high for anyone commuting in and out of London.
The staff offer little to no help, and train operators often fail to make even basic announcements for passengers. On most of my journeys, there’s no mobile coverage, and accessing the internet is practically impossible due to the weak or nonexistent signal.
Overall, Thameslink is a disgrace to the UK rail system.
