Easy to set up and use
Buying and setting up the square pos is easy and works wonderfully. We first started with the free version from our phone but upgraded to the reader. It wasn’t that expensive and has been well worth the purchase. The phone version reads from phones very well but doesn’t read actual cards very well. Definitely consider the reader! We also bought the dock and are very happy with that was well.

Square is great if you don't want to be paid for years.
Square competely failed me as a provider - repeatedly withheld payments from clients, refused to refund clients and then withheld my payments illegally for 2 years without any communication.
Repeated attempts to contact Square Australia and Square.com were ignored.

Square’s been a game-changer for my small business
Square has been a game-changer for my small business. It would’ve been easier if could use the dashboard app alone to create website rather than going back and forth to square online but was still easy enough in the end to navigate and get my small business up and running :)

Format is confusing and time consuming. The cost is too much for a casual user. I downloaded this si could sell stuff once a month at a market and it cost me more to pay for the app than i made.

Email addresses can only be used once forever
Beware - you can only use your email address once with Square. If you close your account and need to start a new one - to take advantage of the lower 1.3% fee for example, you can NEVER AGAIN use the same email address. There is zero help, I am only being told the same script over and over again “the email address is already in use” despite the account being closed and no longer active. Where is the support? Why can’t I use my email account again? This is the only service I have ever come across that does this.

We appreciate you sharing your experience. We understand your frustration with not being able to reuse your email address after closing your Square account. Square Sellers cannot use the same email address to create multiple Square accounts, even on deactivated accounts, for security purposes.
However, our Support Team is able to "free" your email address, so it can be used on a new account. They'll just need to confirm some security information with you first. When you have the chance, please contact our Support Team here: squ.re/contact and request for your email address to be freed for your new account.
Square is not for incorporated organisations
Square has demonstrated a complete inability to support incorporated organisations.
As an incorporated not-for-profit in regional Australia, we were asked by Square to obtain and provide highly sensitive personal documents (including death certificates, IDs, powers of attorney and court orders) relating to a former staff member who left over six years ago and is now deceased. This is inappropriate and, for organisations bound by Australian privacy law, likely unlawful.
Square’s support model appears designed almost entirely for sole traders, with no understanding of staff turnover, governance, privacy obligations, or record-retention laws that apply to real organisations. When we raised these concerns, the only solution offered was “use a different email address”, rather than addressing the underlying issue.
Despite being a long-term customer and having recently spent thousands on Square hardware, we were effectively blocked from continuing to use their services unless we breached our legal obligations.
If you are an incorporated organisation, charity, or not-for-profit, proceed with extreme caution. Square is not set up to support you.
*EDIT: I have reached out to Square numerous times and they legit refuse to help. Square is only for sole-trader run businesses, no one else.
