Basing Master Course @ Badmoon
I'd previously been on the essentials courses that taught me some great techniques to level up my miniature painting. The basing course follows the same principles, but with a load of new ideas and techniques to improve the realism of the bases and bring them inline with the quality learnt previously.
There was a good number of different bits and James encouraged creativity both when building and painting a number of different environments in varying seasons and we all finished with some really unique, great looking pieces.

Fun with basing.
I had a lot of fun on the basing course especially working with a variety of materials I had not used before including plasticard and plaster of paris. We touched on the opportunities with basing to create a world to ground a miniature within using the seasons, weathering and a variety of materials to spin a narrative. We also covered using the base to provide another avenue of contrast for the miniature in terms of colour, texture and even in a lore/background sense. In all I thoroughly recommend the course for anyone looking to both explore and have more fun with basing.

Excellent professional tuition
I was gifted a 1 hour 1-1 virtual tuition. The flexibility in terms of choosing what to cover was surprising and very welcome. The tuition was also very professional and immensely helpful. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would absolutely recommend Siege tuition to other painters.

Exceptional service an results!
I have been reallly happy with everything Siege has done since the very start of the process. Always there to answer my questions, explain the process and keep me updated with progress to ensure my models come out perfectly.
Now that I have received my models, I can honestly say that they are incredible. I have models ranging from bronze to gold standard and the care and attention to detail is clear in every single one.

The teacher extremely knowledgeable
The teacher was very knowledgeable about the topic, which really put me at ease as well as communicated very clearly and effectively. He, somehow? covered exactly what I had questions about, I remmebr thinking, he went over every single mistake I have made and taught the correct method. I learnt more than I expected I could learn, for being as new as I am. I will honestly try evberything I was reccomended, get some minis under my belt, and get more sessions!

Amazing Team
The team was extremely cooperative and did amazing work on my model. During the commission, I was hospitalized and needed time to get my finances back in order and the team worked with me 100% to make sure I could still get my model even though the final payment was severely delayed. The teacher gave a great amount of attention to every student - very knowledgeable.
However, we were given a list of paints needed, and we did not need most of them, which was frustrating as I had bought those specific colours for his course.

Essential Master Course 1 - Bad Moon Cafe
I attended the Essentials Master Course 1 at Bad Moon Cafe.
The course was well organised and the instructor (James) was an absolute pleasure to deal with. So why only 3 stars?
Here are the reasons:
* Not enough time spent on fundamentals - loading brush, diluting paints, practicing basecoating and layering on different shapes of surfaces. There was a lot to cover in just two days and I felt we could have easily just focused on these two topics and completed a full miniature, rather than just a sword, base and a head.
* Heavy airbrush use. There was a good reason for this but I think most of us are not going to be aiming to become commission painters, and an airbrush setup is a significant investment. The airbrush section could have been cut out completely and the head painting replaced with instructions for using a normal brush on top of an undercoat.
* The venue (Bad Moon Cafe) was great but the table setup was suboptimal for observing James do the work. Day 2 despite being very close all I could see was the bottom of the base and then the finished article when the part was being circulated dor inspection. Having a table setup, perhaps with a screen to show a zoomed-in view of what the instructor was doing, or a smaller group so that it’s easier to get a good look at the instructor painting, would have been helpful.
* The speed of instruction was inconsistent and picked up greatly in day 2, to the point where it was becoming a bit overwhelming towards the end. Less is more, to my first point above.
* James was perhaps overly polite in his feedback and critique, I would have preferred a far harsher feedback than I was given - especially as I could see the additional mistakes in daylight when I got home.
I did enjoy the course and greatly valued the opportunity to ask questions and connect with others. Was it worth it? I would err on the side of “yes” but only just about.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts following your experience on the Essentials Master Course 1 at Bad Moon Café. I’m very glad you found the class well organised and enjoyed meeting other students, and I appreciate your constructive feedback.
Course Structure and Content - The course curriculum is visible when purchasing a ticket and detailed again in the course pack sent after booking. While I appreciate your comments on structure, students have full visibility of what is covered and the loose timings from the outset. The class is built to teach specific techniques rather than complete a full miniature, which is why we use individual parts. This approach removes pressure from working on personal models and allows everyone to focus on achieving consistent, high-quality results.
Airbrush Use - The airbrush section has been a core part of this course for over ten years. Although airbrushes are often used by commission painters, they are also extremely useful for hobbyists for basecoating, priming, and smooth blends. This section consistently receives positive feedback from students of all levels.
Venue and Visibility - We have taught at Bad Moon Café for over five years and regularly receive positive feedback on both the venue and facilities. I’m sorry the setup did not meet your expectations this time. During each demonstration, pieces are passed around for all students to view under their lamps, and I remind everyone to move closer or ask to see a step again if needed. I encourage questions and make it clear from the start that there are no silly questions and to always ask until satisfied. I am therefore a little surprised that you were seated close but didn’t get to view the demo pieces. Your suggestion about adding a screen is appreciated, though many students prefer examining the pieces directly for colour and texture. We’ll keep this in mind for future classes.
Pace of Instruction - The pace of the class is structured to start slowly on Day 1 as students learn new methods, then progress faster on Day 2 when those skills are put into practice. This ensures the full curriculum is covered and confidence builds through repetition. I’m sorry it felt too quick at times and will take your comments onboard when reviewing the balance.
Feedback and Critique - Feedback is always factual, honest, and encouraging. It is never meant to be harsh, but constructive and supportive so that students leave confident and motivated. If my feedback felt polite, that was because your painting was genuinely strong.
Technical Topics - For clarity, dilution (both brush and airbrush), brush loading, control, and layering were all covered throughout the weekend. These are key parts of the EMC1 curriculum and are demonstrated to the group as well as individually during my walkthroughs with each student.
Thank you again for your feedback. I’m sorry your experience was not what we hope for and appreciate you taking the time to share it with us. It was a pleasure having you on the class and I wish you the best in your continued painting journey.
