Purchased through ancestry.com because…

Purchased through ancestry.com because I was interested in an newspaper article that came up in a search. Newspapers.com website is slow and clunky.
I cannot search newspapers in my area, Kent but there are lots in Birmingham and Liverpool, no good to my family search. The search filters a very broad so you end up trawling through pages without success.
I won't be renewing!

No customer service AT ALL

I emailed Newspapers.com through their website to cancel my trial membership the day before it was set to end, as I couldn’t find how to cancel it on the site. I received an auto-response stating that someone would contact me within 1-2 business days. After not hearing back for a week and being charged for the membership, I called and left a message. I also emailed their support team and received another response stating that they would get back to me within 1-2 business days. It's now been three weeks, and I still haven't heard from them.

Even more frustrated.

I have tried and tried to resolve an account issue with newspapers.com. They only way I can get them to respond to me is through Trustpilot. I cannot access the site because I no longer have access to the email address I originally used to create my ancestry.com account. I really need to talk to a human being at newspapers.com to get this solved. They continue to take my money but they won't help me fix my account problem so that I can use the site.

Room for Improvement

Normally I have a good experience with Newspapers.com. However, I recently tried signing into my account (I'm a subscriber) and it told me that it didn't recognize my web browser - the same one I've been using for at least 5 years or so. I had to fill out a form because they have no phone number to call and get your problem solved the same day. You need same-day service!

A scam of a company

A scam of a company whose business model appears to be to be as intentionally uncommunicative as possible, to reap bank account information from you at the earliest convenience and then to hide while they continue to steal money from you monthly or biannually, without communicating or making any clear means of the customer being able to change their preferences. They also make it IMPOSSIBLE to remove your bank details from their system once they have it. I genuinely haven’t come across such a morally dubious, disgraceful company since the nineties! Lacking integrity if they were a flag they would be a raging red one.. STEER VERY CLEAR.

BEWARE of efforts to cancel Newspapers.com!

I began in late July 2024 trying to cancel my Newspapers.com account. I went to their website and followed directions: go to account, look for "subscriptions & payments" and click on that. Well, I did that and it didn't work. Nothing regarding my subscriptions or payments appeared. I called Ancestry to see if they could help me cancel. Nope, they could not. They gave me a phone # for NP.com. I called and received only a message to leave my name & number and someone "will call me back". A month went by with no call back. I received an email from NP.com to thank me for renewing my account! So, once again, I repeated all steps I had taken a month ago to try to cancel this account. Nothing worked. I phoned and left a message that I knew would not be returned. Then I sent the following email:

""I have been trying for a month to cancel my account with Newspapers.com. At your online site you advise me to go to my account information & select subscriptions and payments. When I do that, subscriptions & payments appears as if it is "processing" and nothing comes up. Nowhere can I find what credit card information you have on file, and nowhere can I find any way to CANCEL THIS ACCOUNT!
This morning I received an email thanking me for renewing my Newspapers.com account, with $29.95 charged to my credit card (!!)
Since I find NO phone contact number on your website, I called Ancestry.com to see if they could help me in canceling my account with Newspapers.com. They could not, however they did give me the phone number to contact you. I remember doing exactly all of these steps 4 weeks ago. I called the phone number, a message answers requiring me to leave my name and phone number to be called back when someone is available to do so. And of course.... NO ONE ever calls back.
Sooo, I am asking you to please cancel my account on Newspapers.com and refund the $29.95 charged to my credit card NOW.
In case you may tell me you are unable to refund this $29.95 charge because I didn't contact you to cancel 30 days ago, please be advised I TRIED to cancel this account a month ago.
I truly believe your intentions for anyone trying to cancel their Newpapers.com account online are specific in hiding every possibility one has to find a way on your website to do so. In other words, I would definitely say this is a SCAM.
Your company should review your business practices because they are shameful.""

I would give 0 if I could

I would give 0 if I could! I bought a subscription for $30. Never even got to use it they wanted $60 to see anything. First said that I didn't cancel, then said I would not get a refund after 30 days when all my records say less than 30 days and when I canceled said I would get $23.57 back ( I knew by the attitude I was getting nothing back) then told them not to email me anymore they emailed me within a hour. This now is harassment and nasty on their part. People in business should be held accountable if they continue to harass.

Charged $94.90 more than what they offered

Through google I ended up on newspapers.com that offered a 6-month Publisher Extra subscription for $54.90+tax. After filling out my credit card details I got billed twice for $74.90+tax. Is this an error or a complete scam? I want to cancel, this is breach of contract.

Update: received all payments back within a day after complaining through their website.

I've had a paid account for exactly 1 day and I'm disgusted and disappointed with this service. I will NEVER pay for this junk again. Tell me....why exactly do you offer the $7.95 subscription?? So that when I open ANY newspaper article, I'm reminded to pay $19.95/month if I want to see anything? This is an absolute SCAM. GET RID OF YOUR $7.95 SUBSCRIPTION. STOP SCAMMING PEOPLE. AND I WILL BE PUTTING THIS ON ALL REVIEWS. People should be aware that you MUST pay 19.95/month and the 7.95 is a joke and scam.

There are some exceptions to this, but this is typically the case. We have contracts with the copyright holders/publishers to use their content on our site. We have to pay more for these papers and therefore require an upgraded subscription level. The PUBLISHER EXTRA subscription gives you access to all of the copyrighted content on our site as well as all BASIC content.
You currently have a Newspapers.com BASIC subscription and do not have access to PUBLISHER EXTRA content. If you are wanting to access that content, you will need to upgrade your subscription.
If you do not wish to see PUBLISHER EXTRA content in your search results, there is an option to the right of these results that says "Hide Publishers Extra matches" with an "X" next to it. Clicking on any of these will temporarily hide all of them so they do not show in your search results for the remainder of that search session.

Poor Support, Good Website

This is a follow-up on my earlier review. Getting no satisfaction from Newspapers.com Support, I took my computer to a shop and had it checked out. Turns out it was too old to connect. I bought a newer computer and that solved the problem. I am very satisfied with the website now, but two months of frustration could have been avoided if Support had asked me how old my computer was instead of just hitting the boilerplate button. There is much room for improvement with Support.

Poor customer service and forced source info

I hate that I have to have your source page when I clip! It wasn't like this before (even last week which was the end of April). That means I have to try to manipulate that out when I save, but it doesn't work because once I do that it comes out too big for the page. It can't even be done when I import it into a JPG then try to crop it, then try to save it as a PDF again it is still too big. I already had to edit articles out in Chronicling America, and that is why I purchased newspapers.com. I didn't have to do this with the old model. This new function does not make writing and researching easier especially for professional researchers and writers like me. Now, if I want to insert an article in a report I'm writing, I have to go through this whole cutting and pasting procedure so I don't have your source page info on it. I might as well go back to Chronicling America and not pay for something that doesn't make my work efficient. Also, I have called, called and called and emailed, emailed and emailed to complain about the ampersand problem. I can't use an ampersand when searching. I have tried when I have been looking for ads for businesses with ampersands in their business name and I get this ridiculous "&amp". No one answers the phone (even though there is a prompt that says "we are serving customers..." and instead asks to "leave a message or email". What's the point if I never hear back?

You have to cancel 2 days in advance and your 7 day trial ends immediately if you cancel. If any of their products were a normal price like $10-$20/ month without requiring a 6 month commitment I might actually use them from time to time. Instead I always walk away feeling it's not worth the risk.

March 2024 I was over charged for…

March 2024 I was over charged for renewal. I messaged newspapers.com and recieved no customer support. April 15th 2024 the site was no longer allowing me to search with a location & name. I sent a message about that and still received no support up until today April 17th. I decided to try it again, and I still cannot use the site. I sent another message. Based on my experience as of late, and seeing in the reviews here I’m realizing newspaper has gone down significantly & has no problem scamming customers. I’m currently over paying for a site I cannot use, that has a non-existent customer support. Very disgusting.

I have submitted many weeks of repeated requests via email from my temporary email address to support AT newspapers.com to optout my information on three (3) newspapers.com URLs.

Newspapers.com support never responded or removed any of my information. Newspapers.com is neither following their own process or performing what their reply is to others on trustpilot.com requesting the same issue.

4/23/2024 update: Trustpilot requesting more information from newspapers.com or will delete my review, Prior two (2) latest requests to newspapers.com with their statement that will respond within 1-2 business days, which they never did: NewsID: 1-1733716 (April 10, 2024), NewsID: 1-1734315 (April 14, 2024). Also sent support AT newspapers.com an email with same details.

Newspapers.com is a rip-off

Newspapers.com's website is a mess, and search results are unreliable. You can search for a name and receive a number of results, and then accidentally find that same name in another newspaper on their site that wasn't included in the search results. They recently "updated" their site: a search for the name "Bobby" creates results in only 5 newspapers in Illinois. Clearly this name "Bobby" appears in more than 5 newspapers in Illinois. I'll be canceling my subscription pronto.

NO CUSTOMER SERVICE AT ALL!!!

I used a subscription to this service as part of my Ancestry.com genealogy research. When I was emailed that the sub had automatically renewed I contacted them to cancel it and retroactively credit my account for the one day that it was active. After not hearing anything from them (they say on the website that they'll return your inquiry in 1-2 days) after a full week I'm getting pretty angry.

UPDATE: Emailed the customer service address for the 3rd time. Got the same boilerplate response. Still no resolution.

Update: April 15th 2023
Still haven't heard back from the nonexistent customer service regarding cancelling my account and refunding my $60.00. These folks are absolute crap.

FRAUD

In February I thought about setting up the week free trial but the site would not let me. Never once was I able to sign up for any type of subscription, free or not but I did put my card number in and attempt. Noticed a $50 charge to my account in early March. My initial thought was that maybe I somehow did sign up for a subscription but upon logging in it says no active subscription! I have called the newspaper.com support number every day for weeks on end and have emailed them screenshots of the transaction from my account, screenshots showing I have no active subscription, still no response. I work in the legal field and if there is a continued lack of response I will be taking legal action and if it comes down to it we plan sue!

Part of Ancestry's plan of getting greedier and greedier. When I first used the site a couple of years ago, my little $7 subscription let me see whatever I needed to. All the sudden not that long ago I try to renew as I'd stopped researching for a while due to Ancestry and their stupid money hungry schemes but was curious about a few things. Now nothing I tried to look at, was I actually able to look at. The $7 basic is 100% useless. 95% of anything you need to look at it is under ~premium~. It's so so so stupid. But we all know how the verse goes, " The love of money is the root of all evil " so to speak. People are too strapped for these schemes these days. No amount of "but we have to pay more for most of these papers!!" Will justify baiting people into a useless $7 subscription just for them to find out they can't view anything with it, and then doubling the price. I could understand if it went up a little, but it doubled. It's greed.
