Quick response, professional and friendly
I called MJP as I needed some electrical work done and they sent Chris out to look at the particulars of the job to ensure an accurate quote. Chris was very friendly and respectful of our property and pets. When the works were completed Chris cleaned up and left no trace of dust dirt or rubbish and put back anything he'd have to move. Along with the contact from Laurie on the phone the whole experience was pleasant. I would definitely recommend and use MJP again

I contracted MPJ Electrical to carry out an EICR on my property. They failed the EICR (among other things) because the bathroom light was deemed to not be IP rated. However, it is more than 0.6m away from the edge of the bath and so does not need to be IP rated. That doesn’t matter though because the light is already rated IP44.
The report also says that the Fuse box was not IP rated. When I questioned this with MJP Electrical, as the fuse box needs to be opened with a screwdriver and has face plates covering any gaps as per regulations, they said it was because the cables came through holes at the top of the fuse box which were large enough to allow debris to fall in and that the cables needed to enter through glands. Both of these statements are incorrect. They also failed the installation because they said the upstairs lighting circuit didn't have a route to earth. However, on the EICR certificate, they have put the result of that test as a limitation so they didn't even carry out the test!
Once they completed the EICR the quote for the remedial works included changing and replacing the bathroom light (which didn't need doing), 2 hours to investigate the lack of a route to earth even though they hadn't carried out the test so they don't know if there is a route to earth…… Earth cables are coming into the fuse box from the upstairs lighting circuit. All lights and switches also have earth cables attached. They quoted to replace the 80A fused switch which currently protects the fuse box however with a consumer unit change (which I believe I need), the need for the 80A switch is no longer there.
The quote also included testing and certifying the installation which should come as part of the consumer unit change and reissuing of the EICR which again isn’t necessary, they just need to note that the works have been done. Overall they tried to charge me £1165 for several unnecessary remedial works. When I asked for a breakdown of the costs, they refused saying this is how they do it as it's the most cost-effective way for the client. A simple consumer unit change, costing half what they quoted me allowed the property to pass its EICR.
There are plenty of honest electricians out there, this company is not one of them. They have lots of great reviews, I’m assuming, because the electricians are polite and respectable. Unfortunately, they will also try and get as much money out of you as possible. AVOID!!!!

This company is an absolute joke
This company is an absolute joke. Tried tricking into a super fast quote (JUST QUOTE) at £60 upfront. After 2 weeks I eventually got the fee quote that is almost double of what has been quoted by other companies. PEOPLE ABOID THEM, this company is a rip off £1400 for 5 sockets and a cooker wiring. They didn’t even need to chase down any cables as we said trunking would be acceptable.

Avoid... Trading Standards notified
I got a quote from MJP for a list of jobs to complete for almost 900 GBP. On the very day when the engineer was coming, we started the day with this email:
“Unfortunately there has been a mistake on your original quote - the price was only for 1 downlight rather than 14. I have now revised this. Please accept our apologies here! Please find attached confirmation of our charges, which are £1120.98 including VAT.”
220 GBP increase out of the blue on the very day? They claimed that the quoted price included 1 spotlight by mistake, not 14 that I needed. Again, this may or may not be true (the quote had no itemisation, only listing the jobs and quoting a single price, i.e. they don’t give visibility on the details), but also irrelevant as the quote was for a price and a list of items, that’s what we agreed on. Yet, I reluctantly agreed to pay £999.18.
Then the engineer came around to do the work, but also mentioned part of the agreed jobs would not be actually done (estimated around 150-200 GBP of the 900 GBP).
Thereafter they gave me a “discount” saying “To resolve, as the fans have not been fit, we would like to propose a reduction in this quote by £132.00”. This “discount” is from the increased quote, so overall I needed to pay them £867.18 (almost what the original quote was for), yet they have never completed minimum 150 GBP worth of the work.
It is absolutely irrelevant that they claim to have errors left and right. In fact, they were unable to issue a single quote or invoice correctly. They even issued an invoice with the “work completed” indicated the items they didn’t complete and about which we were arguing the whole day.
Utterly unprofessional company that is changing the quote price and the scope of the work arbitrarily. I accepted a certain price, for a certain list of jobs to do, end of story. I notified Trading Standards as well… not likely anything will come of it to be honest.
UPDATE: for all fairness, they did reach out to try to rectify the situation… install the fans they haven’t done, for an additional 132 GBP bringing the total back to GBP 999.18. I eventually refused, as I no longer have confidence in that the below “solution” would result in a decent outcome, and not a ruined ceiling for me to also fix:
“This is a quotation to fit standard 4inch fans as the fans currently in use are
difficult to obtain - in order to get the fan to fit a sheet of plasterboard will
need to be cut around the fan and filling and sanding will be required”

Not impressed
Paid a large sum for a call out (fair enough it was a Sunday). After 2 tries problem still there - was then quoted another £350 for them to have another go. Problem sorted in less than an hour by another electrician.

Trading Standards informed
A pendant light they were supposed to have fixed as part of bringing a property up to EICR standard was not (according to my tenant) fixed when they came out. I reported this to them on the basis it must have been overlooked. They refused to come back to fix it properly implying the tenant had broken it. They made a temporary repair when they came out to quote me for smoke alarms they had told me were out of date, but which weren’t. The tenant has contacted me to say the same issue with the lamp has happened again. I think it is safe to say, on the balance of probabilities, it was never fixed it in the first place.
See my previous review on these scammers. I have reported them to Trading Standards. You should too if you’ve had the bad service I have.
Terrible. Goodness knows how many satisfied customers have, in reality, paid for unnecessary work.

Scammers - told me work was needed which wasn’t
MJP seemed like a good choice at first. Boy was I wrong. The EICR recommended a lot of work that was not necessary on the previous EICR - I ran with it. Things started to go awry the moment I asked for before and after pictures - which were not forthcoming without quite some chasing. Next, they went ahead with work without getting clearance and tried to add a further £200. Then I asked them to fix work they had missed (some exposed wiring) they tried to say it had been done already. Despite numerous chasing emails they never fixed it. They were asked to supply a quote for two supposedly out of date smoke alarms but then added in a heat sensor without being asked. I asked for them to split out the quote, they prevaricated. They told me it was a legal requirement to have a heat sensor - it isn't. When I queried this they refused to enter into further correspondence. They'll seem like a pukka outfit but will try to scam you in to paying for work that is not required by misrepresenting the law to you.
EDIT the tenant has just sent me photos of the two smoke alarms. Both are in date. Neither required replacing.
