Rooftop Vibes! Cocktails and Good times!
My wife and I went for a few drinks on the hotel roof top at Hotel Du Vin in Brighton yesterday and John at the bar made wonderful cocktails and crafted orange peel garnish into mini masterful art work. John was such a pleasant, skilled and wonderful member of your team. He made our time there feel simply magical as he presented an array of delightful bar treats on our table turning our afternoon Spring drinks into a summer rooftop picnic extravaganza! We had an amazing time!
Dated
The attic room was assigned was pokey and awful. Absolutely dated and unpleasant.
I believe experiences differ depending on which room you are given. Some had a bath in the room and most men don’t use those. Why don’t they ask when a standard room is booked.
The food was inedible and the place is like a maze.
Staff did their best and were absolutely lovely !
Lovely food, great wine, SHOCKINGLY DREADFUL SERVICE.
This is about the Winchester Bistro which we visited for Valentine's Day 5 course pairing menu. We'd opted for one meat version and one vegan version and had high expectations based on previous reviews. However our experience fell way short of these expectations. Here is why:
1. Four days before I had visited the Bistro and requested if it was possible to reserve a warmer table (I run cold!). The very helpful Bistro worker said absolutely and he allocated us a table on the upper floor, next to a radiator.
2. When we arrived (on the day, promptly at 6pm) we found that the restaurant had given our table away to someone else and there were no tables available on the (warmer) upper floor next to radiators so we were offered a table in the emptier lower floor. The area was pretty cold so I couldn't take my coat off. I was told that the place would warm up soon. I did wonder why couldn't they have switched the heating on earlier?
3. The server was lovely. In fact everyone was super helpful and attentive (at least initially). Our first course and drinks to go with this course were served within 10 minutes of us being seated. We both really enjoyed this course's food and wine.
4. The next course was served incredibly promptly; literally as our plates were cleared, the second course food was served. However, I was given the meat version even though the restaurant knew who was having which option. And we did not receive the accompanying drinks until we asked, by which time my husband had finished his two mouthfuls of soup (served in the tiniest bowl I've ever seen!). I really loved my salad but had waited for the drink to be served to start to get the full experience so it wasn't really a warm salad anymore!
5. The restaurant then took nearly an hour to serve the main course and, again, I was served the meat course (by the same server to whom i'd previously explained I was vegetarian when she served me the fish soup!). The wine was served 10 minutes after we received our food. so we were half way through our mains by the time we got the wine. However we both really enjoyed our main courses.
6. For the next pudding course, we both received our drinks nearly 25 minutes before the food. My husband's drink was Le Lanson which looked completely different from the (delicious, well balanced) version I'd been served with my first course. His drink was cloudy and had an overpowering smell of herbs. There was no detectable champagne in it and we think that he was served the mixer and the restaurant forgot to put in the champagne. It was pretty horrible. His drink was also going warm by the time his pudding arrived.
7. My pudding - again served in the tiniest bowl - was a chocolate pot with cranberries, pistachios and pomegranate seeds. However, although the chocolate mix tasted nice, the pistachios were stale and the pomegranate seeds were missing. I was also starting to feel incredibly hungry because the portions were so tiny and there was so much wine being served. I toyed with the idea of ordering some chips but realised that, based on current service, they would likely take 2 hours to be served so we gave up! For the record I'm a very slim person and eat a small to moderate amount of food but the total volume of food served so far would fill 1/2 a main dinner plate, which for me was not enough to balance out the 4 glasses of wine we'd already had.
8. The cheese course was served 20 minutes later and drinks were served soon after, so no 30 minute wait for the accompanying wine. This was a really good course.
9. Finally we were served some little hand made truffles which was a lovely surprise and really helped stopped me from feeling as hungry as I had been!
10. Overall the food was of an excellent standard and the wines matched perfectly and, apart from the awful second Le Lanson, all drinks were of a really good quality. However, the meal was served over 3 hours which I feel was too long. Also the wines that were supposedly to accompany the courses were served 15-25 minutes earlier or later than the courses so that by the time we received the food and wine, either our food was cold, had been already eaten or the drinks had started to go warm.
CONCLUSION: This was our first time eating in the Bistro at the Hotel du Vin and, based on this Fawlty-Towers-ish experience, we wouldn't be in a hurry to go back. It's a shame as the chef clearly knows how to make great food which is rare for vegan food. However the servers need to pay more attention to the lower floor as everyone around us were waiting for their meals. We watched in horror as one table was served it's main course when there was no one sitting at the table, since both people had gone to the loo. The servers just left the food to go cold on the table! That is shocking service. So the poor service was not just us having bad luck, but clearly a symptom of a wider issue.

Heart felt thanks for the wonderful celebration of life event organised for my mother, Patricia. The email communication with Kristyna was clear, friendly and informative. The room looked lovely as we entered and my mum would have loved every moment. The afternoon tea was super generous and the waiter service excellent. We ended up staying the night. The room was spotless and breakfast the next day was such a treat. Cannot recommend enough- thank you 🤩
Restaurant
Food very poor. Obviously was off day
Starters, parsnip soup....lukewarm and small portions, not on a plate, no bread.
Mains. Steak and fries, steak so small, nothing to write home about. Chips, a small little basket of them, warm.
Main, turkey dinner, very poor, only preformed looking turkey with thick gravy over it. Again was not warm, plates all cold. Vegetables; unrecognisable over cooked to burnt. Roast potatoes, warmed up from whenever. Like little bricks. This dish was sent back. Sea bass, probably worst ive had. Overall all not good and for what they charged, very poor food, presentation and service. Waiter was very apologetic. Second turkey order was more edible, but still they were all very poor choices on our part.
Weve eaten there before and at that time was pleased.
Quality food, service and surroundings!
8 of us went to the restaurant for Christmas lunch. Fabulous service, quality fixed price menu and lovely atmosphere and surroundings.

Just trying to speak to someone is Night Mare
Just trying to speak to someone is a night mare , I have tried 2 of thier hotels been on hold for a long time told by automated system that eryone is to busy to answer and I cant even get to speak to reception. I then tried there team contact line which was even worse . I understand that the interenet is the way to go but to be honest if you cant be bothered to answer the phone then the rest of your servcie must be equally bad. I have stayed with them before and I do not normally write bad reviews but the fact that you are uncontactable is very very frustrating. I know its a radical concept but Come on Guys get someone to actually answer the phones you may even get more business !!
Great chain of lovely hotels
Always a pleasure staying, dining and meeting at HDV hotels. It's great to find a small chain where evert hotel feels individual.
Cannot find parking information
useless website. useless phone system. In fact that was the problem. Wanted to find out if the Cambridge site had on site parking. When eventually I found parking in the FAQs, just got a lazy "talk to the hotel itself" (the website is generic and so has little information for individual sites). So I rang the hotel on the number given. A quick bit of telephone pinball got me to something like "press 4 for location information about directions/parking" and when I pressed 4, I hear "if you would like parking information please visit our website on ...". So bounced from website to phone to website with no solution. Yes, of course I could "press 3 for reception" and ask them but why am I working so hard to get a simple piece of information every person who uses a car must want to know? Isn't that what the "F" in FAQ is all about? Decided not to bother with a room at this hotel.
Favourite Hotel Chain
My favourite hotel chain. Tried a few and they’re all great. Crowne Plaza have lost a regular business customer to Hotel du Vin, not because Crowne Plaza are poor at all, but because Hotel du Vin just do it better.
Hotel du Vin Clifton Bristol.

Spent our anniversary at this hotel.
All staff we encountered deserve a 5 star award.
Dining room overlooking the bridge, stunning. Our very kind waitress even found the story of the giant who created the gorge and after who you have named the restaurant.
Great breakfast and dinner.
We will return and thanks to the manager of this hotel for creating such a great experience.
Hotel Du Vin Henley on thames has…
Hotel Du Vin Henley on thames has sprung back to its original superb level after a few years of lower standards.
Whether it’s a change in management or ownership the staff are excellent, the refurbished rooms back to very high levels of comfort and functionality.
Happy to highly recommend this revamped hotel for a stay in Henley
Our local di vin sunday lunch disaster
Our local di vin 3/4 empty hotel + Bistro 3 table seated sunday lunch not good for a hotel that has no receptionist has in None on a sunday!
After waiting 35 minutes in reception Duty Manager "MIKLOS VERES" Appeared when I asked for the pad to place my car registration reply was
You cannot park in our empty hotel for sunday lunch as we have reservations at 6pm my time was 1.35pm plus a hotel with 4 tables used ?????? In the restaurant "really"?
Ok so we are locals been coming here with our company's workers for 10yrs the first time I have been told that a 1hr dinner for 2 probably $120

And Head office at Di vin and like "BoB Hope" said THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!😉😄
Very poor
I booked afternoon tea to celebrate something special with my in-laws who travelled especially to London for the occasion. The booking was made two months prior, a confirmation email two days before the booking, only to receive an email the day of to say they weren’t doing afternoon tea. Very poor show.
Better than Crowne Plaza or Hilton.
My favourite hotel brand. Not been to a shabby one yet.
Good chain of hotels
Stratford on Avon
Chain rarely puts a foot wrong - we've tried a few.
Thanks to Mary in the Brasserie helped us with an early breakfast
Just what the dr ordered
We recently stayed at the hotel du vin Wimbledon for our “minimoon”. We found our room to be everything we wanted it to be. The bed was comfy, room service was prompt and the staff were polite. We only had breakfast at the hotel but there was lots to choose from and indulge on.
Would we return - definitely.
Best Bristol City Centre Hotel
I’ve stayed all over Bristol for work, and this has been the nicest stay by far. Rooms are clean and well finished, even for a standard room they’re a good size, and the bathroom is really quite impressive. Will absolutely stay again.
