Warning - you lose £1200 if you have a crash that’s not your fault
My partner had a moped smash into him. Hiyacar took £1200 immediately from our bank account as we hadn’t bought the excess waiver. We couldn’t get much info about the insurance claim. Then a year later we’ve just been told the insurance company found in the moped’s favour. So we’re £1200 out of pocket for something that wasn’t our fault. We had no opportunity to speak with the insurance company ourselves or defend ourselves against the claim. You should always use the excess waiver which basically doubles the cost of each hire.
Such a disappointing experience. As someone who doesn’t own a car we rely on short term car hires. It’ll be Zip Car all the way from now on.

I've used the service OK a couple of times after Getaround left the UK. Recently I booked a car for a holiday and the owner cancelled at the last minute because (he said) Hiyacar owed him money. So I booked another car. When I returned it, the owner noticed scratches and (with my agreement) reported them to Hiyacar. Although I had paid for premium insurance, they said I must pay in full for any repairs. Then they sent me an invoice for over £2000 with no coherent explanation (even though this was more than they claim is needed for the repair). Their communication is terrible - they tend to reply to messages in the middle of the night (UK time) and often don't answer my questions properly. Not worth the stress

This company offer an excellent service that on the whole works very well. However this time they for some reason believe I've gone over the daily mileage of 450 miles per day. They're investigating so I need to give benefit of doubt. Other niggles were non working AC, when the vehicle is advertised as having it. It was no fun sweltering in traffic on the m4. Also the car was pretty dirty upon collection.
Avoid! Terrible customer service experience. You will see from other recent reviews that there’s a suspicious trend for adding fees after the rental. The cars are also really dirty on collection. Find another car hire option!

Everything went well with HiyaCar. I conveniently picked up a Toyota Aygo, near my home. Customer Service was excellent and once I got the gist of auto-lock I was away in a lovely clean car, without any glitches
I'm very disappointed to report that Hiyacar's systems enable dodgy car owners to scam customers.
Long story short, during the checkout process the Hiyacar app looked like the checkout process had completed successfully, but the mileage reading hadn't actually been captured. The car owner then gleefully rinsed me for £56 of excess mileage that I didn't incur. I have put this, alongside evidence of the journey to Hiyacar but they have taken no responsibility for the faults in their system and the fact that the owner is clearly running a scam using their platform.
I've been a regular customer for 4 year and have never encountered such issues. Peer to peer hires rely on a measure of good faith and it is incredibly disappointing that Hiyacar will allow their platform to be exploited in this way, leaving drivers completely vulnerable. I can only advise you to bear this in mind before using their services.

Great way to hire for a short period of time. Very easy!
This company is a scam. They will charge you for their application fee and then tell you that you cannot pass it thereafter and that the fee is non refundable. They will also give you a bunch of excuses that they can’t accept documents as it’s a third party provider that does their checks for them. Bullshit.

I hired my car and over the course of 3 months the clutch went from good to nearly gone, the bumper was damaged, it got a fuel leak, an oil leak, and the front mounts needed replacing. The cost of repair was more than the value of the car, however they do not insure any mechanical damage, although when you sign up you’re led to believe you’re covered with additional insurance. You also have 24hrs to inform them something they bite you with when you attempt to use the insurance. Apparently they offer cash settlement but no such offer in my case because I’d previously asked about the insurance claim process for a fuel leak which a neighbour had spotted and then had gone away, it had been overfilled by driver returning it. When the same issue reappeared (spotted by a hirer this time) I tried to claim at this point and was to told take it the garage and then get back to them whilst at the same time being told they don’t cover a fuel leak, I did anyway as was suspecting bigger issues, the clutch and steering wheel were getting stiff and I’d noticed it was squeaking over bumps. The quote for repairs were significant, but all the usual signs of bad driving (clutch, front mounts, bumper) however they then said I was a fraud because I previously mentioned I may have a potential fuel leak spotted after a previous hire but not within 24hrs. This turned out to be a very minor repair lo the breather pipe and I even offered to exclude it from the costs. In time it was on hire the only driving I did was taking it to get petrol when the car was returned without being filled up (often halving the earnings which are minimal) and something you have to realistically sort of with the hirer themselves due to the admin fee being twice what the fuel would cost, unless you want a bad review. You can’t let this slip because then the next person doesn’t fill it up and the problem continues. Car now sold for little more than scrap and Hiya advising I take legal action. The support was painfully slow (10 minutes for each vague response) probably designed to test your patience which it did and then became their justification to delist the car. This is a loss making activity in which you are the puppet from which they can take a cut without sharing any of the risk however the insurance and Hiya fee significantly outweighs the owners fee 2/1.
I expected wear and tear but you get people who drive round the clock to wales, loading the car up and then racing back to avoid late fees. In return for your £20 you’re expected to meet the person before, run through checks and then when returned check the vehicle over and identify any issues within 24hrs, even if you do you’re left whistling in the wind. Worse you get called a fraud and the live chat agent deletes your account without permission and blocks you.
I hired my van with Easycarclub before and should have learned my lesson then.
Signed up charged nearly ,ten pounds only to be told they can't verify my address when I have given all of the correct information requested and now they are refusing to refund me,

My first hire was a lovely well maintained clean car from a friendly owner. Second was a car owned by Hiyacar which was grubby, but OK.
On the third we had a puncture on a dangerous busy road. Shockingly Hiyacar customer service do not know how to handle a breakdown - first telling us incorrectly to contact the owner, then keeping us waiting on for an HOUR whilst the customer service agent was trained by a colleague on how to call the RAC!
On return we were told the damage was our fault and Hiycar have charged my credit card £195 for a new tyre. This contradicts their website which states costs from damage where nobody is at fault (e.g. puncture) are shared equally between between owner, Hiyacar and renter. Hiyacar even add their own administration fee to repair costs!
I complained, but Hiyacar did not even acknowledge the main points in my email. Sadly, it is clear from the response that Hiyacar is a company that does not care about its customers or making improvements to its service.
It is a real shame as the peer to peer concept is great but unless you like to be stranded on the roadside I'd strongly recommend a getting a proper hire car from a reputable firm. AVOID!

Following several emails, I discovered that Hiyacar actually charged for TWO replacement tyres yet are unable to show any evidence of tyre damage on the second tyre.
They finally offered a measly £5 + £15 credit in compensation for their poor customer service, yet continue to refuse to refund the incorrect £195 damage charge. Hiyacar have not been in touch with me after my initial TrustPilot review although their response here said they would.

I needed a car for just a few hours the next day. I was given two options with different prices and cars. The car owner was super polite and the car was terrific. I had a meeting run late which meant I was a little late returning the car. I informed the owner ahead of time and he was very accommodating.

Extremely disappointing experience with Hiyacar. Paid a verification fee, but their system failed to complete the process, leaving me unable to access the service. Despite multiple attempts to resolve the issue, customer support was unhelpful, dismissive, and outright refused to escalate my complaint.
Under UK consumer law, a refund should be issued when a service is not fully provided, yet they insist on keeping the payment without delivering what was promised. This is completely unacceptable, and I’d strongly advise others to avoid if you value transparency and fair treatment.
Additionally, their customer service ‘manager’ refused to escalate my complaint beyond them, with 5 separate requests. The individual even told me to get legal advice, which felt like a threat. I am baffled a company with service like this has managed to survive so far, teams like that will drive it into the ground.
