Be careful guys,

Car was ok but when I arrived, couldnt get the petrol cap to open despite pressing the button. I immediately cancelled and they are refunding me but very unnerving and in bleak contrast to the excellent service of dearly departed Zipcar - my previous car sharing app of 20 years with no problems. They seem to be going downhill and struggling to maintain a safe service.

An absolute farce

An absolute farce. It took ages to register in the first place because the app wasn’t working properly. Booking was relatively straightforward although the car information was incorrect (said it was parked in a completely different town).

On arrival at the car for my booking I couldn’t get QuickStart to work. I was then informed by chat that QuickStart had been withdrawn and my booking was being cancelled! Why I couldn’t be told this upon booking, and before I was charged, I have no idea! On the plus side the chat function is usually very helpful. But I won’t be using again.

I was trying to register an accont and it was a total confusion! I gave all my details my proof of residence, photos front and back od my driving license and also a selfie!
Still that could not get me an account. This situation it’s very tricky and I’m concerned about my personal details given. Be aware.

I used to genuinely like this company

I used to genuinely like this company. They were professional, polite, and everything initially ran smoothly. Unfortunately, there was one major issue that they failed to address properly.

They provided me with a car that had a serious steering fault. I typically collect their vehicles to drive outside the city and on the highway. At speeds over 100, the car would pull hard to the left, which is extremely dangerous. I reported this issue immediately and clearly explained the safety risk involved. I was told the problem would be checked and fixed.

However, when I received the same car again a few weeks later, the issue had not been resolved. I raised the concern again and emphasized that this was a serious fault that required proper mechanical inspection. I asked for confirmation or proof that the car had been sent to a mechanic. Instead, I was ignored, and I was simply told that the mechanic had said the car was fine.

It was clear to me that the issue had not been properly diagnosed, particularly since the steering problem only occurred at higher speeds, which could indicate alignment, geometry, or other underlying mechanical issues. At that point, I refused to drive any of their vehicles until they could prove the car had actually been inspected by a qualified mechanic. I was told they would get back to me, but they never did.

As a result, I stopped using their services altogether.

About a year later, I decided to give them another chance and attempted to use their service again two weeks ago. However, my account was suddenly blocked, with a message stating that I needed to verify my account again, despite the fact that they already had all my up-to-date documentation on file.

When I contacted customer support, they failed to clearly explain what the issue was. Instead, I received vague, inconsistent responses that did not address the situation properly or provide any meaningful clarification.

Hiyacar, you need to HEAR your customers.
Zipcar had the same issue. They started nice, and then they started to ignore their customers. I gave them the same feedback: you need to be customer-orientated, hear-out your customers, stop ignoring us or you will go out of business. Where is Zipcar now? buried under all the negative feedbacks an complains they themselves decided to ignore and bury away...but Avis will tell you it was a strategic move yadayada. It was a FAILURE because you decided to ignore your hero, the customer...

Hiyacar, you seemed to be even nicer than Zipcar but your ignorance of important notifications form your customers are just the same....

It is frustrating as a driver to have to deal with a car that was reported an unfixed, our fleet team has taken this onboard and is working on improving the policy and the process to make sure this is fixed for all drivers on the platform delivering good and reliable cars.

Regarding the verification error you have received, we are pleased to say that this has been fixed now and we welcome you to reach out and he your account reverified, to explain why that happened, we run an automatic check periodically just in case there's been any changes in circumstances like new points or offences or even a change in the address.

Be careful hiring a car from this…

Be careful hiring a car from this company. They charged me 100 pound for 60 pound parking ticket. If you get a ticket they will charge you extra 40 pound extra saying admin fee with out letting you appeal or see where you got the ticket.

Thank you for your review, we're really sorry you incurred a PCN during your booking and we perfectly understand the frustration of being charged for a PCN as well for an admin fee.

We want to emphasize that, both the PCN process and admin fee are transparent, and listed on our website, as well in our terms and conditions that can be found in the rental agreement provided to drivers before the booking starts.

Regarding the PCN, Hiyacar doesn't have the authority to appeal the PCN, the only authority is the PCN issuer, feel free to contact directly with the details provided. If successful we are happy to provide a reimbursement but we don't have a way to make an appeal because we haven't issued the PCN.

We also have an article on the website where we explain why we charge an admin fee as well, I hope this helps. Thanks for your review again, we're here to listen and improve.

Rubbish Customer service.

Rubbish Customer service.
They do not have a hotline to call, often if you have problems on the road, you need to go thru their bot to get to a human assistant by TEXT via their app. And trust me it's not instant.

Quick to take your money but not to give it back

Have been a regular user of this app for a couple of years and previously had good experiences. However, this week I have made two bookings - one Hiya car branded car, one private car - which have both been accepted and then cancelled. I have since been informed that this is because both car's have been removed from the app - yet Hiya still allowed me to make the bookings, and both the bookings were accepted. This would not be such a serious issue, if they did not immediately take money from my account when they accepted the booking which were cancelled shortly thereafter. Now, I'm hundreds of pounds down in my account while I wait 3-5 working days for my refunds to be processed (in fact, in an FAQ I was sent by one agent, it says it could be up to 10 days!!), and no longer have the money to make the booking that I need to make! After being allowed to book two ghost cars I'm now also questioning if I can trust that any of the cars on the app are still active. In the past, customer service has been very responsive and helpful. Now, however, they have been next to useless. Beyond explaining why my bookings were cancelled (since no information was initially provided), they have simply said they understand my frustration but that I will simply have to wait for my refunds (which I hope they actually do process!!). One agent even seemed to suggest I was somehow at fault when I have clearly been screwed over by failures in their systems, saying that I should message before making bookings - but then immediately back tracking to say this isn't necessary with the Hiya branded cars, and not acknowledging that allowing the booking to be accepted and only then cancelling is a problem with their system. Surely, if an owner has been banned, they should not be able to accept a booking. All feels very fishy. In any case, there has been no offer to try to resolve or compensate the inconvenience caused to me, for example by allowing me to somehow book a car using the money already taken from my account, or help me find some other solution to a problem that is in no way my fault. Very disappointed.

We're sorry for the initial cancellation, the car has been de-fleeted and we cancelled the booking with two weeks and half before the start of the booking, we think this is reasonable time to search for another car. Our payment provider, as stated on our website, is processing refunds for confirmed bookings in 3-5 working days, it's a standard process and we cannot push that faster I am afraid.

Regarding the second cancellation, we're truly sorry the owner has been unreliable, their car has now been suspended, while we search for better ways to improve this process, unfortunately we cannot control how an owner responds at times but we can control how to make this better in the future.

I got into a situation with them where…

I got into a situation with them where I had to pay £700. I paid it off and now 5 months later out of nowhere they’ve taken £700 from me again without any warning and are not returning my money back. I’ve provided all the evidence, bank statements showing payments I’ve made. This is crazy. Why would you even attempt to take the money 5 months later???

Very disappointing

Buggy app and poor service. I booked a car and didn’t receive sufficient location/access instructions, when I contacted the support team, I was told they accidentally cancelled my booking (the day before I was due to use the car). I found a car elsewhere.

Warning - £1200 cost

Warning - you lose £1200 if you have a crash that’s not your fault

My partner had a moped smash into him. Hiyacar took £1200 immediately from our bank account as we hadn’t bought the excess waiver. We couldn’t get much info about the insurance claim. Then a year later we’ve just been told the insurance company found in the moped’s favour. So we’re £1200 out of pocket for something that wasn’t our fault. We had no opportunity to speak with the insurance company ourselves or defend ourselves against the claim. You should always use the excess waiver which basically doubles the cost of each hire.

Such a disappointing experience. As someone who doesn’t own a car we rely on short term car hires. It’ll be Zip Car all the way from now on.

Endless stress and terrible support

I've used the service OK a couple of times after Getaround left the UK. Recently I booked a car for a holiday and the owner cancelled at the last minute because (he said) Hiyacar owed him money. So I booked another car. When I returned it, the owner noticed scratches and (with my agreement) reported them to Hiyacar. Although I had paid for premium insurance, they said I must pay in full for any repairs. Then they sent me an invoice for over £2000 with no coherent explanation (even though this was more than they claim is needed for the repair). Their communication is terrible - they tend to reply to messages in the middle of the night (UK time) and often don't answer my questions properly. Not worth the stress

Also the car was pretty dirty upon collection.

Avoid — or be charged scam fees

Avoid! Terrible customer service experience. You will see from other recent reviews that there’s a suspicious trend for adding fees after the rental. The cars are also really dirty on collection. Find another car hire option!

Everything went well with HiyaCar

Everything went well with HiyaCar. I conveniently picked up a Toyota Aygo, near my home. Customer Service was excellent and once I got the gist of auto-lock I was away in a lovely clean car, without any glitches

A safe space for scammers...

I'm very disappointed to report that Hiyacar's systems enable dodgy car owners to scam customers.

Long story short, during the checkout process the Hiyacar app looked like the checkout process had completed successfully, but the mileage reading hadn't actually been captured. The car owner then gleefully rinsed me for £56 of excess mileage that I didn't incur. I have put this, alongside evidence of the journey to Hiyacar but they have taken no responsibility for the faults in their system and the fact that the owner is clearly running a scam using their platform.

I've been a regular customer for 4 year and have never encountered such issues. Peer to peer hires rely on a measure of good faith and it is incredibly disappointing that Hiyacar will allow their platform to be exploited in this way, leaving drivers completely vulnerable. I can only advise you to bear this in mind before using their services.

This company is a scam

This company is a scam. They will charge you for their application fee and then tell you that you cannot pass it thereafter and that the fee is non refundable. They will also give you a bunch of excuses that they can’t accept documents as it’s a third party provider that does their checks for them. Bullshit.
