Unexpected post-rental charge despite unlimited kilometres

UPDATE: now there is a back and forth where Hertz say it is the travel agent (Auto Europe in this instance) and the travel agent say it is Hertz/Thrifty. Ridiculous this is coming up to a month now.

I rented a car from Hertz Autohellas / Thrifty in Hersonissos, Crete on 20 May 2026.

My booking voucher stated that the rate included “Unlimited Kilometers” and the rental terms also listed the mileage policy as “Unlimited mileage”.

After the rental, a further charge of €31.63 was taken from my bank account. The receipt I received does not clearly explain what this charge relates to, so I have contacted customer support and asked them to review it.

I am disappointed by the lack of clarity around the extra charge, especially as my booking stated unlimited kilometres. I will update this review if the matter is resolved or refunded.

Hertz Car Rental Naxos Island, Greece

Hertz Car Rental Naxos. Today, 12 May, I dropped off at the airport having had the car for 13 days, of total satisfaction, everything concerning the car and the gentlemen meeting me at the airport upon arrival and the easy and fast drop-off again at the airport. Firstly, comparing offers I had a very competitive rate, lower cost per day than many. I highly recommend Hertz Car Rental Naxos. And, if you fly Olympic (is Aegean) there is an attractive discount offered 😃

Evitez Hertz à l'aéroport d'Athènes

Hertz à l'aéroport d'Athènes est à éviter, le personnel est désagréable, la voiture que l'on vous remet est en mauvais état. il est impossible d'obtenir une facture papier au retour du véhicule...que des désagréments.
Et ce n'est pas une question d'incompréhension, je parle couramment le grec.

If I could give them a ZERO

If I could give them a ZERO, I would. Worst leasing experience I've had. Once they got my deposit there was no communication whatsoever, misleading time lines (they delayed my car by 1.5months) and when you ask your agent for assistance they tell you to do things yourself. An absolute disgrace of a company. Stay away.

The worst leasing experience I’ve had.

Until recently, I was a customer of Ayvens, with whom I had absolutely no issues. Hertz offered a seemingly better deal, which in reality turned out to be misleading — a lower initial price to attract you, and then they make their money through overpriced extras.

The service is disappointing. The car was delivered with only one key and in poor condition (worn-out, low-quality floor mats), which is unacceptable for a professional leasing company. In addition, servicing is carried out at locations that are far from convenient, creating unnecessary hassle in day-to-day use.

A clear example of their pricing policy: I was quoted an excessive €620 + VAT just to install a rear-view camera.

Overall, my experience with Hertz has been negative, and I would not recommend them, especially when there are clearly more reliable alternatives in the market.

Η εμπειρία μου με την Autohellas Hertz, παρά το αρχικό ζήτημα που προέκυψε, εξελίχθηκε τελικά με τον καλύτερο δυνατό τρόπο.

Παρότι παρουσιάστηκε ένα λάθος που οδήγησε σε φορολογική επιβάρυνση, η εταιρεία διερεύνησε σε βάθος την υπόθεση, εντόπισε την πραγματική αιτία και ανέλαβε την ευθύνη που της αναλογούσε, προχωρώντας σε ουσιαστική αποκατάσταση μέσω αντίστοιχης έκπτωσης στο μίσθωμα. Ο τρόπος διαχείρισης του θέματος έδειξε επαγγελματισμό, σοβαρότητα και πραγματικό σεβασμό προς τον πελάτη.

Ιδιαίτερα θετική εντύπωση μου άφησε το after sales support, το οποίο ήταν άμεσο, ξεκάθαρο και αποτελεσματικό. Σε μια αγορά όπου η υποστήριξη μετά την πώληση συχνά υστερεί, η συγκεκριμένη εμπειρία ξεχώρισε και ενίσχυσε την εμπιστοσύνη μου προς την εταιρεία.

Με βάση τη συνολική διαχείριση και την τελική έκβαση, θα συνιστούσα ανεπιφύλακτα την εταιρεία σε όποιον αναζητά συνεργασία με επαγγελματισμό και υπευθυνότητα.

STAY AWAY! 850 EUR “deposit” never refunded

I rented a car from Thrifty (Autohellas) in Chios, Greece (Booking.com reservation no. 620795395). At pick-up they took 850 EUR on my debit card as a “deposit”. I was told it would be released after I returned the car in good condition. I returned the car with no issues and the staff confirmed this, but the 850 EUR has never come back to my account.

My bank investigated and issued an official signed and stamped statement: the transaction was processed as a completed SALE (“AUTOHELLAS – SALE – 850.00 EUR ≈ 42,278.30 TRY”), and there is no refund, reversal or cancellation from Autohellas/Thrifty at any date. Pre-authorisation of this type is not even possible on my debit card.

Despite this, Autohellas/Thrifty keeps telling me the amount was “released” and is “no longer under their control”, and they refuse to provide any proof of a refund. I have now had to file complaints with European consumer authorities. If you are considering renting from Thrifty/Autohellas in Greece be extremely careful because you may never see your “deposit” again.

I am always trying to book a rental way in advance in order to get the best deals, so when I received a voucher from DiscoverCars I used it to book a car with Hertz, only to have it cancelled a few days later with no excuse!
Really disappointed and realised Hertz is not trustworthy.

Extremely Disappointing Experience with AutoHellas!

I had a very frustrating experience with AutoHellas. From the beginning, there was a lack of transparency regarding what was included with the vehicle.
Critical information about essential components such as charging cables was not clearly communicated, forcing me to figure things out on my own.
This created unnecessary risk and uncertainty before even taking delivery of the car.

Customer service was unhelpful when I raised these concerns, and I was effectively told that my issue would be passed to their legal department simply because I wanted clarity and a fair resolution.

This approach felt dismissive and unprofessional.
I expected a reputable rental company to provide complete, accurate information upfront and to support customers rather than create legal hurdles. I cannot ever recommend AutoHellas based on my experience.

I am a gold member. Terrible serviceand paid top whack…

I am a gold member and paid top whack for an upgraded car and nearly £200 additional insurance. Collection of the car took over an hour and the staff were unhelpful. I got a puncture last night and it is now 13.20 pm and and still waiting to hear when it will be fixed. Communication is awful and there is no information in the vehicle nor pack as to how to deal with this situation. Also no spare tyre in the boot. Very poor.. I've wasted a day of my holiday.

This was shocking and humiliating. The Hertz desk agent was rude from the start – first trying to push a €600 SUV when we only needed a small car. Later, when we booked a confirmed €200 small car through Booking.com (confirmed by BOTH Booking and Hertz, and already charged to my card), she refused to honor it. She shouted at us, saying we “went behind her back” because she wanted to make money off her overpriced offer.

Then her colleague joined in, and both of them shouted at us, telling us it was our fault for not booking directly with them. They made it clear we would get no car at all. It was Saturday evening, Booking did not answer the phone and told us they would only get back to us the next day. We couldn’t possibly sleep in the airport, so we had no choice but to rent from another company.

All this while, the exact model we booked was sitting in the Hertz parking lot. Whether or not those cars were allocated, the way the staff chose to handle the situation was outrageous: no respect, no solutions, only aggression. To make things worse, right after we left, Booking still showed our car status as “in trip” — meaning the car was actually allocated to us, yet Hertz staff never even looked at our reservation.

In the end, I lost money, wasted time, and started my vacation stressed and angry — all because of the abusive and dishonest behaviour of Hertz staff.

For such a large company to let employees like this be the first point of contact with customers is disgraceful. Totally unprofessional, disrespectful, and humiliating.

GREAT service from Vasilis at Hertz (AutoHellas) Chania, Crete, Greece

I landed at Chania airport where, despite being the only agent at the desk and facing a long queue, Vasilis from Hertz immediately recognised my Gold Plus/Five Star membership. He managed my car rental with remarkable efficiency, professionalism and warmth, even offering me a choice between two available cars. His service was outstanding, and I am truly grateful to him.

Rhodes airport July 30th Scammers& liars

Rhodes airport July 30th - August 6th.The worst car hire I have ever experienced. Chose Hertz as expected them to be honest
Robbed me Euros 850 for "damage" on rear bumper. We have the photo top prove it! I went back to the car and wiped the so called damage away with a wet finger. The arrogant lady, just claim on your extra damage policy, they will refund you. I dont need all this cheating hassle Told me we have emailed you pictures from the start and end. Not true nothing received.

I waited with my family for three hours to get the car

I waited with my family for three hours in the terminal for the car I ordered. A Peugeot is not a substitute for the BMW I booked. We had to eat in the airport without knowing when the car would arrive. When I finally got it, there was no fuel. I had to waste more time finding a gas station in a foreign country.

The car provided was an Audi Q1, not the BMW I ordered. At least it was in the same class, but it was the lowest trim I have ever seen. It felt stripped of every feature possible. I rented an Audi Q1 from Europcar two months ago, and it was a completely different model.

I chose Hertz because I believed they are the largest rental car company in the world. My experience felt like renting from someone with two cars in their parents’ garage.

Hertz-Skiathos-Airport ... best service!

Hertz-Skiathos-Airport: Themis is very professional & helpful. I did a lot of recommendations only because of him. He ist the face of Hertz-Skiathos. He speaks different languages and welcomes his Hertz-Guests in the right T-shirt (Italy, Austria....) :-)
As long as Themis is there, I will recommend Hertz. THX

Absolute disgrace they steal your money…

Absolute disgrace they steal your money by telling you you haven’t put enough petrol in the car at the end of your use and unless you have photographic evidence they certainly don’t take any and charge you €30 for the privilege. Have hired many cars from many companies and disgusted with this company I will never use again. I think I can only call it theft. Staff are rude when you try to explain and basically what they say goes haven’t even bothered getting back to me when I took the complaint even higher so it’s an all over company thing I assume what a disgrace.

I have rented from Hertz in Greece/Έχω νοικιάσει αυτοκίνητο από την Hertz στην Ελλάδα.

I have rented from Hertz abroad multiple times, and after returning my rental car, my deposit was not refunded. It worked smoothly once—in Ireland—but in Lithuania, Latvia, and most recently in Greece (Thessaloniki), the same issue occurred (or should I say went wrong?). There is no one to contact or find to request a refund. There are barely any ways to file a complaint, only through the website, which is entirely in Greek. Ugh, ugh, ugh—you would think you’re dealing with a reputable and reliable company. I know better now: never Hertz again! I feel robbed.
Έχω νοικιάσει αυτοκίνητα από την Hertz στο εξωτερικό πολλές φορές, και μετά την επιστροφή του ενοικιαζόμενου αυτοκινήτου μου, η εγγύηση μου δεν επιστράφηκε. Μία φορά πήγαν όλα καλά—στην Ιρλανδία—αλλά στη Λιθουανία, Λετονία και πρόσφατα ξανά στην Ελλάδα (Θεσσαλονίκη), συνέβη το ίδιο πρόβλημα (ή μήπως πρέπει να πω δυσάρεστη εμπειρία;). Δεν υπάρχει κανείς να επικοινωνήσω ή να βρω για να ζητήσω επιστροφή χρημάτων. Υπάρχουν ελάχιστοι τρόποι να υποβάλω καταγγελία, μόνο μέσω της ιστοσελίδας τους, η οποία είναι αποκλειστικά στα ελληνικά. Απαράδεκτο! Νομίζεις ότι έχεις να κάνεις με μια σοβαρή, αξιόπιστη και γνωστή εταιρεία, αλλά πλέον ξέρω καλύτερα: ποτέ ξανά Hertz! Νιώθω ότι με έκλεψαν.

Location d’un véhicule dangereux chez HERTZ
Client fidèle de Hertz depuis de nombreuses années, j’ai récemment réservé un véhicule pour une semaine. Malheureusement, cette expérience a tourné au cauchemar, tant sur le plan de la sécurité que du service.
À mon arrivée, l’accueil fut peu coopératif. Le véhicule fourni n’était pas le Renault Grand Scenic que j’avais réservé, mais une Dacia de type fourgonnette vitrée, dans un état déplorable. Selon le personnel, ce modèle était “similaire”, ce qui est clairement discutable au vu de la différence de gamme et de valeur marchande entre les deux véhicules.
Le véhicule présentait de nombreux dommages non répertoriés sur le document de prise en charge. L’intérieur était très sale, avec de la terre sur les sièges avant et arrière. J’ai pris des photos pour me protéger d’éventuels litiges, ce que le représentant sur place a balayé d’un revers de main, se contentant de me dire de rendre le véhicule dans le même état.
Un danger manifeste sur la route. Le pire est survenu après seulement 1 km : le système Line Assist s’est activé brutalement, rendant la conduite instable et dangereuse. Même après désactivation, le volant donnait des à-coups vers le bas-côté, mettant en péril notre sécurité. Nous avons été contraints d’annuler toutes nos visites prévues durant notre séjour, ne pouvant circuler sereinement.
Service client inexistant. J’ai tenté de joindre le service client sans succès. Plus de hotline téléphonique : uniquement un chat en ligne totalement inefficace, avec plus de deux heures perdues pour des réponses creuses ou automatisées.
Au moment de la restitution, j’ai signalé la dangerosité du véhicule. Le personnel n’a manifesté aucun intérêt, démontrant un mépris flagrant pour la sécurité des clients.
Conclusion amère
• Mes démarches pour obtenir un dédommagement n’ont abouti qu’à des réponses tardives et de mauvaise foi sans aucune véritable prise en compte de la situation vécue.
• Le service client de Hertz s’est gravement détérioré, reflet d’une entreprise en difficulté ayant perdu près de 30 % de ses effectifs ces trois dernières années.
• Le parc automobile proposé par Hertz à Tenerife est d’un niveau “low cost” indécent, totalement déconnecté des prix pratiqués.
Exemple concret : vous réservez un Renault Grand Scénic à 466 €, mais on vous remet une Dacia Jogger usée, présentant même un défaut de direction rendant la conduite dangereuse, alors que la concurrence vous propose une Peugeot 5008 neuve et conforme à la mise en ligne pour seulement 239 € la semaine.
HERTZ, c’est définitivement terminé.
