Review: After three years of responsible business with Equitable Bank’s reverse mortgage team, I was appalled by their recent conduct. They pressured and intimidated my guarantor—who had supported me throughout the process—causing her to withdraw from signing the renewal agreement. This was not just unethical, it was strategic: Equitable Bank used this tactic to justify raising my mortgage rate from 3.8% to 9%, nearly tripling my monthly payment from $3,461 to $5,363.29.

This is not customer service—it’s exploitation. Their actions reflect greed, dishonesty, and a complete disregard for the well-being of their clients. I strongly advise others to think twice before trusting this institution with their financial future.

We initially had a rough start with an advisor who didn't seem to care much. However, we then transferred to Stephanie, and she really helped us immensely throughout the process. With a regular mortgage, you borrow a lump sum of money and make monthly payments to your lender to pay it back. Part of your payment goes towards the principal (the amount you borrowed) and part goes to paying the interest. Your equity grows, and the balance of what you owe goes down over time.

With a reverse mortgage, you borrow money from the lender, based on the amount of equity you have in your home. The lender may send you the funds from the reverse mortgage in one lump sum payment, a series of monthly payments, or some combination of those. But no matter how the money gets distributed to you, the lender adds interest each month to the balance you owe (the principal). That means your balance goes up over time, increasing the amount you have to pay, and you have less and less equity in your home.

I would like to thank Glenda for her assistance in processing my reverse mortgae. I am a retired mortgage broker and as such familiar with the product. Glenda ensured the process went smoothly up to the underwriting. I would suggest that you advertise that this product is also available to purchase a home, something I had to confirm before starting the process. My only other concern is that there was further documentation requested from my lawyer by your underwriters after he was told the file was complete.
