Great
I would just like to say a big thanks to Alison who was taking my blood in Johnstown, after 30+ blood donations, this was the gentlest ever, I barely felt the needle. Thank you for trying to do your job the way everyone should! Thanks
Terrible Service
I am keen to donate blood and have made 3 appointments but so far haven't been able to because:
Dates and times offered are very limited
2 Appointments I have booked were cancelled.
I drove 30 miles for my last appointment and arrived to be told they had just cancelled it.
Cross gates church
Cross gates church
After waiting 6 months for the appointment, arrived early, was told they were running late as staff hadnt had their lunches! Told to come back, 5 mins later recieved a text cancelling the appointment! Waste of time all round, no wonder theres a blood shortage, has put me off rebooking.
Darlington Donation Center
I visited the Darlington Donation Center and was immediately greeted by a smiling and friendly nurse.
I was made to feel comfortable and at ease.
The whole experience was well managed and quick.
All of the Staff were both cheerful and helpful.
Gave blood this afternoon and I just…
Gave blood this afternoon and I just wanted to say how lovely the nurses are. All very professional and always make you feel special for giving blood. This is my six time I’ve given blood now and go to many different area around portsmouth to fit in around my work. And I have to say they are great! And always very thankful
Have visited three centres
Have visited three centres - Canary Wharf/Westfield Stratford/Eastlea school, all of which had excellent nurses and excellent staff. Honestly so lovely and great at explaining the process. Thank you
Booked appointment back in October
Booked appointment back in October. After last 3 had been cancelled due to staff shortages. When i got there so much messing around. Then i was told i couldnt give blood even though i had 6 pints of water before going. My mum was a nurse for 40 years. I told her the advise i was given last 2 times ive been. She told me thats complete bull. My doctors have no problems taking blood tests for my thyroid.
Their app is rubbish. When you call to reset you never recieve the email. Been going 5 years wont bother now.
Help people
Blood Donor team are excellent and I gave mine in Birmingham and they look after you well.
What a waste of my time
What a waste of my time. Got there with time to spare (after rushing from work )spend 30 minutes waiting for them to have a tea break,to have to answer health questions since being a child (can't think on the spot) only to be rejected because i hadn't drunk enough water although I'd had plenty of fluids throughout the day. I definitely won't be going through the process. I'll keep my blood thanks.
Terrible
Terrible. Completely wasted my time. Unsure I’ll donate again.
Patient aftercare is nonexistent
Once they've taken your blood, they won't care about you afterwards.
I just gave blood - and was told that my donation wasn't accepted. No further information but to call the generic number. The people on the phone are of no help and was told that someone from the medical team will get in touch. 3 weeks have gone still no contact, they've also suspended my account. I rang up again, and still no help and was simply told they'll push the query again. This whole experience has just given me a lot of unnecessary anxiety and frankly it's not worth donating in the future anymore.
Contact with service via online or by…
Contact with service via online or by phone very poor. Recently made a complaint which was dismissed by text as they don't have time to deal with it. Suggested I contact them later!!
I have given over 80 pints of blood but…
I have given over 80 pints of blood but recently the whole service has gone to pot. I have been cancelled the last 3 times. The last time I was actually in the building and offered to wait but was told I wouldn't be seen as they hadn't had their teabreak!! I was told that they always cancelled the 5.30pm slots so to make another time but I work and leave at 5 and my nearest donation place is over 3 miles from my home. Needless to say I no longer give blood which is a shame as there is no reason other than their attitude!!
Poor service
Poor service. In the old days the local facility where I live was open all day and you could walk along, just turn up and give blood. Now I’ve got to have a logon, book a specific time and turn up at the exact time. I live in a city and my nearest facility is four miles away, No wonder I no longer give blood. What a sadly diminished service it now is!
Website/App could do with some TLC
The website/app could do with some updates, as it's a bit hit or miss how well it'll work.
However, their phone support are lovely people, if you want to book an appointment when the website is being troublesome.
The service in the blood donation centre's has always been amazing for me, very polite staff and pretty efficient.
Website / app very poor
I am a regular blood donor and the whole experience of donating is fine. My issue is with their online services. For some reason I can't seem to log onto the app or my online account on their website. I clicked on the password reset link but received no email. I then ring their helpline and am told my issue had been passed to the relevant team and someone will call me. 9 days later and still waiting for a phone call!!
Absolutely shocking service.
Can’t believe I’m already leaving…
Can’t believe I’m already leaving another negative review. Got an email inviting me to donate at a specific place and date. When I use the link it says there are no available appointments. Honestly I responded within moments of the email. This is just wasting my time and enthusiasm. I am now one more bad experience away from just deleting my account.
I've booked for this coming season
I've booked for this coming season, to give blood. It's a way I thought I might be able to honour my mother who was a lifelong blood donor to the NHS.
(I wasn't allowed to attend my mother's funeral for her final journey, due to exploitative behaviours of a very close family member. I've got no grave to visit now nor place to be able to lay flowers for my mum, so the idea came to me I might donate blood knowing instead. In knowing that it was something she life long supported and that was very important to her.
She had lots of badges she had earned, over the many years of being a keen regular blood donor. She was always very proud of what being a regular blood donor meant. Something like a hundred pints of blood throughout her life I think it might have been, that she donated. Maybe more. I think she got tp a point where there were no more badges to be give out. I think it is something she would have liked me to do too, in honour and memory of her as her loving son.)
I've booked an appointment for coming months and will see how it goes. Booking was very easy to do. Just been waiting in the many weeks since making my decision, for my appointment slot to come up in my local area. I hope in her memory to regularly give blood to help save lives as well from now on.
Fairly straightforward donating.
No issues donating, staff have always been very friendly. Plenty of drinks and snacks before and after. The rooms tend to be well ventilated with aircon nowadays. The only thing that can be annoying is sometimes even if you do get there early, there can be fairly long wait times, which, its giving blood at the end of the day, so everyone's experience is going to be different and take a unique amount of time. The booking system is pretty decent online.
A shameful accusation and ban
In gratitude for a life-saving operation that saved my dad’s life and gave him an extra 30 years, and later operations that improved the quality of his life, I started giving blood soon after I turned 18. In my ’30s, in response to the IMPORTED CONTAMINATED BLOOD SCANDAL, I upped my game and for some years donated plasma and platelets monthly. At about 50 I took a long break, I’d had enough, but a few years ago they asked me, now an OAP, to start donating blood again. I was a bit surprised but happy to do that.
In early 2020, after a trip to Thailand, I was wrongly turned away because some areas carried extra risk but, as it turned out when I checked, not them, that did not apply to where I’d been, so I was able to donate a week later. But they had let me make a wasted trip, no skin off their nose. During Covid, when my local centre was unavailable, I did a 60-mile round trip to another centre, at my own expense of course.
In October 2021 I had a mild eye infection, Specsavers (working for the NHS) checked my eye and advised me to buy over-the-counter drops to clear it. I did that and thought nothing of it. A few days later, as I went to give blood, I ticked the relevant box to say what had happened. That meant I had to discuss it with a nurse.
In her office she told me that because of that minor treatment I couldn’t donate. Her attitude was awful, she displayed zero empathy for my wasted trip, again, and just couldn’t care less. As the penny dropped I felt angry. I stood up, said nothing, did nothing, I simply left her office and slammed the exit door to the unit, not her office, as I left. I was fuming for the rest of the day.
To make matters worse I had never (ever) been sent the health-check questionnaire in advance, as should have happened, due to a clerical error on their part.
I later learnt that the nurse said I was ‘aggressive’, at which I took offence. There were various lengthy phone calls and email exchanges seeking to resolve this matter, but I eventually made it clear that I would not resume donations unless the aggression accusation was withdrawn. Their response was to ban me!
I did make a complaint to the relevant ombudsman service and my contact there was very understanding. She told me that they couldn’t pursue my case due to their enormous workload. But what she did tell me was that based on what I told them, they did NOT consider my behaviour to have been aggressive and thought I was NOT at fault.
In my view, the nurse made a shameful baseless accusation, and the blood transfusion service, unsurprisingly, closed ranks and chose to back her not me. I find their ungrateful contemptuous response truly staggering, a real kick in the teeth. They want your blood but you are not allowed to display human emotions when provoked.
What Putin is doing in Ukraine is aggression, I was just angry at their incompetence and bad attitude.
