⚠️ SCAM ALERT – Aca Rent is dangerous, dishonest, and should be shut down

We were victims of what seems to be a repeated and well-planned scam by Aca Rent in Albania. Like many others, we booked our car online with a confirmed price but upon arrival, they refused to hand over the car unless we paid an additional €300 for insurance. They made it very clear: no extra payment, no car. This was not optional, and not previously mentioned. It was pure extortion.

Unfortunately, that was just the beginning.

🚫 The car they gave us was in terrible and unsafe condition:

The brake system was not functioning properly, putting our safety at serious risk.

The dashboard was already warning that the car required urgent maintenance.

Only one of the three rear seatbelts existed — completely unacceptable and illegal.

After the experience, we looked up reviews and found countless reports describing the exact same situation:

Hidden charges added upon pick-up

Unsafe vehicles in poor mechanical condition

Aggressive staff pressuring tourists to pay for unnecessary insurance

Lack of accountability, professionalism, and transparency

It’s clear this is not a one-off — it’s a deliberate scam strategy targeting tourists.

🚫 Avoid Aca Rent at all costs
🚫 They are scammers, not a real car rental company
🚫 Book only through trusted international companies or well-reviewed local agencies

If this review helps at least one person avoid being scammed like we were, then it’s worth it. Aca Rent is a disgrace to Albanian tourism. Do not fall for the “cheap price” trap, you’ll end up paying more in money, time, and stress.

Contratti non firmati da parte loro, ti fanno fare le foto al ritiro, poi si basano solo su quelle. Al nostro ritiro pioveva tantissimo, con il bagnato i graffi esistenti, ed erano tanti...non si vedevano bene, abbiamo chiesto un posto riparato e non ci volevano accontentare...Al ritorno hanno controllato per mezz ora e dovevamo documentare con le foto fatte. Volevano a tutti costi addebitarci dei danni inesitenti. Mio figlio avvocato è intervenuto subito e si sono calmati...

Noleggio di 1 settimana presso aeroporto di Catania. Ottimo prezzo, staff cordiale (abbiamo parlato con Francesco, molto disponibile e competente).
Sono molto trasparenti nel fornire tutte le informazioni necessarie per il noleggio e la gestione delle eventuali polizze. Ritornerò volentieri da loro!

We used Discovercars to rent a car in Corfu. They advertised ACARENT and it had an overall high rating on their site. We selected the pickup time and were told someone would meet us at the arrivals. When no one showed up at the pickup time we phoned them and they said they were on their way. Still they did not show, when we phoned again they were incredibly rude and refused to come, instead telling us to come back at 11.00 (12 hours later) and they would rent us a car. I have since contacted Discovercars to complain. We finally got a reply after days, with ACARENT lying and stating we arrived late. To my surprise, without any evidence, Discovercars has sided with ACARENT and refused a refund.

For these reasons I would avoid Disocvercars and ACARENT. Dont be fooled by cheap prices.

L’agence est très professionnelle, avec un service rapide et efficace. Un grand merci à Youssef pour son accueil chaleureux : il a été très serviable, disponible à tout moment et toujours joignable pour répondre à nos questions. Cela fait vraiment la différence. Je recommande vivement cette agence pour vos locations de voiture !

Entreprise sérieuse et professionnelle et Mr Youssef était facilement joignable et serviable, la voiture était propre et nickel.

Изключително некоректни. Резервирах кола от тях на о. Корфу. Полетът беше късно през нощта. Заявих късно взимане на автомобила срещу заплащане. Изпратих номер на полета, както те поискаха, за да може агентът на компанията-доставчик да го проследи. Кацнахме със закъснение и никой не ни чакаше. Имаше над десет агенти на други ренталски фирми, които предоставиха техните коли на клиентите. С нашия полет пътуваха още една група, която също не можа да вземе автомобил от същата компания-доставчик. Няколко часа по-късно същата фирма предложиха същата кола за същото време на двойна цена. След редица имейли не предоставиха никаква компенсация за неспазената уговорка. Да не споменавам неудобството и стреса посред нощ на летището.

I wish I had of read these reviews before we rented, i am so surprised that the aggregator VIP cars gave them such a good review. When we returned the car, they identified a very small chip in the bumper (about the size of a grain of rice). So small that even if we saw it we would not have thought anything of it (its an older car and that is just wear and tear). They charged us 400EUR for it. TOTAL SCAM

Booked car hire and printed car hire voucher which clearly stated pick up time of 23.00 hrs
When arriving at airport no one was there to greet us
Telephoned company who said they were shut
Therefore had to find our way to Kavos ourselves
Phoned them next morning to say we would get a bus to the airport to pick up and told us they had cancelled it despite me having a copy of agreed pick up time on my voucher
Offered us a car at 150 euros per day instead
I asked where our car had gone overnight which they didn't answer
First time ever let down by a car hire company
Luckily found a helpful local firm called Alphas and got a car for 150 euros for rest of hol

If I could give ZERO stars, I absolutely would. This scam of a company completely RUINED our holiday in Albania by extorting nearly €700 from my husband for so-called “damage” that NEVER even happened. That’s right—€700 for NOTHING.

When we landed in Tirana at 11:30 PM, we were handed an ancient, beat-up car covered in scratches, clearly hoping we wouldn’t be able to take proper photos in the dark. And surprise, surprise—on return, the so-called “manager” showed his true colours: aggressive, rude, and downright hostile. He had the audacity to tell us we should have exchanged the car during the day! Are you kidding me?! What absolute nonsense!

This company is a total disgrace. Dishonest, predatory, and shameless. Avoid them at all costs unless you want your trip turned into a nightmare.
P.S. Unsurprisingly , there is not a single response to any of the negative reviews.

Absolutely the worst car rental experience I've ever had. This company is a complete scam and should be shut down. They rent out old, heavily used cars with over 45,000+ km, covered in scratches, dents, and previous damage. But the trick? They hand over the car still wet from washing so you can't properly inspect or notice the damage until it’s too late.

Then comes the scam — they fabricate damage charges after you return the car, just so they can steal your deposit. It’s all a setup. No matter how careful you are, they’ll find an excuse to keep your money. It’s dishonest, unethical, and completely disgraceful.

This operation is a stain on Albania’s growing tourism industry. It’s a shame, because the country has so much to offer — but businesses like this exploit visitors and damage Albania’s reputation.

Do yourself a favor: rent elsewhere. This company is not worth the risk. Shame on them.

Did not turn up & unable to get in touch via phone

Don’t book. We were delayed an hour so they didn’t turn up. Even though we gave them the flight number for them to track and paid the out of office collection price. When I rang from the airport as we couldn’t find them. Sleepy guy on the phone said he’d get us 8am next day 7 hours after we landed. Lucky we had a transfer bus still booked we could get on. Don’t book these. I’ve hired a lot of cars abroad and never had this ever happen before. In 20 years of hiring cars and this is is the worse one I’ve ever experienced.

Propongono prezzi esageratamente bassi attraverso broker di rent ma poi cercano di caricare penali per rifarsi.
Volvano dai 50 a i 70 euro perché secondo loro io non posso andare 2 h dopo il previsto ritiro (durante la mattina feriale) e quindi il ritardo al RITIRO va pagato!!!

Acarent Flughafen Heraklion.
Es war der reinste Horror. Gebucht über Check 24, Acarent wollte einen wesentlich höheren Betrag. Extrem unhöflich Behandlung,schließlich Betrag bezahlt, da Shuttlebus, nicht am Flughafen, kein Ausweg. Keine Informationen dass der Kia nur startet,wenn man die Kupplung ganz durchdrückt, Info, es läge an der Lenkradsperre, ich müsste nur das Lenkrad etwas bewegen. Führte zu großen Problemen, Auto nicht wieder starten können, Nervosität, Schaden am Auto. Nette Griechen klärten mich später auf. Nach dem ganzen Verhandlungsdisaster wollte er mir auch noch eine Vollkaskoversicherung verkaufen mit entsprechenden Drohungen. Dieses Vorgehen war mir bekannt, habe es nicht gemacht.
Eine furchtbare Erfahrung, die ersten Tage auf Kreta waren vermisst.

Vorsicht, Abzocke und Betrüger!!!
Laut Vertrag sollten wir 10 Euro bezahlen, weil wir das Auto außerhalb der Öffnungszeiten abholt haben. Die freche Mitarbeiterin sagte uns, entweder zahlen wir 40 Euro oder wir bekommen das Auto nicht.
Als wir das Auto zurückgaben, begannen sie sofort mit der Inspektion vom Unterboden und entdeckten 6 Zentimeter langes Lackschaden. Wir mussten 360 Euro dafür bezahlen, weil wir keine Bilder vom Unterboden bei der Abholung gemacht haben und konnten nicht beweisen, dass nicht wir diesen Schaden verursacht haben.
Sie zwingen die zusätzliche Versicherung abzuschließen und haben uns erst nach dem Anruf von Flughafen abgeholt, aber es sind Kleinigkeiten.
Wenn ihr auf Idee kommt, dort das Auto mieten, mach bitte die Bilder vom Unterboden.

Booked a vehicle due to low prices from the UK for 20 days travelling Athens Greece. Had to wait 1 1/2 hour at the airport as nobody was at the meeting point. Flight on time with no issues but no car. After calling the company ( it was obviously the lady was asleep came at the meeting point and took me at her rental place ) she claimed there was not a flight number. As experienced in renting this information is optional from the 3rd party site I booked the car. I usually rent from Athens airport 3-4 times per year from different companies depending on the prices. Returning the vehicle and checking my bank app I realised from my bank that my credit card of 1000€ was actually charged instead of locking the amount as she told me (as all rental companies do) so when the car is returned they check the vehicle and charge if necessary. The vehicle was returned the same as I took it. No damage not even a scratch. While on the phone with the lady im at the airport for my departure she started making up her own verbal contract claiming after 15 days we charge the guarantee among with other nonsense which this was not mentioned when i signed the contract. She started making up stories about people's characters etc (embarrassing and discriminating me) claiming evebody are stangers and we don't know you and everybody else. Never been told at any point and time all these changes. Obviously been charged from my bank the expenses for this amount and the lady insisted that it's ok its the same thing it doesn't bother anybody. I'll wait for my deposit to be returned and act legally as required. Unrealiable, unprofessional full of lies, I'm am shocked. I warn everybody to stay away from this company if I can claim it as such. There is NO star option. One star is not by choice.

Achtung, Abzocke!!
Bei Abgabe des Autos sagte der sehr unfreundliche Mitarbeiter uns wir hätten zwei Macken verursacht und sollten knapp 1000 Euro dafür bezahlen. Genau von der Stelle hatten wir natürlich kein Foto zum Beweis gemacht, dass wir es nicht waren (eine Stelle die man nur sah wenn man sich bäuchlings auf den Boden legte und unter das Auto schaute). Eine Übergabe bei Abholung des Autos gab es nicht, es wurden also keine Schäden gemeinsam aufgenommen.
Wir haben uns dann beschwert und musste am Ende dann "nur" einen Kratzer zahlen, 365 Euro.... wir haben den Schaden definitiv nicht verursacht (der Kratzer war auch eindeutig schon sehr alt)...für uns fühlte es sich sehr nach Masche an, der Kratzer wurde wahrscheinlich schon des Öfteren mal abgerechnet...also macht Fotos von JEDEM noch so kleinen Kratzer, ansonsten wird es am Ende teuer!!

I've had bad rental experiences before, and I'm glad I came across others' reviews this time – they've likely saved me a lot of stress.

There are numerous reports of aggressive staff behaviour and unexpected charges. It’s concerning how many people mention being pressured into paying more once they arrive. This doesn't seem like isolated incidents. When a deal looks too good to be true, it usually is.

If you still decide to rent here, take extensive video footage of the car – all around, underneath, and even under the bonnet. Documentation is essential to protect yourself. Better yet, do yourself a favor and cancel the booking. Spend a bit more with a reputable company and avoid the risk of getting scammed. Stay safe and travel smart!
