I signed up for an Esso fuel card via NCASS to support our seasonal catering business. Everything worked fine during the summer, but once the season ended and we stopped using the card, I was hit with an unexpected £54 non-usage charge.
I had made it clear from the outset that our business was seasonal. Had I been told about this fee, I never would have signed up. Apparently, it’s buried in the terms and conditions, but it was never explained properly at the time of joining.
I raised a complaint in March and was told I’d be refunded. Since then, I’ve followed up multiple times and have been given every excuse under the sun: bank holidays, annual leave, and most recently, that the refund has now been rejected by their finance team and is “under investigation.”
It’s now June, and I’m still waiting. It really feels like they’re just hoping people are too busy to chase them up. Overall, this experience has been extremely disappointing — poor communication, no accountability, and zero urgency. I’d strongly advise small or seasonal businesses to think twice before using the Esso card.
They promised a charge of £18 per year, no minimums, and have charged me 6 times pulling direct from my bank. Customer services tells me I must talk to my sales person Russell Horton and he doesn't answer calls or emails. Avoid at all costs!
Discussing customer service. This is not worth it. The hassle and embarrassment it causes. Twice my Wex card has declined and be retained. As marked as stolen. The customer service people are useless and basically told me it’s down to me to contact Esso direct and tell them the cards not stolen. Well isnt that what a criminal would say. Steer clear not worth it.
