To be honest I don’t really tend to write reviews, however I felt the need to express my gratitude for Ben’s professionalism and astute manner when dealing with my party wall award. Great service & at a reasonable price

My neighbour instructed Ben Mackie back in 2018 for a party wall survey regarding loft conversion. At that time we agreed to using their surveyor under shared agreement. We found Ben very respectful, professional & knowledgable when carrying the survey of our property & had prompt receipt of that report.

Fast forward to 2024, I looked up Ben again finding Ben & Alana (The Party Wall Collective) as it was my turn to have loft conversion & internal works. My neighbour kindly agreed to go the ‘shared agreement’ route for PW survey, so TPWC issued PW notice, arranged & completed survey visit of neighbour’s property and issued report within the fortnight. Very prompt, professional and at a very reasonable price compared to others.

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Ben & Alana, as quick to respond throughout the process & very knowledgeable.

I would agree with the negative reviews…

I would agree with the negative reviews here! We had a party wall issue last year and Ben Mackie was recommended by our neighbors surveyor. We called him to discuss the issue and see if he would act on our behalf! Half way through the call he abruptly said 'i will call you back' he never called back! We tried to call him again but he didn't answer... .waste of time and probably a blessing in disguise that we didn't appoint him. I would like to add in response to your reply Ben that I was given your number by Mark Omodio last year! The telephone conversation was last summer for your information. Your response just clarifies how unprofessional you are, so thanks for that, and do not worry I have not lost sleep over this, simply warning people about companies like yours. Your reply says it all! It's also interesting how many companies including yourself do not respond to emails or telephone calls, yet are very quick to respond to a negative review.

I am not sure how you got my mobile number as it is not advertised on my website. I have had a couple of poor reviews - luckily these come from serial 1-star reviewers like yourself, so I take these reviews with a pinch of salt. You have waited nearly a year to write a 1-star review because I did not return a phone call. I am sorry for the hurt that this must have caused and continues to cause.

Speedy, great value for money and great advice!

Ben came and did the party wall agreement for our extension, and we were in a bit of a rush as a builder had suddenly became available. He was able to move quickly, offered us advice and was great value for money. We couldn't recommend the Party Wall Collective more highly.

Great to work with! Efficient and professional!

We had the pleasure of working with Ben and Alana on our extension, which required the services of TPWC to put together a party wall award with the two neighbouring properties.

Being new to building work, we needed someone who could delicately assist us through the complex process, and Ben and Alana were just that. They were able to progress matters at pace, maintain an open dialogue, work in tandem with the neighbouring surveyor, and put together the award quickly (and comprehensively), despite the time pressure of our build beginning.

We’d highly recommended TPWC as a transparent and ethical surveyor, and will return for any party wall matters that arise in the future.

I was recently put in touch with Ben…

I was recently put in contact with Ben for some advice from which he went out of his way to help me and where he could not advise in full, put me in touch with a more suitable expert relating to boundaries. Ben took the time out of his day at no fee to help, review some documents and talk over the phone. I know who to use for any Party Wall guidance or service.

Do NOT ask Ben for his book or for his…

Do NOT ask Ben for his book or for his advise. Do not send him you build plans nor your neighbour's surveyor name. I did this after I was impressed with his blog and Linkedin article about rogue surveyors. He asked for the above information and I simply trusted him. But unfortunately after trying to take his own advise and ask all the correct questions before signing a contract with him ( because it is not easy, and almost impossible to exit a contract with your surveyor) he said that I just have to sign, and that he is not happy to run a commentary. He also to insult me used a leverage in the fact that I sacked previous Party Wall Surveyor ( who was recommended by my builder and sacked by the builder himself as he took responsibility when she served notice to the wrong person with wrong info).

On Friday the neighbour's surveyor ( who was delaying us for nearly 2 months ) has advised my to be new surveyor NOT to take business with me as Ben told him that I signed contract with him, and that I was difficult, and that he, Ben, has rescinded the contract. This is not only not true because I have a long thread of emails to proof that Ben was pressurising me to sign contract, (but I would not sign as he was not answering my questions) but also put me in a difficult position as no surveyor wants to take my business, hence Ben's chilling words when I told him over the phone that I will not take his service , he said " good luck finding a surveyor"

It is unfortunate that Party Wall surveyors are not regulated, could work and take charge of your most precious asset, your property built and improvements, with no qualifications. Worth noting that I also became aware of secret fee pacts between surveyors and the like.

I must say that Alana , Ben's PA, is really nice , helpful and sympathetic. But unfortunately Ben is ultimately the boss and things goes only his way. I really thought that Ben was different and better Party Wall surveyor, but after what he did on Friday I feel cheated and betrayed.

I had an email, where I was told that the only way is to use my neighbour's manipulative surveyor, this is to force me to accept my neighbour's conditions. What was supposed to be a simple straight forward Party Wall agreement was complicated by me reaching for Ben's free advise.

You have written 18 reviews and they are all negative, so your review comes as no surprise. I really did want to help you, and as you know, I spent considerable time giving you advice over the phone and by email. I really feel quite sad that I spent so long trying to help you. I believe I could have helped, but you didn't allow me to.

There are so many inaccuracies in your review that are unfair, but in the end, it would take too long to address them all.

You say I told you that the only way was to use your neighbour's manipulative surveyor, but this is wrong. Your neighbour is lovely, and wanted to have a shared surveyor, but you refused. He was even happy to let you choose the surveyor, but you didn't. I cannot make sense of this. Your neighbour's surveyor is lovely too, and I am confident he will diligently handle matters.

The idea of me pressuring you to sign a contract is particularly offensive. I have little care for money, and as you know, I chose not to work with you (this is in writing). I was happy to lose money as for me, the privilege of working 'together' goes both ways. I am lucky for every client I have, but equally, I need my clients to feel lucky to have me, and I work hard to achieve this.

You have a habit of attacking businesses with negative reviews. This is likely to cost me money in lost work, which obviously affects my family and young children. It is hard trying to make it in life, and I wish you had seen the good work I had done for you. TPWC is far from perfect, but we try our best. I am pleased you found Alana helpful - she is amazing.

You blame me for complications regarding your build, but I think you should take some responsibility. You have:

1. 'Sacked' your first surveyor (they actually stepped aside).
2. Labelled your neighbour's surveyor 'manipulative'.
3. Outlined 'secret fee pacts' which I am not aware of and has nothing to do with me.
4. Stated my actions left you feeling 'cheated and betrayed'.

I have lots of emails from you that are emotive and blaming of others. I do not believe people are working against you. I think people want to get about their daily lives with minimal fuss. Trust me, I have enough on my plate, just like everyone else, and this is why your conspiracy theories fail. We don't know you, and have no interest in making your life difficult.

I don't think I ever spoke to you in a 'chilling' way. I am genuine, and when I wish you the best of luck, I mean it. If you wish to read this review in a chilling voice, you are welcome to do so.

Knowledgeable and professional

Ben & Alana were amazing and really helpful with our party wall requirements. We had numerous interest and TPWC managed the whole process while being really easy to deal with and very professional.

Experienced Surveyor and value for money!

Great service!! They are very knowledgable and take their time to explain the process which can be quite complicated for a first timer. When I had issues with both neighbours dissenting, they explained that I could use an agreed surveyor to save costs.

I cannot recommend Ben at TPWC highly enough

I cannot recommend Ben at TPWC highly enough. Ben stepped into what was a quagmire of a situation in an ongoing dispute, having had a previous surveyor let us down. Unlike my previous experience of party wall surveyors being extremely fee (rather than results) focused, he was a complete tonic, knowledgeable and strategic in his evaluation of the situation. He has a professional and friendly manner and was extremely balanced in his approach, looking at a situation from multiple angles. He is focused on reaching an amicable and speedy settlement and has proved to be a god send. I’d recommend him and his team for any one needing the services of a party wall surveyor - they are experienced, professional, pragmatic and straight talking - a rare combination!

Unprofessional and egotistical if you dare to ask questions about liability

The PWC contacted us when our neighbours embarked on a rather large extension and advised that our 100 yr old party garden wall was at risk of damage during the works in which they had to dig new foundations. We engaged in the process and agreed to let works commence as long as they were being reviewed by PWC in an independent capacity. Ben surveyed the existing condition of our properties and we signed to give our permission for works to progress. During the works, only a few months later, a few meters of the garden wall crumbled. Without inspection in person, by photo only, Ben wrote to us advising that the cause was unlikely to be the works. We were baffled and queried how this determination was possible by photo only and we also questioned ownership of the wall and agreed to the suggested zoom call.
The response we received was egotistical and unprofessional. Ben did not like that we had asked such questions and said he would not be our surveyor because we thought him biased and that he had been pre-judged. We were blown away by this reaction. Apparently we should have just accepted that we needed to pay for the remedial works without identifying the cause or ownership of the wall! We should not have asked questions or protected our interests! We have not responded because we will indeed appoint our own surveyor.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. I appreciate there is damage to your garden wall, and I understand this will likely be a stressful time. I do believe you have omitted important information and misrepresented the facts.

On the 3rd April I wrote to you with a four point plan. I proposed that we needed to:
1. Establish the cause of the damage.
2. Decide on who is responsible for repairing the wall. We also needed to establish who owned the wall.
3. Arrange a zoom meeting, or a site visit.
4. I recommended a very good bricklayer who could attend site with me.

I stated in this email that I was able to share important evidence in the zoom meeting, and that this would include videos and photos. My hope was that we could progress matters, working together.

On 19th April, I had not heard from you, so I decided to check in. You responded promptly stating that I was 'very biased' and 'not independent at all'.

I stated I would step aside as your surveyor. It is vital that when there is a dispute, all sides have faith that the dispute is handled fairly. By stepping aside as your surveyor, I allowed you to appoint another in my place, and I do hope that this will restore your faith in the process.

Some points that I need to make to give your review some more balance:

1. The walls on BOTH sides of your garden are in need of repair.
2. The section of collapsed wall is over 10 metres from where the extension was built and next to several trees and bushes. This is outside of the normal sphere of influence when it comes to damage from excavation. The excavation was not particularly deep, and the Party Wall Act is invoked if you dig within 3 metres of the wall. There is a good reason that the Act is invoked when excavating within 3 metres - because there is a risk of damage, however, you do not need to serve notice if digging within 10 metres of a structure / wall, for good reason - damage is not thought to be reasonably possible past 3 metres (there is the 6 metre rule too but that is generally for piling and much deeper excavation - even this doesn't stretch to 10 metres!).
3. The wall next to the extension has not collapsed, and indeed, you have to walk more than 10 metres past the end of the extension to get to your damaged wall.
4. The foundations to the extension had been laid many weeks before the wall at the back of your garden collapsed. To attribute this to the excavation becomes increasingly difficult.
5. Whilst the wall may be over 100 years old, I believe it has previously collapsed. There are newer red bricks which were added to the wall, where the collapse occurred, and I believe cement mortar was used. This would not have been good for the brick wall which would have used lime mortar.

I welcome scrutiny, hence why I offered a free zoom meeting. I expect my decisions and thoughts to be challenged, and I was genuinely looking forward to assisting you so that you could understand what had happened and why. I do not think you needed to say that I was 'very biased' just because I had a viewpoint that wasn't aligned with you. I take pride in being able to 'straight talk' which involves giving my own independent and honest opinion.

I understand the matter remains unresolved, and I still await contact from your surveyor. Ideally, this should have sorted swiftly and fairly, but I do appreciate a reset was needed. I am sure that whoever you appoint will come to the same conclusion as me, and sadly this will likely cost you in fees which were avoidable. I understand you will retain this review, even if it is found my actions and thoughts were correct and rational. I also see that you have only ever written negative reviews, so I take this one on the chin, and I trust my response now gives some context.

Very smooth process

TPWC were recommended by our building firm and were a pleasure to deal with throughout. Thankfully our neighbours were happy to consent, but the process, management and level of communication was fantastic. Thank you Alana and Ben.
