I was originally told about Thornbury…

I was originally told about Thornbury Nursing Services in 2001. At that time my colleagues mainly highlighted the higher rates of pay.
However I have stayed with TNS since then more because I feel the people I have met and spoken to are professional and decent people. I have had experience of many Agencies I have often felt this is for various reasons not so.
I have always felt respected and listened to through all the highs and lows Nursing puts one through.

I’ve had a very positive experience…

I’ve had a very positive experience working with Thornbury Nursing Agency. From the beginning, the registration process was smooth and well-organised, with clear communication at every stage. The team is professional, supportive, and always responsive whenever I’ve had questions or needed assistance.

One of the standout aspects is the quality of shifts offered. The placements are well-matched to my skills and often in reputable healthcare settings. I also appreciate the flexibility, which allows me to maintain a good work-life balance.

Payments are reliable and processed on time, which is essential when working agency shifts. Additionally, the consultants are approachable and genuinely seem to care about staff wellbeing, regularly checking in and providing updates.

The only drawback I’ve experienced is that there isn’t always enough work available, which can make it difficult to rely on consistent shifts at times.

Overall, Thornbury Nursing Agency is a trustworthy and well-managed agency that I would recommend to any nurse looking for flexibility, good support, and quality placements.

Exploitative Low Pay

Extremely low pay working as a placement coordinator. Placing agency nurses who are paid between £60 - £160 per hour. Which can equate to as much as £1,600 for one 12 hour shift. All billed to the NHS / taxpayer. Whilst you yourself are paid minimum wage, equating to around £70 for the entire shift. Constantly inundated with ESG inspired eLearning modules which have no relevance to the role of placement coordinator and micro mangaged to a suffocating extent. It's even frowned upon if you decide to login 5 minutes early to begin your shift, or over stay your shift by few minutes.

Our nurse pay rates are clearly published on our website and are transparent for anyone to review. Our nurses are highly qualified specialists who often travel hundreds of miles at very short notice to provide critical care when no one else can.

Regarding your onboarding and e-learning, as a responsible organisation, we take this process seriously. Our training modules are designed to ensure every new starter is set up for success and understands our standards and compliance requirements. This is an important part of delivering safe and effective services.

I found the staff to he rude

I found the staff to he rude, not helpful, they were very difficult to communicate with, i wouldnt recommend joining them. I never got cleared to work, took my money for the DBS, never refunded me, when they had no intentions to clear me for work

As reference verification is often the longest part of the process, we encourage applicants to complete other required tasks, such as DBS checks, in the meantime.

Unfortunately, the responses we received from your nominated referees did not meet our essential compliance requirements. We attempted to follow up with your referees for clarification and further information, but they were unable or unwilling to engage further with our team. As robust referencing is a cornerstone of our compliance standards, we were regrettably unable to proceed with your application at that point.

Harassment!

Currently going through the robust application/recruitment process with TNS and no exaggeration, I get at least two telephone calls a day asking when I am going to complete the process and why I haven’t already. I have already been called at 08:14 this morning. I work part time and wish to take on extra shifts in MY OWN TIME. I do not appreciate being harassed like this and despite telling them not to call they still do. After reading the reviews and hearing of the difficulties in securing shifts it doesn’t sound worth the hassle.

Best agency ever.

I started working with thornbury long time back and always enjoyed every bit of it, feel very sad to leave as i am retired but thank you everyone for your support throughout my journey with thornbury nursing agency.

Absolutely horrendous first encounter

Absolutely horrendous first encounter. Had a screening call, I am a registered general nurse and CQC registered manager with over 20 years experience in care homes to be told they would not except a clinical reference from a colleague I have worked alongside for over 5 years as my manager was no longer with the service to give one, so I was told I would not be excepted.

Due to the last-minute nature of our shifts, our workers have minimum support when on shift and are expected to hit the ground running. As a result, we have a robust recruitment process. This means that we can only place our workers in areas where we have received full clinical referencing.

Would not recommend TNS to anyone

I feel like this nursing agency is a big joke and not very helpful when you’re stuck with registration or booking shifts. I forever try to jump through hoops. They push you to register as soon as possible to meet their targets. I have over 10 years experience in speciality nursing. To register my A&E skills I had to prove that I am Hep B, hep C and HIV negative. TNS adviced me to do it through GP or current NHS employer. GP refused as it’s not under NHS merit. NHS occupational health also refused as it was not for my current post but for an agency work. TNS Occupational health were very surprised and they weren’t helpful at all and keep sending me back to my GP. I had to book the blood test privately which cost me over £100. Test came back negative but TNS would not accept the result as it wasn’t ID approved. Finally after many phone calls to TNS, they recommended a company to do the blood test through. So had to spend yet another £120. After several months I am finally registered but cannot book any shifts. There are zero A&E shifts. Majority shifts are for nurses with ICU background which I have (7 + years) but not in the past 18 months like TNS wishes. So I had to go back to my old trust to do bank shifts so I could get a new reference for my ICU skills so it could be added to my file. Now…after all that I still can’t do any ICU shifts because most of them require nurse with cough assist skills which I did a course privately. But that wasn’t accepted because I need regular practice and be referenced for. I have nowhere to practice but TNS. Also most of the clients require “been before only” staff. The rule is very strict so I have no chance in booking any shifts. TNS is not helpful with providing any support to gain more skills to then enable me to provide an excellent care for their clients. They rather the client go without the shift being filled. I would not recommend this agency to work with to anyone.

We understand that registering with a new agency can be time-consuming, and we strive to make this process as efficient as possible. Due to the urgent nature of our shifts, our workers often have limited on-shift support. To ensure the safety of clients and patients, we have a rigorous recruitment process, including clinical reference checks for all skills and areas before placing you on shifts.

Regarding your concerns about blood tests, we apologise for any inconvenience or misunderstanding. All applicants must have a comprehensive health screening to be deemed compliant to work. This requires applicants to provide evidence of their existing immunisations and results in line with the Department of Health Green Book. If existing evidence is unavailable, our occupational health provider requires blood tests to gain the evidence and maintain client safety. We understand this can be frustrating, but it's a necessary step.
