A good newspaper ruined by a…
A good newspaper ruined by a subscription method that is verging on the fraudulent. You can't cancel auto-renewal online, so I had to go through an inquisition by phone to cancel it. Having seen other comments about the Telegraph's access to bank accounts despite cancellation, I have turned off the pre-authorisation (direct debit) on Paypal.
Issue Resolved Promptly — Appreciated the Professional Response
Following my initial negative experience with an unexpected €19.99 subscription charge, I was contacted directly by Freddie Hextall from The Telegraph Subscriptions Team, who handled the situation with professionalism and clarity.
While I was initially frustrated by the lack of upfront communication and difficulty finding contact information, I appreciate that Freddie not only cancelled the subscription immediately but also issued a partial refund as a goodwill gesture, even though it was technically outside the standard refund window.
He also took the time to explain how the subscription was initiated, outlined the billing structure transparently, and acknowledged my feedback about the website's contact process — which I hope will lead to genuine improvements.
This level of personalised follow-up and accountability goes a long way in rebuilding trust. I want to thank Freddie and the team for their swift and respectful resolution of the matter.
I was charged €19.99 by Telegraph Media Group for a subscription I never knowingly signed up for. There was no warning, no prior notice, and certainly no clear consent on my part.
What makes it worse is the deliberate lack of transparency — trying to find an email address or a way to contact customer service on their website is like going in circles. It’s clearly designed to frustrate you into giving up, which is exactly what happened to me.
This kind of silent charging without consent and opaque cancellation process is deeply unethical. I expected more from a reputable media outlet — not to be tricked into recurring payments with no easy way out.
Avoid.

Beware Auto Renewals!!!!
Last year, I paid about 30 pounds for the annual Telegraph subscription. This year, it ballooned to 199 pounds. It automatically renewed to that amount, without any email letting me know this would happen. The paper gives a phone number for support, but being overseas this doesn't help me at all. They don't even offer an email. Be very, very careful with these auto renewals; if this isn't fixed to a reasonable rate I will cancel the subscription. Also know I've been a subscriber for a few years now; it's interesting how they treat their customers.
The Newspaper is ok, cancellations a pain
The Newspaper is ok, as expected, but cancelling a subscription was difficult, and even when it showed as cancelled they tried to debit my account. Fortunately I had not only cancelled but blocked further payments to The Telegraph.
Scamming on subscription
Scamming on subscription, there is no way to cancel it, though they are easily sign you up promising cancel any time.
A very facist and racist newspaper

Be careful about the £25 for free…
Be careful about the £25 for free offer. IIt is an auto renewing offer which they say 'can be cancelled at any time'. Unlike the majority of non-scammy companies, they don't let you manage the auto-renew setting in your account settings on the website or app. They instead direct you to make a phone call that is only possible during work hours. So now you have to remember to do it during a holiday period. I was also told on the phone that the auto renew was turned off. I checked a few weeks later and it hadn't been. I phoned up and cancelled rather than support this kind of behaviour.
Tech/app functionality is so outdated
Would you please introduce a way of looking up comments one has made on the app. It’s ridiculous that you have to keep an article open or go back to an article and scroll for hours to see a conversation thread. It’s 2025. Just get it done. Provide comments history and a way to organise them that is logical and simple to navigate.
And it’s all well and good asking for a subscriber number below - useless if you don’t include that under my account on the app. Get some new tech people in for goodness sake.
Beware the renewal process
Beware the renewal process. They send an email and then 14 days later take your money without sending a confirmation your subscription has been renewed. If like me you don't realise until after the 14 day cooling off period has ended, you can't get your money back or cancel your subscription until your 12 month contract has expired. My subscription increased from £39 to £199!
Excellent unbiased journalism
Excellent journalism and one of the last UK news outlets to provide an alternative to the relentless left wing dross that passes for news these days.
Dirty Subscription Tactics
Deceitful charging tactics.
I have been a subscriber for a couple of years as they offered me a good deal when I phoned to cancel.
Same with the puzzles.
Then I received an email saying my 50p annual subscription was going up to £50, so I had to phone them to get that cancelled, guess what they offered me deal but I’d had enough of their deceitful tactics to keep you as a customer but at the same time try it on.
At the same time I checked the cost of my digital newspaper subscription and it was showing as due in a week or so and was showing as £29 and I double checked my emails including my junk box to see if they’d sent me anything about the price going up, but nothing so I thought ok I’ll stick with that then.
Then whilst I was out for a meal at c.9pm at night an amount of £199 was taken out of my bank account by the telegraph with no warning or notification. Sure enough when I logged on it was showing £199 for the annual subscription.
I contacted my bank to see if they’d sent could so Nything to stop the payment going through but they said I’d have to contact the telegraph to get a refund.
I phoned them first thing the next day at 8am and asked for it to be refunded, the guy I spoke to was very understanding and actioned my request. I cancelled my subscription and did receive a refund a couple of days later.
This kind of behaviour should not be allowed, it’s a big con and I have blocked their emails and phone numbers as a result.
Warning they really just want as much money as they can get their hands on and hope you do not notice. If you want to subscribe you can phone them up ( if you can find the number) and get. Good deal but make sure you know your renewal date.
A false propaganda news organization…
A false propaganda news organization spreading hate between races and religion and trying to push UK to war with Iran with fake news.
DO NOT SIGN UP TO THE TELEGRAPH
DO NOT SIGN UP TO THIS SUBSCRIPTION
They get you in on a low price then block your reading.... tricking you into thinking your subscription has expired.
They block the page with ads to sign up to to another subscription.
They then whack you wth a £269 automated payment when you aren't looking!!
When you complain....Customer service pass you around with multiple questions like they don't know what's going on!
They say sorry you have been double charged.... but do nothing!
What a racket!
Something needs to be done about these money grabbing companies and these sneaky automated payments !!
For months they have promised to refund…
For months they have promised to refund my subscription. I signed up on Google Play and then cancel on the app. PayPal was not informed and they charged me full digital subscription. I found out much later and it has been three months and they tell me I will get the refund and nothing happens. Now they want to see my personal bank transactions to start investigating. They also will not verify that they truly made the transfer to my bank account. Stay away from this organization. They are truly corrupt!
Is The Telegraph going to scam me as it seems to do with others?
Never mind the appalling standard of journalism, the unsubscription process is just as bad. I subscribed with one click and expected to unsubscribe in the same way, but I had to phone, insert an eight number code and then be interrogated by Abdul, whose accent I found hard to understand. I ended up angrily repeating that I had no interest in answering irrelevant questions, that I would report these difficulties along with his name to every review site I could think of and simply wanted to unsubscribe. Eventually he agreed and confirmed by email. I see on this site that others have been charged over two hundred pounds after having been told they would be unsubscribed and that they have not been refunded as promised. So I am waiting with bated breath to see if they try to scam me out of a similar amount on renewal date
I was offered the £49 deal & then…
I was offered the £49 deal & then renewed at £269 !!! I rang and the guy said no worries we can refund that and get you on to £39 per year. He then backtracked after I agreed to continue and said he couldn't refund the £269. What a rip off and disgusting con they are running. ***** As a follow up The Telegraph phoned me and refunded my £269 and apologised. I'm continuing with the newspaper at £49.

Articles have been coming up ion my newsfeed. Appalling trash. Can’t even call it journalism- it is entirely fact free and has an extreme right wing agenda that it seems to push in the crudest and most unsophisticated manner. Who reads this rubbish?
Cancelled subscription and still got charged
I cancelled my subscription on 24/5 and just checked my credit card statement and realised I was charged renewal on 9/6. No way of contacting them as its out of hours.
Updated
Telegraph customer services dealt with my complaint quickly and refunded the puzzle sub of £49. I've increased stars from 1 to 3, 1 star removed as DT is offering puzzle sub for £1 and 1 for my not knowing agent disconnecting chat before they confirmed cancellation meant the cancellation process wasn't completed
