Sharp Practice
I received an initial letter asking if I knew the person referred to in the subject line. This was my father, although they incorrectly spelled his name.
I rang them and they gave me the name of my Father's cousin who had died intestate. They said they would send me a letter.
The letter included a form for me to sign. This said that they would prepare a report for me proving that I was a beneficiary. For this, they would charge 20% +VAT. This is effectively 24% of my inheritance.
I asked for the name of the Solicitor dealing with the estate and then spoke to them direct. They confirmed that I did not need to use Estates Research. The Solicitor also confirmed their fee which was a tenth of the ER fee!
I used Ancestry to prepare the report myself including the relevant certificates which took me half a day. This has been deemed acceptable by the Solicitors.
In checking progress with the Solicitors roughly 9 months later, they told me that they were waiting for a report from ER telling them who the beneficiaries are!
It therefore appears that they are being paid by both any beneficiaries who sign their form and also by the Solicitors, via the estate.
This seems very sharp practice and I am very unhappy. At the end of the process, I will be investigating this further with my son who is an investigative journalist to find out how widespread this practice is.

The time they took was frustrating…
The time they took was frustrating particularly so when they estimated a few weeks and it took much longer and at the end I would have expected a copy of a full family tree.
