DRIVO WORST RENTAL EVER

I had a very poor experience renting a car from Drivo in Rabat.
At collection, I had an issue with my credit card because I had forgotten the PIN, so I had no practical option other than to use my debit card. I was then charged an additional £10 per day for using a debit card, despite having little real choice at that point.
What made this worse is that this debit card charge was not clearly stated in the terms and conditions provided to me, which I find unfair and misleading.
The condition of the vehicle was also unacceptable. The car was handed over with the engine management light already on, a service spanner warning, and a dashboard message saying “check emissions”. On top of that, the air conditioning was not working.
When I returned the vehicle, I was told that my deposit would be refunded within 48 hours. It has now been over two weeks, and I have still not received my deposit, nor have I received any response to my email.
This experience was stressful, unprofessional, and far below the standard I would expect from a car rental company.
For clarity, this review is about Drivo in Rabat only. Please do not confuse them with Drivos, who I have rented from before and found to be professional and reliable. I have also rented from other agencies in Rabat and Marrakesh without any issues.
I would not recommend Drivo based on my experience.

They are scammers

They are scammers. They will prevent you from taking photos of the rental and then claim that you caused scratches when you return the car. They will also put in claims for thousands of dollars on what is literally just dust on the bumper. Even when insurance pays, they will try to go after you personally for more money. They are the only car rental company I have ever used that runs credit checks on its customers and they do it with the intention of scamming people who have good credit because they think it will be easier to extract money. Also, they offer discounts to first time customers in exchange for a good review BEFORE you rent the car so do not trust their 5-star ratings.

I rent SUV after arriving to JFK…

I rent SUV after arriving to JFK because we wanted to drive to Catskill Mountains. Shuttle from airport was easy and the car was very clean. Good for road trip outside the city. Everything worked well for our trip.

FRAUDS TAKE DEPOSIT

They took 200 off of my deposit for a supposed nail in the tire. First of all I’m sure there wasn’t any because I checked myself and parked in their own garage to return it. Secondly other reviews also report this fraud as they lost 200 for low tire pressure…

Title: Very Disappointed – Unethical and Misleading Practices at Drivo Newark

I’ve rented from Drivo Rent a Car several times in the past and always had good experiences, but this most recent rental at the Newark, NJ location was completely different — and very disappointing.

While waiting in line, I observed another customer speaking with what appeared to be a regional manager. The manager’s behavior was condescending, dismissive, and robotic, showing no empathy at all to a family clearly upset over their rental issue. The interaction held up the line for about 30 minutes, and the customer left saying the manager had ruined his vacation. It was a terrible first impression.

When it was my turn, the representative who recognized me from previous rentals immediately began insisting that the economy car I reserved was too small for me and my 14‑year‑old daughter — even though we only had two backpacks. After a long upsell pitch, he convinced me to “upgrade” for an extra $10 per day, claiming he was doing me a favor because it’s “usually $20 more.” In hindsight, I regret agreeing.

The worst part, however, was the billing and insurance issue. I explicitly declined their liability insurance and told the agent I would use my own primary insurance, as I always do. He nodded in agreement, and I trusted that. But later I discovered that I had been charged twice for the rental — once by my wife when she prepaid online, and again when the agent had me swipe my card twice at the counter. When I asked why, he said one charge was a “deposit” that would be refunded and the other was for the rental itself. That explanation was misleading and, in my view, dishonest.

To make matters worse, the agent never asked for proof of my primary insurance, which further suggests they added their insurance without my consent. When we contacted Drivo’s corporate office the next day, we were told to dispute the extra charge, which is currently ongoing.

In my opinion, Drivo uses deceptive and unethical sales tactics — taking advantage of tired travelers just off their flights who trust what they’re being told rather than reading through every line of fine print. The verbal explanations don’t always match the written agreements, and that’s a terrible business practice.

I will be filing a formal complaint with the Better Business Bureau and Drivo corporate. Sadly, after years of being a loyal customer, I can no longer recommend this company. Stay away from Drivo — it’s a scam.

Horrible customer service

Horrible customer service. Still waiting on deposit from February 2026. I suspect they gave me a car with pre-existing damage that was covered with snow and ice and hit my insurance with a claim. (It was late, I was tired, and there wasn't any lights in the yard when I picked car up). Shame on me for not insisting on a walk around. I'll never use Drivo again.

Fraudulent Charges & Unethical Practices – Avoid Drivo at All Costs

I had an extremely disappointing and concerning experience with Drivo that I feel obligated to warn others about.

Despite already purchasing insurance in advance and explicitly declining any additional coverage at the time of pickup, I was still charged an extra $171+ for insurance without my consent. This is completely unacceptable and feels deceptive.

Additionally, Drivo placed a $200 refundable deposit, which has still not been returned even after I brought the car back on time, in perfect condition, with zero issues. To make matters worse, I returned the vehicle with a full tank of gas (even more than what was provided)—yet there has been no accountability or communication regarding my deposit.

The situation gets worse: I had already added the rental vehicle to my personal toll pass, but Drivo charged me again for tolls along with penalties a week later. This is either gross mismanagement or intentional double-charging.

The representatives at the desk were unhelpful and dismissive, and the entire experience felt like their business model relies on adding hidden charges and taking advantage of customers.

At this point, I am seriously considering reporting these charges as fraudulent transactions and escalating this matter further.

I strongly advise others to avoid Drivo unless you want to deal with unexpected charges, withheld deposits, and extremely poor customer service.

Absolutely and unequivocally…

Absolutely and unequivocally unacceptable! I was charged for coverage that I declined after verifying my coverage with Statefarm, my insurance carrier. This action is absolutely unacceptable, and there should be no reason for such an error to have occurred. I am under the impression that this is common practice for DRIVO Rent-A-Car, and this experience has left a horrible first impression!

Terrible hire firm

Terrible hire firm.
The office is a van parked at the carpark, behind the regular hire buildings. Customers cueing sitting on the kerb. One person turns up to off hire the car and they just give the keys straight to the new one waiting, without any cleaning.
It goes pretty swift. We didn't wait too long. Ramadan it's a quiet period. I wonder what's it like during hot, busy days..
First car didn't have the drivers sun visor, radio didn't work and aircon sounded like a loud hoover. I asked for something else and they gave me a "decent" replacement, but still not road legal. No threads on tyres, dirty inside out and covered in bumps and scratches. I had to change a wheel eventually after a week. The tyre went flat. Luckily the spare was ok. After I offhired the car, they charged me £150 for the flat in the boot. Also the fella tried to blame me for a scratch. Luckily I had a good video. Don't get their insurance. It's not an insurance, but they don't explain you that. Check the car and video it before and after hire. Carefull with this firm.

UNSCRUPULOUS BUSINESS PRACTICES & CHARGES

I WAS CHARGED A CLEANING FEE THAT I FEEL WAS UNFAIRLY IMPOSED. UPON PICKING UP THE CAR, THEY COULD NOT FIND IT AND HAD ME SIT IN A TRAILER WHILE THEY LOOKED FOR IT. EVENTUALLY A GUY CAME IN, TOLD ME WHICH CAR WAS MINE AND WHEN I ASKED TO DO THE PRE-INSPECTION, WAS TOLD HE HAD ALREADY DONE IT AND I WAS GOOD TO GO. I HAD THE 'DAMAGE WAIVER' INCLUDED SO I DID NOT WORRY. UPON THE RETURN OF THE CAR, I BROUGHT IT TO THE LOT I WAS TOLD 3 HRS BEFORE IT WAS DUE AND WAS TOLD AFTER HANDING THE KEYS THAT THEY WOULD CHECK THE CAR LATER AND SAID I CAN LEAVE. SOME TIME AFTER I NOTICED I WAS BEING CHARGED A CLEANING FEE BY THEM AND ERUPTED BECAUSE BEING THE ONLY PERSON IN THE CAR THE WHOLE TIME, I ASSUMED THEY WERE CHARGING ME FOR WHATEVER DIRT MIGHT HAVE BEEN WHERE YOUR FEET ARE WHEN YOU ARE DRIVING. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED THEM TO COMPLAIN GETTING NOWHERE, AT WHICH TIME I DISPUTED THE CHARGE WITH MY CREDIT CARD. RECENTLY I RECEIVED NOTIFICATION THAT THE CHARGE WAS FOUND TO BE VALID BECAUSE I NOW FIND OUT THEY ARE CLAIMING THERE WERE PET HAIRS ON TWO SEATS AND INCLUDED PICTURES THAT WERE PRACTICALLY ALL BLACK, SHOWING NOTHING OF WHAT THEY ARE CLAIMING. THEY DO NOT SHOW BEFORE & AFTER PICTURES, NOR DO THEY SHOW CLEAR PICTURES. I FEEL THEY ARE UNSCRUPULOUS BECAUSE THEY NEVER HAD ME INSPECTING THE CAR EITHER TIMES WITH THEM AND HAVING RETURNED THE CAR 3 HRS EARLIER THAN I NEEDED TO, I COULD HAVE KEPT THE CAR AND CLEAN OUT WHATEVER THEY CLAIM TO HAVE SEEN, HAD THEY NOT SENT ME AWAY WITHOUT DOING THE INSPECTION. UPON THE PICK-UP, I WAS TOLD THE CAR WAS ACROSS THE STREET IN THEIR ADJACENT LOT, ONLY TO BE TOLD BY THE EMPLOYEES IN THAT LOT THAT THE CAR WAS IN THE LOT I JUST CAME FROM. THEY TOOK THE KEYS FROM ME AND HAD ME SIT IN A TRAILER WHILE THEY HUNTED DOWN THE CAR. THEY ARE A BUNCH OF INCOMPETENT EMPLOYEES WHO ARE PROBABLY PAID A COMMISSION FOR WHATEVER EXTRA UNFAIR CHARGES THEY CAN ADD TO THE CUSTOMERS' BILLS.

I would strongly caution anyone…

I would strongly caution anyone considering Drivo Car Rental.
I had a confirmed and prepaid reservation secured with my Business Platinum American Express card. When I arrived to pick up the vehicle, I was denied the rental because the representative claimed they were unable to run my credit report.
I maintain a security freeze on my credit for identity protection. When informed this was the issue, I immediately lifted the freeze to allow the inquiry. Despite taking immediate action to resolve the matter, I was still denied the rental.
This was a prepaid reservation secured with a major business credit card. Denying a paid customer at the counter after they attempt to comply and resolve the issue demonstrates poor policy transparency and unacceptable customer service.
If Drivo requires a successful credit inquiry even for prepaid rentals secured with major credit cards, that requirement should be clearly disclosed before payment is accepted. Leaving customers stranded at the counter is not an acceptable business practice.
Due to this experience and the disruption it caused to my travel plans, I will not be using Drivo again. I recommend others carefully review their policies before booking.
