I rented a van from the Edinburgh agency and had taken out additional insurance through an intermediary agency. I immediately felt that they were trying to sell me their own insurance.
When I gave my payment card for the security deposit, they claimed that only my last name was on it and not my first name. The person at the counter pretended to send a message to their manager and then told me they couldn’t accept it.
They explained that if I wanted to get my van without using my bank card, my only option was to take… their insurance, which cost me €500.
Unacceptable.

Avoid this car hire company
Car Hire is not located at airport (Edinburgh) you require to wait on a 30min rotating bus. They use the recognised con of suggesting it could take 28 days to refund the compulsory £1,500 credit card deposit. Produce a laminated sheet showing how you can reduce the deposit and increase insurance if your pay £60 or £80 (These were discounted from what it states on sheet). £80 was twice the cost of the car hire for 2 days! Location is in the middle of nowhere so you are stuck to get bus back when you realise the error in not booking with Avis, Europcar or one of the other reputable car hire firms. Avoid is my recommendation.

To ensure a smooth rental process, we provide information regarding our payment and deposit policies at the time of booking and on the confirmation voucher. For clarity, our standard requirements are as follows:
• Security Deposits: We require a pre-authorisation deposit on a credit card in the name of the main driver (starting from £1500).
• Debit Card Use: We do accept debit cards; however, this requires the purchase of an excess waiver package to reduce the excess to zero. UK residents using a debit card must also pass a credit check or provide proof of employment.
• Payment Security: All deposits must be made with a physical card with at least 2 months' validity. We cannot accept virtual cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or cards without visible numbers.
• Exclusions: We do not accept cash or prepaid cards.

Flight delayed so they wanted 'reorg' cost plus upgrade - was going to cost more than 200% of original hire (had paid when booked so a sunk cost) so declined hire. Didn't tell me any of this when I msg to say we were delayed. Or even when got there until the very last minute. Decided to write off the full hire cost that had been paid in full and go elsewhere as extra charges were ridiculous. They'd already shadowed the £1500 security hold before disclosing this extortionate charges. Told me on 4 Feb (&10 Feb on phone) it'd been returned. It is now 2 March and they are ignoring all of my emails. So having not taken a car they are withholding £1500 on my credit card affecting my credit rating and availability. Clearly lied that they've released it.
Pick up from Edinburgh airport a massive pain, cold & wet wait outside. They're not Edinburgh airport!! AVOID at all costs.

• Failure to Collect: Customers who fail to arrive on the day of collection are marked as a ‘No Show’ and charged up to 3 days rental. Please note that prepaid bookings are non-refundable.
Please be informed that the deposit release is initiated once the hire period ends. However, excess deposit transactions may take up to 30 days to appear in your account, depending on your credit card provider.
The deposit amount will be restored to your available funds, and your balance will return to its original state. If you do not see the deposit reflected in your account within this timeframe, we recommend reaching out to your bank directly for further assistance.

This is the worst car rental company.
Because I’ve been living in the UK for over a year, I had to retake the driving test to renew my licence here. My Colombian licence has been valid for more than 15 years, but since I’ve lived here for so long, I had to follow UK regulations.
Complying with those rules cost me over £200, because they didn’t accept my Colombian licence and my UK licence is less than a year old.
They take people’s money, charging for insurance they NEVER USE, and their customer service line is extremely rude.
Do NOT rent from them.

I would strongly advise others to be…
I would strongly advise others to be very cautious when booking with Drivalia, especially if paying in full in advance.
I made my booking on 16th February for vehicle collection from Edinburgh Airport, paying £161.79 upfront. When my travel plans changed, I attempted to cancel the booking on 23rd February — over six weeks before the hire date of Friday 4th April. Despite this, I was unable to cancel online due to an issue with their system and was told that cancellation was not possible because the booking had been paid in full.
I live in Crieff and was no longer flying in on the Friday night, meaning collecting the vehicle from Edinburgh Airport would have required an impractical combination of train, tram, and walking. This was explained clearly, but no reasonable flexibility was offered, despite the significant notice provided and the fact that I have hired with Drivalia several times in the past.
In the end, I had no option but to keep the booking and rearrange collection for the Saturday morning with help from someone else, which completely defeated the purpose of booking and paying in advance.
Very disappointing experience. I would recommend avoiding advance payment with Drivalia, or booking elsewhere to avoid being caught out in a similar situation.
