Westway Vets Fenham.
AVOID!! Took my precious rabbit as an emergency. Admitted early hours. Not interested when I rang to check his progress, through the night and day, they couldn’t wait to end the call, inconsistent information given by unprofessional staff. Informed he had passed away when someone returned to the room as they’d forgot their pen 🤬
No duty of care. Just want your money, and lots of it. Disgraceful.

Robbing Criminals
We took our cat who had injured his back end. Payed for consultation and a pain killing and anti inflammatory injection.
The vet asked to see our cat again the next morning. My wife took him and was once again charged for a consultation and more pain killers.
I have searched online for these pain killers and found identical meds but for only £8 (westway west rd charged almost £40)
I have called westway to request a written prescription but have been told they need to see our cat again first, meaning they want another consultation fee. I have researched this and discovered that they are legaly obliged to give a written prescrition for any medication that they will sell you.
I have explained this to them but they will still not give me a written prescription.
Absolute Robbing Criminals
Using your pets illnesses to bleed money from you.
I will never use this vet again.
AVOID AVOID AVOID
Wouldn’t return to Westway even if the treatment was free. Operated on my pet which caused serious complications years later, could have cost him his life, had no sense of urgency in submitting referrals. Submitted complaint, was offered compensation on the basis I sign a document to say they aren’t liable, refused to sign the document, get sent a letter telling me to leave practice. Now at a different practice and can’t believe how nice and refreshing it is, who knew taking your pet to the vets didn’t have to be a highly traumatic experience. There’s a reason there’s so many bad reviews. Register your pet at a practice that has Out of Hours and emergency as a referral centre as Westway are clearly incompetent. Avoid at all costs.
West road branch in Newcastle has to be the worst
West road branch in Newcastle has to be the worst ever, first off, asked what was wrong with my dog, of which i had already explained to admin prior to appointment and had asked for them to put it on their system so that it would save time for all concerned once the day of the appointment, female vet had no idea of how to handle a dog as she kept backing off and all my dog was wanting to do was to give her a kiss and hug, hence his tail happilly wagging away
then as she eventually came over to him, again she asked what was wrong with him, i explained and she looked around him and nowhere near to the area i had told her about
i then asked "are you are trainee" no she replied as i have been a vet for quite a few years "then please tell me i replied" "why are you looking at my dogs ears as he came in for a paw issue' she made up some bull and said " you'd be surprised as the foot and ear are all connected with this type of injury' i then replied " WHAT A LIMP"
agin they had failed me and my vet, 3rd time in a row and still charged me £210.00 for 10 minutes of looking in the wrong area
the time before that was just as bad, as they gave my dog abooster jab and realised they had given him the wrong injection as it was meant to be a painkiller injection
i should have sued them, but this practice like to lie about customers, saying that we are all unruly and very impolite towards staff
i know one thing for sure, i am always polite and i always act in a respectful manner, sadly the same can't be said about Westways
Wonderful Staff
The staff were lovely when I had to put my young cat to sleep after it developed a blood clot. They were calm patient and understanding helping me to fill out forms as I was very upset.
They treat my cat with dignity and respect explaining fully to me all that had happened. On leaving I got his fur,paw print and a lovely card and seed packet to remember him by.
Please, take the care of your animal, your money, your personal records, and your sanity, and do not use Westway Vets
Like many of the reviews on this page, we have been utterly horrified by the lack of professionalism shown by this group.
Our dog was given substandard care in November 2022, mis treaded initially by their vets at their branch in West Pelton.
Their mis treatment resulted in delayed emergency care for our dog. Following this, he was required to be hospitalised for 2 nights. Having been told that we were likely over-reacting, we were then told they could not guarantee the dog would survive due to severe intestinal haemorrhaging. Had we taken the dog home, he likely would have died.
The bill had to be chased on several occasions, but was eventually received and after being amended due to "additional" charges (clerical errors... the one thing Westway Vets are very good at) we sent the bill to our insurance company.
One month after our dogs initial treatment, we were then advised to have blood tests. We offered to pay for these at the time, however were assured that it would all be covered by the one claim and a bill would be provided. The bill was not provided at any time.
Due to issues out with our control, our insurance company took several months to pay out. In this time, Westway decided to claim for the blood tests seperately, without our permission.
This created another clerical error, sparking a second claim and therefore a double "excess" payment- a payment due to Westway Vets.
This was queried several times both in person and over the phone. On every occassion, Westway Vets confirmed that this was an error and we would only have one "excess" payment to make. This was completed in early April.
It is important to note that over the course of the 6 months since our dog received his initial treatment, Westway Vets phoned/text on several occasions.
However, over this past month May/June 2023, Westway Vets have sent three letters, within a very short space of time, claiming that we still owe a balance- despite their earlier, continued, assurances.
By the 3rd threatening legal action, we phoned AGAIN. This time the conversation was more firm and concise. During this conversation, they admitted to many errors and now claimed that they also did not have a correct phone number for myself or my partner. This for me was the final straw.
Westway vets have for the final time mistreated myself and our dog. Westway Vets will no longer be given opportunity, to not only endanger the life of our dog with their inadequate services, but over charge for services not provided and cause upset due to continued negligence.
Following a final phone call with their Practice Manager, Mark Turnbull, where Mark claimed my assertiveness was "rudeness" Westway vets were told that their services would no longer be required and that they would be being reported- for all of the reasons above.
In one final show of embarrassment on behalf of Westway Vets, I have received a letter from Mark saying that:
" A satisfactory professional relationship between client and their surgeon must be founded on a basis of trust and confidence, it is clear that this is no longer the case
We therefore give you two weeks notice..."
To be clear, Westway Vets were already told that there services were never going to be required again due to their continued negligence- both in the care of our dog and the care of our records. And while they continue to be unable to provide a letter confirming we owe them no more money- they were able to find our address to let us know they dumped us first. If nothing else, it gave me a good laugh this morning. So thanks, I guess.
They care
They actually care and even have a stray fund to look after those that don't have owners. They never PTS and have fosters for found oldies with no owners. Brilliant vets and I actually long term foster for them till rainbow bridge
Hospital treatment Newcastle
I recently had to contact the Hospital branch in Fenham out of hours to ask for advice. The person who answered the phone was very professional and helpful and I could not fault the information and manner in which my call was taken. I then had to take my pet up to the hospital and can honestly say the staff team were brilliant from start to finish. They kept in touch with me and discussed treatment options clearly and with reasoning to support the options suggested. The staff were completely lovely all through my pets stay.
People forget that to narrow down what it going on vets need to do diagnostic tests and these can be so expensive. Scans and X-rays involve sedation and anaesthetics and their patients can’t tell them where it hurts
I was fortunate to have insurance and this helped when making decisions about tests and treatment.
I cannot thank the West Road hospital staff enough for their kindness and the caring shown to my pet. Thank you so much my pet is now well on the road to recovery.
Theifs!!!!!
Theifs!!!!!
Will do anything possible to rob you! Avoid!!
I spent over £1,000 to be told my dog has an allergic reaction to a tree but they wouldn't tell me what type unless I paid over £700 more! It sounds like a joke but this is the truth, it's absolutely insane! They had a final payment yesterday as I said I'm taking my dogs else where as they have completely robbed me for the most ridiculous reasons plus their medication doesn't even work, they wanted me in once a week & didn't tell me I was paying £45 each time just to talk & have my dog seen to until a nice bill came out along with threatening behaviour!!
To top it off I have paid for healthy plan for both my dogs & they still want money for their medication which is what the healthy plan is suppose to be for, so what am I wasting money on if you're still wanting me to pay for medication?? I want a FULL refund back if thats the case. I have notes to prove my facts & if you don't give me a refund & you keep sending more threatening behaviour I will take things further!!!!
Please find somewhere else, they don't care about the animals, only about the money!!!!!
Not interested in pet - RIP OFFS!!
After being quoted a minimum of £800 for dental treatment on my dog plus another £1000 to get lumps removed and tested i decided to get a 2nd opinion as thought this price was very excessive. My dog has just had his dental treatment + lumps removed and has cost me £360. This vets is scandalous. They tried to tell me that my 9 year old cocker spaniel was geriatric and they couldnt remove the lumps whilst getting his teeth done as couldnt take the risk. I was more concerned that they were wanting to put my “geriatric” dog under twice which was not necessary. Will not be returning to this vets, not interested in the pet just making money!! So pleased i chose to get a 2nd opinion!! Avoid at all costs!!
Poor communication, lack of empathy
The vet was clearly experienced and knew what she was doing. However, a lot of complex information was given in a rush, she clearly couldn’t wait for me to leave and she wouldn’t let me call my daughter for information or call back later if I hadn’t understood something. It felt like a data dump and I was overwhelmed. I told the receptionist who asked why I was taking my daughters dog to the vet. She asked what job my daughter does and, upon being told, said, “I was in that industry and I know they work shifts. We’re open until 7pm.” The implication was that it was my own fault I hadn’t been able to keep up with the data dump and my daughter should have taken the dog herself. In mitigation the receptionist told me they’d had to put down four animals that day and everyone was quite emotional. My father died yesterday and that hasn’t prevented me from treating others with respect. I came out feeling overwhelmed, stressed and worried. I would never take my own dog to this vet
Chased for a bill 5 months after being told it was all paid
Had been with Westway for 9 years. Always fairly expensive but it was convenient and as a regular customer they always seemed to fit me in quickly for appointments, although usually at a premium.
Post Covid experience is still not great- doors randomly kept locked as if Covid is still on going etc- so often stood out in the cold waiting- this is still the case now. Its just a bit frosty in terms of customer service.
My dog was put down in Eden Hill and after contacting Westway a few times both pre and post receiving my final statement from the insurance company, I was told by Westway that there was nothing left to pay.
It seemed odd, so I contacted them a few times and was repeatedly told that there was nothing to pay and it was all settled.
Five months later I received a final payment demand, stating that they would add 10% on for late payment. I contacted them and their response was simply that the bills must have been lost in the post.
Its unacceptable to have such bad practices that it takes five months to send out a bill, especially given that it was probably typed into a till on the day and the insurance company paid out within 2 weeks.
I will go to a different vet for my next dogs and we have moved our other dog already.
Only interested in their profit margins!
We watched both our cats die slowly over several months in distress and paid around the £3000 mark for the privilege! I called in on a morning after having already paid £160 just that week for yet more useless steroids and I had one simple question for the vet but the snooty receptionist insisted I needed to make an appointment for £45. The worst thing is that there was literally only one couple and their dog in the waiting room so it wasn't as though the vet was rushed. I just told her I was done with them, I'd had enough and walked out.
We lost both cats that week.
We understand that nothing is promised and no amount of money will guarantee your pet will recover but they must rub their hands with glee when someone with pet insurance comes through the door as they can charge massive amounts for tests/treatments but sadly that means that for a lot of people who don't have insurance the cost of treatment is ridiculously inflated. It makes you wonder how many animals get put to sleep simply because the owner can't afford even basic treatment?
We could afford to pay but what annoyed us most is we think they miss diagnosed them and if they had received the right treatment from the start we would not have lost them.
Eden Hill Charged me 94 pound for 5…
Eden Hill Charged me 94 pound for 5 minutes cleaned dogs ear and for a 17ml bottle of cleaner daylight robbery I will never go back there pure greed when I complained all I got was how would you like to pay
Whickham westway reception at the door
Don't appreciate being spoken to like a naughty school girl by the receptionist at whickham practice. I ordered wormer last week, thought next Monday would ok. Did ring first to confirm it was processed. Turned up and got told off about giving 48 hours and how lucky I was that it was actually there. No not lucky, unfortunate that you served me pet
Best Vet Hospital in Newcastle
Thank you so much to the entire West Way Vets team for saving my beloved Libby.
I called on a Friday morning to explain I was concerned about my dog after she had ingested tinsel. The lady was very quick to get me booked in for an emergency appointment at the Fenham hospital.
On arrival I explained that Libby was a nervous older dog as she was a street rescue. The Vet, Joe, came to assess Libby in my car and was extremly patient and caring. He carried Libby through to the consultation room for me and did a thorough check. Turns out she needed an emergency op as she had ingested some wire material along with plastic which could have perforated her intestines.
Honestly can't explain in words how kindand genuine he was. He called me about 4 times to update me on how she was and took the time to explain my options and exactly what they were doing. Thank you so much Joe. Best vet I have ever dealt with.
Libby was admitted to hospital and spent 3 nights there. I was updated along the way by a couple of other Vets who were on the weekend shift, all very kind and helpful.
Being a bervous, street rescue I couldn't help but worry about her wellbeing and even though she hated every minute of being in the hospital, I could tell the team was taking good care of her. A couple weeks later and Libby is wagging her tail and running around the back garden again.
Thank you all so much from the bottom of my heart for saving her life and being calm and patient with her.
Shocking
Shocking, i cant even explain how judgemental they are? We took our pup for its 2nd injection when we were supposed to based on the date she had her 1st one! Allowed us to book it in with no issue only to find out she cant have the same injection because they use a different vaccine so we had to start from scratch and pay all over again, vets looking down on customers with a stinking attitude, apparently BLYTHMANS are completely wrong???
Awful treatment to our boy. Zero stars!
So our 13 year old Parsons Russell Terrier “Buster” took a bad turn. We took him to our vets we have used since he was born and the same for our other two dogs.
Now Westway, hang your heads in shame! Our boy was given a urine and blood test at the cost of about £500. The results come back after a week with little to nothing to worry a great deal about. During the week before Buster got his results back, he was on antibiotics. When the vet rang to give us the results, she said: “We need to investigate further and do an ultrasound test on his kidneys to see if he has stones and it’s going to cost approximately £500 but the test may not find anything!”
She never asked how our boy was. Is he getting better, worse, have his symptoms changed etc. Nothing!!😡
This caused us to panic with the alarm bells ringing, so we went to a different vets. Again and after testing, they told us the same as Westway but did say that they believed his symptoms were more than likely neurological anyway. So by the time it took to act on the right prognosis, Buster deteriorated to the point of fitting, collapsing and pretty much malnourished because we were struggling to get food into him.
We made the right decision with the advice of our new vet to not prolong his suffering and had him euthanised to our absolute despair!
Westway are a joke. DO NOT LET THEM ROB YOU OF HARD EARNED CASH AND MORE IMPORTANTLY YOUR PET!!!
