UK resident hiring a car to travel from Bulgaria to Turkey

rented a car specifically to travel from Burgas to Istanbul. Completed all documents that clearly showed I was a UK citizen and lived in the UK. Paid an additional €80 to travel cross border. Very disappointed to arrive at the Bulgarian / Turkish border to find out that UK citizens cannot take a Bulgarian hire car into Turkey. Had to leave car at border and travel to/from border by taxi - cost €450 in total. I was very surprised that your company did not know travel regulations. I understand I sighed a waiver “you cannot guarantee that I could cross the border” but I believe I should have been advised that it’s actually not possible to cross border. Very disappointed with the service provided. I suggest you ask the correct questions when taking booking from UK citizens when hiring a vehicle from you.

We would like to inform you that an additional inspection of the case has been conducted regarding the documentation prepared for the trip to Turkey with the rented vehicle.
Following our review, we concluded that all documents issued and prepared by us were complete, valid, and fully compliant with the requirements for traveling to Turkey with a rental car.
Additionally, we would like to note that in the past, other customers of ours who were also non-Bulgarian citizens have successfully crossed the border into Turkey with rental vehicles and without any similar issues.
For this reason, the arguments provided by the border authorities for denying entry do not appear to be related to the documentation prepared by our company. It is possible that there were other reasons for the refusal of entry. However, we do not have access to such information, as we are not the competent authority responsible for border control decisions and related procedures.
Please consider this email as our final position regarding the case.

But conveniently turkey do not allow uk visitors with a car
This company knowingly allowed over 25 car rentals this week to be stopped at the border and to take good customer money
We had to get a return taxi to Istanbul for 750 euro
Avoid rentacar at all costs

Following your complaint, we conducted an additional internal review regarding all documents prepared and issued by our company for international travel with the rental car. After carefully checking the case, we can confirm that all required documentation was complete, valid, and fully compliant with the standard requirements for crossing the Turkish border with a rental vehicle.
We would also like to point out that other customers of ours, including non-Bulgarian citizens, have successfully traveled to Turkey with rental vehicles provided by our company without experiencing similar issues at the border.
For this reason, based on the information available to us, the refusal of entry does not appear to be related to the documentation issued by our company. Border control authorities may deny entry for various reasons that are entirely outside the scope and responsibility of a car rental provider. Unfortunately, we do not have access to the internal procedures, assessments, or decisions made by border authorities, nor are we authorized to intervene in such matters.
While we understand your disappointment and frustration regarding the situation, we believe it is important to clarify that our company fulfilled all obligations related to the preparation of the vehicle and the necessary travel documents in accordance with the applicable requirements.
Customer satisfaction remains extremely important to us, and we always aim to assist our clients to the best of our abilities. However, decisions taken by border control institutions are independent from our services and remain solely under the authority of the respective government agencies.

Mi dispiace doverlo contestare

Occorre dire, a loro favore, che la vettura prenotata è stata esattamente quella che mi è stata consegnata sebbene non fosse ben pulita e fosse brandizzata.
Di contro, la navetta che avrebbe dovuta prelevarmi all'aeroporto è arrivata con ritardo nonostante avessi indicato il volo e quindi l'orario di atterraggio. Non solo, ma la vettura in questione è risultata subito assolutamente inadeguata per il numero di persone da trasportare. Ho dovuto quindi aspettare che pervenissero altre navette ed, alla terza, siamo finalmente riusciti a salire perdendo così oltre un'ora del nostro tempo. Come se non bastasse, una volta giunti in ufficio, abbiamo dovuto attendere quasi un'altra ora affinché tutti quelli che mi precedevano finissero il rispettivo check-in. Infatti, a nulla è servito fare preventivamente il check-in online da casa, da loro fortemente suggerito perché, giunti sul posto, non prevedono uno sportello "fast" per coloro che non devono più effettuarlo. Ho in pratica fatto il check-in da casa per favorire chi era in fila dopo di me perché ovviamente, una volta giunto dinanzi all'addetto, ho impiegato meno tempo degli altri. Inoltre il loro sito non dispone della lingua italiana nonostante la presenza degli italiani sia ragguardevole ed i documenti consegnatomi sono scritti tutti nella loro lingua senza alquanto incomprensibile per il resto del mondo. Infine non sono riuscito ad impostare il navigatore ne con Apple car play ne con Android auto perché la vettura non lo consentiva con gravi difficoltà di guida. Infine nonostante avessi sottoscritto la polizza a copertura di ogni danno possibile, hanno preteso di ispezionare l'auto analiticamente alla mia presenza. Mi chiedo cosa mi avrebbero potuto contestare?

I was driving my car for over 5 days, In the morning the key and the car don’t work, when trying to use the insurance you pay for, they send you to external services instead of being helpful!!!! Worst car service in the world!!!!!!

The issue you experienced was caused by a discharged battery, which usually happens when an electrical device (such as a charger or light) is accidentally left on while the car is parked. This is not considered a technical fault of the vehicle.

Your protection limits financial responsibility for certain types of damages, but it does not cover situations like a drained battery caused by user-related factors. In such cases, assistance is provided through an external partner, which is the standard procedure in the car rental industry.

Reservation No. 141025854 – extremely disappointed.
I rented an Opel Corsa and paid extra for Top Protection (€11.70/day), which according to their terms covers wheel and tire damage. Despite this, I was charged a €200 deposit for a minor cosmetic scratch on a rim and received only an internal “damage/tax report” and internal invoice, without any external repair invoice.
I have photos showing the condition of the car at pick-up and have already filed a complaint with the Consumer Protection Commission. My bank has been informed and confirmed that the refund should be processed by November 3rd.
I strongly recommend taking detailed photos when picking up and returning the car and being very cautious with their internal “fee” system.

We would like to clarify that Top Protection limits the renter’s financial responsibility for damages to tires and rims — it does not completely remove liability. At no point, and in none of our official materials (including our website and rental agreement), do we state that there is no responsibility for wheel, rim, or tire damage.

It’s also important to note that during several phone conversations, you personally confirmed having hit the rim multiple times.

We also offer a higher level of protection that provides extended coverage, including for such types of damages. Our team is always available to explain the specific differences between each protection level before or during the rental, so customers can choose the most suitable option for their needs.

All charges are applied strictly in accordance with the signed rental agreement and documented vehicle condition reports.

Alles hat gut geklappt am Flughafen in Sofia. Musste das Auto zwar suchen, weil dort alles umgebaut wird, aber da kann der Vermieter ja nichts für. Das Auto war sauber, vollgetankt und gut in Schuss. Ich habe mich nur gewundert, dass man mir eine Versicherung für die Autoreinigung andrehen wollte. 🤔 Habe ich abgelehnt. War in Ordnung und auch bei der Rückgabe des Opel Corsa war alles ok.

We hebben een auto van top rent a car…

We hebben een auto van top rent a car gehuur van 31-08-25 t/m 06-09-25 (1 week) via Booking. Reviews waren goed.
Bij het ophalen vande auto, werd ons gezegd dat auto hoort schoon terug gebracht worden. Als auto wordt niet gewassen zal € 18,00 moet betaald worden. Bij het vraag wat bedoelen ze schoon, werd beetje omdraait, willen niet echt een antwoord geven,bij verder vragen hebben ze gezegd dat auto moet terug gewassen gebracht worden. Was erg pusherige verkoop van de verzekering. De hele week was 32-35 graden, geen regen, geen blubber. Ik heb voorwaarden gelezen, waar stond in: als auto extreem vies is, dat moet auto schoon afgeleverd.
Op vrijdagavond hebben we prijs van de wasbeurt gekeken, het was €8,00.
zaterdag auto gebracht, en natuurlijk begon discussie over dat auto niet schoon is. Voor dat wij naar het kantoor gegaan hebben we video en foto van de auto genomen. Tijdens discussie hebben we gezegd over voorwaarden van te terugbrengen van de auto, het antwoord was, dat voorwaarden zijn veranderd, maar niet op de website. We hebben foto's genomen van de auto.Naar 10-150 minuten discussie hoef we niet meer extra betalen.
Ook doet deze bedrijf aan de valse reviews, als klant schrijft slechte review, word van de personeel wie heeft deze auto in ontvangst genomen € 3,00 van zijn salaris afgehaald.

Бяхме редовни клиенти и от офиса в София сме много доволни. Но офиса в Бургас не е за препоръчване! Първо при връщане на колата,жената в офиса не продума дума,явно не знаеше английски и немски.Без да продума се върна и аз я попитах всичко наред ли е на български? Каза : Да. Отлетяхме си за Швейцария и не ни освобождават депозита ,даже и не се обадиха, ние трябваше да питаме)заради одраскване на колата. Напълно невъзможно!Ако има одраскване явно от дните 30.08 до 3.09 са двали колата на някой да я кара. Тези хиляди франкове дето оставяхме по два три пъти в годината на тази фирма за в бъдеще ще отидат в друга! Мошенничество и арогантност в офиса в Бургас!

Относно констатираните щети, бихме искали да уточним, че уврежданията по джантите на автомобила са били установени непосредствено след приключването на Вашия наем и съответните такси са били приложени в същия ден. На база на нашите констатации можем да потвърдим, че автомобилът не е бил предоставян на друг служител или клиент в този период и щетите са настъпили по време на Вашия наем. Като доказателство, в договора за наем са приложени снимки на състоянието на автомобила при предаването му. При преглед на тези снимки ясно се вижда, че щетите, установени при връщането, не са били налични при получаването на автомобила от Вас.
Съгласно общите условия на договора, при щети по джантите се начисляват не само разходите за ремонт, но и задължителна административна такса. Тъй като общата сума надвишава стойността на депозита Ви, той беше използван за частично погасяване на задължението.

Top rentacar with top quality

There was transit awaiting my arrival at the airport which took me to the office, getting the car was quick and easy. I had a Clio which didi the job, it was nice and clean and full of fuel. The staff are very welcoming, polite and attentive. Returning the car was the seam experience with the staff with a shuttle service to the airport. Would definitely recommend and use them again

I rented a car for a week in July '25. I had my own excess insurance. The agent was very pushy trying to sell their excess insurance when I picked up car. I told him I didn't need it. I had a very bad feeling at this stage. I've rented cars all over the world and never felt this way. I even commented to my wife that this is not going to end well. So I was not surprised when I returned the car to be told that I had damaged it and I had to pay 220e. The staff member had told me to wait in the office while he checked the car. I foolishly did, I should have watched him inspect the car because I honestly would not be surprised if he scratched the car himself, he's probably on a commission! When he came back to the office he claimed I caused a 2cm scuff to the rear bumper. I had taken numerous photos when picking up the car but the "damage" was so low down my pictures did not cover it. Even when i tried to take photos of the "damage" you could not see it be because it was so faint. I had to take a close up of the exact spot just to see it. l asked for evidence that it was not damaged before I rented, the agent then showed me a photo but when I asked to see when the photo was taken he told it was taken in February!! He must of thought I was an idiot!!! Any way unfortunately there was nothing I could do as they had a 400e charge on my credit card and i would not get the documentation i need to claim from my insurance unless I signed the paper work saying I returned the car with the damage. So they basically have tou everyway! My advice is do not rent from these cowboys. They will rip you off. They also trade as Low Cost Cars. Avoid at all costs if you do not want to be scammed. In the end I was charged 170e for the damage. I know its not a lot of money but its the point, it makes me so angry that they can scam tourists so easily and get away with this blatant fraud!!!! If even one person takes my advice it will be worth it. Pay the extra money and do your business with a reputable company not these gangsters!!!!

Please note that our staff are required to clearly explain all contract conditions and available protection options at the time of pick-up. This is part of our standard process and should not be interpreted as a sales tactic. In your case, you chose to rely on your own external excess insurance, and we fully respected that decision.

Upon return of the vehicle, a damage was identified which was not present in the photos you yourself provided from the start of the rental. According to the rental terms, and without additional protection, responsibility for such damage remains with the customer, which is why the charge was applied.

Before finalizing the documentation, the damage was shown and described, and your signature on the report confirms your acknowledgment. This document is also necessary for you to submit a claim to your insurance provider.

We fully understand your frustration, but we can confirm that all procedures were followed transparently, without any pressure or misconduct.

Bad company bad service

The car broke down due to no fault of my own it was reported at 9am.The mechanic arrived 8 hours later and couldn't fix the car. He demanded 15 euros call out fee even though I had paid for expensive full insurance. I terminated the contract and cancelled all future bookings as a result. Disgusting treatment after using for 15 years.

The €15 mentioned in your review was not a call-out fee, nor was it related to the technical issue or any form of roadside assistance. It was an administrative fee applied for processing a speeding ticket issued during your rental — something entirely separate and clearly outlined in our rental terms.

To further support you, we also applied a 5% discount for a future booking, reducing your upcoming rental by €40.

You were not charged any roadside attendance fee, which normally amounts to €60 plus €0.50/km — this did not apply in your case due to the nature of the issue being a technical fault.

Our team treated the situation with respect and responsiveness, and we are genuinely disappointed that our efforts were not acknowledged. After 15 years of mutual trust, we expected a more balanced assessment.

Dont rent with this company!

It's a shame that the company Top Cars Bulgaria wants to charge us 50 euros for the lack of a sticker that they themselves put on as advertising. That is not damage to the car! Scammers! The sticker was not removed by me! They are inventing a story to charge us!!!

As per the terms of the rental agreement, removing or tampering with the branding on the vehicle is not allowed. We confirmed that the branding was removed by you, which is why the charge was applied.

The fee is in place to cover the cost of restoring the vehicle to its original condition and is in accordance with the agreement you signed at the time of the rental. We strive to be transparent with all our policies and regret any confusion.

My card details including my 3 digit…

My card details including my 3 digit security code was taken and when I complained the man told me that he will cancel the appointment even if I have paid in advance and from the office asked the desk clerks to take the details including the 3 digit security code and if I don't agree to give my details I would not receive the car. The car I have booked was guaranteed model and make up. That never happened I was given a car which I don't want. Signing in to receive the car took 55 minutes due to the desk clerk had issues knowing how to use the tablet. Then the keys was handled to me and the clerk didn't wanted to come and show me the car and check the condition with me he just asked me to sign the documents without even seen the car.
The deposit I was aware that will be taken was €200 instead i was charged with 400 leva which is over €200.
On the counter is written NO CASH but on the contract there is cash payment option. It was a scratch on the car which wasn't described in the signing in report and the signing in man said that this is not important and he can't add it so I took pictures in details of the whole car.
Signing out was peace of cake I'd say THANK YOU to Mr Dimitar Stavrev who made the signing out process easy and quick with a lot of understanding.
I would advise everyone who wants to rent a car Not to give the 3 digit security code on the back of the card to the staff as this is absolutely illegal.
I took the car from Bourgas airport.

When we make an upgrade, we always guarantee same or better vehicle as our customers satisfaction is our main priority.
As for the deposit: Since we are located in Bulgaria and the official currency here is the Bulgarian Lev, the deposit authorization is processed in this currency at the official exchange rate: 1.95583. We authorize a fixed amount in levs to ensure the same amount is released back to your card when the vehicle is returned. This is a standard procedure for card transactions and authorizations, especially in the context of car rental companies and how they operate.

Best rental car company in Bulgaria, without no doubt. I have used Top Rent a Car for many years, and have always been satisfied with both the cars and help from the personal. Both booking and delivery of the cars have always gone smoothly, but in the latest years the paperwork is more electronic and efficient than ever, approving they want to make the booking and delivery of the cars much more efficient and faster than ever. Just remember to buy insurance through the company, and not through some flight booking homepage. This will make your life much more easier in case something should happen. 😊
