The Upper Dolpo region in Nepal is remote and spectacular--across high passes, through deep and high valleys with small Tibetan villages and Buddhist and Bon gompas and chortens--and the trek is almost a month long. It was a fantastic experience. TMC offered detailed personal and thorough pre-trip information so I was confident my decision to (a) go on this trek and (b) the choice to book with TMC was the right one. Roland, in particular, is extremely knowledgeable about Nepal and Pakistan. He spent a significant amount of time with me over a video call answering questions, providing me with information and getting to know who I was and what I was looking for. The detailed and thoughtful itinerary for a long-distance trek through this remote area of Nepal was designed to allowed for acclimatization and adaptation if needed due to weather or safety. Arrivals/departures and transfers were seamless - the local team in Kathmandu were very helpful and professional. The Nepalese crew of guides, porters, kitchen crew and horsemen were outstanding and my fellow trekkers are now terrific friends. (Many of them have been on multiple trips with TMC). I could go on but suffice it to say, I'd highly recommend TMC.

EBC 14 days December 2024

What an amazing experience! Roland and his team were incredible throughout. The mountain company is a specialist travel company who focus on providing travel experiences in the Himalayas and Roland is extremely knowledgeable about the region. The advice and guidance he provided on making the journey in December was excellent, insightful and spot on. Its cold in December (especially overnight) and we were as prepared for that as we could be, but sunny and beautifully clear skies during the day - the clarity / views of the mountains were incredible. Arrival / transfers and support in Nepal were exceptionally well organised with good communication between guides and operators. Great tour of Kathmandu.

On the EBC trip, our guide Dorji and porter were both outstanding, knowledgeable of the flora and fauna of the mountains, set a good pace each day, and when one of the group suffered from Altitude Sickness were outstanding in managing and reducing this so we could all successfully make EBC.

I couldn't recommend them enough. A truly incredible experience and memorable journey!

Our 34-day Snowman Trek (Paro → Haa → Lunana → Dur Tsachu → Bumthang) was, quite simply, one of the most impressive adventures we’ve ever done. The logistics and judgement were superb throughout: thoughtful acclimatisation and pacing (including rest days in places like Laya and Thanze), calm and confident decision-making over 20+ high passes (peaking around 5,460m), and a level of organization that made life in very remote terrain feel safe, smooth, and genuinely enjoyable. We experienced Bhutan at its most dramatic — high, wild, and wonderfully isolated — and the Mountain Company structure behind the scenes is what made that possible.

A huge thank you to Almas, whose steady leadership, clear communication and constant encouragement kept the team moving well across long, high days, and to Dorji, whose local knowledge and quiet competence added so much depth — from the route’s rhythms and villages to the mountain reality of the Lunana plateau, Dur Tsachu, and camps like Chomolhari Base Camp and Tshorim Lake. When the weather turned properly “Snowman Trek” (including a severe storm at Chomolhari Base Camp with wind and snow), the way the team managed safety, morale, and practicalities was outstanding — professional, calm, and always one step ahead.

And truly, the heart of this trek was the local crew — the yak herders and camp team who made the expedition feel warm and human even at altitude and in the cold. The kitchen staff were extraordinary, and Tandin deserves special mention: consistently delicious meals in demanding conditions, hot drinks exactly when you needed them, and a level of care and hospitality that lifted everyone every single day. It’s rare to find an operator that combines expedition-grade competence with that much kindness. We’d recommend Mountain Company — and Roland’s leadership in particular — without hesitation to anyone who wants to experience Bhutan’s greatest trek in the best possible hands.

Excellent itinerary through some remote parts of Nepal on the GHT. Support from the office team to the guides and western leader, the porters and kitchen crew were all outstanding. Communication prior to and during the trek was very good. Adaptations to the itinerary were based on the best available information and we had to re-route for the safety of all of us. Food was plentiful, varied, and delicious. Th group had a preference for packed lunches instead of hot lunch and accommodations were made for this when possible.
This is an arduous trek, in remote regions. Previous long-distance trekking experience highly recommended.

We had originally booked this trek back in late 2019 for March 2020 but Covid put a stop to that. We were living in New Zealand at the time so were locked down for 2 years. The Mountain Company (TMC) gave us a full refund at the time, with no problems.
Due to circumstances, including returning to live in the UK, we were unable to rebook until January 2025 choosing to go in late November taking the advice from Roland from TMC.
From the very start Roland was more than helpful to us as we sorted out the various queries we had etc.
When we arrived in Kathmandu we had a meeting with Roland and Sanja our trek guide where we had a briefing re our trek and answered any questions we had.
We were collected early in the morning to be driven to Kathmandu Airport and our guide smoothed our way through the somewhat chaotic boarding process and we were soon on our way to the exciting landing at Lukla Airport.
After a warming cup of coffee we set off on our trek. Over the next five days we made our way in comfortable stretches to our final destination at Pangboche where we would stay for two nights before starting the return journey to Lukla. My wife went to Ama Dablam Base Camp on the second day whilst I stayed in Pangboche as I had been finding the altitude a little harder to cope with and she and our guide would be faster without me. We then returned over 3 days to Lukla and an early morning flight the next day to Kathmandu.
The trek was exacty what we had hoped, with beautiful scenery and people the whole way and our guide Sanja was excellent and nothing was too much trouble for him.
The Luxury Lodges were excellent, but were luxury by Nepalese standards so around a 2 star hotel. We had really nice rooms with an ensuite with a western style toilet and a shower. Being late November the rooms were cold but we had really warm beds with heavy blankets and either electric blankets or hot water bottles. We were always extremely well looked after by the lodge staff and and more food supplied than we coud possibly eat and an almost constant supply of hot drinks. There was wifi in nearly every lodge and we were able to charge our phones and smart watches when required all at no extra cost.
We had a fantasitic trip, in fact my wife said it was her best holiday ever. TMC were excellent the whole time from booking to the end and beyond and we can thoroughly recommend them.

Our Mountain Company trip to Pikey Peak was in the Everest region of Nepal and is an alternative to a high level trekking experience but while still encompassing the magic of the Country. Reaching a height of just over 4000m, Pikey Peak was a wonderful place to gaze on four of the world's 8000m peaks. On the way the scenery and the people were, as always, a joyful experience. The trails chosen by the Mountain Company were quiet and manageable.

The service provided by The Mountain Company was, as always, efficient, professional and comprehensive through the planning stages to the delivery. Roland Hunter takes a personal interest in all aspects and is resident for most of the trekking season in the region. Their in-country staff are a delight to be with and are ambassadors to their country.

The Mountain Company are the best trekking company I have used for trekking in Nepal. My friends are teasing me that I should work for the company, because I speak so highly of them. Also I should mention that my children feel comfortable that their mother is looked after while she is away in Nepal. Any pre-trek queries are answered promptly. Their staff in country are extremely knowledgeable, friendly, caring, just the best! This was my third trek with The Mountain Company and I have signed up already for my next trek with The Mountain Company. The Mountain Company are very client-focused, listening and reacting to post-trek feedback.

From start to finish the Mountain company were there. Pre trip info, tips, advice, we felt like we were in good hands. Our guide and porter were fantastic . Knowledgeable, helpful, full of life saving tips.
I’m not normally so animated about a trip and the company organizing it, but during our trip, we got to witness other companies efforts. Not enough time to acclimatize, and their itineraries weren’t as full as ours… unfortunately a few ended up going back down. Such a shame. I wouldn’t go back with any other company.

This was the first time I travelled with The Mountain Company (TMC), and I echo the other comments here - impeccable organisation, great guides, high attention to detail, clear and frequent communication from Roland. I would (and will) definitely travel again with them again.
The Kanchenjunga Circuit (North & South Basecamps) trek itself was sublime. Amazing landscapes and majestic mountains. Be warned that it is not an easy trek, but the rewards are plenty, and where you do not see many other groups. Some organizations do go in the opposite direction but the MTC has definitely got this right, and also factor in well the acclimatization into the trek. But the last 3 days were especially unique (and not offered as far as i am aware by other operators), since you descend lower and into small Nepalese villages and can truly witness their way of life - it becomes far more than a simple 'mountain trek'.
Overall - I highly recommend the MTC and the way they put together this trek. And go and see Kanchenjunga!

Camping trek in lamjung Himal, amzing views, no other trekkers, what the porters and kitchen staff do is incredible, especially the food provided, guides were knowledgeable and friendly. Pre trip briefing by Roland was informative and useful. There was nothing I didn’t like about the whole experience.

We had a wonderful time trekking the Full Annapurna Circuit with The Mountain Company in November/December 2025. This was the sixth time I’ve used TMC for a Nepal trek and having done 25 treks over 40 yrs there and used some of the bigger name companies I wish I had heard of them sooner. Their operation is second to none, from excellent customer service, pre - during and post trek to knowledgeable, friendly, experienced and caring staff on trek and in KTM. Their itinerary and route was very well thought out and recce’d to allow for the best possible success on the Thorong La and to use the least trafficked trails/tracks to avoid busy roads. I had been told the second half of the circuit from Marpha to Nayapul wasn’t worth doing these days because of the roads but we were mostly on local trails with very few other people and on some days no trekkers at all. It was very reminiscent of when I did the circuit in 1984 & 1991, amazing and of course the magnificent mountain scenery of Dhaulagiri etc is still wonderful. Highly recommend.

This was our first time trekking with The Mountain Company (TMC). We were initially drawn to TMC because of the varied itineraries offered, which tended to cover areas less frequently trekked. Having been regular travellers to Nepal we had exhausted the options offered by the previous company we had used.
The Mountain Company provided detailed information and promptly responded to questions which helped us choose their Naar to Upper Mustang camping trek. This was an excellent trek which took us through remote traditional villages and into even more remote valleys which are only usually walked by local yak and goat herders. All the time we were surrounded by magical high mountain scenery. The more remote parts of the trek follow narrow undulating paths which do require some care but any effort is well rewarded by the superb views. As you enter Mustang, towards the end of the trek, the scenery changes to reveal a wonderful high plateau cut through by steep sided river valleys.
We were very impressed by the work ethic and support provided by our guides and camping crew and the high standard of camping equipment used. Regular contact was maintained between our guide and TMC which allowed appropriate, weather enforced changes to be made to our return transport arrangements to Kathmandu.
We can highly recommend The Mountain Company and their Naar to Upper Mustang trek. We will certainly look to travel with TMC again.

Another excellent trek with The Mountain Company. Compared to other treks we'd done in Nepal, this was a totally unique area to explore. Stunning mountain views and landscapes, combined with Tibetan culture and monasteries. Our guides were excellent and the teahouse/lodge accommodation was also of a good standard. We were lucky to have great weather too. Although a relatively short trek it was still demanding in terms of the terrain and high altitude. But definitely worth it!

Great personal input from Roland who listened to our priorities whilst discussing trek options and recommended Lamjung Himal. This trip did exactly what we had wanted in terms of wonderful mountain views and absence of other trekking groups for the whole of the 9 day trip. Excellent guiding team and miraculous cook and kitchen crew, ably supported by the porters. TMC is a very professional set up with excellent pre-trip information, a great local team in Nepal and very responsive to any queries. Highly recommended

Our 14 day holiday in Nepal, including a 9 day camping trek, completely surpassed all expectations. We chose this trek after talking to Roland Hunter, The Mountain Company owner. He listened to our needs, then recommended Lamjung Himal, which was perfect. Whilst camping up to 3700m is not always easy, the fantastic team of guides, porters and cooks made it a first class experience. Waking up to sunrise in the mountains with no other humans within a three day walk was the most majestic experience. And I hadn't camped for 30 years!!

The whole trip was excellent, informative and well organised.

And the trekking route from Naar to Upper Mustang is very interesting, across a varied and remote mountain landscape. Fascinating villages and few other trekkers.

The Trip
The Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley is an understandably popular trek in Nepal, combining dramatic landscapes with rich cultural experiences. The Manaslu Circuit winds through deep gorges and climbs steadily to the 5,135m Larkya La pass. Along the way are views of Manaslu, the world’s eighth-highest mountain. The six-day side trip into Tsum Valley is equally worthwhile, featuring beautiful monasteries and significant Buddhist sites.

This was my first tea house trek after three camping treks with TMC, and there are pros and cons to compare. Tea houses usually provide power and WiFi (generally free), menus to choose from (though the options are the same throughout), and daily showers (usually cold). TMC cover five food choices plus seven hot drinks a day, and portions tend to be enormous — you definitely won’t go hungry.

The itinerary builds in acclimatisation time, which is welcome, although around half the hiking days are relatively short, so bring something to keep you occupied in the afternoons. The local crew were excellent throughout. November proved an ideal month to trek, with clear blue skies every day — just make sure to bring warm layers for the higher sections.

Be aware that word is well and truly out on both the Manaslu Circuit and the supposedly more remote Tsum Valley. Expect full tea houses, but if you start early the trails themselves are generally quiet.

This was my fourth long trek with The Mountain Company (TMC), and once again I found them very good to deal with. Their organisation and communication are consistently first-rate. The high level of care and professionalism throughout reinforced why I keep coming back to TMC for my Himalayan treks.

This was my third Himalayan trek organised by Roland Hunter of The Mountain Company. As usual, the service offered was superb. Excellent attention to detail, both before and during the trek. Roland employs a brilliant local team, and the food prepared by our cook was absolutely amazing.
