Three months to fill order for prints after lengthy wait for scans of a small number of slides to be completed. Multiple promises by customer service to “ look into it” with no follow through.

Scan Cafe makes great scans of our slides and gives us folders that we can download.
They also return the slides to us.
I have had them scan my parent's and my spouse's parent's slides.

Avoid these guys like the plague. They will never stop spamming you. They spam you from multiple different campaigns and they all offer you the opportunity to unsubscribe, but it won't happen, so just avoid them in the first place.
I got 83 messages from them, 3 were personal.
After writing admin@scancafe… they have been prompt in responding… we’ll see if it worked

I used the ScanCafe service to have some old video tapes digitized. I paid a reasonable fee for that. But without telling me, ScanCafe then began charging my credit card $9.99 per month. They now tell me that is for a "cloud archive service" but there was no indication on the website at order time that I was signing up for any subscription service.
When I called today to cancel this charge and demand a refund for all the past charges, they refused to give me a refund. They claimed that their website showed that I would be signed up for this recurring charge, but they were unable to show me what that looked like, nor able to prove that any such thing was shown to me during the order process. (If they hid such a line in the fine print that few people read, that is in any case unethical.) I have read online that many other customers have the same complaint as me -- being billed for an ongoing service that they never signed up for.

I’m not able to reply to ScanCafe’s reply to my review, so I’m adding my response here. Thank you for your reply. If your checkout process is as clear as you say it is, why not share an image of it with me and the world and let folks decide for themselves? I’m an expert in user interface design and I know that you can make things more or less obvious to users. You have clearly taken steps to make this subscription charge very difficult to see (as I am a careful user and didn’t notice it at all). In my email receipt for the order that details the charges (the only remaining evidence I have of this scam), it lists the fee for the digitization of my VHS tapes ($140), and then under the “Fee” column for the line item “Cloud Archive and Download” it lists no fee, then the “Total” line of the receipt is exactly the same as the fee for the digitization of the tapes. In other words, it says “$140 + X = $140”. This implies that X = $0. And yet X was actually $9.99 per month until the user notices the charge on their credit card and takes action to cancel. If you are a consumer considering using the ScanCafe service, please google “ScanCafe hidden fees” and you will see that I’m not alone in being poorly treated by this company. You will find complaints as well on the Better Business Bureau website, but ScanCafe is not accredited by the BBB (I wonder why!) so you will not find a BBB score. If you are a ScanCafe employee, I would urge you to press your UX team and company leaders to stop these deceptive practices. If you are a member of the leadership team, you know exactly what you are doing — lining your pockets with money that customers didn’t intend to give you. How can you enjoy such ill-gotten wealth?

ScanCafe has done a great job scanning photos for me. I sent them a few VHS tapes this time and they had a great price and great service.
The problem is that it's very tricky to not sign up for a MyHeritage account to get the videos downloaded. You need to un-click this option. Without doing that I was signed me for an annual account with 30 days free. 30 days after I got my tapes, I was charged $149.99 for a service that I don't want and will never use.
I reached out and they fixed it. I'll use ScanCafe again because I like their service, but just be careful if you don't want a recurring charge to either not order this service or to cancel before you have to pay

I used this company 2 years ago and it was great, so I didn't look at reviews before ordering again. This time they required you to sign up for a My Heritage account in order to get a digital download of your photos, but they only mentioned an extra cost if you asked for a USB drive delivery, no mention of cost for digital download (two years ago it was included so I assumed it was the same this time). Without my knowledge or consent I was signed up for a $149.99 annual plan (paid to Scan Cafe, not My Heritage) and billed to my credit card a month later. On my order invoice from Scan Cafe, before I entered my credit card info, it merely said the My Heritage account was "active" with the word "active" in the price column. I contacted customer service and they sent me a screen grab of a page that exists somewhere on their website with this cost, but I never saw it during the order process, never clicked on a button to select this annual plan, and never saw an invoice for something they said I signed up for. According to My Heritage, I was on their Free Basic (Scan Cafe) plan to host my images. Contacted my credit card company and got the charges reversed. Will never use this company again.

ScanCafe Frequent Flyer: I've used ScanCafe multiple times over the years for a variety of media including older slides, prints stuck to album pages and video. I've never had a single problem--no lost media, no issues with scans. They organize based on how you organized the media you sent; they'll either return or destroy your originals, and their communication and customer service are great, plus they've evolved their delivery methods. Absolutely recommend.

I have now placed four orders for scanning several hundred slides, all of which have been delivered as promised. The quality images has been good, the pricing quite reasonable, and the customer service (i.e. answering questions) excellent. I plan to continue to use ScanCafe for digitizing my several thousand remaining slides.

I would never use this company again! If I could give it a ZERO I would. I paid extra for high quality scans of both slides and negatives - they had to redo them - and they are all unusable. Images are not sharp. And customer service was awful.

I had a great experience using the Scancafe Memories Kit. It was very easy- they sent me a box which I filled with what I wanted to digitize (in this case, reel-to-reel audio tapes from the late 1960’s). I mailed it back to them and a couple of months later I received the audio recordings via an online link. (Shortly thereafter I received the physical tapes and a memory stick through the mail). My family members and I were able to hear the recordings clear as day. My 80+ year old uncle, who had kept the tapes, was almost in tears when he heard his parent’s voices again. Thank you!

I started using ScanCafe about 15 or so years ago and was always very pleased with their services. However, after a hiatus of a few years (mostly because I had already had all of my photos scanned) I decided to send them some old VCR tapes to try to preserve them. Their services took much longer than usual and they were unable to preserve most of what I sent them. They were old so this wasn't a concern at first. Then I started being charged $14.99 every month. I thought the first two charges were for the attempted work but I just received a third charge. When I chatted with them, I discovered it was for the My Heritage subscription, which I never agreed to. They now refused to refund those charges. I purposefully backed out of the My Heritage site when I realized it was a subscription and never agreed to be charged for that. I am truly sorry that this company has started trying to reel people in with an unwanted subscription. I will not be using them in the future.

I sent 2 reels to Scan Cafe to have them digitized. When I got the digital movies they were both together on one digital file. I emailed customer service and received a response back from Fatima. I worked with her for 4 weeks concerning this issue. It took forever and 2 more phone calls to get it corrected!! Now I finally have the movies back and Scan Cafe removed both movies from the original reels and taped them both together and put them on the same plastic reel. Now I have to spend my time to remove them and put them back on the original reels!! I called to speak to a supervisor and again Fatima answered the phone and told me there was no supervisor available. I know better than that. THIS IS THE WORST PLACE WITH THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. I would have given them 0 stars if I could have!

Generally speaking all the scans are excellent and I’d offer highest marks with 5 stars if the website was easier to navigate. Ok, I’m an old guy, but I always shoot 120 film. Finding the correct order information seems a bit hidden to me.

I was generally pleased with my experience, and happy with my interactions with the staff. I was also pleased that I was able to purchase the raw scans, unimproved and unrotated, as well as the straightened and improved scans, so I could decide which I liked better. Some of the coreected scans seemed a bit dark to me, though the actual photographs themselves weren't that great to begin with. I did not opt for any special additional corrections of any of the photos, but I believe that ScanCafe would have done a good job, had I chosen to do so.

Helped save our family history.
As our parents moved into assisted living we located a treasure trove of childhood slides. We quickly skimmed through to select what we wanted to save and trusted ScanCafe to preserve them.
The process was easy and fast. Now we all have access to these precious memories that had previously been hidden at the back of a closet.

Liked the communication as things moved through the scanning process. The quality of the scans (slides in my case) was outstanding - as it had been in the past. Shipping to/from was easy. The only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars was a bit of confusion on how to get back the scanned digital images. I don't want to signup for a service - just want to download my images once scanned and manage them myself. Customer support fixed it, but I'd prefer to understand better when creating my order.

Thousands and thousands of negatives, slides and printed photos later, I have never been disappointed in the quality of the digitization services provided to me by ScanCafe. All of my parent's heirloom photos, all of my in-law's heirloom photos (and some of mine too!) have been very carefully scanned. Such high quality! Many of the photos I entrusted to their quality scanning were original prints dating from 1880. With their help, I've archived photos of many generations past for (hopefully) many generations to come.
