I opted in to an HSA accounts with Optum Bank through my employer. My employer flagged early in the calendar year that Optum Bank had closed my account for no known reason, despite my employer submitt... Se mere

Loves Denying Valid Medical Expenses with Receipts
Same thing everyone else is experiencing. Filed a claim including a receipt for my medical expense. They denied the claim. The claim has all the information required by the IRS. Avoid if you can if you like getting YOUR medical expense money. Make sure you only upload Explanation of benefits unless you like wasting your time.
This company is a total joke every time…
This company is a total joke every time I call they want to ask me for my social security number the bank card never works and the customer service is horrible
Ridiculous fees and zero support
A scam bank with ridiculous fees and zero support. They charge a monthly fee for an HSA if you don't maintain a minimum balance, but that becomes impossible if you later gain other health insurance and can no longer contribute. They also charged a fee to close my account, something that should be illegal. Their website sucks...for a month I was unable to sell off my HSA investments because of a glitch in their system. When I called for help, their customer support was worthless; the person on the phone could do NOTHING to help me. The worst bank I've ever dealt with.
Crooks - hold your money as long as they can
Every time I call i get different directions on what is required. They're making up rules - you have to sign the receipt, we need more information, etc. Submitted 10 claims with almost identical documentation, only got 3 approved, and the rest were claimed to not have dates on them, even though they all clearly had dates on them. Optum makes up whatever they can to hold on to your money!
Their technology is pathetic
Their technology is pathetic. It took 4 tries over the course of 2 weeks to connect my bank account for an online deposit. Customer service was not able to help and said they have glitches in the system.Worse, it does not allow a deposit on the last day of the year, even though the 31st,2025 is not a weekday or a holiday. I am moving my HSA account.
Denied Legitimate Charges Multiple Times
Multiple times for clearly legitimate charges from the same provider Optum has denied the charge saying I need more information.
I have had to call to follow up several times for small charges often less than $50 that are clearly from healthcare providers.
Poor customer service -- Crappy website

Take your money and keep it
They take your money for the FSA and do not pay out, due to the "use it or lose it" financial incentive. Submitted docs/invoices for expensive prescriptions with all required info in their FAQ. They will pay the $20 prescriptions no questions asked, but the $600 one, they say they need a signed letter from the doctor saying WHY they prescribed it in the first place, as if I can get that - The RX says all that. I have submitted paperwork, including the blood test itself, three times for a $6.95 lab charge - th eorder, the receipt / invoice and the actual 14 page lab results. "Additional documentation required" it says, but I can't figure out what. This is MY MONEY from my paycheck. They are worse than the insurance company (NOTE: Optum is owned by United Healthcare, which makes all the sense in the world.) I have been trying since June or July to get paid, submitting paperwork three times. I work for a law firm and my time is billable. Hundreds of dollars in my billable time over a $6.95 card charge. THE WORST
Nonsensical claims denial
Submitted the same exact billing statement with all the details needed to request reimbursement as I have in the past and which were accepted. This time, the claims were denied, asking for more verification. There is no more verification. These are the forms the hospital sends out. Called once, they took my information and I never received a call back. Now spending more time calling them again. And this is my money I am trying to access. Just awful.
Inaccurate instructions from employees
I needed to pay a Doctor bill with my HSA debit card. I was instructed by Optum Bank to transfer from an investment to savings. I did so on December 1. The money was still not available at five days as I was told it would be. I contacted Optum Bank again. They said weekends didn’t count. There was no weekend between Monday and Friday. On Tuesday I called back because the money was still not available. The Optum Bank employee was unable to answer why the money was hung up in a high-yield savings account. She had to write a problem ticket and I am waiting for a response. It has been a full day of waiting. No response.
Denied Claims with No Explanation and Refused to Reimburse Approved Claims
Repeatedly denied claims with no explanation for why it was denied. After multiple calls, they finally accepted and said it was a software error and they manually pushed it through and that is was approved. Months later, I kept calling asking about the reimbursement, and they said it was approved and in the back office to send reimbursement. Called most recently and "the grace period had passed so they cannot reimburse for a past claim year", even though it was submitted and approved months before that ended. Totally incompetent.
I am going to mirror what everyone else…
I am going to mirror what everyone else says, because its true. This is the most frustrated I have ever been dealing with something that should be so simple. While they claim the request for additional documentation is random, if you look at my claims every 4th transaction is denied. It makes zero sense, everything you submit is denied with no explanation, my card is constantly suspended. I have been fighting them since July over $1.47 Quest lab payment that was billed or whatever its called, 2 weeks after we were actually there so they have date of service as 7/3 and we were there 6/21 or something and I keep submitting literally any and everything, I have even given them the lab results and it continues to be denied because they are saying that is not it.... please tell me what you think I am gaining by attempting to defraud the IRS of $1.47 pretax spend and at a lab, no less. I could see if it was from a company where I could purchase something, but what am I buying at the lab. I just said to hell with it, what is left in my account they can just have its cheaper than the sanity I am losing from trying to solve their issue
If you're an employer - steer away from Optum HSA/FSA
I had their FSA and now their HSA through my employer - absolutely horrible. They require documentation even when you use it at your doctor or dentist office. If you don't send in documentation, they suspend your card. The worst HSA service I've ever used.
If I could give negative stars, I would.
Worst FSA I've ever had
Worst FSA I've ever had. Their customer service is the worst I've experienced. They give zero details as to why they reject claims documentation - you are left guessing. Their phone system and web site have constant problems. They nickel and dime you for every expense. I'm not going to sign up for another FSA next year. Why fight so hard to spend your own hard-earned money.
Don't do business if you can keep from it!
Keep denying claim yet I've provided every piece of information requested. Keep getting canned email response stating they need more information. Been fighting this for months. No one will respond to email or chat. They simply want to keep your FSA money at the end of the year!
Had to get Consumer Protection Bureau to intervene
Might be some of the worst customer service I've ever experienced. For 3 months, Optum never credited a refund from a vendor (over 1K) to my HSA card and they always claimed they never received it, even though I had the transaction ID from the vendor. It took making a complaint to the Consumer Protection Bureau to get them to "find" the refund and post it to my account.
Have never had a good experience
Have been with Optum over 20 years, not my choice, and have never -- not once -- had a good experience. Today it happened again with a simple question about my account. I'm so done I can't even be pleasant on the phone anymore.
Horrible application
Horrible application. This is a frustrating HSA provider. Their web site has continuous problems. They lack clarity on documents they ask you to provide. Their customer service does not follow through. They waste your time nit picking over $18.34 charges. My recommendation is if you have the choice of HSA providers pick another vendor. I had Fidelity HSA for years and never had the amount of aggravation that I continually have with Optum
If I could give less than 1
If I could give less than 1, I would have. Worst company every. I had FSA with them, and trying to get funds out of it is a hustle. I have medical bills to pay and when I asked them to send me a credit card, they are actually lying that they sent, but all I get is other nonsense mail from them, and not the credit card.
Optum bank: a roach motel for your money; it goes in but never comes out
I started the process of transferring my Optum HSA funds from their bank to Fidelity in June. It is now September. I still don't have the money in my Fidelity account. Optum's online processes are opaque and not helpful and don't address transfers out. Their customer service people are pleasant but have no useful information at all and appear to lie. I had to spend a long time on the phone just to get the date they purportedly mailed a check (good grief, mailed a check in 2025!) and the address to which they mailed it. First, they told me they didn't have the information, and it wasn't until a 3rd person got on the line that they provided that little tidbit.
