Horribly run company
I opened an account in 2010, last deposit was 2015 for a medical IRA. When I went to use some of the money invested in 2024, I found that 21,000 of the 26000 was gone. Someone accessed my account at Health Equity and drained 21k from the account.
It is IRA money, and that money needs to have taxes paid. I have asked HEquity to explain what I just did on their letter head...they have refused. Do not trust these folks. The interface on line is difficult. No one returns requests in a timely manner

HE locks out Computer only users
HE gives no mechanism to log in unless you install their app or a 3rd party one on a mobile device or use invasive biometretrics, which in any case my PC doesn't have. This is not enhanced security at all. It holds you hostage to multiple parties and means of compromise.

If I could give 0 stars I would. This company is a nightmare to deal with. Repeatedly needs receipts and claims filed for stuff you already did. Denies receipts that make no sense for the denials, stating things like services provided not stated in receipt, but it clearly says for Orthodontics. Never have I experienced such grief trying to get ahold of my own money.
Stay Away
Needed to close my account since I no longer worked for a company that used them and the account was almost depleted. Closed it and they kept the remaining funds as a "closure fee" with ZERO communication to me that would happen. That kind of thing should be illegal...STAY AWAY and find somewhere else to create an HSA.
This passcode thing is CRAP
This passcode thing is CRAP. I was not able to set it up on my phone (I wound up having to remove malware that took 5 hours) and then decided it wasn't worth the risk to my phone again so I closed my account. It's just not worth the phone app. They are not providing my 12/31/25 statement nor copies of any forms sent to the IRS, so I'm flying blind. NO DATA. This is breach of fiduciary responsibility, I believe, but they don't care. I do care but will have to work around it in spite of them.
Pass code is crap!
Everything used to work fine online. You log in, you pay your bill. It took 5 minutes. Then they added this passkey thing, which took me more than two hours to set up and works only on my phone. Will not work on my desktop. Since I have vision problems I prefer to work on my desktop. But not now! Now I have to squint on my phone. More than 2 hours of set up for a three minute task!!! Not really the worth the effort and made my blood pressure go up.

Most frustrating call center I've ever experienced. Trying to open a personal HSA account. Got the runaround in circles for 2-months with no resolutions. Wish there were an alternative to this horrible place!
Unfairly charging us monthly
My husband and I each have over $2500 in our respective accounts. Back in January 2026 I went through hours of hell with them to get them to stop charging us the $7.50 per month charge due to our balance being over what it says on the website is required to charge the fee. Same thing started up in February and I finally gave up and let them charge us. I intend to drain this account a.s.a.p. HORRIBLE customer service

Passkey is a nightmare
Passkey is a nightmare. as someone that doesnt have a smart phone I am having a very hard time every time I want to login on my desktop, Its a shame that a company wouldn't offer 2 step verification.
There are many people like me that prefer not to use a smart phone for many reasons including religious reasons or just because of their age and Health Equity should respect that.
Aside from that the entire claim process is not user friendly and should be more simplified.
Their Customer support was actually good.

I have a HSA from my employer with them and all they have been difficult. They just implemented a passkey login which makes it impossible to login any other way. On top of that the investment account charges a flat 3% admin fee PER MONTH on the whole investment balance. Cant wait to take my business elsewhere. I work in higher education btw.
Garbage Company Forces you to sell your Personal Info!
This company cares more about its bottom line than you. They now charge your to send your own money to you. Also, if you hope to bypass this, by removing access to tie your account EXCEPT by using Plaid, they have essentially found a way sell your personal transaction information so they can get a discount on processing reimbursement accounts.
It's not nearly as much about "Security" as they would fool you into believing. You can bypass the sale of your information easily enough though. Just open an account somewhere that you don't do anything else with. Set it up, then block all future permissions and formally request Plaid delete all of your information. Bull shit that they expect to get to spy on your transactions from that point forward. Don't let them! And read the EULA!! It's very explicit!
The customer help function not helpful
The customer help function has never resulted in resolution of any questions or issues for me. It prompts you through AI assistant which has not once been useful or relevant, then goes to live agent whom unfortunately are either not trained nor given the tools to provide any resolution.
Health Equity is also completely uninterested in fraudulent charges. I had a fraudulent provider bill to the account (but no co-pay for me) so I did not pick up right away. I notified them as soon as I saw it and they told me "you don't have an out of pocket cost so why are you worried about it". You can thank Health Equity in part for our high health costs.
Bad roll over experience
They were great for years holding my HSA investments and I used their debit card. But when quit using passwords to access my account, and I requested a roll over to a local bank, it took from August of 2025 until today, February 12, 2026 to get that accomplished. Untold hours on the phone, multiple emails... In December Health Equity said the check was in the mail. Later they told me they canceled the checked. Then I found out the account had never been closed. Not sure how much is lying, incompetence, passing the buck... All I know is that what should be an easy task, a roll over, took hours on the phone, threats of involving an attorney, getting locked out of my phone once, and seven months to accomplish.

I have been trying to get a card mailed to me since November 2025. I have called multiple times each time is another lie as to how long I have to wait for the card. I was told I was getting one overnighted. I called 2 days later to find out the tracking number turns out they said they never reported the card was not recieved. This level of incompetitance is on the verge of fraud.

I am extremely tech savvy and I found the process to login to be not possible via app. I set up a passkey and then it errored. When I tried with the computer, same result. So disappointed. Need to inform my HR team to switch back to Bank of America ASAP.
Avoid at all cost
Transfer of funds to another HSA takes months as they keep the interest on you funds after closing your account.
If you have medical bills the funds will be unavailable to you for months in a transfer so they can do this - tell your employer to avoid.
