Bunch of thieves
Bunch of thieves - Zakynthos Airport Europcar, do not rent a car here. Europcar gave us a scratched up car, brakes did not work properly. The car was all marked up before we got it and they still had the audacity to claim that we scratched the car and that we should pay €120, to be honest the banged up car was not even worth that much.
Day light robbery and horrible service.
Never rent here!!
Europcar do not look after their customers. Be warned!
We booked a VW Polo or equivalent, We got a Nissan Note in bad condition and the car broke down during our holiday. When it did, we (2 adults & 3 children) were stranded on the mountainside for 2+ hours waiting for roadside assistance in heat with little water. When car was taken away, Europcar would not pay for a taxi to take us to village for water and food and to await (2 hours) replacement car. On our return to Athens, the staff said they did not have authority to reimburse the taxi money (15 Euros). We also were not reimbursed for the full tank of petrol which was in the broken down car (70 Euros). We asked to speak to the manager and he simply shouted at us. We were astounded that this behaviour and attitude came from an international company. Appalled.
Bad experience with Europcar Corfou.
Reading other comments, it seems that insurance & damages are a trouble for travelers, unfortunately it happened to me too..
For the 4th time, I've rented a Micra at Europcar Corfou for 2 weeks in july 2018. When I gave the car back, the guy in charge found some scratches down under the front of the car left and right and I was charged of 186 €.
As a matter of fact, they were not mentioned on the diagram when I got the car. If you just keep standing up near the car, you can't see them and the 1st day, I did not put my knees and head on the ground to check almost under the car (and neither did the guy in charge).
I don' try to escape from my responsibilities (and at the end, I hope that the Visa Premier insurance will pay me back) but those scratches can't have been made by another car, it comes probably from a misconduct when parking. I know what I did (and my wife was always with me), I drove only 170 km in 2 weeks and parked in a very limited number of places.
So of course, as it was not mentioned on the diagram when I took the car, I can't accuse anybody. But from my perspective it really looks like racket and unfair commercial behaviour I was not used to with Europcar.
After complaining to the customer service, I was offered a 20€ discount on my next rental but next year there will be no 5th time with Europcar. My dear fellow tourists, think about my experience when you're looking for a rental company.
Lazy people there!!! scammers!!!!
we rented a car at europ car athene. We would be picked up at the airport. You only received this after payment. No one is to be seen on arrival at airport, so call. Someone was on the way. So rental company is a few km outside the airport. When we arrive, our car had to be washed. Finally the car was ready. We thought we could start our day (here also bought the flight times) So 6:35 in the morning we finally had the car. Was the tank literally empty, or we wanted to refuel ourselves. We had to go after someone who indicated via a direction indicator where we had to refuel. When we arrive at 6:45 the pump was closed and would only open at 7:00 am, followed by a big truck that would supplement the petrol which could take an hour. So we called europcar with the question no other car can be brought because you do not want to start your holiday and waste your time. No, that was not possible and we had to figure it out. They are lazy rude people who work there. This still nooi along with a rental company. Never more europ car for us! Gives us Hertz, allamo, thrifty or dollar that are the better companies.
Bad experience of Europcar at Chania airport, Crete
When we arrived at Chania airport there was no one from Europcar to meet us as we were told they would. After looking inside and outside the airport we found the phone number in our documents and rang them and they came to pick us up. But there were too many people for the van so my partner went to pick up the hired car from europcar depot leaving me and two children at the airport as their shuttle service to the depot was full. We waited ages standing outside the airport since my partner first had to wait behind a family who were very unhappy that the van they were given was not similar to the car they had paid for, and then she spent a long time because of the staff threatening her about needing extra insurance. The credit card deposit was 992 euros which was much more than we expected. At first she stuck with our intention just to keep our basic insurance but then the staff told her that someone else might damage our car. They said that Europcar would take the money from us and only if they could get the money back off the other party would they be able to repay us. She was told that in the experience of the staff it was common for Europcar not to be able to get the money back from the other party so we would never get our money back even if it was not our fault. Eventually she agreed to buy extra insurance. My partner arrived back at the airport very distressed and not feeling able to drive the car as a result, so the whole family went to the depot to collect the car.
I immediately cancelled the extra insurance, but through my partners distress I thought it prudent to pay for an additional license.
After being presented with the initial damage report on the car before we drove the car away, they failed to document considerable damage to
the tailgate which was tapped up with electrical tape and i believe now was purposely overlooked.
After enjoying our holiday my partner decided to clean the car inside and out the night before returning the car, giving Europcar no excuse to
impose extra charges on us.
When we returned the car they tried to charge us valeting fees. This resulted in a heated exchange, and with a steadfastness on our part, including us telling them that the handbrake didn't work properly, they decided their would be no charge. However the whole experience was unpleasant and not a nice end to the holiday.
THEY ARE A LOAD OF CROOKS THIEVES ETC STAY WELL CLEAR!!!
STAY AWAY - they will scam you
STAY AWAY! These people are pirates. The business model is to lure with low prices and then recoup the price difference to others (and more) through made up charges upon return of the car.
My branch was Caldera car rental at Chania airport, Crete (a Europcar branch). They will try anything from fuel to damage to soiling to charge you extra - lots extra. Expect long disputes where they push and argue to the point where you have to agree or miss your plane. Expect threatening behaviour from a large group of them. Their price may seem cheaper, but by the time you’ve paid all the made-up charges you will wish you had never heard of them. Vultures!
Do yourself a favour and go elsewhere for your car rental.
AVOID AVOID AVOID! Europcar corfu.
We have used europcar before with no problems but Greece is different. Reading some of the other reviews it seems we were lucky we only got charged €175 on return for a tiny bit of red paint on the door that will probably wipe off. They are crooks who will steal your money. Of course they are not going to get it repaired they probably mark over it and wipe it off when you return the car. Also they don't actually have any of their own cars they rent you one from another company. I wait to see if I can get the money back through my excess insurance but we will never ever use company again. Stay well clear!!!
Don’t use Europcar in Greece!
We have just returned from our annual trip to Greece - we hired a car from Europcar for use in Paros through Greeka.com. When we received the booking voucher from Greeka.com nowhere on the paperwork does it state Europcar and the branding in the local office was 'Yours Car Rental' and 'Abbey' but the T&Cs on the booking from definitely states that these two companies are franchises of Europcar.
Anyway - every year I ask for extra CDW and every year they ignore me or say its not available. Well this year the car, which was is very poor condition to start with (it has already done over 36,000km), got damaged in a car park while we were having lunch. I immediately took the car to the rental company and paid over 500 Euros for the repair and the admin fees!
We all know the car will never fixed - they have made a lot of money our of our misery - we will never use the company or its franchises again
Don't touch Europcar with a barge pole. They're thieves!
We hired a car in Corfu. We should have, but did not, walk round with the rep whilst he checked the highly polished newish car. Big mistake! After six years of using eurpocar with no problems at all we had become too trusting. We drove from Corfu airport to Benistes, about a 15 minutes drive, for a coffee and to take in the view as we do every year. As soon as I got out of the car and closed my door on the front passenger side I noticed the dent on the door. It was not large, had not gone inwards very far and the panel was not creased. I.e. it could be pushed back into place leaving no trace. It was completely unmissable. There is no possible way that it could be missed during an inspection. I knew immediately that it had been overlooked by Europcar intentionally. 10 days later I found out how right I was.
When the car was hired to us it was spotlessly clean and the bodywork was polished yet they did not spot the dent. When we returned the car, dirty from dust, sand, mud and birds droppings they spotted the dent immediately.
Unfortunately, during the holiday, we did mark the car in 2 places. The first was a very, very small vertical scratch on the side rim of the drivers door. About 3cm long and 2mm wide. We were informed that that Europcar would have to respray the whole door!! Really! The second was a long horizontal mark from the top of the back wheel rim to the top of the front wheel rim on the passenger side. Probably caused by driving too close to shrubs overhanging on of Corfu's horrendous roads. Europcar agreed that no damage was caused to the panel or paint work. It just needed to be polished. For all this we were charged €300. Absolutely criminal. The people working there have used underhanded tactics to make extra money. In the end you will lose out because tourists will go elsewhere. We will definitely never use them again. I always had a high regard for the Greek people. Friendly, easy going and decent. This has upset me greatly as I feel like I was robbed. I REALLY DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY EASYJET ASSOCIATE THEMSELVES WITH EUROPCAR BECAUSE, AS I HAS SINCE FOUND OUT, EUROPCAR HAVE AN ATROCIOUS REPUTATION.
A tale of two halves!
We booked with Europcar via Easyjet to pick up a Nissan Note at Heraklion Airport. It did not start well. Even though we'd checked the insurance situation before we booked (and booked separate extra insurance for CDW and all that stuff), the extremely rude guy at the counter tried to pressure us into paying an extra €110 for insurance, saying that if we didn't we could be liable for thousands. When we explained that we'd already got insurance, he tried to claim that it wouldn't cover a thing. As we weren't falling for his awful fear and intimidation tactics, he then informed us that we'd have to leave a €1,000 damage deposit (something which was never mentioned in the booking process), all the while being thoroughly unpleasant.
He then finally brought the car around, and seemed really hacked off that we were actually going to go round and check it. Even in the dark we could see the car was a total mess. Their were scratches on every single panel, and chips on the windscreen, damage to the wheels, you name it, it was damaged. The final straw was when we noticed the drivers side headlight was out. He'd tried to cover it up by putting them on full beam, but thankfully I realised. After a lot of complaining we were finally given a different car, but this was still a s***heap!
2 days later and we got a warning light saying the engine was overheating! I called the main office number, fully expecting a fight, but to my massive surprise they were great!! They said they'd come out with a replacement car within 40 mins, and actually did (particularly impressive given that we were in the middle of nowhere)!! What's more the car they gave us was pretty new, much bigger than the one we had, and was all around a lovely car.
I still wouldn't use Europcar again, based on the horrendous tactics used by the guy at the airport (oh, and he was also really rude to our lovely villa owner who'd come to guide us back to the villa). However, maybe if you're able to use the main office in Heraklion you'll have a much better experience, as I really can't fault their handling of the problem, and the lovely car we ended up in.
AbbyCar Airport didn't accept my credit card !
Hi, AbbyCar Airport didn't accept my credit card because it was written "debit" on it, which means Credit Card with immediate debit, but it's really a credit card. I always book car with this card and never had this kind of issue. The people at the balcony didn't even try my card, they just refused it. I tried to explain during 30 min that it was a credit card and that it's not because it's written "debit" that it's a debit card, I know what is the difference. Then I call ma bank to check that my card was really a credit card, my bank account manager confirmed to me that it was a credit card, so I asked to him to explain this to the car provider. then persons at the balcony have then been talk with their manager and the manager explained me that my bank account manager could be a liar... It was a complete lack of respect to me and my bank.
So I've been to another car rental, and they confirmed to me that my card was a credit card and they blocked the caution with success without any issue. It took 10 min
Never book with ABBYCAR !
Distressing
We booked a car via Auto Holidays on line and selected the comprehensive insurance which was from a reputable company.
On arrival at Abbycar the man told us we only had basic insurance and needed to take out their excess policy. I showed him the printout of or excess policy but he said it wouldn’t cover the cost of the car. I explained that it was meant to cover the excess which it easily did.
He then said it wouldn’t pay their fees. He said if I got the,’tiniest mark’ I would be charged 70euros plus150 euros admin per mark and that my policy didn’t cover those admin fees.
I phoned my insurance company and I guess they saw how stressed I was and they told me to go with their insurance and they would reimburse me.
We were given no paper work or insurance policy but told they would not be checking the car on return.
The car we were given was from Europcar and every panel had multiple scratches making it almost impossible to detect new ones. The side light was also broken.
As I was photographing the damage the man came running out telling me not to do that as they wouldn’t be checking the car on return as I had paid their,’insurance’. He then told me I would need to pay for damage to the tyres.
We were given no insurance policy, no info on returning the car no breakdown contact and no info on the type of fuel.
We returned the car to Abbycar but a lady from Europcar took it back and signed it off. She said the problem had been with going through a broker and next time to deal with them directly because brokers didn’t understand their fees. So far Auto Holidays have been great and I bet they are a bit upset to read that the hire companies they work with don’t appreciate their business.
I feel we have been taken for a ride by Abby car and it caused us a lot of distress which they have not acknowledged.

Europcar near Chania airport
We paid online in advance and were expecting a new vehicle "similar to a Nissan micra." What we got was a suzuki lalana which could not have been younger than 16yrs old judging by the shape (the Greek number plate meant that I couldn't tell exactly.) It had clearly been in more scrapes than the A-team van which was kind of a relief because I thought at least that a company like Europcar wouldn't screw me upon returning the car by alleging that I'd caused any of that damage.
We came to love the car over the two weeks we had it (named it Clarkson cos it was old and starred in Top Gear.) Clarkson was fitted with fully working air con which had to be turned off when climbing Crete's hillier terrain and acted like a boost button when so operated.
We thought that the Europcar staff when we collected the car were bad but the man who dealt with us on the return to Chania airport was the most obnoxious, rude man we'd encountered all holiday. For no reason whatsoever he laughed at our choice of accommodation and the location of it. He was deliberately offensive aplarently only for his own amusement and in our opinion ignorant although we did not care to share that opinion with him.
The holiday was lovely and the car really grew on us but what a shame that it all ended with a bad flavour.
Was charged £4000 for an accident!
Was charged £4000 for an accident as i had used my credit card to rent a car. I didnt have a driving license so my mate drove. We were in an accident and they basically stole money out of my account. Barclays bank did nothing and i lost the money. AVOID this company and for that fact BARCLAYS bank unless you want to be ripped off
Would never touch Europcar again
Would never touch Europcar again! Booked through Easyjet late last summer after seeing every box ticked for insurance including collision damage waivers etc. Handler at Heraklion Airport insisted I take out extra insurance when I declined she insisted I sign a notice saying I had refused it and advised I was not insured. Obviously letting me drive the car away was a giveaway that I was insured but my wife was nervous so once at the resort we didn’t drive the car again during our 2 week holiday. I immediately contacted Europcar in UK the morning after arrival & got an email back saying I would hear – I did 10 days later to say they were looking into it. We drove the car back to the airport at the end of the holiday where I complained to the manager who was called to the office – I needed this like a hole in the head on arrival back at the airport. The manager sidestepped everything. The mileage I used proved we didn’t use the car during our stay – getting taxi’s instead. On return home I had emails back & forth with Europcar in the UK who bailed out saying they were merely agents for the Crete operation & could do nothing and couldn’t comment on what I had advised them despite all the emails, mileage etc. They are absolutely useless to deal with & I would strongly advise against using them – save yourself the headache and the pressure and stress of dealing with them. They have no idea about customer satisfaction and their complaint procedure is a total wearing down and time consuming process.

September 2017.
It was on September 11, 2017 in Thessaloniki (airport office, 2 km from the airport). I booked vehicle in advance and I went to pick it up, however I did not get it. They asked for the international driver licence !!! I spoke to their office (Kaddy, Europecar in Thessaloniki) 3 times before I came to Greece and no one mentioned that to me. They knew that I am coming from Canada and I do not understand why they did not say anything about it. I am their customer for god sake !
Also, as soon as I left their office I went to another rent a car company and I did not have any problem with my Canadian drivers licence. I asked them: :" Do I need an international drivers licence and they said "No, it is OK" ??!!
The lady that works for Eurpocar did not even to talk to me about it. She just said: " No you cannot get the vehicle. I do not want to loose my job" and that was it ! I traveled around 8,000 kilometers and I reserved my vehicle well in advance and spoke to them 3 times and this almost totally ruined my vacation !!! I had much, much better experience with "Advance" rent - a -car (next door company).
