Beware of Trusting Unneutered Dogs to Their Care
I spoke with the owner prior to choosing Bow Wow House as our daycare and let him know that our puppy was not yet spayed. He assured me that it was not an issue, that if she went into season before she was spayed, she would be kept separate from unneutered males. When she did go into season before her spaying appointment, I let the owner and the staff know. I also sent a fresh female diaper with her every day, which covered everything and would render mating impossible.
But Bow Wow House did not keep her separated and did not regularly use the pants that I sent. Even worse than this gross misconduct and negligence, they then went on to hide the fact that she had mated and lied to me when I became suspicious, assuring me that it was not possible that she had mated. Had they been truthful, our puppy could have been taken to the vet and given a jab to sort it, but their deception forced a seven-month-old puppy to carry the pregnancy to term.
She was a growing puppy that had gone through a season so all the changes could be attributed to that. Even the vet could not tell that she was pregnant and asked us to come back in a couple of weeks. Then I felt something move in our puppy’s abdomen one Wednesday night, the next morning the vet confirmed the pregnancy with a sonogram and that it was too late to do anything about it. Six hours later our puppy was in labour. We had no idea what to do, no supplies and the puppies had received no prenatal care.
We contacted the daycare via email, notifying them that we had just found out that our puppy was pregnant and asking for a list of all of the unneutered males that they kept with her while she was in season. The vet was concerned as the pups were large and our puppy was small. They thought she may need a caesarean and needed to know the breed of the possible fathers to help determine what we might be dealing with. The owner of Bow Wow House called at the end of the day; he expressed shock and disgust that this had happened at his establishment and assured me that they would reimburse me for all expenses. He also said that the member of staff who told me it was not possible that our puppy had gotten pregnant, eventually confessed. He claimed that the dogs had mixed whilst being transferred from the van to the paddock and that a Jack Russell had mated with our puppy. This employee, however, was never required to say why he chose to conceal this every single day. Why he lied about it, forcing a seven-month-old puppy to carry the pregnancy to term, endangering the health of a puppy I was paying Bow Wow House to care for.
The owner sent a picture of the Jack Russell along with his weight. Fred, the Jack Russell, was only 7.8kg, so it was odd that the pups were large. I recognised Fred from photos the daycare regularly sent to our puppy’s group WhatApp chat. When I went back through the chat’s history, I found multiple pictures of Fred running loose with our dog, on multiple days whilst she was in season. It had not been some one-off accident in the paddock as was claimed, but rather standard operating procedure for this unneutered dog to be kept with our in-season puppy.
The owner was true to his word and did reimburse me for all of the expenses, though that did not cover any of the pain, stress and suffering caused to my family or to our puppy. Our puppy was too young to be a proper mum, so the responsibility of keeping the pups alive fell to me. We were back and forth to the vet in the beginning as the pups had received no prenatal care and were poorly.
As the pups grew, it became more and more obvious that a Jack Russel was not the father of all, if any. The vet said that it was highly unlikely that a Jack Russell was the father of all and that we may be dealing with multiple fathers. I reached out to the owner after being told this and he continued to insist that the Jack Russell was the sole father. So, we had one of the pups DNA tested via the Wisdom Panel and it came back that a 100% purebred English Cocker Spaniel was the father of that pup.
I do not understand how Bow Wow House could lie about the size of the father when our puppy’s life was in danger due to the size of the pups. There seems to be no end to the deceit and depravity. Bow Wow House has a duty to care for the animals, but instead, they abused my puppy in the most disgusting way. At least two dogs, if not more, were allowed to mate with our puppy. I am also sure that the owners of these unneutered males are not aware that their dogs are being allowed to breed at this daycare.
The owner said that he fired the members of staff responsible and that he is selling the business, but I cannot be certain if anything they say is true, and I feel compelled to speak up as I would be complicit if I keep quiet and allowed this nightmare to happen to someone else.
I have emails/WhatsApp messages/DNA report to back this all up.
