I have tried using the BIGBin in Killybegs, Donegal, several times now, and almost every single time has been a massive disappointment.
The idea is good on paper. It is a pay as you go option for extra waste with separate bins for food, recycling, and general waste.
The problem is that in reality it is often a total disaster, mainly due to the complete lack of basic decency and civic sense of the people using it.
First off, in my experience, the food and recycling bins are frequently out of order.
Sometimes they are broken, sometimes full, and sometimes they just do not work.
So you are left with only the blue general waste bin, and that is where the real nightmare begins.
There is always some ignorant person who shoves absolutely anything in there with zero respect for the environment, the rules, or basic manners.
Badly tied bags that burst open, stuff jammed and wedged in tight, things that clearly should not go in there, objects blocking the mechanism, and rubbish dumped in a way that makes the space impossible to use properly. You name it, it’s there.
The result is that the next customer pays their money, the hatch opens, and there is basically no room left because it is all clogged up or filled with badly disposed rubbish from some rude person before you.
The worst part is that this reflects a broader mentality I see around here all the time.
They just do not care.
They mix everything up and throw it all in together without the slightest regard for the basic principles of recycling or not polluting, which should be second nature by now.
When this is the mentality, it’s a mess and a service like this is ruined regardless, at least for those of us who actually care.
Also ‘cause the internal capacity is already limited as it is.
You can barely fit a couple of standard black bags, so for the amount you actually get to dispose of, the price is not exactly cheap.
But even that is secondary to the real frustration.
You pay, you waste your time, and then you end up having to call to complain and ask for a refund.
And here is the other issue.
The response I have received multiple times is always the same.
They say that unfortunately they cannot do anything about people misusing the bins or jamming things inside.
Seriously? Is it normal for a service supposedly aimed at responsible waste management to just wash its hands of the problem like that?
You even have “CCTV in operation” written there.
What for?
If there is no monitoring and nobody steps in when the system is being abused, the service fails.
There are already very few convenient and structured alternatives like proper recycling centres.
After several experiences like this, I have stopped using the service entirely.
Not recommended until things change.
It is a shame, because the idea could have worked.

Something is off with big bin code checker online, I called them about it's not working and there a dude picked up the phone who sounded like those scammers he asked me to tell him a code so he could check it for me, I didn't tell him. It's been two months it's not working and weird here is that big bin doesn't check their security that long time, it's really weird... I copied my review so it would reach to big bin eventually.

​You have to love the irony of a company on Trustpilot where the owners are caught leaving 5-star reviews for themselves. It’s a bold strategy, I’ll give you that!
​If you’re looking for "transparency," maybe look elsewhere. The management here also runs Glass Bag Recycling Ltd (Glassbag.ie), where it seems one of the directors couldn't help but give himself a glowing review without mentioning he actually owns the place.
​Considering Big Bin is sitting at a 2.1-star rating with endless complaints about missed collections and "ghost" customer service, maybe spending more time on the bins and less time on the "fake" reviews would be a better plan?
​If you want a company that doesn't need to write its own fan mail, I’d suggest a real waste company like Panda. At least with them, the "trust" isn't a DIY project.

Bin is not operating. Had to call and go through a reset procedure. I only want a service which works and I really do not want to know about resetting the machine . Not my problem!

Paid to use at Compactor didn't work rang for refund asked to send proof I did and several emails since no response. When i went into the store at the site its on staff said it barely ever works they get alot of complaints. Stay away from these not worth the lucky dip in whether it will work or not.

Absolutely useless service, bins spend more time broken.. can't understand how they are still in business.

I went to use the only location near me, tallaght and to my suprise there was no bins there. Tired to contact about a refund but all messages and emails keep bouncing back. COMPLETE SCAM

Updated the review from a 1-star, as I was finally able to use the nearest waste and recycling bins (it was out of order for a long time).
The person on the phone was helpful.

4 stars due to no replies to e-mails or Whatsapp messages.

I'm a visitor on holiday in a motorhome so I was relying on this 'service', or so called service!

For my first use I drove some distance to a bin shown on the website at Ballina. Only there was no bin. It had been removed whilst building works were in progress.

Why then was it shown on the website as available?

Second attempt today on the N81 south west of Dublin. Hooray! There is a bin. Enter code, fill with rubbish, press enter, drum closes. Enter second code. Drum opens. Still full of my first load of rubbish!

I called the helpline number on the bin at 7.45pm. A recorded message advised that the helpline was closed and to seek help from the adjacent store.

The store was very helpful but had no means of assisting me and didn't understand why the helpline was unmanned.

I returned to the bin to find the drum now closed. Re-entering my second code was pointless. It was rejected presumably because the bin had failed to register that the drum had not been emptied.

The ground around the bin was very dirty with what appeared to be spilt oil. And the bin itself was far from clean. Clearly no scheduled servicing is carried out.

Apart from all this, the service is great!!

"Your payment couldn’t be processed because your order total has changed. Check your order total and try again." I tried again and it wouldn't work

I bought a ticket about 18:30 Friday 15 September 2023 on the Ennis Road in Limerick. I entered the code many times. The machine failed to operate. I asked the shop assistant to guide me. No refund was possible, he suggested calling the mobile number on the machine and was sympathetic, but unable to help. The assistant observed that other people had similar experiences. I called the mobile number. The message said I was next in the queue so I waited. In the end, I was no longer in a queue. The message suggested I leave a phone message. I left a message. I waited some more time thinking the service personnel would call back and assist. This did not happen. I received a call from a Waterford number 14 hours later on the Saturday morning. The Bigbin person spoke the customer service language you come to expect. I made alternative waste disposal arrangements. Apparently, it is not possible to give a zero rating here.
So, BigBin contacted trustpilot on 30 November, seeking to verify if my experience was real and offering a refund. The message reads: "Really sorry that you had this experience at one of our locations. Refunds should have been processed by the store. We would be more than happy to remedy this for you. Please call 0866047147 and we will be able to sort you out"
BigBin does not seem to understand, I got no refund or assistance at the point it would have had any meaning to me i.e. in the hour of purchase of the voucher and the failure of the bin to work. A call from a distant customer sale representative 14 hours later did not help me, a refund is of no use because I wasted 45 minutes of time and experienced frustration not specifically because of the price of the voucher but because of the inadequate response of the first two BigBin people I encountered, the guy in the shop and the guy on the phone.
In addition, an email many weeks later seeking to verify that my experience was real is an insult. I phoned their number within minutes of purchase of the voucher, they have my number because they called me 14 hours later - that is my verification that the experience was a real one.
BigBin suggests I call their number above and have a discussion; this seems reasonable, except I had an unanswered call to them on the date stated, a conversation with the guy in the shop and another chat with their rep on the phone 14 hours after my experience. How much interaction is necessary to get a bag of refuse in a bin?
BigBin ought to label its customer service LittleBin.

Very good in theory but we bought two recycling tokens and the machine did not recognise either number. BIGbin Support was not interested in receiving the feedback

So handy every time. The last time when I got there, something was stuck in it. Rang the phone number on the bin. They fixed it remotely in seconds. Very pleasant and obliging on the phone. Great service...

Big bin circle k Ballina first time use - entered the code and nothing - the bags didn’t move and the system shut down, kind man in forecourt gave me another code which again didn’t work. Crappy system.

Put some constructive feedback on social media that they appear to be reporting each time. No point in trying to smack down genuine feedback because it's not what you want to hear. Won't work long term.

If I could leave zero stars I would. Absolutely shocking service. Turned up to Big bin in Circle K in Tallaght with black bin in my boot. On way to work on hottest day of the year. Paid €8 for a ticket and scratched the code. Bin opens up and reveals two bin bags already in the slot where I should have put mine. Circle K tell me to phone the number on the bin, which I did, 3 times. No answer and still no call back. Got a second ticket on the off chance the bins would dispose from the slot only to find them still there the second time. Totally unreliable service and zero customer services. Never again

Obviously this is not your everyday rubbish, when you’ve missed bin day this should be your ideal solution.
It isn’t. And there’re many reasons why.
I searched online, found this site, signed up, €10 credit (€8 for rubbish so I’m already scammed for €2) arrived up to dump two bins, nothing unusual until I see there’re bins already in the loader.
Log in anyway (very quick and easy), maybe it’ll reset??
Then it tells me it’ll open and weigh my bags (weigh???? website says 2x 80l bags, not heavy so I don’t mind). I wait and wait, nothing happens and it tells me there’s an error and now my account is only €2 in credit.
I’ve rubbish in my car, driven from home, paid my money and I’m still stuck, shafted!!!
Called the mobile number… no answer.
How can retailers put up with this on their forecourts? Attracting rubbish, not being emptied and pissing off their customers.
Ask a neighbour for help, don’t bother with these guys.
Off to try get my refund now!
