Bad experience with customer service and was not disclosed of a fee being non refundable before paying

My experience with best student halls is that I enquired on their website and was reached out to by a representative. On the website the property I tried to book was listed as having a £250 deposit. Upon reaching out, the representative sent me a link to a “verified booking fee” which was £250 to pay. In the page linked it said “pay now to secure your room” - once I paid the £250 + fees I was sent a link to a page to pay the actual deposit on a separate website. Keep in mind that beststudenthalls is an “online student marketplace” (as described by the managing director) with a service fee of £250 (or maybe it differs depending on the property) . When I told the representative that I did not want to pay £250 twice when it was described as only £250 to secure a room I was told the booking fee is “non refundable” - only after I had paid. My messages asking for a refund were responded to with the representative telling me “it is non refundable” and it’s a “one time service fee you have to pay”. After that my messages were ignored. The next day I went into their office listed on google - 15 Stratton street. The receptionists there told me that they had moved out of their office a few months ago and that other people had come in looking for them. I called their customer service number listed on google “ 020 3095 8888” several times and it did not go through. One I got back I left a review calling beststudenthalls a scam - my experience of having £250 taken from me, told I could not get a refund after I had paid, and having no point of contact to them was all my experience. Then I get an email from , the managing director, telling me that my review was defamatory and untrue - he agreed to give me a refund and that he could expedite it if I took my review down. He told me he had been running his business for 13 years, how 15 Stratton street is a “virtual” office done for SEO purposes, and how he does not outsource his employees. He said he would get a tech team to look into why my calls did not go through. & also their team is actually based out of 1 Fore Street Avenue, in Moorgate. Then he proceeded to tell me that my previous review, that used the language “scam” “disgusting” “targeting students” fits the legal definition of libel and gives grounds to
“ Request immediate removal of the review
Send a formal cease and desist
And, if necessary, pursue legal action for reputational harm and business loss.”
There is another review on Trustpilot saying that best studenthalls refused to issue a refund unless they deleted a bad review, and other reviews on feeling misled by the booking fee VS deposit commotion.
I got my refund, but still felt like I should give an accurate description of my experience using beststudenthalls. I did not appreciate the threats of legal action from the managing director, and want to emphasise that there is a separate service fee you have to pay prior to booking a room and paying an actual deposit.
Did not have a particularly good experience. I recommend that beststudenthalls clarifies that their “verified booking fee” is separate for the deposit to fully secure the property and non refundable BEFORE any students pay. They should also update their location and phone number on google in case people want to contact them directly. They should also look into improving their customer service as I cannot imagine why any representative trying to take me through the booking process should ignore my messages after failing to disclose that a fee is non refundable. And take a less inflammatory tone when speaking to customers who had a negative experience.

Unhelpful
Was dealing with BSH in regards to Hox Park in Egham. I should have gone direct than go through this company. Inactive phone lines and unhelpful staff. Kept getting fobbed off when asked what has gone on with my refund and not kept in the loop.

He Is a Dubious and Cunning Individual Don't Deal With Him
I am a Nigerian, and I must inform and warn the general public not to transact any business with this person, Krishmendu Basu, as he is dubious and unscrupulous.
He is not worthy of trust. He is not in the UK; rather, he is based in India, where he carries out his fraudulent activities. He promised to refund £50 of my payment in July 2025, and as at December 2025 there has always been one story or excuse after another instead of the refund.I am warning the general public not to deal with this fraudster.
He will not answer to my calls and respond to my messages.
