Unprofessional moderators
Unprofessional moderators, who rule with absolute power, have ruined this site. I even had one who disciplined me in a forum because I answered someones question after she had closed the discussion, after which I sent a private message to the person, answering their question, and the moderator, somehow opened up my private messages and lectured me again! The problem is these "moderators" are also allowed to participate in the forums and you're not allowed to question them, which should not be allowed. They should have to pick one or the other and stick to it. I no longer contribute there for this reason.
I'm a language professional
I'm a language professional, when I search for translations I don't need machine translated crap, and the site can't even find common Swedish words in their glossary
High-handed moderators
High-handed moderators. Contributors with little or no linguistic knowledge. What was a fairly decent site has become a translation vehicle for Asian learners, and a forum for a handful of regulars who have an opinion on everything.
limited function, inferior to other translators
terrible, it can only translate a single word and very rarely a phrase, without the ability to teach how to properly input the word into a sentence, wordreference is much inferior to other translators that can conjugate any phrase, word, or sentence
Very poor moderation
Very poor moderation, unfortunately. Valid posts getting deleted left and right. Non-native speakers being treated as second-rate users. Two of their moderators, Glasguensis and Tegs, just love deleting people's posts, where so many posts of their own just make little to no sense. I doubt it ever crosses their mind that they're actually hurting users when they delete their perfectly valid posts.
WordReference SUCKS!
I echo what another person said about some moderators. In my opinion, it seems they delete posts for "chatting" by people they don't like but leave the same "chat" posts from people they do like, and then suspend you for reporting them. In general, it appears they seem to ban or suspend some people but not others for the same actions. The reasons they give are laughable and highly objective. I have noticed an anti-American sentiment on this site as well. I have also noticed that people who can barely speak a language are allowed to comment on threads and offer their, usually terrible, advice.
Nobody who can comment is accredited, so "know-it-alls" run rampant on the site. All of this combined really makes the site have a hostile and unwelcoming vibe. For instance there was a post on "bra snapping." Not a single female user commented on the post, so it was just a bunch of gross men guessing about female things. Also on many posts you may need, for example, a Dominican word but in the thread you get guesses from Spaniards and Chileans about what a Dominican might say.
Their own privacy policy states:
"What do I do if I disagree with a moderator action?
Discussions about moderator or administrator actions are welcome via email or Private Conversation, but should not be discussed in the public forums. This is out of respect for the members and moderators involved." I contacted the moderators via private message and they simply don't respond or they turn off the "allow future messages."
It is a dictionary outdated
It is a dictionary with outdated terms, full of stupid questions and and stupid answers. The most competitive helpers are in the French and German forums. The English Spanish Vocabulary is a mess. A lot of people who are not native speakers and without an education in English giving their twisted translations. Insane. It is a sad show. One thing should be noted. If you become a member and post in the English-Spanish forum you will notice: # 1 moderators are not americans.
#2 a lot of people who participate answering your questions are not from the USA originally. You can't help but notice a coldness towards posters who are from US. The moderators can't hide their envy and hate of everything having to do with America/ US. And don't dare to show them a little bit of knowledge if you hail from the USA. They won't be able to bear that and sooner or later if you don't mind you p's and q's very well you'll be banned. they simply are haters of anything Americana
My reference page to look for translations and examples of use
My reference page to look for translations and examples of use, especially in English, I have used it little for other languages, but for English I like it a lot.
Useful website
Useful website. Pretentious forum. But as long as I don't visit that it's fine
uso il dizionario ai fini di studio
uso il dizionario ai fini di studio. mi trovo molto bene
Use it almost daily
The pronunciations, the IPA transcription, the synonyms and antonyms, the distinction between American and British English, all of these are extremely useful as a second language learner.
If anything, I'd love to see a better support for slang words (the forum is ok but other sites like Urban Dictionary or Google Search are usually better)
i looked up what cest means in french…
i looked up what cest means in french and it says "what time will be we shouting at" lol dont use this website. my teacher said we cant even use google translate and we have to use this. i really hate this website just dont use it.
une référence en la matière
une référence en la matière, outil indispensable pour sa précision. Très bon forum d'entraide!
Be extremely CAUTIOUS about using this website !!!
Web companies are obliged to offer a simple way for visitors to opt out of all cookies on their sites. Wordreference makes it impossible to do this, by the disingenuous act of listing dozens upon dozens of commercial companies where each one requires an individual opt-out or, worse still, you have to write to that company especially to demand they don't harvest your information.
To see how this works, I suggest you don't simply click on the 'I accept' tag after 'We value your privacy'. Instead, click on 'Show purposes' and you will then understand how you are being duped into having virtually no choice of opting out. To expect you to go through the lists of dozens (371 in total!) of sites taking your information is ridiculous. And illegal in most countries respecting the rights of online users.
And this is why Wordreference.com is registered in Panama. Panama is renowned for hosting unscrupulous, scamming and other dangerous websites which don't adhere to universal regulations governing the safe use of websites.
Wordreference says 'we value your privacy', and this does not only mean they 'respect' your privacy, but in fact the more sinister meaning that they monetise your private information. I suspect that Wordreference is earning money by charging these 371 commercial entities for placing cookies and harvesting your private information. And hence their determination that visitors will not opt out!
You have been warned! I for one will never use Wordreference again, and will look for a more honest, regulation-complying site for word translation.
The Worst Translator I've Ever Seen
Possibly the worst translator I've ever seen. It doesn't do full sentences, it's so tedious, and there's little to no way to know if your translation is even correct with the 1 sentence of context. Fix your website, please.
