Great tailored wear!

Spier and mackay has the best tailored wear and dress shirts for the money. their knits are also top notch. They’re my go to for tailored trousers in a variety of fabrics for each season. The customer service team has been very helpful, even going so far as to extend a return policy due to a shipping issue.

Unbelievable quality for the money

I took a chance as a first-time customer, and I online-purchased an “on sale” RTW suit in Spier & Mackay’s standard/basic line, in a playful colour, with my best guess at fit based on my measurements. The suit arrived smartly packaged, and when I tried it on, I was completely blown away. The ratio of quality-to-price is quite possibly the very best in the entire menswear industry, bar none. The fit of the suit was impeccable with almost no need for alterations (noting that I’m a 39” chest, and I went with a 40” slim). There’s no other way to say it: the quality of fabric and construction was simply outstanding at the price point. Specifically, the Dino Filarte Super 110 is a very nice, entirely serviceable, comfortable and seemingly durable fabric, and the level of quality that you get for a suit with this fabric at their sale prices of approximately $200-$300 USD is unheard of. Even at full price of $400-$500, you’d be getting outstanding value. There is literally no reason for anyone to ever buy a department store suit ever again as long as Spier and Mackay exists and offers quality like this. Similarly, the prices of Spier & McKay’s higher-end fabric offerings have me seriously questioning the logic of ever spending the kind of money I’d have spent in the past on higher-end RTW suits… it seems like a case of diminishing returns. I’ll wrap this up by reiterating that I’m an ordinary customer with no affiliation to Spier & Mackay, taking the time this review solely because I am so utterly impressed, something that is rare for me with any company. I’ve since ordered more from them, and I truly hope they can keep this up.

Stay away from this rotten company

I never write negative reviews but feel obligated, in order to warn potential customers to stay away from this company.

Their measurements are inaccurate. I ordered a pair of trousers in a 28 waist. They claim the trousers can be adjusted 1.5” inches. When the trousers arrive the waist was looser than size 30 or even 32 pants. Their size charts are hidden inside a link on the detail page, displaying the disclaimer than actual measurements are much larger in tiny, grey, non accessible font.

I took them to a tailor but now the back pockets touch, making them unwearable.

This all would have been forgivable if it were not for the extremely rude, unhelpful customer service. The customer service lead shifted the blame entirely onto me, without offering so much as an apology.

Spier and Mackay’s anti-consumer policies and horrible customer service have no place in the 21st century.

Stay away from this company and stick to brands that have a brick and mortar presence, who stand behind the products they sell.

Edit: You can see how the company responded to me below, taking a defensive position and putting the blame on the customer. A lot things have changed in the business landscape from earlier this year. I'm not going to sit here and gloat about how the tariff situation affected this company, but it provides a cautionary tale. If your only value prop to the customer is low prices while skimping on customer support, you're not going to have longevity as a business because you're going to lose customer trust. Spier&Mackay, I wish your company the best and hope you learn something valuable from this.

We’re sorry to hear you were disappointed with your experience, and we appreciate the opportunity to clarify a few key points for any customers who may be reading this.

Our sizing information is clearly listed on every product page via the Size & Fit Guide, which specifially notes that our garment measurements are different from standard vanity sizing. A size 28 Slim trouser, for example, is designed to fit a natural waist measurement of approximately 28", but the garment itself will measure slightly larger (about 30") to account for comfort and tailoring flexibility. This is standard practice in tailoring and is noted in our guide, and this is not hidden away in a non-accessible font.

When you first reached out to our team on March 10, our representative responded promptly and explained this sizing approach in detail. After you mentioned on March 14 that your waist measurement is actually 26", we further clarified that in this case, a size 28 would indeed be too large, and we could have better assisted with size recommendations had we known your exact measurements earlier in the process.

As you ordered a hemmed pair of final sale trousers, we were limited in how we could assist with returns, but we did our best to provide clarity and support throughout. Our intent was never to shift blame, but rather to explain our sizing philosophy and how we might have helped select a better fit had more details been available from the start. Additionally, we very clearly state not to hem or alter garments if your a first time customer or unsure of your fit/measurements. If you took to trousers to a reputable tailor and they did not fit as intended, you should have reached out before having them altered.

The issue seems to be you had the garment poorly altered and still expected us to offer a return. Our advice was to reach out to a tailor first to get a correct opinion before having any work done. The tailor should have advised that they would be taking in more than 1.5", and thus causing the issue, rather than just going ahead with the work and leaving you unsatisfied.

We understand your frustration, but this situation has more to do with your communication with your tailor rather than the garment or our service. Again, Our advice was to speak to a tailor first, not simply having the work done without proper communication.

We 100% stand behind the products we sell, and we have for over 15 years.

In reviewing the email chain, we could not find any instance where our reps were rude or unhelpful.

We're always happy to help customers choose the right size—especially when specific body measurements are provided in advance.

I am gender non-conforming

I am gender non-conforming, so my proportions don't always fit suits easily. I ordered and paid for three suits, hoping to try them on and keep one. They refused to send the suits to me, it was flagged for "fraud" because I would likely be returning some of the suits. I know re-stocking can be costly for a business, but there was no mention of a limit on returns in their policies (I checked carefully before ordering). I was honest with the customer service representative, but they were not helpful. This whole experience was very frustrating, apparently my money is no good at Spier and Mackay.

Ordered shirt 12/13/25. Given to DHL 1/9/25.DHL gave to USPS 1/30/25, the it disappears. Have called Spiers twice. They never called back. Guess I'm out $100.

My first order with this company- WOW

My first order with this company. Ordered 3 corduroy pants from them, turned out too small. Emailed their return email for a return label 4 separate times over multiple days with no reply. Called customer service number and when I hit the option for the return section the call cuts off and when I called back for the customer service option no one answers. Loved the company’s response to previous negative reviews that since there are minimal reviews for them on Trustpilot therefore the negative reviews are not valid 😮? I guess a 100,000 fake reviews would be more valid? Not sure how the company stays in business with this kind of customer service and flippant attitude toward their customers.

stripe shirts

I bought two stripe shirts, unfortunately the stripe at level of the cuff are not parallel to the edge of the cuff, I had not prevent spier & Mackey about this problem, the second time I bought four stripe shirts, they have all the same problem, I sent an email to this company, unfortunately they told that :

Thank you for following up with more clarification! I do now see what you are referring to, this is our standard cuff style for our off the rack shirts, it is similar to a cone, which has a circular aspect to it. For the MTO shirt you have pictured, the Mitered cuff option was selected, this would change how the cuffs are cut and aligned. This would explain why you are seeing this across the board in off the rack shirts.

If you are not a fan of this style, it may be best to opt for custom/MTO for future shirt orders.

I bought other Italian shirt with conical cuff and I haven't this problem, I think if Geometrically the form of the cuff was well made, they can avoid the unparallel stripe at the edge of the cuff.

I think I'll not buy another stripe shirts from this company.

Zero customer service

I would give a zero but that's not a choice. I have been trying to contact this company about placing an order for almost a week using their online customer service number. Nobody ever answers the phone. I wouldn't dare order from them. What would happen if I had a problem and couldn't get in touch with them?

The lines get tied up from call volume, but you are prompted to leave a message and the team diligently checks the messages and gets back to customers by the next business day. Alternatively, you can always send an email. That's how a majority of our 120k+ customers tend to reach us, and emails are responded to within 24 hours, save for weekends.

Increasingly Poor Quality Clothing

I recently bought a Black Short Sleeve Polo - Shirt with Collar 8960-3C3P1-L and it was of the very poorest quality. While the Polo was said to be made of cotton but unfortunately it was actually made of polyester, smell petrol.

Sorry for your experience. We can assure you the polo is 100% Cotton. We lab test all our products for composition, washing and strength. This polo is made from a high twist 2-Ply 60s yarn, so very different in feel from the traditional polos like Lacoste or RL Polo. it's much drier and smoother in feel, and understandably be mistaken for another fibre. We saw this as a quality IMPROVEMENT over traditional polos. As for the petrol smell, not sure of what that could be from. Possibly happened during shipping. Please reach out to our CS team to see how best we can help.

Most of my menswear has been from Spier and MacKay since 2022

I have purchased several suits, a custom shirt, dress shoes, and a winter coat from Spier and MacKay.

Many people seem to complain about the service, but I have not experienced any problems (although I have also not had reason to contact them with refunds or the like).

It is true that they often take about a weed to ship orders. It is also true that the filters on he website is still a bit wonky. The quality to price ratio, however, is so good, that I can easily overlook this.
The shirt prices are about the same as those you find in average malls, but the quality is much higher. The suits are a bit more expensive than what you normally see in malls, but those mall suits are trash, while S&M suits are quite respectable.

The negative customer service reviews are true

I didn't want to believe all the negative reviews on horrible customer service, but obviously they are all true.

Ordered a coat on saturday that was in stock, was informed the following Friday at 4pm via email that the item is out of stock. They asked if I would like a replacement or a refund. So i emailed back asking if it can be exchanged for a slightly more expensive coat (almost everything else is out of stock), and the auto return email says they will attempt to get back to me in 24-48 business hours (so sometime next week).

Pretty shocking communication / attention to detail. Willing to update review pending further communications.

Update: After a few embarrassingly slow email responses (they will not answer phone calls), I decided for a full refund. I was then told it could take 4 business days to "process my refund". It's 2024, refunds should never take a week, just as it should never take a week to be notified that an item I paid hundreds of dollars for is not in stock. Just a joke of a company

Sorry for your experience. Our order processing time is 3-5 business days as indicated on our site.

Though the item was showing in stock at the time of purchase, The warehouse team would not know if the item is out of stock until they physically go to pull the item. Orders are in cue, and with the small team we have, it can take 3-5 business days to get to your order. Keeping in mind a business day being Monday to Friday, not including holidays. Unfortunately, out of stock notices are fairly common for online stores as a multiple of factors weigh on inventory accuracy. That said, we have an 98% fulfillment rate. Unfortunately this order was in the 2%.

As for almost everything being out of stock, you were ordering during the Black Friday sales period. Naturally a lot of product will be sold out at that time. We don't keep extra inventory on hand just to sell during Black Friday.

Additionally 24-48 hours for email responses is fairly common now, even for larger companies. We're working hard to do better and most emails are replied in under 24 hours.

As for your CC refund, the refund in generally done on our end the same day, but can take up to 4 business days for your bank to process and post back on your card.

Dress like an Investment Banker with a teller salary

I have bought around 15-20 pieces , some online and some in the mississagua store, mostly happy with them.

pros:
Returns were straightforward
ive gotten some pieces on sale that
were just ridiculous value.
I built my office wardrobe from scratch with them, they have all the basics,
Also have gotten jeans, shorts and polo shirts for more a casual dad-look
In-store staff is great

Cons:
It takes a bit to understand their sizing, with some trial and error.
They don’t have stuff for all body types. My dad is really short and has broad shoulders, had to go custom. One pair of linen shorts teared apart fast, after wearing them a few
times. not sure if I can return them.

Beautiful company!

The suits selection is simply phenomenal! I think they have the best quality fabrics from famous mills around the world for affordable prices and I would admit that their shirts are not on the same level of quality as other makers in the same budget. However, they definitely beat that with the level of selection they have!

I think what really surprised me, is that me and a friend of mine went to Savile row about a week ago and were complemented by a bespoke tailor for a combination made by Spier & Mackay. I think the store name was Richard Anderson if I remember correctly. And later that day we were offered a job for looking so dapper!

I wrote this review mainly because I saw negative reviews for this company that I have grown to love quite a lot, do bear in mind I never visited their store, I mainly order online as I live in the UK. For if I ever wanted anything close to that level of quality I would need to pay a lot more for probably less.

So best of luck to Spier and Mackay and thank you guys so much!

EXTREMELY UNRESPONSIVE

I came in to their shop on March 20th to have my measurements taken for two custom shirts and it’s been over four weeks with ZERO update.

There hasn’t been any confirmation that my order is being worked nor any type of ETA.

Emailed a “Deanna” twice with ZERO response. Called their so called “customer service” number multiple times and NO ONE picks it up and go straight to a voicemail that advises to email the same address that this Deanna should be replying to.

Finally managed to get a hold of someone who told me they’d email someone on my behalf and that’s been over a week.

I’ve always been apprehensive at going to this place but I gave them the benefit of the doubt that they’d look after their clients especially first-time buyers and yet I’m greeted with an extremely lousy service.

EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING. I should’ve gone else where.

Checking our email and phone records, we've been nothing but responsive and have been responding to you within our outlined time frame.

First, it should be noted and corrected, you came into the shop March 31st, not the 20th as confirmed by you via email as well as the order form submitted by the store.

Not sure what communication you are looking for. You came in and got re-measured for an order you placed online. You would be notified once the shirt is ready. As with custom the process is 4-6 weeks. It's been 3 weeks.

"Deanna" who is a real person by the way, not sure why the quotes, replied to your emails within the standard 48 business hour time frame. To say you emailed with no response is simply not true and we have the email records to back this up.

You emailed on Friday, April 14th for an update - again, we have an email response time of 24 - 48 business hours (as outlined by the auto-response when you send an email). So, no one was available on the weekend to respond. You impatiently emailed again Monday to the same thread, bumping the thread to the bottom, resetting the 24-48 response timeline. Wednesday we responded with the update.

When you called, there is the opportunity to leave a message. Messages are checked regularly. The lines are busy and calls cannot always be answered. If a message is left with a call-back number, we always call back.

It's clear you're not satisfied and decided to exaggerate and spread untruths. We've gone ahead and cancelled your order and you will be refunded in full.

We've been in business for nearly 13 years and have served thousands of customers all over the world with a very high repeat and satisfaction rate.

I don’t understand how a business can stay open with the crappy customer service these people give. I placed an order 8 days ago and to this day, I have not received an order confirmation, tracking … anything to even acknowledge my order EXCEPT that they definitely took the money from my account without any issues or any hesitation. I have emailed a total of 5 times I the span of two days and have received zero communication. These people and this company are disgusting and should be shut down.

HAHAHA AT YOUR RESPONSE. how about you communicate with people who give you money? You have time to answer this but not the multiple emails and calls? Seems very fitting.

Still stands - you suck at this. Do better.

Your order was shipped but we've recalled and cancelled it. Your order is being refunded.

You would have received the tracking number already, check the spam/junk folder of your email box. When you placed the order, you would have definitely received a confirmation email which clearly states that processing time is 3-5 business days. With Easter being last weekend, that cut into the processing time. From our side, your order was shipped in the specified time. As for email response time, again our response time is 24-48 business hours, which is normal for a business our size. Emailing more times on the same thread during a 48 hour period isn't going to get you a response faster as they are replied to in chronological order and your impatience kept kicking your thread to the back of the line. The response will not be instant. We're a small company with a small staff. Not an excuse, we do our best to move as quickly as possible. We've been in business for over 12 years. We're not here to steal anyone's money. To say we're "disgusting and should be shut down" is frankly ridiculous.

Ordered a Harrington Jacket from them and it took them a week to ship it out. When I decided I want to return it for it’s terrible quality, I emailed them and haven’t heard anything back, leaving me stuck with this jacket with no way to return it.

Good products but horrible costumer service

I emailed Spier & Mackay(returns) on the 28/12/2022 requesting an exchange. They responded on 30/12/2022 questioning me which sizes that I wanted to exchange to. On 04/01/2023 I answered them and since that day I have had no answer from them. I emailed them again on 11/01/2023 reaffirming my request and complaining about the delay, unfortunately, I continued without a single response. Because I didn't obtain an answer I did some search on google and found a description of a client that had a similar issue and then contacted Spier Mackay through Instagram and they promptly solved his problem. So I did the same, contacted Spier Instagram and informed them about my problem on 20/01/2023 they wrote "I’ll bump the returns department asap" and still haven't heard from them. Sadly I have no choice but to file a complaint with the Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery. I didn't expect such poor customer service from a company with the quality products as Spier.
