Their "touchless service" means they don't have service. They have a phone number and videos. If you want to figure out how to use their RV unit, it's going to be up to you to take your time to watch videos. They have NO ONE you can see face to face. Our RV unit worked fine right up until the transmission went out. They couldn't locate a service vendor to get to the unit for 7 hours. Spaceship couldn't tell us when they would get there. They couldn't tell us where we would end up nor could they tell us when.

The Spaceships team is run by real people who really care about making your experience the very best it can be.
Just to set the record straight, we have a "contactless pick-up". We send you 2 pre-collection emails, one confirming pick up time, how the pick up works and branch address and directions, and the second called "Getting to know your motorhome". This contains a full 16 minute walk through familiarisation video showing how all the features in the motorhome work. We suggest keeping this on your phone so you can run through it in the motorhome on your first night. We also provide a link to our YouTube channel which has a series of shorter on road support videos like "Operating your heating control panel" and How to operate your fridge" etc, just in case you need additional information. Our team are at the branch if you need any other information.
When you arrive to pick up the vehicle, your online check in has been completed in advance, you use a key code to collect your keys and your motorhome is waiting for you. Most customers love this system: no forms to fill in, no further check in required, no hanging around. Just into your motorhome and hit the road.
Secondly, the transmission did not go "out". The vehicle probably went into Limp Mode as a result of excessive idling or shorter low speed trips, or possibly because you pressed both pedals simultaneously. You used our 24/7 free roadside support service. As we explained in several emails, this is operated by RAC, the UK's leading roadside assistance provider, who are totally separate to Spaceships Rentals. We have no control over their response times, which they prioritise based on circumstances like location and whether there are children present. You were in a safe place, no children or medical needs, with a bed, toilet, kitchen, central heating and shower. You may have been a slightly lower priority for them on that basis.
However, you decided not to wait for them and abandoned the vehicle on the side of the road. This resulted in them being unable to locate either you or the vehicle, and consequently the vehicle had to be recovered back to our branch. Both the RAC and our own technicians found there to be no fault with the vehicle. They could have easily cleared the Limp Mode issue and you would have been back on the road within minutes had you just waited.
So to sum up, we tried to look after you and support at every stage of your trip, but you ignored our processes and systems. We are a professional outfit and we treat our customers with a hell of a lot more respect than you treated our motorhome, staff and support teams.
Thank you for allowing us the opportunity of setting the record straight and we hope you enjoyed your 9 day/1200 mile trip in your Spaceships motorhome.

My trip to the highlands
My trip went very well, I had no problems with the vehicle. I really liked the fact that we could pick up the van independently. The van was well organised and had everything I needed. I picked up and returned the vehicle in Edinburgh, which is very accessible from the city centre; you just need to take a bus. I think the vehicle I had was a bit old because the gears sometimes shifted poorly, but otherwise I had no problems and didn't need to call for assistance. I found some trash left in the car when I picked it up and I think it would be nice to have some dish soap included but otherwise everything was really nice!

Highly recommend, great value van.
What a wonderful trip we had travelling in the UK in our trusty VW Caddy! Very economical and good value car, had all we needed for an enjoyable camping trip. Just don't try picking up before allocated time as this caused a bit of an issue getting the self collect keys but other than that, no issues what so ever.
Mike and the team were great with communication. Highly recommend, in fact looking at hiring again for an upcoming Europe trip.

Just to set the record straight, the air con was working on pick up and we tried numerous ways to help you to operate it. We suggested that you may have inadvertantly dislodged the cables in the passenger footwell with your feet. We asked if it worked on the max setting, which is also an indicator of a loose cable connection. Unfortunately you did not reply to those questions, nor confirm whether or not the air con was working. It was working when we checked the vehicle back in.
The tyre was also fine on pick up, as was evidenced by the time stamped photos we email to you on collection. It may be that you accidentally scraped a kerb, scrubbing the tyre, but your puncture may simply have been a random puncture. These things can happen in any vehicle at any time. Keep in mind, that despite you having an insurance excess on your booking with us, we did not charge you for a replacement tyre.
The fuses were not burned in the battery and perhaps any fridge leak was caused by a spill or leak from a liquid in the fridge in a moving motorhome. It wasn't leaking on your return and the same motorhome is now back on hire - with no issues on air con, battery or fridge/freezer.
The motorhome is an 18 plate, but is neither dirty or unsafe. As for customer service, as previously stated we did try to help you resolve your various issues by phone and over the 15 emails of yours that we replied to. We resolved the operational problem you had with the electric hook up, the fridge and possibly the air con, although you didn't confirm that. We explained that we operate a "level to level" fuel policy and you return at the same level as pick up when you complained that the tank wasn't full, even though that was already outlined in our pre-collection email. We allowed you to buy a replacement mirror that you broke off (rather than take the replacement cost from your insurance excess) and did not charge for the replacement tyre after your puncture. Given all that, it's hard to see how our customer service can be so bad.
We do between 1200-1300 hires per year, with the majority of our reviews being positive. We are grateful for all reasonable feedback and we use that to learn and improve our operational standards and customer service.
Unfortunately there are occasions where things don't go to plan, like a puncture happening, or the fridge power source not being set correctly to initially cool the fridge, or the air con cables being accidentally loosened or on the odd occasion, a mechanical breakdown that is beyond our control. Invariably, it is these kind of instances that despite our best efforts to help and resolve them, lead to the handful of negative reviews that we occasionally receive.

Best way to explore Scotland
Best way to explore Scotland. We adored our VW Caddy.
We hired the Caddy in Edinburgh for 5 weeks, and en route, asked to extend it for a further week as we were enjoying camping in it so much. We chose to supply our own bedding and bought a cheap table and chairs as well, so we pretty much hired the vehicle 'as is'. We found the bed super comfortable and everything you could think of was provided. The fuel efficiency was superb, and when we had questions they were answered quickly by Spaceships. I was a little wary when we booked that so much had to be paid up front, but all went well and the check in worked fine. We met 4 other Spaceships in camping grounds in our 6 week Scottish adventure and I asked them all how they found their Caddy's and everyone said they loved them. So great to have something that is easy to park and easy to drive on those narrow scottish single lane roads.

Great car for Scotland trip
My sister and I (59 & 65) wanted to see Scotland. We had the Buzz Aldrin spaceshuttle camper for one week and this was the best choice for our trip. The car was nice to handle, powerful engine and easy to maneuver on the small roads. Enough space for sleeping and relaxing in the evening. The location (Edinburgh) was hard to reach by bus. With our first check in E-Mail we mentioned our experience and got an appology. Very good customer service and quick responses. We asked for additional chairs, table and bedding and all was provided as ordered. The only problem we had was the kettle that leaked so we replaced it and the curtains are a bit old.
I would use them again as I find the car was well maintained so reassuring it will work and customer service is excellent.

We appreciate that the bus service from Edinburgh City Centre is a little slow, and your feedback helps us to keep on top of the changing bus routes. The branch is located just 5 miles from Edinburgh airport, so easier to reach if you are arriving by plane.

The car was clean and ok
The car was clean and the components that we had ordered were present. One window couldn`t be closed correktly but after treatment with grease, ist worked. Navigation systems quite old and less useful. Everything else worked alright. Friendliness and helpfulness at Spaceships Broxburn was great. All in all we would choose Spaceships again.

Avoid Spaceships Rentals UK – completely unprofessional, unsafe, and unethical.
What was meant to be a peaceful family holiday turned into a stress-filled nightmare, thanks to this company’s poor service and negligence.
I rented a motorhome with a full package, including gas and a promise of reliable condition. On day two, while in Scotland, the engine warning came on. RAC advised not to drive it and warned they wouldn’t help again if it failed — we were stuck, with two children and no support.
Spaceships took two days to offer a replacement, but told me I’d have to travel 4+ hours one way to get it. With no transport help offered, we were stranded.
A local helper found the engine oil was dangerously low — I had to buy and top it up myself. The vehicle should never have been on the road.
The heating failed at night, and I was told the gas was out — after just 2 days of usage on what should’ve been a full 10kg cylinder. I had to drive 2 hours to refill gas. I suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, and that freezing night affected my health badly.
Ryan, from Spaceships, promised over the phone to refund 50% of the rental plus the £40 gas cost as a goodwill gesture. He acknowledged my decision to drive the faulty vehicle back to London (instead of wasting more time and travel going to Edinburgh for a swap) as a favour to the company, showing good faith despite my fear the vehicle might break down again.
But after the return, Ryan denied everything he said. No refund. No reimbursement. No ethics.
They keep excusing themselves saying “we’re a small company” – being small is not an excuse for lying to customers, renting out poorly maintained vehicles, or avoiding accountability.
The motorhome itself was in junk-yard condition — far from the quality they market.
Their customer service is dismissive, dishonest, and careless. If you value your time, health, and safety, stay far away from Spaceships Rentals UK.
I’ve already filed a complaint with BVRLA and urge others to do the same if they’ve been mistreated.

We understand that you have based your review on a request for a refund which was deemed to be unreasonable. Following a dashboard warning light appearing, which as we explained may have been caused by the vehicle idling, we contacted you by phone and email and offered you various options to enable you to continue your trip. You told us you needed some time to consider them, but then just continued with your trip driving over 180 miles over the next couple of days before getting back in touch.
Eventhough your rental was from London to London branch, we also offered you the option of returning to our Edinburgh branch to end your trip with a refund. You chose not to do this, and without contacting us continued on your trip driving the same motorhome back from Scotland to London. In total you travelled over 1440 miles in 7 days in the same vehicle. The fact that you completed your hire, in the same vehicle without any further mechanical problems of your own volition obviously means no refund was required.
The LPG gas tank will run down with use over time and you were travelling in April, probably using the heating, hot water, fridge and oven. We supply two links in our pre-collection email to show where to find LPG stations and plan them into your itinerary, so we're unsure as to why it was necessary to drive for 2 hours to find a convenient filling station.
We are also aware that you made a complaint to the British Vehicle Rental & Leasing Association (BVRLA) who run an independent Trading Standards approved Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) service. They also rejected your complaint and request for refund.
We believe your review is a little unfair as we gave you various options of support to help you which you rejected without getting back in touch. You also completed your 7 day hire in the original vehicle returning to London.

We rent a « luxury » campervan for a 1 week roadtrip through Scotland. If the contactless system is very usefull, the scary quality of our campervan was unexpected! Reparation made by tape on shocks, mirors, … never seen that before!

We're glad that the contactless pick up and drop off worked well and efficiently for you. We apologise if there were some minor temporary repairs to your motorhome. Unfortunately, the wing mirrors sometimes get damaged on the previous hire and there isn't time to replace them before the next hire. On those occasions, we sometimes tape up the mirror to strengthen the damaged area, ensuring it functions normally. We hope this didn't cause any inconvenience or affect your enjoyment of your road trip. We also hope that your motorhome gave you the opportunity of enjoying an unforgettable trip around Scotland.

If you are thinking of renting from Spaceships, read this.
Having read replies to other negative comments, we are sure that a defensive reply from Spaceship Rentals will be the response to this review. The first problem was that there was only an arrangement to pick up the keys for the Motorhome from a key safe. There was no handover or orientation to the features or how things work. Mike at Spaceship Rentals confirmed this is their business model, even though staff members are clearly close by. Video links are emailed prior to collection but are really not sufficient. Other Motorhomers where we stayed could not believe it was a key safe pick up with no tour of the vehicle. As first timers in a Motorhome, which Spaceship Rentals knew when we booked, I would say this is an unsafe and wholly unsatisfactory way to do business.
We initially refused to take our Motorhome, because it was simply filthy. We asked for a refund of the voucher our son had purchased for our anniversary but they claimed they did not refund vouchers. Legally I am not sure this would be accepted, but it does give you a good example of their attitude to customer service. The Motorhome was very well worn, which was fine as we didn't expect a brand new one, however the mattress was stained, as was the duvet, the sink was dirty with gunk around the bottom of the tap, the cooker, cooker lid and up the side of the cooker were splashed with fat and dirt. The cooker rings were black with cooked-on food and fat. The corners on the floor were heaped with dirt. Really only photos could do our words justice, we have them by the way. On top of the filth, the grey water poured out of the bottom of the vehicle, but we could not shut the valve and neither could two other people on the site.
Having been repeatedly unable to get through on the post-sales phone number provided when we collected the vehicle, we called on the sales number. Not surprisingly it was answered for a potential sale but not a potential problem. Throughout the booking and money collection period, they were very responsive and helpful, but we definitely had the feeling they had encountered this situation before. After being told repeatedly that they do not refund vouchers, they asked for the opportunity to have the Motorhome cleaned. We reluctantly agreed to this only because we didn't want our son to feel bad. The sales guy contacted the nearby office and sent a couple of staff members to us, who told us that we should “remember that this was caravaning”, as if that excused such a disgusting state of cleanliness; it could only have had a cursory wipe over for goodness knows how long. We felt we had no option but to give them the opportunity to clean the vehicle. In the end, after it was returned to us in a better state, we agreed to take the Motorhome, not because we were happy with the state of it or because we felt there was any kind of resolution, but because we did not want our son to feel bad about having chosen a company like Spaceship Rentals for the gift. Spaceship Rentals’ sales pitch of calling this a “luxury” Motorhome could not be further from the truth and their customer service exists only when they're taking your money. If you're thinking of renting a Motorhome from Spaceship Rentals, think very carefully. Apart from Mike who answers these complaints, we have not named the individuals we dealt with on the basis they may have just been following their employers instructions.

We apologise that you did not enjoy your experience and that your motorhome wasn't up to our normal high standards of presentation on collection. Your feedback will help us to ensure that this doesn't happen in future.
With regard to our contactless pick up, most customers love it. At Spaceships, you enjoy a full first day's rental with flexible pick ups from 10am (or earlier on request). The majority of customers choose a 10-11am pick up, so with 50 campervans and motorhomes for hire at each branch, it is not possible to do a handover in person. Perhaps it is something we offer as an extra at selected times and will take your comments on board.
Our online check-in enables all admin to be carried out prior to pick up and as you know, we email a 16 minute motorhome familiarisation video showing how to operate all the features. This means a fast collection service, getting your key from a key safe with your vehicle waiting for you. No forms, no fuss, no hanging around, less time at the branch and more time in the motorhome. This works well for customers and has proved to be efficient, popular and successful.
As we also explain, there are team members at the branch to help you. In addition to some additional cleaning we carried out, our colleagues also set up the heating control panel for you, in case you hadn't seen the familiarisation video.
Part of the Terms and Conditions on vouchers is no cash alternatives. This is because the vouchers are bought as a gift for somebody else, so we may not be refunding the original purchaser, as was the case here.
In addition to the phone and customer support provided at pick-up, we also called and emailed throughout your 3 day trip. I called and emailed you personally on the Saturday morning with support on the heating system and frost valve, and also refunded the mains hook up you ordered in error as we provide a camp site hook up as standard, eventhough our offices are closed.
The branding of the motorhome is based on specification. Our Luxury motorhome has a fixed island double bed in a rear en-suite bedroom with separate toilet and shower room. A second double lowers from the roof. It can be powered from electric hook up supply, leisure battery or LPG. It has hot water with central and underfloor heating and a fully fitted kitchen with oven, grill, 3 ring hob and a large 142 litre fridge/freezer. Everything you need to live in comfort on the road - including the kitchen sink! It is a high spec model and we use the "Luxury" branding to distinguish it from our Compact Motorhome, which has slightly less features.
As explained during our phone call and subsequent email on Saturday, the water dump from the motorhome was probably the frost valve being automatically activated by low temperatures. Your trip was the last weekend in February, so as the temperature drops, the frost valve kicks in and dumps the water in the system to prevent the pipes from freezing. We emailed a video showing how the frost valve can simply be reset following this.
With regard to incoming calls, all calls, sales, roadside support or customer service come through the same switchboard, and are answered by our own dedicated in-house customer support team during office hours. Out of office hours we also have a third party roadside support partner to assist our customers, thus providing somebody at the end of the phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Again, we apologise that on this occasion the motorhome was not in the condition it should have been on pick up. This is an isolated occurrence and your feedback will help us to ensure we continue to improve our standards. We are also grateful that you gave us the opportunity to put that right and help you with the heating control panel. We also hope that you had a lovely long weekend break in the New Forest in your motorhome.
