Barely anything good about this software.
At least it doesn't block YouTube or Scratch. Other than that, GoGuardian 2: Electric Boogaloo. It blocks 90% of fully safe-for-kids images but not two women twerking in the camera, then you get expelled for seeing the girls twerking on a completely unrelated search. Complete breach of privacy. Trust used to be the default, now we're tracking, analyzing, and storing bathroom breaks with E-Hall Pass and stalking students because "we can't trust gen alpha". You said the same about Gen Z, and what happened? Nobody dropped a recreation of the bomb we dropped on Osaka in WWII just because a student was actually given something revolutionary: trust.
Its like big brother watching you in a horrible way
the good thing is its not blocked on this Chromebook because I can't access YouTube but I can access an recreation of 9/11 making fun like that's messed up are we devolving as a society even if I'm at home its mourning what I'm doing. Btw I plead the 4th amendment
Worst thing ever
HORRIBLE. Wanna go to a game website? Nope. Want to search up the word Unblocked? Cant. It blocks EVERYTHING. When you are in school sure, I have no beef, as kids like myself should be focusing on school, but Two reasons, one it is INCREDIBLY easy to work around it, Only If you have the right tools, and yet half of those will also be blocked, its a complete wast of money if you are a teacher and that is a fact. Kids can find ways in Literally EVERY way possible, so the school district is paying $55,000 per year, just to have it not work. The other issue is that it is incredibly annoying. Your at home after a long day of school, you go on your computer to play a game only to find that is blocked. After school, you should have free time to play games, and watch movies without having to go down a rabbit hole just to find a website that could get you arrested. I work around this filter agent all the time in school, so it never applies to me, but for others it is a wast. of anything that you can imagine
Glorified Spyware
I'll admit it, something's happening.
So I've heard, the teachers are experiencing troubles finding good educational videos because my school updated their YouTube rules.
And that's 100% my school's fault. Not ours. Not even a 0.1%.
My school is starting to mimic the Roblox "bad updates" situation. THATS A PROBLEM.
Complete Garbage
Yeah... Fuck lightspeed. It does nothing except invade the privacy of students. I'm unsure about the ethics of the company; idk if they're selling our data or not. It gives teachers the ability to look at your screen and see all of your tabs. Not only that but they can see how many tabs AND windows you have open. Teachers will be able to close and block tabs for students. Lightspeed is a disgrace and should NOT be installed AUTOMATICALLY on our computers.
Light speed is insanely slow
Light speed is insanely slow. If you open a new tab it takes multiple seconds. A new tab should be instant. When I go to Google images, it can take minutes just for a single image to load. When I open YouTube, my AP Physics video was blocked. On Wikipedia, every single image is blocked. It also takes tons of data from you, and does not recognize do not track requests. It even blocked the training site for the automotive services course that I am taking at my school. I cannot believe that a company like this would still be in business.
no good things about this
Ive seen that this extension itself uses ai, as if ai isn't already a big problem, but the concept of this seems invasive but not surprising for a district, but also blocks away just a slither of freedom, were in middle/high school I think we should be able to play games on your computer AFTER school hours since many people cant afford a personal computer. Now I get that districts use this to block inappropriate things but lets be honest, admins usually would block the site before hand
and if it isn't enough, it invades A BUNCH of our privacy, were in our teens and we want to explore sites in our free time and there should be nothing wrong with that, but its annoying even more since it block YOUTUBE AND GOOGLE SLIDES STICKERS?? the YouTube example is poor since district usually blocks all inappropriate videos and some kids just wanna watch some videos while writing, eating etc. And for the Google stickers and pictures don't get me started, it blocks creativity and is the reason why most students are so basic and don't try when adding details to their project
I hate this extension I would rather have go guardian, blocks many basic things which is why we don't let ai take control of things.
it sucks...
not only are they blocking entire google searches, but its just insanely invasive and restrictive in general.
i cant even ask a question without the ENTIRE google search getting tagged for answers from reddit, instagram, facebook, whatever. im not purposely looking for responses from those sites, so to block the entire page and prevent me from searching more without having to close the whole tab out is very, very annoying in itself. what if i need to look up a question for project research and i cant get a single thing written down because of the stupid ai filter? it blocks school sites and needed images too, which is even more irritating because why are we blocking a stock image of the color orange.
then, like multiple reports have said, it has access to EVERYTHING. ip address, current searches and open tabs, entire screen, literally everything. i dont like being spied on 24/7, its so weird. plus, if they have my actual screen access FROM AFAR, who's to say they don't know my personal emails and passwords that i need to use for some sites?
the worst blocking software ever
Okay so my school hasn't even started yet but here I am furious.
So I am going into middle school next week and I had just got my school issued Chromebook. There is a game I've been dying to play on a computer all summer (as I don't have my own personal computer) and I thought I would be able to play it. But no. This year is different, this year the school thought it would be funny to shove this god awful software down our throats.
Now. To make things clear the website said game is on was blocked last year. BUT at 4 pm every day, all the sites were unblocked and you could do whatever you wanted on your computer (school ended at 3:30 btw). But this year it was blocked all day. I tested this by attempting to go on the website at 8 AT NIGHT and everything was still blocked.
I understand blocking sites that weren't blocked last year such as itch.io or all the knock off fortnight games, cuz those can have very inappropriate and violent content. but you really had to block not only geometry dash, but coolmathgames? it literally has math in the name, it is a global in class gaming website made for kids. like what are we doing people? or should I say ai, because that is all this freeking thing is.
And that brings me too my next point. the faulty ai. I hate a lot of forms ai nowadays, especially in art or in places where peoples jobs are getting replaced, but I have never felt this kind of burning hatred towards it before. See, I was already pissed that it blocked a bunch of pictures of a wholesome character from a very adult game that a play, but I wasn't particularly angry because, well its a very adult game. then I looked up a picture of a character from a show rated TVY7 and all the pictures were still blocked. this went on until I literally looked up cute and wholesome meme and literally every picture was blocked. Now, none of this may sound important, like its just shows and games and random ass shit you don't need for school. but it also blocked more than half of the pictures of several roman gods I looked up. Damn it they even blocked pictures explaining the definition of something.
Before I finish this lengthy review, I would like to inform you what I am going to do to fix this issue and what you should do, because I believe that if enough people get rid of this monetization and voice their concerns, there might be a chance that it will be gone forever.
I am going to have any and all classmates and teachers who hate this software as much as I do sign a petition that removes the extension from the district. Then, I will write an essay to send to the principal or a teacher who can forward it to the head of education for my school district. And if nothing happens within a few weeks or they replay with no. I will find a way to speak face to face with whatever nucklehead put this stupid software into play.
In conclusion. This site sucks and no one should ever use it and it should die and throw up and be killed by a swat team and be eaten alive and- continues rambling.
- A very concerned and angry student
They would not even answer the phone or…
They would not even answer the phone or have a recruiter call me back. I was really interested in a position and I kept trying to reach out and they denied my application when I have a lot of experience regarding the content reviewer role. Did not even give me a chance. Pretty low of a company to do that and I passed the assessments.
made things worse
remove my educational websites and disallow me from learning
So i'll be honest it's ahh
So i'll be honest it's ahh, but it has a few highs going for it A FEW as in like 3 or 4, but some things it blocks like geoguessr THAT GAME WAS BLOCKED BECAUSE IT WAS AN IN QUOTE "educational games" like are we so for real right now, you made your app/site for schools where education happens, and you blocked an educational game, YOU CAN FLIPPING LEARN YOU STATES AND PLACES IN THE WORLD WITH IT, and you remove the entirety YouTube shorts when I found more educational stuff in then I do in a wiki meant for that. what are we doing people are we slow, are we spedcial, we need to learn how to actually learn, lightspeed isn't helping do that, (teacher) "well it is very usefu-" like shut up this ain't useful or needed at all... that is my opinion on why lightspeed is ahh. And with that folks the show is over goodbyeeeee.
this has gotten worse
Bro what has lightspeed done now, every time i search smth it will give me the google search and be fine but then mili-seconds later it will give me a random blocked site error for no reason when i didnt click on a link, and now i type smth in and it automatically enters it and the main/first page that pops up when you search smth it doesnt even work, at this point is there even a single thing that isn’t blocked, like my school computer is completely useless other than a few things like google slides, doc, video, and some other things like that at this point what can we even use our school computers for, their useless… like im just trying to find reference art of calne ca for smth im trying to do and not a single thing is showing up and its all the same stupid image like at this point i need to grab all the files from this computer go to a state and school that doesnt use lightspeed and then be fine which would never happen for many reasons like brooooo teachers do smth abt this pleasssseeee!!!!!!
lightspeed is dum dum dum poo poo head
One time I searched up "Nebulae" and all of the images were blocked. Seriously, what's so bad about nebulae? This proves that whatever AI that's behind these blocks is unreliable. Also, on its official Chrome Web Store page, it says it has your SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER. They also take your exact coordinates, like why does my school need to know where I went on vacation this summer.
On its official website, Lightspeed Filter admits that the biggest problem is itself. It says that “Proxy bypass now generates 7x more blocked activity than malware across K–12 networks”, which shows that most of its resources for filtering are spent on trying to solve the problem that they themselves created, rather than blocking harmful things such as malware. It’s like an autoimmune disease. Lightspeed then explains how it chooses which sites to block, which isn’t reliable, falsely identifies proxies, and sometimes does so by reading private data. It “Inspects rendered page content and embedded elements (canvas, iframes, third-party assets) to detect bypass activity inside trusted Google domains”. This means that Lightspeed Filter is invading user privacy and going against Google’s promises that “The content you save on Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Vids is private to you, from others, unless you choose to share it.”
It's so bad that we have a group of over 50 people drawing Lightspeed propaganda art and some writing diss tracks. My teacher spent around 15 minutes trying to get ONE YouTube video to work that was strictly educational. And there are over 10 different documents with the same common goal: remove Lightspeed from school computers. The admins lose money, the teachers can't use the same resources they have used for years, and the students are being spied on and denied access of their essential learning materials.
Furthermore, Lightspeed is just as, if not more prone to a data breach, like Canvas did. If Lightspeed gets hacked, lots of people's personal information, social security numbers, IP addresses, etc. could get leaked and that would be... very BAD.
In conclusion, Lightspeed is the bane of my existence, it's causing depression in students, my cat has fleas because of it, it should be sued like IXL did, it should get killed by rising lava, it should get its mace stolen by an invis guy, it should be banished to another dimension, it is more trash than all the trash in the universe, it should get banished to the shadow realm, it should go to sakupen hell, it should get its nether portal broken by a ghast, its worse than the gameplay of map pack levels, brian thomas is unc, it should misplace its obsidian, it should get a lagspike at 99%, it's so dumb it would install virus.exe, it spawns blocked images as fast as a silverfish spawner spawns silverfish, it wet the bed at age 27, lightspeed more like slothspeed, lightspeed more like lights-peed, it is a dystopian government, it admin abused more times than the amount of stars in the multiverse, it's more strict about what sites students visit than nintendo with modding, it ate a rock-hard burnt steak and still managed to get salmonella, and
most of all...
lightspeed is a poo poo poo poo poo poo poo poo poo poo poo poo poo sahur 💀
*contents above written by members of my friend's Anti-Lightspeed group
💀
BAD JUST BAD DO NOT GET
OVERBLOCKS SO MANY THINGS IT IS SO HECKED UP OMG I HATE IT SO MUCH I HAD AN ELA TEST AND IT BLOCKED THE VIDEO WE NEEDED TO WATCH AND IT BLOCKS PICTURES OF FRICKING STICK FIGURES AND EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE WORLD EVEN THE THINGS WE NEED FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS BROO CISCO UMBRELLA IS WAYYYY BETTER I CANNOT BELIEVE WCPSS SPENT A FRICKING 350K ON THIS BROOOO ALSO IT HAS FRICKING ACCESS TO YOUR IP ADRESS AND MOTION SENSOR SOMEONE PLS TELL ME WHY IT NEEDS UR MOTION SENSOR
This is a violation on students privacy…
This is a violation on students privacy even when students are home they are still being watched they block music being played what content you are able to consume even if its kid friendly
Lightspeed is heavily restrictive and easily bypassable
Lightspeed blocks almost every single website which makes it harder to find decently enjoyable things to do once I'm done with my work.
One example of a blocked website is "gdbrowser", which is a website that allows you to browse Geometry Dash but not actually play any levels. You can't play any levels, so there's no reason to block it. I tend to use gdbrowser to test Lightspeed bypasses since it loads a handful of resources and there's a lot of page switching involved.
Lightspeed's website claims that it "puts an end to bypass prevention," but I've spent a few days decompiling its code and they do the absolute bare minimum for bypass prevention (check if the URL contains data: and one or more of the following: extprint3r or Blobby-Boi, as well as removing any bookmarks/tabs that point to javascript: or specific Lightspeed extension URLs). These bypass prevention checks can simply be circumvented by adding, modifying, or deleting an extra line or two of code from your bypass website. Also, the filter is heavily prone to slowdowns and hangs, since its worker code has to manually do the filtering itself (via the webRequest API).
It only seems that Lightspeed is really secure because ChromeOS carries the security for Lightspeed.
Despite ChromeOS's somewhat decent security, I've already found 2 methods to disable Lightspeed: one that fully hard-disables Classroom and Alert, and one that fully disables the filter. I also plan on reviving LightSPED Killer Agent for more newer ChromeOS devices.
The fact that I even have to spend days investigating a way to bypass the filter just to access basic websites should tell you something about Lightspeed (and realistically every other filtering extension).
irony
They literally said on one of their websites (of which is blocked because they do not want people finding workarounds) that malware isn't the issue, its kids bypassing the filter. That's like saying "The virus about to destroy your entire organisation isn't the problem, a bored 14 year old is." Like come on.
light-speed schools love it while students don't
it is borderline malware it doesn't just install on the chromebook for school but all chrome apps if you sign in to the account that has the lightspeed extension it forse installed on your own device like the tracker on it and when I tried force deleting it on my own laptop and it gives the error "not admin" when I am the admin I had to format my whole laptop and it was given web cam access at my own home this is horrible
This is nothing more than spyware…
This is nothing more than spyware whitewashed and renamed under the cover of a filter. Like NO filter needs teachers to CONSTANTLY look at your screen, which is already a breach of privacy. Not to mention, people have seen sites getting blocked for "being a distraction", but that "distraction" is sometimes school appropriate or even contributes to student learning.
