Unethical "Hostage" Tactics and Hidden Fee Escalation – Avoid This HR block Office!
​I have never experienced such unprofessionalism in my 25+ years of filing taxes. This office held my completed tax return until the final days of the deadline without explanation, seemingly to leverage the time pressure to justify higher, unquoted service fees.
​Despite providing my documents early, communication was non-existent until the very end. This isn't just poor customer service; it feels like a predatory "sunk cost" trap designed to force clients into paying inflated rates because it’s too late to go elsewhere. As someone managing a complex retirement and investment year, I expected expertise and transparency—instead, I got a "hostage" situation with my financial data.
​If you value your time, your sanity, and honest pricing, stay far away from this H&R Block office. I will be filing formal complaints with their corporate headquarters and the Better Business Bureau.

Now...they do not respect the appointments, the pre accorded fees, or any of my 7 years as a loyal customer!

We were cheated. Would have been better and cheaper to have just used turbotax.

If you request a refund based on their satisfaction guarantee, I would encourage you to directly file a chargeback with your bank. These are con artist - I have all the evidence from the activation code to the address on the receipt. The agent adamantly refuse to admit that was the correct address and said they cannot verify me and hence cannot issue a refund. And when I threaten with a chargeback, suddenly she can verify it!!!!!

My husband and I have a small business, so our tax return is lengthy and full of information needed to file. We have been filing our taxes with Mrs Meda Pate at HR Block for many years. She has always been so helpful in guiding me on things I should put together to make filing our return go smoothly. Mrs Pate is very patient, always knowledgeable of the new tax laws and changes every year, and is very professional and thorough as she prepares our return.

Forced to pay nearly $100 to file for a mystery form I needed to complete my taxes. They were unable to tell me what the form was.

I wish i could give 0 stars. they whole ass just tried to send my husband and I to prison for fraud because it refused to let me enter both w2s and tried to take just one as both our income, tried to tell me we're entitled to thousands of dollars we definitely are not entitled to, and then tried to force me to check out with fraudulent info. We both combed the site and application, tried to "ask an expert" which is apparently fake, started over multiple times, wasted over an hour of our lives we will never get back, then gave up and got the whole thing done on turbotax in 15 minutes (which is obnoxious bc fvck turbotax too, they're the biggest reason any of us have to do this completely unnecessary garbage in the first place bc they bribe congress to keep the tax system this way so they keep making money). whenever the rest of yall are ready to get gone with the entire non-proletariat my contact info is probably attached to this in some shady way because, and i cannot stress this enough, YOU CANNOT TRUST ANY COMPANY, NGO, INSTITUTION, NOTHING. not even whatever this dumb site claims to be.

I had an in-person appointment at H&R Block where they scanned my documents. The next day, the documents still weren’t in the system, which was odd but minor. During the meeting, the tax agent asked for my account and routing numbers. I provided the account number and asked for paper to write down the routing number. She hesitated until I pulled out my own paper. Later, as we finished, she made a comment about my information to a coworker that I couldn’t fully hear, but it felt unprofessional.
This is why I stopped using H&R Block a few years ago.

FURIOUS!!! I did every part ot my return manually to stay "free" on HR site - all went well til the end- surprise!!!!! In the end it was "rejected" and the ONLY way to fix it, even manually was to "Upgrade to the Premium" service! That $49 service gave me access to a federal form that I completed manually by doing all of the back ground work it took to find the information needed. TOTAL TRAP! NEVER AGAIN!

I chose a tax "pro" and arrived at my time. I was then told that the person has been out for two weeks and was not expected back. I was offered another and chose him. While preparing my taxes he had to ask for help 4 times. When the forms were completed I found a $6000 mistake. When I pointed this out he corrected it and I only owed $45. A few days later I was completing my tax payment and found that they did not give me all the forms I needed and had to return to the office to get them. I filed a complaint by phone with HR Bock but have received no answer or apoligy

I changed to H&R Block this year after becoming annoyed with TurboTax's pricing games. Yes, it includes one free state return, but they conveniently neglect to mention the $20 e-filing fee they want you to cough up. I can e-file my state return online with the department of revenue for no fee. Then, there's the omission of the QBI carryforward forms. After completing everything, the final error check informed me that this form won't be available until H&R Block decides to release an update, and I can't file my return until the update is available. H&R Block won't be selling me tax software ever again. Business practices like these really ^&*$ me off.

I sent H&R Block a letter describing the problem I experienced and requesting a refund. Instead of receiving a check for the amount of my purchase, I received a letter telling me to call a number to discuss the matter. The number I called was answered by a woman who had a baby crying in the background. After providing my name, address and the case number in the letter, I was told that my request would be re-submitted, but I had to provide my date of birth and SS number, neither of which I had ever provided to H&R Block, and neither which I was willing to provide to have my request re-considered. So I told this agent to keep my refund, and that I would write an unfavorable review, and that I would never buy H&R Block software again. She was indifferent to all of this.
After writing the refund request letter, I encountered another problem with the software. The estimated tax payments I had made during 2025 were more than my tax due by $1250. Since I would need to send in an estimated tax payment in April, I selected the option of applying the 2025 over-payment to 2026. The tax software for some reason doubled this $1250 to $2500, added it to the 2025 estimated payments I had entered, and then posted $1250 as a requested refund and $1250 as being applied to 2026. This blatant error could only be corrected by manually over-riding the tax software's calculations, and when I entered the correct numbers, the software informed me that over-riding entries would prevent electronic filing.
In summary, H&R Block software is junk, its 100% customer satisfaction guarantee is fraudulent and its customer service is terrible. I would advice everyone to avoid H&R Block. If a class action lawsuit ensues, I will enthusiastically join in.

We have been using HR Block Deluxe for many years now, but the software this year has been the worst of all. It is filled with issues. Two and a half weeks after speaking with the support personnel, only one issue was fixed during an update. It still insists that my W2 should belong to my husband. His 1099B is listed in my name, whether we import the form or try to manually enter it. When we were told to manually "override" the name in the 1099 form, data verification before email told us that we are not allowed to override names. We then had to manually override all of his stock transactions one at a time and change the name in all the worksheets to match the name in 1099B with all the worksheets... Now we have 78 data verification issues and cannot e-file. It is 2 days before April 15, and we have been working with their personnel for more than 2 weeks to fix the problems. I don't think we will be using it next year!

I used H and R block for years. Every year I would ask the person preparing about tax credit fornpaying child support. As youll see defined below the non custodial Parent paying child support is eligible for a non custodial tax credit. However after asking numerous times over many years. H AND R BLOCK FAILED ME EACH YEAR.
I would ask about this each year, and they would always immediately with convictionsay "No No the child tax credit is for the custodial parent and you must be mistaken" and I would believe them. of course.. and so it took me 19 years of paying child support to get the tax credit on only 1 year. Not using H and R block instead I used some tax prep company out of California. BUT they LISTENED to me and RESAERCHED my inquiry found the proper form and filed my return correctly. Originally they also said that I was mistaken as well. but it is really only a (very simple) Google search to learn the proper term and form. And they got me over a grand in credit, (in my pocket). 19 years i missed out. Frankly H and R block and their 'Guarentee' of the best possible return.. They should be held liable for really hurting the quality of my life and my ability to have better cared for my child. H and R block does not give you knowledgeable accountants to work with. They give you someone who can prepare a simple return and fill in the blanks correctly. Im hurt , genuinely hurt by this company.

DO NOT GO THERE. The person who did my taxes at Coon Rapids, Minnesota office was not an accountant. During the appointment he was goigling stuff from Google or the tax system he was using (except what to enter for passive income and where....) I asked him if I was overseas for a long time, do I need to keep my health insurance and will I be penalized if I don't? He literally googled it and still didn't not give me a clear answer. I caught him entering many numbers that weren't correct and when I asked what was that, he deleted the numbers. I had to tell him to stop entering inaccurate info. When we were don he said I have to pay them $485 for the service. This was outrageous as no one in the area would charge that much for a single person with no business filing. Last year I paid $220. I asked him why this number? He said H&R Block charge by document/paper. I said okay how much is it per document? He said he is not sure. Wow. Anyway I came home and looked into my taxes and found so many discrepancies and so many things missing that he was supposed to enter it.
Oh and I asked him if he filed my property tax. He looked panicking and said oh yeah actually you don't qualify because you made too much money. Last year I did $45k more and my other tax office filed property tax and I got money back.
I called the office and asked them to not send my taxes to IRS but they said it was already sent. It went downhill from there. Customer service is as bad as the student who did my taxes. No one knows what's happening and how to fix it and everytime they promise to bring it up to a manager and solve this issue but so far nothing. We are 3 days away from the deadline and I feel they created a problem for me with the IRS that I have to face by myself. You think you're paying an expert to do your taxes, you find out that they hired a failed law school student with no knowledge of taxes to do it cheaply while they charge you a lot of money they don't deserve.

Received a coupon in the mail thanking me for being a returning customer, made the appointment within the timeframe, had to go back, would not honor coupon because it had expired two days prior. Thanks for the thank you and returning, and now I will not return.

NO CUSTOMER SERVICE ANYWHERE, EVEN THOUGH THEY SAY THEY HAVE EXTENDED TIMES FOR TAX SEASON. COMPUTER KEEPS SAYING THEIR OFFICE IS CLOSED. PRICE WAS ORIGINALLY $60 THEN SUDDENLY JUMPED TO $175 AT CHECKOUT. NO EXPLANATION OR ACCOUNTABILITY. I AM NOT USING THESE PEOPLE ANYMORE.

I have been going to H&R Block for a while at least ten years or more. The customer service is ok. I find some of the prepares to be indifferent but are decent enough for the job at hand. My big complaint about Block is their pricing. I had my taxes done, an ACA document and a rent document and i was charged $470.00 for 45 minutes work by the tax preparer. I definitely felt like i was being gouged. I believe H&R Block is like a lot of other tax places they charge the way they do because they know they have the customer over the barrel. Years ago, when i would have my taxes prepared by them, they would charge around $140.00 but they tack on $100.00 dollars or so for every document they have to prepare besides one's W4 form. I am definitely not a happy camper because not only am i paying them a lot of money for preparation but then i have to pay the Feds and State whatever i owe them-which can amount to a hefty sum.
